Adobe Reader X leaks GDI handles in quick search box

Just installed Adobe Reader X a couple of days ago (Windows 7, x64). I used it for numerous online documents (in Firefox), while searching for some specific terms in each document. After a while the reader presented a strange picture, not properly painting itself anymore. Then, the reader became unresponsive, and Firefox too, and I had to kill the task.
This happened a few times on different pdf documents.
In my programming career things like these have happened more often so, when the behavior happened again, I went checking the process using Windows Task Manager, adding a few extra columns (Handles, User Objects, GDI Objects) and found that the number of GDI objects was nearly 10000, the absolute limit that Windows imposes on any single process.
I went on checking the reader, now standalone and without Firefox, to see if the problem would persist. Opened a few pdfs and scrolled back and forth. No problems -
tried the same in Firefox to see if the plugin was OK - still no problem.
Then started using the quick search box (Ctrl-F) and repeatedly looked for something trivial (e.g. just a single letter A) - Bingo! Now the GDI handle count starts rising seriously, and does not come back to the original level.
This is definitely a leak, and it needs to be fixed.

We don't process bug reports via these forums - please post any details of unexpected behaviors to the official reporting form.

  • How do I enable The Google Quick Search Box feature?

The Google Quick Search Box on the toolbar no longer will search when entered. The search request registers but won't search. I have to go to Google.com in order to use the Google search engine. The quick search was handy and I'd like to have it back. Per Google I need to enable it by clicking on the "wrench", search and enable... but it's not there to enable. HELP!

You can also access the Google Toolbar Options thru Tools > Addons > Extensions - Google Toolbar for Firefox & then right-click that extension and click on Options.

  • How do I safely download google quick search box?

Can anyone tell me, how do I safely download Google Quick Search Box?

I'd likely use Spotlight or the google widget in Dashboard, although I usually stick with highlighting a word to search for, then ctrl-click & pick 'search with google'.
QSB development seems to have ceased in 2010, and it was still 'beta' software then.
http://www.alfredapp.com/ seems popular with some, and is in the app store.

  • Google quick search box

I lost the google quick search box from the screen of my droid and I am unable to locate the correct app. Also, someone told me about an amp to scan items and it then gives you a list of stores and which is the better buy.

Right... the original Google Search widget is just called "Search"
The new enhanced widget that comes with Froyo is called "Google Search"
As long as you're running 2.2 you should now see both under widgets.
    +1 to ShopSavvy
Just a couple of weeks ago it found me a new Linksys wireless router on sale locally at Radio Shack (a one day only sale) for about $45 instead of Best Buy where I happened to be standing at the time, they wanted about $75 for the exact same model.

  • Quick Search box in Safari 6.0

My safari 6.0 browser used to have the google quick search box on the right side and it had disappeared. does anyone know how to get it back?

Thank you. I just tested that out and it did do the google search. however, i believe the way it used to work was that when you put in a search in the box on the right, it opened a new tab automatically. Now, I need to hit the plus to open a new tab before doing the search. do you know what the setting is to open a new tab with a new search? Thanks a lot and you did solve my initial question.

  • Grey Quick Search box does not go away

I have a 5G iPod Video that I just updated to 1.2, now when I am in list of albums or songs the quick search box appears showing the letters as you scroll, but it doesn't go away after I have made my selection. The gray box just stays on top of what ever is being displayed behind it (song info, album art, etc). In only goes away when I turn the iPod off.

  • Adobe Reader 9.5.4.268 shows a search button in embedded but not in standalone mode

Ever since Adobe Reader was updated to the "new" look I could not figure out how to search PDFs. The previous version had a convenient "find" field in the toolbar. I visited the http://kb.mozillazine.org/Adobe_Reader page, which provides a link to the test PDF at http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/testpages/pdf.html.
Surprisingly, the embedded PDF shows a magnifying glass button which provides access to the search functions. However, this button is missing when the same test PDF is opened in a standalone mode within the browser (Firefox 20.0.1).
Why the difference and is there a place to customize the Adobe Reader toolbar?

You are most likely using the built in PDF reader in Firefox, not Adobe Reader. [[Use the Adobe Reader plugin to view or download PDF files]] can help you switch back to Adobe (which you should update to version 11 BTW)

    Hi John,
Have you tried repairing Reader and checked?
Does this issue occur only on this machine or are you facing the issue with other computers as well which have updated to Reader 11.0.10?

