Adobe Reader X (10.1.2) and Adobe Acrobat 7.1 Standard Issue

I am running Windows 7 Professional 32 bit and IE9.
I have had Adobe Acrobat 7.1 Standard installed on my PC for a while without any problems.
Today, while trying to open some forms on a government website, I received the following message:
I clicked OK to install Adobe Reader X (10.1.2) and restarted my PC to complete the installation.
Once I logged back into my PC, every single icon on my taskbar, start menu, all programs, etc. had been changed to the Adobe Reader X (10.1.2) icon below, and when I clicked on any of them, I received a message that Adobe did not support that file/application.
The only way I was able to resolve this issue was to unistall Adobe Reader X (10.1.2) from my PC and everything went back to normal.
Is there a way to have both Adobe Acrobat 7.1 Standard and Adobe Reader X (10.1.2) installed on my PC without experiencing the above issue?
Please note that I need to have both programs, but I cannot afford to spend money to upgrade my current version of Adobe Acrobat.

Thanks for your input Michael Kazlow.
However, it appears that contrary to your statement, it is possible to run different versions of Acrobat and Reader at the same time.
I have found this Adobe's article outlining 4 diffent solutions to resolve the issue I was experiencing in my original request on this forum http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/860/cpsid_86069.html
In my particular case, I was able to resolve my issue by following the first solution in the article.

This usually occurs if you use a browser that uses its own PDF viewer, not the Adobe Reader plugin; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html

  • Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close.

When reading PDF attachments, I get the following:  Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried to remove Adobe Reader via Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs but that won't work.  I get this:  This patch package could not be opened.  Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package. I don't know how to do what is being asked.  I have tried to download Adobe Reader again but get this when I do:  Note:  this application already installed.
I have Adobe Reader X (10.0.1) with an update installed on 2/19/2011.  I have Windows XP SP3.
Anyone who can help me get Adobe Reader working correctly again or uninstalling it so I can reinstall.
    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the input.  Did you remove Adobe Reader 10 first before you downloaded the older version?  If you removed it, how did you do that?  The add/remove programs in control panel won't let me remove it -- it says a patch package can't be opened.

  • Getting "adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close

On Windows XP service pack 3. Adobe Reader X
Get "Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close." . I have uninstalled adibe and reinstalled it and problem came back within 2 weeks after working for a short time.

    Try the following:
    Uninstall Adobe Reader X
    Reboot your computer
    Delete directory C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0
Download the EXE or the MSI installer from ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.1.0/ and execute e.g. either of the following files:
    AdbeRdr1010_en_US.exe
    AdbeRdr1010_en_US.msi
    Good luck!

You don't provide any details, but from the sound of it you are trying to open an online PDF in a browser that does not use the Adobe Reader plugin: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html

  • How can I open pdf attachments in email? Adobe reader used to do this, and does not.

About 3 weeks ago, I suddenly could not open pdf attahments while reading my email. I now must down load them and save, in order to open them. Can someone help me to fix this? They open on my desk top, but not in Internet explorer. I would like to see them before down loading. What can I do to fix this problem?

Enable the Adobe Reader plugin in browser : http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/pdf-browser-plugin-configuration.html

  • Need help with Adobe Reader 11.0.0.8 and Group Policy Objects

I am trying to deploy Adobe Reader 11.0.0.8 using Adobe Reader.
I am using the AcroRead.msi I found in
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Setup Files\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-AB0000000001}
    HOWEVER
Instead of installing 11.0.0.8 it installs 11.0.0.0
I have not had anyone complain about it asking for an update. But I'm sure it's only a matter of time. (I know about the customization which could prevent the updates, but I can't figure out how to get the correct version installed is the issue not the updates).
So if I run the Setup.exe it ends up installing 11.0.0.8 but AcroRead.msi I think only installs 11.0.0.0
Obviously you can't give a GPO an .exe so it's a closed loop. You can't use an .exe to install the proper version. And you can't install the proper version because you can't use an .exe
You can only use the .msi which apparently only does 11.0.0.0
I've been trying this that, have done jumping jacks and back flips trying to fix this (tried different versions, different approaches to this, nothing seems to work)
Need some help. THIS IS WAYYYYYYY WAYYYYYYYYYYY Overcomplicated btw, shouldn't be this complicated for something so mundane.

A couple of approaches and all involve a bit of work.
    Three steps:
Do the install of the 11.0.0 MSI at the command line
Then follow it with the 11.0.07 Updater MSP at the command line
Finally the 11.0.08 Security Patch MSP at the command line.
    AIP
Create the AIP from the three files above then then run the MSI from the command line.

I followed the FAQ troubleshooting and that didn't help

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

If you just mean, can I close it, sure. In Reader XI click the Tools button to close or reopen it.

  • Saved an email yesterday in Adobe Reader, now where is it and how do I open that PDF?

saved an PDF email in Adobe Reader, now where is it and do I open it? It has job application that need to orient out?

x11 needs to be installed from the OS X install cd that shipped with your mbp (its burried in one of the folders, don't remember which off hand - sorry).
as for removing developer tools... personally, i wouldn't. if you ever plan on installing stuff from source via fink or darwinports or want to install apache/php for some reason, you'll need the developer tools. they do come in very hand, but if you are so incline to remove them, open up a terminal window (/Applications/Utilities) and issue the command
    sudo /Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl
that should prompt you for your password. Just walk through it and it'll clear them out.
If you really want to use open office on os x, i'd highly suggest neooffice

  • "Adobe Reader is out of date and may be insecure."

I have a user running Reader 11.0.06 on a new Windows 8.1 computer. When connecting over the Internet to corporate Acrobat 9 Pro she gets the message "Adobe Reader is out of date and may be insecure." Repeated attempts to execute the prompt "Update Adobe Reader now" result in the same situation. We have uninstalled and reinstalled Reader XI and also tried turning OFF enhances security. None of that has helped. How can I get Reader XI working on Windows 8.1?

We have figured out that it is a Chrome problem. When connecting to a remote Acrobat site, Reader XI in Win 8.1 comes up with "Adobe Reader is out of date and may be insecure." Repeated updates and installs do not repair. However there is no problem in Firefox. This is an unfortunate browser incompatibility.

  • Adobe Reader X locks address bar and search box in Firefox

    Hi all,
I've been using Adobe Reader X in Firefox 3.16 and I've just noticed an interesting "feature".
When reading a pdf from the web, Adobe Reader locks the address bar and search box so you cannot type a new address or search using the google search box. It just won't let you enter any text. Even on opening a new blank tab. Has anyone else come accross this and is there a fix? Cheers.

Oh it was a problem with Adobe's Plug-in. As per [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/804580#answer-167069 MrKoffee's answer ], I noticed that I already had Adobe Reader X installed but nevertheless I went to adobe.com to download it again. When I installed it this time, it said "installing updated patch". Went back to Firefox to check and problem solved! :)
Ps. did not need to disable any previous plug-in or even close Firefox.

    Hi.
Adobe Reader is a free product. Are you talking about Adobe Acrobat perhaps? If so, you'll want to talk to customer service at Adobe.
