Adobe reader x, and win7, sha-1 instead of sha-256

Good afternoon,
i have a problem similar to that posted at
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3707345
i try to sign the pdf (enable for signing with adobe livecycle ES, Right Managements)
but it always is signed with hash algorithm SHA-1
The hardware vendor of the smartcard, says that the problem is an adobe problem, because signing the file with its legacy software all works fine, and with its software the digest is SHA-256 (but the produced file is obviously not a signed pdf..)
For italian law the supported digest is SHA-256, and NOT SHA-1
I'm using the latest adobe reader version (10.1) and Win7
P.S.: adobe livecycle, enabling the pdf for signing with livecycle Right Management Service, put a sign with an adobe certificate and returns a pdf ready to be signed, and in this pdf the adobe sign is SHA-1
could be this the problem?
So, before signing the pdf it just contains an adobe SHA-1 sign (coming from livecycle web service)
With regards

Hi GP,
It's the smart card (or more correctly the software on the smart card) that is the bottleneck to getting to SHA-256. Here's what happens:
NOTE: When I say Acrobat I really mean both Acrobat and Reader
•    The user initiates the signing operation
•    Acrobat asks the user to pick a digital ID
•    The user select a digital ID from the drop-down list on the Sign Document dialog and then clicks the Sign button
•    Acrobat needs to write the file to disk for security purposes (another issue) and puts up the Save As dialog
•    The user selects a file name and save location and Acrobat writes the file to disk and it's at this time two things happen:
o    The signature appearance is created so it can be part of the signed data (what you see in the signature field is not the signature, but rather a pictorial representation of the signature)
o    A hole is created in the file and filled with zeros as a place holder where the actual signature will be written
•    Acrobat computes the digest over the file, excluding the hole filled with zeros. By default Acrobat is using the SHA-256digest method
•    Acrobat needs to get the digest encrypted (signed) by the private key associated with the signers digital ID
o    If Acrobat has access to the private key it calls on the RSA library to do the encryption,
o    If Acrobat doesn't have access to the private key it sends the SHA-256 digest to the software that does have access to the private key... In your case that's the cryptographic software residing on the smart card
•    It's up to the cryptographic software to feed the 32 byte SHA-256 digest into its encryption algorithm and have the private key encrypt the digest
•    The software on the smart card cannot handle a digest as large as 32-bytes, so it returns an error
•    In Acrobat 9.0.0 and earlier once the error message was returned the signing process was aborted and signature did not get created. Starting with version 9.1 if a PKCS#11 (the specification for smart cards) error is returned  Acrobat falls back to re-computing the digest using SHA-1 and starts the process again. It's here where the smart card software is getting the 20-byte SHA-1 digest and can get it encrypted using the private key.
•    Once the encrypted SHA-1 digest (this is really the digital signature) is computed the smart card sends it back to Acrobat
•    Acrobat in turn writes the signature into the hole it created in the PDF file, overwriting the zeros with actual hex values.
And that’s how you get a digital signature based on the SHA-1 digest method. If you absolutely need to use SHA-256 your only option is to get a newer smart card that can handle the larger digest.

  • Adobe Reader XI and Firefox 19.0

    Hi,
Recently i downloaded Adobe Reader XI and it worked ok when viewing with Google Chrome or IE 7--there was a floating toolar and  I could instantly view PDFs in read mode which  i wish to. For my Firefox 19.0 there's no floating toolbar at the  bottom of each PDF i try to open only. Instead a sign appears on top "This PDF document might not be displayed correctly". Can some one help?

How can I make Adobe Reader 9 open for incoming PDFs instead of Acrobat 5.0?

    Hi,
Assuming that you have Reader 9.3.4 already installed on your machine, you can try the following to make Reader 9.3.4 as the default PDF opening application:
    1. Right click on any PDF on your system and click on the "Open With" Option in the context menu that appears. In case you get another submenu, click on Chose Program in that menu. (In case you do not see any "Open With" option, then hold down the Shift key and right click on the file)
    2. Click on Browse button in the dialog that appears, and select Reader 9. Make sure that you select the checkbox for "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"
    3. Click on OK.
This will make Adobe Reader 9 as the default viewer for all PDFs on your system.