  • Adobe Reader Not Working after OS 2 UPGRADE

Hope someone can help with this issue.  Updated to OS 2, but now the Adobe Reader does not work.  Since this was a new device and the upgrade started automatically, I have no idea if Adobe Reader worked in the previous OS version - from the forums, it seem to work.  The shortcut icon is still there but when you click on it,  Adobe Reader opens but is non-functional.  Clicking on a PDF does nothing.  I then tried to uninstall it in My World in Blackberry World Apps.  In the Installed section, it shows Adobe Reader as being installed but I noticed that the Delete button was greyed out so I could not uninstall it for a reinstall.
It was interesting to note that when I tried to find Adobe Reader in BB World Apps, there was no listing for Adobe Reader.
Does anyone else have the same issue?  Hopefully there is a solution for this problem.  Is there another alternative app to Adobe Reader?  Thanks.

Here is a quick test if to check if your Adobe Reader is currently working properly within its current confinement. Open the app and click on ‘Browse’.
If you can browse around, the app is working properly. If you can’t, close Adobe and then open it once more and try to browse.
If you still can’t browse it is time to ‘Restart’ your PB via the battery icon’s ‘Restart’ option.
Once your PB’s main screen loaded again repeat the test. I am sure you can browse now but don’t open a file yet. We need a ‘known’ conforming PDF file.
Now, this might be a bit of a surprise. Not all PDF files are created equally. Therefore, some PDF files can’t be opened by this Adobe Reader’s version without ‘hanging’ the app as indicated by ’not able to browse anymore’.
Please, download a conforming PDF file like the manual for the Playbook and select ‘Download PDF’ from this BB site:
    http://docs.blackberry.com/en/smartphone_users/deliverables/27018/index.jsp?name=User+Guide+-+BlackB...
Now open Adobe and select the newly downloaded file: “BlackBerry_Playbook_Tablet_User_Guide—“and it should open all 86 pages. Scroll around. This 2nd test verifies that your Adobe Reader is working because this file was created to follow the Microsoft – Adobe agreed upon standard which the PB is following.
So at this point in time we users have to except that some files are non-conforming and that Adobe Reader version 10.0.3 needs an update.  BTW, I couldn’t find Adobe’s security setting in my PB either (this is not a 'fix' for OS 2 users).
Remember, Adobe cannot open files directly if you browse to your smartphone’s Adobe documents even so they might be ‘conforming’. You have to open these files first via File Manager (found on your main screen) so Adobe gets a trusted link which it stores in its hidden “Recent Document' folder. I guess, this link then allows Adobe to open conforming files which are stored in your smartphone the next time you open this linked  Adobef PDF file without the help of the File Manager.
Your question: Is there another alternative app to Adobe Reader? Contributor sohrabza suggested to use an Android app called ‘Repligo’. I looked a bit into this and it is not yet a downloadable PB app unless you know how to a handle a bar file installation in your Playbook together with their Android version. They also make a Repligo version for the BB smartphone so they know RIM. I can’t believe cerience has not readied the Playbook App store download version to get my $4.99. Many users might want to choose this alternative PDF reader once it is available in the BB AppStore but their website does not give a hint if their app approval is pending with RIM.

  • Adobe Reader does not open any PDF when double clicked

I am using a Mac with Yosemite. When I double click a PDF to open it, it will not open. The only way it will open is right clik PDF/Open With/Applications/Adobe Reader app. or right click PDF/Quick Look. Thanks funnnyfarm

It worked. I don't see why the Protected Mode is enabled in the first place, if it were to cause issues.
    Anyways, thanks Sabian,

  • Adobe reader x and Autodesk Architecture

I have installed Adobe Reader x on my computer. When I make a pdf in Architecture, it allows me to do it but then I get an error message that says that I haven't installed a pdf reader on my computer and can't view it, even though it has saved the file! I then can go to the file, open it and email it. I used to be able to create the pdf and instantly view it in Adobe reader. Any suggestions as to why this is happening and how to fix it would be most appreciated.

Sounds like Architecture isn't looking in the right place for Adobe Reader - there's probably a configuration option in Arch that's still pointing at the folder for Reader 9, but you'll need to ask in the Autodesk forums for help with that product. There's certainly no reason why Adobe Reader X would be "incompatible", as Arch is simply loading the program and handing it a filename.
I assume that Adobe Reader is the registered handler for PDF files, so when you double-click a PDF file it opens in Reader X? If not, repair your Reader X install.

