Adobe Reader XI hides toolbar by default

I work at a service desk and have recently received a number of trouble tickets regarding the toolbar not populating by default.
I've adjusted the end user's settings a number of times but could still not get the toolbar to display after changing the settings when the user closed the document and moved on to the next document. Keep in mind that these users are accessing Reader through the Internet Explorer 9 extension.
Searching through the threads on this forum, I found this thread that states there was a defect in Adobe Reader X that was causing a similar issue. Has this defect been resolved, is it still open, or is this a new defect? Are there any workarounds?

What operating system?  Reader version?

  • Display PDF Dokument in HTML control with Adobe Reader X - hide toolbar

    Hello,
I am reading a document from a content repository via Archive Link Interface. I get the content by the function module SCMS_HTTP_GET. Afterwards the content will be displayed in a html control in the method SHOW_URL  in class
CL_GUI_HTML_VIEWER by calling the url SAPR3://SAPR3CMS/get/012/XX/0050568700A51EE0BDC6F305DFEDDF57/ with the following code.
    CALL METHOD call_method
       EXPORTING
         method  = 'ShowUrl'
         p_count = 2
         p1      = url
         p2      = frame
       IMPORTING
         RESULT  = m_result.
If I had a standard url like http//:...test.pdf it would be possible to hide the Adobe Reader X toolbar by the additional command &#toolbar=0
The SAP url SAPR3://SAPR3CMS/get/012/XX/0050568700A51EE0BDC6F305DFEDDF57/&#toolbar=0 is not working. Can anybody give me a hint how to get the toolbar hidden?
    Thanks and regards

I don't believe you answered the question. I have the same problem in that when I upgraded to Reader X my Toolbar disappeared and you responded to my post with a fix. Last week I installed updates to both Acrobat 8 and Reader X and in the process lost my toolbar and the floating toolbar. After "repairing" both Reader and Acrobat numerous times I find that at least the floating toolbar is back and F8 will of course deliver the traditional fixed, top of the page toolbar, but only for that specific open document. When I open a new document (from the web) I must F8 to get my traditional toolbar back. Below are the settings I am using to achieve this (I have tried every combination to try and make this work). Any help to get my toolbar back is very much appreciated.

  • Adobe Reader X - moving toolbars (toolbar customization)

In Reader 9, I can customerize the position of the toolbars.
Anyone know how to do this in Reader X?

It appears that customization of the toolbars is excruciatingly limited with X.
I know it won't do any good to vent here, but I think you would agree that Adobe needs to restore the previously customized toolbars!!  Trust me, I have voiced my concerns in the appropriate location, but I hope others will do likewise.
I was completely shocked to update to reader X and go back 15 years in toolbar design.
Toolbars should not be static.  Menus..maybe...Toolbars...no way!
    Toolbars should be customizable.
Sections of toolbars should be able to float together.
Users should not have to use a drop down menu because the tool they want to use is too far to the right to fit onto their single line toolbar.  At least give us the ability to prioritize which icons show up first if we are force to only have one line for a toolbar.
Users should be able to set up a whole toolbar in one pass, and not have to click "View > Show/Hide > Toolbars > Feature" for each feature they wish to add or delete from the toolbar.
"Take Snapshot" is by far one of the most useful tools Reader has, but it got relegated to priority #99?..and thus has to be accessed via drop down if I want other operations on the toolbar as well?
That goes for Rotate - I'm in design & construction.  Half the time non-computer literate office staffer who prints to PDF prints them upside-down or sideways.  Lucky for me Rotate functions get priority #s 94 & 95, and thus are likewise relegated to the drop down.
Why do "Comment" and "Share" take up so much real-estate?  I have limited need for these options on the toolbar!
Also, we should not have to rebuild our toolbars with every single released version of software.
What a terrible feature (lack of feature) in this release.  Adobe should X Adobe Reader X.

  • How can i make 'hide toolbar' the default in finder

Want to get rid of the Finder toolbar aka "Hide Toolbar" as the norm.  If it is a matter of turning the feature off completely and never seeing the side bar stuff and all the buttons, so be it.
    In short instead of this:
    I would like this
for every window I open without having to manually turn the tool bars off each and every time a new (vs old) window is opened.
Incidentally "FooCmd" is a project I am going to build that does this in some way. I should not have to write code... it should be something simple to make the windows in the finder more streamlined (isn't that the new way of Jony Appleseed?)

