Adobe Reader X refuses to install - indexing service filter daemon

I have closed all applications, but Adobe Reader X refuses to install, saying that something called "indexing service filter daemon" is open.  How do I get around this?

This is how I got around this install issue:
During install with the Indexing Service Filter Daemon message still open;
1) right click on My Computer
2) select Manage
3) double click Services and Applications
4) right click Indexing Service
5) select pause
6) in the Adobe X install message window, select Retry
It will have you reboot after install and it should automatically restart the service that you just paused.  If not, repeat the steps and select Start instead of Pause.
Hope that helps.

My Adobe Reader wouldn't download tickets.  Tried opening Adobe Reader application but it would not open.  I saw my Adobe Reader needed to be updated, so I attempted to install new Adobe Reader.  When it came to finalizing, it said there is an error and can't do.  Any ideas?  I have no functioning Adobe reader.  Should I uninstall old Adobe Reader and then try installing the updated AR?

  • Adobe Reader/Acrobat Is not Installed

I get an error on machines on our work network that says Adobe Reader/Acrobat is not installed. However most cases it is installed on the machine and in most cases it turns out to be the 8.1.1 version of Adobe reader. So what we have noticed is that the permissions do not seem to be right with the .pdf file extention. We manually add the users, power users group to the file extention and then we grant them full control over the extention and in most cases that as well will not work. The next step would be to uninstall 8.1.1 Adobe reader and then reboot. Upon the restart we will log on and install the 8.1.2 update. Sometimes this works but then again I have noticed that the users, power users group is not in the .pdf file extention. Then we will add them in and yet the user will still have the same error message. We have fun out of ideas and the other bad scenario is that this is free software and its very difficult to get support for. Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi snoreaustralia,
It sounds like you just need to associate the PDF filename extension with Acrobat, rather than Preview. Please see this document from the Microsoft Help for instructions on choosing the default program for opening a particular file type (in your case, PDF): Change which programs Windows uses by default - Windows Help

  • Adobe Reader 9 will not install on MacBookPro

After downloading the proper Adobe Reader 9 for my MacBookPro (Intel processor), I get the message " Adobe Reader 9 cannot be installed on this computer. Make sure your system meets the requirements." Anyone else have the same problem? Please help.

OK, I just realized the mix up in my earlier posting/s :-(
The *****.ppc.pkg is the powerpc version which I had downloaded earlier and the ******.i386 is the intel version which is the correct version for my MacBookPro. I use Firefox browser, and at first I thought that since Adobe was not in its list of allowed sites, it was preventing installation. However that is not the case, since the problem persists even after I added Adobe to the list of allowed sites, and even when I downloaded using Safari!
Mike, yes, I have rebooted a number of times, but have not yet tried to reinstall the OS from the disc. I do not quite understand what you mean by different administrative user; I am the only user. I just downloaded applejack and supposedly it was installed on volume HD, but I do not see it anywhere! Another mystery.

    Hi Raja,
I can understand your concern & will guide you in the right direction.
Let me know the version of Adobe Reader, web browser & operating system installed on your computer?
You can also refer to this KB doc. for the troubleshooting steps : Configure browser to use the Adobe PDF plug-in
*Note : The Adobe Reader plugin will not be supported in Chrome. The Chromium team has decided to remove support for NPAPI plugins like Adobe Reader. Here's a blog post that describes their decision - Chromium Blog: The Final Countdown for NPAPI

Adobe Reader 10 failed to  install. Upgrade hung up at "installing Features" & locked up system.  Tried second time and got "process interrupted" error.  Trch support NOT available, chat not available, nothing here seems to work.

When everything else fails, you may want to try the following:
Run this fix from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
Uninstall all traces of any versions of Reader using Add/Remove Programs
If you want to reinstall Reader, download it from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

  • Unable to open .pdf in Firefox 3.6.8 with Adobe Reader 9.3.3 installed. Error message is "The Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a web browser."

I am unable to open a PDF file in Firefox 3.6.8. Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.3.3 is installed. I get the error message "The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a web browser."

You can get that error if there is still an old Adobe Reader plugin in the plugins folder in the Firefox program folder.

  • Can't open PDF files in Safari 5.0.5 with OS 10.6.6, have Adobe reader 10.0.1 installed

Would appreciate some assistance if possible: I'm looking to de-bugg my system so that I can download, open, read and print .PDF files again.  My Macbook running in 10.4 was recently stolen, so needed to buy as a replacement a refurbished Macbook with OS 10.6.6 and Safari 5.0.5 installed.  Had this problem from the outset, so following some web-advice, I downloaded and installed the new Adobe reader 10.0.1.  So far it has not fixed the problem.  When I try to download a PDF and open it, the browser window comes up dark grey.  If I try to save it to the desktop or hard drive, it tells me the PDF file can not be exported.  It looks like I'm not alone in this, see the following link: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13106101?messageID=13106101

  • I can't open adobe reader, even after re-installing.

Everytime I try to open a pdf, i receive an error message saying 'Windows can not find 'C:XXXXXXX.pdf'. Make sure that you typed the name correctly, and then try again'.
Running Windows 7 Professional. Tried to install both v11 and v10 Adobe Reader - still no success. Tired opening files from C and D drive files with same result.
When trying to open up adobe reader from program files, i get the same error message. Something is blocking adobe reader from opening.

This may happen due to messed up registry settings.
    Try uninstalling using http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
    Reboot the system.
    Reinstall latest version from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

  • Adobe Reader 9 will not install reporting installatiom package could not be opened

I have WIN XP PRO with SP3. This is a new machine and is running beautifully except Adobe Reader 8 or 9 will not install.
At about 94% done the Adobe Download manager stops and shows the following Windows Installer message
The installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package.
Of course when I click OK. I get the message from the downloader that "Installation operation completed successfully". Which of course is not true.
Can any one explain what is happening, and how I should address?

Thanks for the help. Your solution to unregister and register msiexec did not resolve the problem, but it got me thinking and I continued looking down this line of thought through the Microsoft KB articles. There I found a comment per security rights authorization. I had been using an account with administrator rights, but I tried again using the actual administrator account. This worked fine. Adobe 9 is installed and running.