  • Adobe Reader X cannot respond to printer properties number of copies issue

    Hi to all!
I have an issue using Adobe Reader X 10.0.1, 10.1.0, 10.1.2, when select File > Print > Page Handling: Copies = 1, click Printer Properties > Page Setup, specify eg. Copies : 5, it print 1 copy only instead of 5 on Windows platform.
Happen to a number of printers, eg. HP, Epson, Xerox, Canon, Brother printer, etc.
For some reason, Adobe Reader X cannot respond to the No. of copies specified in the printer properties.
Anyone have any solutions or workarounds to solve this issue besides specifying Adobe Reader X : File>Print>Page Handling: 5 copies?
Is there any website, forum, supporting documents, with regards to above scenario?
Please kindly advice, thank you in advance!

    Hi LoriAUC,
    Sorry for the late response!
The users had a habit of going into the printer properties to specify other printer options eg. 2-sided printing, manual feed printing, heavy paper, etc... besides the number of copies inside the printer properties as well. Therefore, they prefer to do all the various changes in the printer properties instead of changing it at the Adobe Reader dialog.
The same method were applied by all the users in Adobe Reader 9.4.7 and there were perfectly no issue at all! All the network printers (23 different brands and models in the network) responded to the printer properties "number of copies" accordingly.
It seems that Adobe Reader X dialog Page Handling: No of copies, cannot synchronise and recognise the "No of copies" specified in the printer properties. This symptom was tested and found to be the same behaviour for different printer manufacturers. Wonder if there is a bug with Adobe Reader X as this issue did not occur for Adobe Reader 8 and 9 versions. The users were using Reader 8 and 9 versions before and there were no complaints until it was eventually all upgraded to Reader X, starting from 10.0.1, 10.1.0 and now 10.1.2.
What do you think could be the cause?

  • Adober Reader suddenly won't open any PDF files (Mac)

I had an old version, I downloaded the latest one, upgraded to the newest, even tried taking that one out and downloading an older version. It doesn't matter which version I seem to have, it won't open any pdf files from the web.
I use a Mac, and Safari. It used to always load PDF files fine, one random place said I had to update it so I did and since then, lately it'd crash and close all Safari windows when loading a PDF or trying to copy something from a PDF. The smart Mac message I have says it could be related to an Adobe Plug in. However, now it won't even load PDF files at all, it always goes to a white page. Nothing happens.
What do I do?? I can't even save the PDF's as individual files and view then in Preview as an alternative option. It's a link online and normally would work. What happened??
    HELP!
    I have a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8
I've always used Safari, it's Version 5.0.5 (5533.21.1 if that means anything).
Acrobat Reader, currently an old version 9.4.0 download. BUT, I had also the 10.0.1 version which also doesn't work. When I had that 10.0.1 version and checked for updates, there was an update (.3 I think?) and I did that and that also doesn't work!
Why did it suddenly stop working?
What can I do to fix it ASAP?
Only with 9.4.0 version I can go to Help and "Repair Adobe Reader Installation" - I click that and the only box I can select is "Adobe PDFViewer Safari Plugin - View, fill-in and collaborate on Adobe PDFs within Safari"  - I click continue and it tells me there's "No missing components detected. Repairs are not needed." The only option is to click "OK".
With any newer version of Adobe Reader, under Help there is no option to "Repair Adobe Reader Installation". So... I can't even try that with a new version.
I am at a loss for solutions. Hope someone here can help! Thanks!

There are several things you can do. My first step would be to repair permissions. If that doesn't work log on as a different user. If all works properly then you have a corrupt preference file (most likely) or a corrupt user font installed in your user Library (less likely). If that doesn't work download Applejack. Have it repair the disk, remove all system caches and user caches. Then have it check all system and user preference files. Remove any preference files that are corrupt. Reboot and see if your system is working properly.

  • PDF's won't print in Internet Explorer after upgrading to Adobe Reader 11.0.03

PDF's won't print in Internet Explorer 9 after upgrading to Adobe Reader 11.0.03.
The print dialogue box won't open....nothing happens.
Desktop OS is Windows 7 SP1.

Two obvious troubleshooting techniques are to delete and re-install the printer driver (or updating printer driver) and fixing the installation of Acrobat. Have you given those a try?
