Adobe Reader X Locking Up or Not Launching

Windows Vista® Home Premium with Service Pack 2 (32-bit and 64-bit)
Processor: Pentium Dual-Core CPU  T4200 @ 2.00 GHz.
Memory (RAM):  3.00 GB
System type:  32-bit Operating System
Over the past several months, Adobe Reader X has been locking up after openning a .pdf file. The file opens, fully visable as normal, but locks up - "Not Responding" - when I take any action (page down, try to print, etc.).  I uninstalled and downloaded a number of times as the first fix attempt and encountered the following.  (1) When selecting a .pdf file to open, the Adobe Reader title page opens, but then immediately locks up.  (2) When selecting via the shortcut or Start Menu/All Programs/Adobe Reader, the program does not launch and the following error displays: Fatal Error: Acrobat failed to connect to a DDE server.  I have enjoyed the use of Adobe Reader since 2007 and find this frustrating and disappointing.  Please advise.

The latest download for Windows Vista is 10.1.4; update it using Help | Check for Updates, or download the update from Adobe - Adobe Reader : For Windows : Adobe Reader 10.1.9 update - All languages
To apply the registry script:
download protected10.zip and save it to disk (e.g. your Downloads folder)
using Windows Explorer, double-click on the downloaded file; it should open and reveal protected10.reg
double-click on the protected10.reg file to execute it

I prefer Preview as my default reader. Somehow Adobe Reader has locked itself as the default. How do I reset back to Preview?

First order of priority - Establish what platform is in use. In this case: MacBook Air with Trac Pad, no Mouse.
Second - Establish Operating System in use. In this case: OX 10.8.3.
Third - Establish, as best as you are able, the parameters in which you have been attempting a work-around and, to include mention of, any other secondary software program capable of becoming a default other than, in this case, Preview.
Fourth - State the problem: Adobe Reader somehow automatically has become the Default PDF viewer.
Here's my answer: When a trac pad not a mouse is in use - Select the PDF you will be opening; don't open it, Select it. At this juncture, tap COMMAND - I (Unfortunately Apple has no Drop Down Menu motion to achieve this operation that I can determine); at this point you will get this:
Click on "Open with: " If you see Adobe Reader there in lies the problem. So, simply click the "up/down" arrows on the Selection Window, and from there click on Preview. From there on Preview will be your Default program.
Thank you to everyone who helped in reply to my initial query.

  • Adobe Reader 'Attach to Email' is not working

I have a client that is running Windows 7 and when opening a PDF with Adobe Reader is unable to use the "Attach to Email" function. We tried this with Adobe X, Adobe 9.3, Adobe 9.4.2. None of these will work. An error occurs: "Acrobat is unable to connect to your email program." We get the same error on any of these versions. For some reason Adobe 9.3.4 upgrade does not install with 9.3, where I read in a resource discussion that this version should work ion Windows 7.
Adobe Reader X seems to be a known issue with Windows 7 for this problem. My client recently upgraded from Windows XP and did not have this problem on that OS. A current work-around is to save the PDF then attach it to an email, but she would greatly prefer to use the Attach to Email function within Adobe Reader without having to save the PDF and manually attach it.
    Thanks for any help!

I have the same issue using Acrobat X and Thunderbird 3.1.6 on Windows 7.  Attach to email function is NOT working.
It worked when I had outlook 2007 installed, but I couldn't find where to change the setting to thunderbird.
I uninstalled outlook.  Now the attach to email feature won't work at all.
Thunderbird is set to the default email client in windows . . . this is extremely annoying!!
File > Attach to email . . .  It appears this feature doesn't work with any emails client except outlook??????
Attach to email worked on WinXP for Lotus Notes 8.5 email client (maybe an older Adobe Reader, version 9.4), but not after we upgraded to Win7. No Adobe Reader versions we have tried will work on Win7 for Lotus Notes.

  • In Windows 7 using Adobe Reader XI (11.0.07) was able to copy an item (name, number, date) and paste in another document.  In Windows 8.1 using same version of Adobe Reader XI (11.0.07) not able to do this.  Any solutions?

With computer running Windows 7 using the curser can select an item, then right click and select copy.   With computer running Windows 8 there is a hand instead of a curser therefore unable to select an item, therefore unable to copy.  Is there a way to have a curser rather than the hand?
Eureka!!!   Just found by right clicking on the hand can then select “Select Tool” and then copy.  Hurray!!!

  • Cannot embed pdfs in MS Word doc which are PDF Version 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x) [This is associated with Adobe Reader 9]. Getting 'program not installed' error.

Cannot embed pdfs in Word doc which are PDF Version 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x) [This is associated with Adobe Reader 9]. Getting 'program not installed' error.
Pdfs with other versions are okay:
Tested successfully with Adobe Pro 9 (Version 1.5 (Acrobat 6.x)), Reader X (Version 1.4 (Acrobat 5.x)) and XI (Version 1.6 (Acrobat 7.x))
Also cannot open embedded pdfs which have been embedded with this version (getting a similar error).
Importantly I have removed/disabled all security options in Adobe Reader, following numerous internet suggestions from Adobe and elsewhere. This does not fix the problem.
Currently the work around is to re-save the pdf with something other than Adobe Reader 9 (so the version updates), but we would prefer not to do this for all the old pdfs we have.
    Thank you,
    Louise.