Found a brute force way of this which walks a tight rope.
First, close all of your Finder windows. Then delete all the hidden files named ".DS_Store" on every hard disk (volume) you have.  Then open a finder window on each disk, hide the toolbar with Command-Shift-T, then close the Finder window. After this, your default view for that disk becomes that last view you saw.  You have to do this for each disk which is kind of a pain but better than the "open folder, press command-shift-T" for every bloody folder.
    To do this via Terminal...
    1) Close all Finder windows (hold option key, close one of them)
    2) use SpotLight to find "Terminal" and launch Terminal
    3) type
                cd
and a space in the terminal window after the ">" prompt appears
    4) drag and drop a hard disk into the Terminal window after the "cd ". This puts the "path" name in there...
    5) press return. This sets the default folder location for Terminal (default directory) to the hard disk
    6) run this command (copy and paste it into terminal, press return after pasting)
sudo find . -name '*.DS_Store' -type f -delete
    7) when prompted, enter your administrator account password (yes, you need to be admin, sorry)
This will take a long time if you have a big disk, lots of folders, etc.  The square 1970's terminal cursor will sit there and blink under the "P" in the word "Password" for quite a while. (shades of the original "Tron" movie). There may be a couple of errors spit out by this command line tool, don't worry it continues on riding it's little light cycle through your hard disk wacking only the ".DS_Store" files as it goes.  The program named "find" will be eating quite a bit of processor if you are into checking on that sort of thing with Activity Monitor or another Terminal window with "top".
At the end you will have your display looking something like this (without all the red ink):
You need to repeat for each disk you have. Be aware that if you set the view to the "show toolbar" and then open a new folder below, that button junk-loaded window view default starts to take root again and spreads. (technically it's not a virus but it sure acts like one).

  • Adobe Reader 7 - Hide document pane popup menu

    Hello,
in Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 I would like to avoid users accessing the Preferences panel. I have hidden the corresponding toolbar and menu items via javascript. But I don't know how to hide the document pane popup menu (a triangle in the upper right corner of the document pane), which offers another way to access the preferences dialog.
Can this be done via javascript as well or is there any other chance to do that?
    Thanks for your help.
    St.M

    Hello,
    thanks for the reply.
So, is this feature (document pane popup menu) a Adobe Reader 7 specific one, because I've never seen this triangle in Reader 8?
    Thanks

  • How do I make Adobe Reader keep my toolbar settings?

Every time I double-click a PDF file to open it the toolbar is reset to display the default icons.  Any tools I have previously added are not kept.

    Hi Cleatus,
I replicated the same issue at my end. I added few tools to my toolbar & then switched between different sample pdf's, however all the tools were still present there.
I will recommend you to repair your Adobe Reader.
Launch Adobe Reader click on Help -> Repair Adobe Reader
    This might resolve your issue.
Let me know if the issue persist.
    Regards,
    Aadesh

  • Adobe Reader X (latest) Toolbar problems

One of the users at the company I work at has a particularly odd issue.  Every time he opens Reader X the toolbar is configured to a default.  The odd thing is this isn't the default that Adobe has. If I make changes and then restart Reader, it defaults back to the original toolbar.  If I delete the registry items for Reader, on first run it goes back to the default adobe toolbar but on second run it goes back to that default.  He does use a add-on called FileOpen but other than that it's about as standard an installation as it can get.
Is there any way to clear the settings for the toolbar so it's no longer locked to those toolbar settings?

I don't believe you answered the question. I have the same problem in that when I upgraded to Reader X my Toolbar disappeared and you responded to my post with a fix. • Adobe Reader will not set as default application for .pdf in windows 8.1 pro x64

When I install adobe reader the icon/app changes from windows reader to Pick an app, I choose change and select adobe reader, the icons on my desktop flicker but nothing actually changes.Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs\Set Program Associations, Select adobe reader, Choose defaults for this program, PDF is unticked so I tick it and choose save, go back in and it is unticked again??? Right click on a pdf file, choose open with, choose default program, use this app for all .pdf files is ticked, select adobe...Still nothing changes, stays on pick an app. I uninstall adobe reader then the pdf icon changes to and default opens with windows reader again. Reinstall adobe reader and back to the same thing. ???? I am a power user, build configure computers and subsequent software, started with DOS 6.0, learned unix/linux/networking concepts/networking security/server versions of windows/active directory. The only solution I could think of was to hack the registry which I looked for but could not find. I am running 8.1 pro x64, I just discovered that windows reader (which I cant uninstall) has the same problem when adobe reader is installed. Windows will not allow either one to be set as default while they co-exist.