    Hi Timia,
If you are using Safari as a web browser :-
Open Safari, go to Safari menu > Preferences > General, and put Google as the homepage. Then, choose Google as your default search engine.
If you are using Google Chrome as the web browser :-
      Open Google Chrome.
In the top right corner of the page, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu > Settings.
In the "Search" section, select Google from the drop-down menu.
Let me know if you still experience any issue.

I have an issue that only happens when using Adobe Reader 9 and Mac OSX 10.5.
When submitting a form from within a PDF, the FDF that gets sent is completely blank.
Tested on Mac OSX 10.4 with Adobe Reader 9 - no issue
Tested on Mac OSX 10.5 with Adobe Reader 8 - no issue
Tested on Mac OSC 10.5 with Adobe Professional 8 - no issue
It only seems to be a combination of OSX 10.5 and Reader 9. Does anyone have any clue about the settings of these two and what might be happening?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Saving PDF forms in Adobe Reader 8 and below

    Hi everyone,
I've created a PDF form for a survey using Acrobat XI Pro, and I've also Save As Other > Reader Extended PDF > Enable More Tools (includes form fill-in and save). I've tried it on Reader 9, X and XI, and I'm able to fill out the form, save it and email it back to myself. I've also emailed it to a few of my friends to try out the form and email it back to me, and most of them are able to do so.
But the problem is one of my friends who's using Reader 8 is unable to save the completed form. This message comes out when he tries to save it:
"This document contained certain rights to enable special features in Adobe Reader. The document has been changed since it was created and these rights are no longer valid. Please contact the author for the original version of this document."
I've tried reading about this problem online, but I can't seem to find a satisfactory answer anywhere. I'm not sure if anyone knows of a way to overcome this, or if it's just simply that Adobe Reader 8 and below are unable to save a PDF form.
Please help, I'm really at my wit's end.

    Windows Vista.
I'm trying to make sure my form works for every one of my respondents, as I can't be sure what kind of Reader versions each respondent will be using.

The add annotations field shows as not allowed in the security options. So how do I send this form back with the changes??

I think you you need to click 'save' first, then it is saved to acrobat, where it will prompt to send.

    Google Chrome is a problem:
if you use Chrome's own PDF viewer, the results are unpredictable.
if you use the Adobe Reader plugin with Chrome, it may reject (block) it if it is not the latest version.  Reader 11.0.08 is the latest version for Windows XP, but Chrome may insist on the current version 11.0.10.
My suggestion; use a different browser!

    Hi noswam123,
If a PDF file is password protected, the only way to open that document is with the password. You will have to get that password from the person who created the PDF.

I upgraded several months ago but noticed that Adobe Reader 8 and 9 are still in my Adobe folder under programs.  Can I delete those folders/files or does Reader 10 need them??

The standard advise is to rewmove all traces of previous versions of
Reader before proceeding to a new install. If the previous versions have
not been removed, the standard advise is to remove all trace

stalling the one you want. To eliminate

  • Century gothic displays in adobe reader 8 and not in 9

    Hi
I have created a pdf using adobe livecycle and i have set the address font in my header to Century Gothic. When i view the doc in Adobe reader 8, it shows it exactly the way i want. When i view it in adobe 9, it has changed to arial. Why is this happening? and how can i prevent it from changing when viewed in the different versions of adobe reader?
Also, it doesnt make sense to say that the font is supported in adobe 8 and NOT in 9. Surely capability should be backward compatible?
    PLEASE HELP!!!
    Fatima

    Hi Hitender
The document does not show the correct font in Adobe Reader 9.0. We have now downgraded our adobe reader on the server where we are printing the docs from.  We have tried installing the font onto that server but that was also unsuccessful.
Please let me know if you have any advice for my problem.
    Thanks
    Fatima