Could you please email me the document on which you are seeing this issue at [email protected] ?
Please mention the forum thread link as well in the mail for the reference.
    Thanks,

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

  • Adobe Reader 11.0 (AcroRd32) does not close

    Hi,
I am using CL_GUI_FRONTEND_SERVICES=>Execute method to print PDF form in foreground passing '/t' as parameter. Once executed the Adobe Reader opens and then the file opens and close and go to printer but the Adobe Reader remains open and does not close.
Is there any way I can close the reader too along with the document?
    Thanks for the help.
    Regards,

Whatever page orientation was provided during the PDF creation process will be the page orientation in the PDF.
This is what is presented to a PDF "viewer" (such as Adobe Reader).
Adobe Reader (or any PDF "viewer") cannot permanently change page orientation.
Adobe Reader (& other applications) is separate from installed printer drivers so it is expected that the application isn't retaining what is configured in the printer drivers.
(A change to a local or network printer's printer driver configuration does not "touch" the PDF viewer's configuration. - Cinnamon added to the mug of mulled applejack does not change the wine in the adjacent wine glass.)
Adobe Reader defaults to whatever a given PDF page's page orientation happens to be.
Using Acrobat one can permanently change a PDF's page orientation.
    Be well...

  • Adobe reader 10.1.2 could not open the file '/C/WINDOWS'

since adobe reader 10.1.2 urls don't work in pdf files to folders.
    C:\WINDOWS\xy.xls

    C:\WINDOWS
not ok > adobe reader 10.1.2 could not open the file '/C/WINDOWS'
    C:\WINDOWS
ok > with deactivated protected mode
no problems with 9.5.0 or 10.1.1 with activated protected mode
is that known? any other workaround?
    thanks

    Hi,
I also have Reader 10.1.2 installed on my machine and I also cannot open a link in the PDF, that will eventually call an exe file. I don't think that there would be different behaviour on your machine. So, I think, now this is the expected behaviour Reader 10.1.2 onwards.

  • Adobe Reader 9 locks up on certain files

I'm running Adobe Reader 9 on an XP machine. Most pdf files are fine, but some are having peculiar behavior. Someone has sent me pdf files that they've created from Excel 2007. If I try to open the file (via double clicking the pdf file or opening the Adobe Reader and using the File-Open options, the software freezes and no longer responds. I must kill it via the Task Manager.
After some attempts at troubleshooting, I've found a peculiar workaround. If I open the reader software, then change *anything* in the configuration (i.e. changing absolutely anything under preferences), then it will open all the files just fine after that. If I shut down the Adobe Reader and restart, it will not open these files successfully until I do the above workaround.
Anybody know how to fix this? Very strange.
    Robert

  • Adobe Reader 11.0.0.9 not responding on start up.

Adobe Reader 11.0.0.9 has been not responding on start-up resulting in a program crash. This also has been happening when trying to print. I've tried uninstalling the program and re-installing with no luck. I've also tried using the uninstall utility and re-installing Adobe Reader 11.0.0.9 and it will still crash just a few seconds after starting up.
Any ideas what might be causing the problem?

Thanks for the quick response, unfortunately it'll lock up before I am able to make the change.
The fix we had been using is to set it into WindowXP compatibility mode and launch the program. When launched in compatibility mode it starts with a prompt that allows you to disable enhanced security on start up. The deal breaker with that is that non admin users are required to enter admin credentials when launching Adobe.
I'm just curious why on a brand new clean installation of Adobe reader, on a brand new clean installation of Windows 7 Professional, is crashing on start-up. Are there any known issues caused by group policy?

  • Adober Reader 8.1.2 will not open new page links to .pdf file

Since upgrading to version 8, I cannot open a pdf file (from IE) if it opens in a new window. It opens local files, and links on pages that go directly to the pdf file, but not if the link opens the file in a new window. This means that I cannot open such things as my VISA statement, etc. What now?
I have Windows XP on a Dell desktop. If it makes any difference, I also have Adobe Pagemaker 7.0 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 loaded on this computer.
I really need this to work.
    Thanks.

Nothing showed in the Event Viewer log. However, just to be thorough:
    1. I uninstalled reader 6.0.1 and rebooted. (all pdf became unassociated)
    2. I deleted any acr*.tmp anywhere on my computer.
    3. I deleted The 6.0 folder from the application updates path
    4. I deleted the 6.0 folder from my install path.
    5. I deleted the Adobe folder from my temp directory.
    6. I ran CCleaner, cleaned app files and registry and repeated.
    7. I rebooted and repeated step 6.
    8. I opened Event Viewer, backed up and cleared all events from the log.
    9. I installed 8.1.2 (all pdf became associated with Acrobat Reader)
    10. Under Event Viewer/Application the event log displays: Product: Adobe Reader 8.1.2 -- Installation operation completed successfully.
    11. Under Event Viewer/System the event log displays: The Windows Installer service entered the stopped state.
    12. I tried to launch: the shortcut, a pdf and the exe file.
    13. There are no additional events added to any level of the event log.
    14. There is no indication of activity from Reader in the Task Manager: Applications or Processes. It never appears in either.
As a final note, I know the 8.1.2 install file is not corrupted because I copied it to another computer where it installed and runs just fine.