After an extended session with chat only to be told that since Adobe Reader was free they could not help me :-(... I figured it out myself.
I opened a administrator: command prompt window and typed "regedit"  Through extensive searching and stumbled on this key located at... HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2274202122-2588692262-2244265822-1001_Classes\.pdf\OpenWithProgids  The S-1-5-21...1001... is my current logged on user, your value may differ slightly. Typically the builtin disabled administrator account is 1000 and when you install windows and create a user account "John Doe" it will have administrator priveleges and be auto numbered 1001, every user account created therafter will increase by 1 ie...1002, 1003, 1004 etc. even if you remove (delete) an account and re-create it you wont get the same number, the system will use the next number in sequence. The old one will have been trashed never to be used again. Again here is the key...
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2274202122-2588692262-2244265822-1001_Classes\.pdf\OpenWithProgids I deleted this key under (default) on the right side...
    Name                                                                       Type                                           Data
    (Default)                                                                   REG_SZ                                    (value not set)
AppX86746z2101ayy2ygv3g96e4eqdf8r99j            REG_NONE                              (zero-length binary value)  ---- This is the key to delete!!!
Personally I selected computer on the left side and the went to file/export then chose a file name [01 29 2014 regbackup.reg] and location. Then I selected "OpenWithProgids" and did the same thing,[pdf.reg] this saves a backup of the entire regestry and the key you are about to delete as a safety net. When you are done all you have to do is go to a pdf file, right click and choose open with...Adobe Reader - the box always use this app should already be checked.
I did this and it works yet because improper regestry modification can crash your system I am compelled to warn... Use at your own risk. If you are uncomfortable modifying your registry I would suggest consulting with someone qualified and has resources to do offline registry modifications/restorations which makes it VERY important to do the computer export registry backup.

  • I can't set Adobe Reader 9.3.4 as default .pdf

When I double click .pdf it doesn't open with Adobe Reader (AR). It used to open with AR 8 but wouldn't print from 8. I figured out that it would print from AR 9 and consequently deleted the AR 8 folder. However, now it won't associate .pdf with AR 9. I understand the simple trick of right-clicking, "open with..." and browsing or selecting Adobe Reader. I have found the Adobe Reader .exe file and when I click it, it doesn't select it in the default programs nor in the "other programs".
I am able to open AR 9 and manually look for the file and open it.
I'm running Windows 7 32-bit with Adobe Reader 9.3.4. Can't positively be sure I've effectively deleted all of AR 8. Thanks for the help.
    --J
PS please cut down on the jargon. I'm semi-computer savvy but to be safe...

Not a problem at all,I believe you completely .
On Reading your post once again I found you wrote
"It used to open with AR 8 but wouldn't print from 8. I figured out that it would print from AR 9 and consequently deleted the AR 8 folder".
Have you unistalled Reader 8 and then installed Reader 9 or simply deleted the folder?
I think association to AcroRd32.exe has got disturbed(AcroRd32.exe does not indicate its of AR8 or AR9).
So we will do another thing to solve your problem.
1.Unistall Reader from Control Panel>Add or Remove programs
2.Download 9.3.4 reader from http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.3.4/enu/AdbeRdr934_en_US.exe and run it.
Please tell if this (reinstallation) solves your problem?
(Note:If you face problem in unistallation ,download the Windows Installer Cleanup  Utility from http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html and run it.)

  • Adobe Reader xi: transparent toolbars and scrolling issues

Recently upgraded from v9 to v 11 on pc. Adobe Reader starts and opens PDFs. • Backup/Distribute Adobe Reader 9.4 Toolbar

I'm currently distributing Adobe Reader 9.4 via SCCM.
I would like to know how to backup and distribute the settings for the toolbar. Specifically, I need to add the save, email, first page and last page buttons for all my users.
If I can't backup a file that contains the toolbar settings, is it possible to programatically add buttons?
I've searched and not found any help thus far.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Hi all,
I just switched over to Adobe X due to the "search function" issue going on with the lastest Adobe Reader version.
Can someone tell me how to display the traditional "toolbar" in Adobe X?  I'm talking about the toolbar for searching for a word, or jumping to a page number, or increasing or decreasing the magification %.  I use those functions all the time...and can't find a way to get it now.

  • How can I prevent Adobe Reader X from being the default to open .pdf files?

I have Adobe Acrobat Professional 9.0 and will soon be getting V 10.
I want Acrobat to open my .pdf files NOT Reader.
Reader was installed because a certain program required it.

I recently added Adobe photoshop.  Now when I get a PDF attached to an email or the help file in another program it's automatically opened in Adobe Photoshop.  How do I change that to Adobe Reader?

I had MS Word set by Windows 7/64 as .PDF default and could not get any version of Adobe Reader to install as the default.  Adobe support rejected the case Your Case Number:0181940706. After much searching, I found a Windows forum (not in Microsoft) that had the attached tool.  Worked great, all pdf files now have acrord icons and open automagically (sic) with Reader X.
I've attached the link for you.  If Ray at Adobe support reaads this, feel free to share it with your co-workers. The tools can fix a defeult association for any file type.
