Adobe reader XI not updating to Adobe Acrobat DC

I see that my Adobe reader XI (11.0.10) is not updating to Adobe Acrobat DC.
Is that because they are different channels?
Should I shift to Adobe Acrobat DC? If so, what are the extra features does it offer over my current Adobe reader XI.

Hi Bunny ,
I would like to tell you about both the software .Adobe Reader is a software meant to view files .It is a free software from Adobe .
If you want to upgrade to Adobe Reader DC (that is different from Acrobat DC ) you could uninstall the present Acrobat XI version and install the latest Adobe Reader DC .
And yes ,they are different software that is the reason you could not upgrade from Adobe Reader XI to Acrobat DC .
Whereas Acrobat ( be it any version ,the latest Acrobat DC or any prior version ) is a paid software from Adobe .Acrobat is required to view and edit PDF' .
It is available in two flavors ,i .e Acrobat DC pro and Acrobat DC standard .You could either opt for Acrobat DC monthly subscription or opt for an annual one .
Here's is a list of some of the new features in Acrobat  DC and pricing policy .

  • Adobe Reader will not update from 11.0.0.6 to 11.0.0.7

I have tried installing the update to my Windows 8.1 machine, but it fails every time. When I right click and run as administrator from the download, it extracts, then pops up with:
"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."
From the Adobe ARM.log, there is an ERROR_SUCCESS that tells me it stayed at version 11.0.0.6.
From the AdobeSFX.log, there is a "Program finished with exit code:1642". (Which just tells me the same thing as the error pop up box.)
From the MSI Installation log there is this:
    : Unknown\Absent: {AC76BA86-7AD7-0000-2550-7A8C40011007} - C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Setup\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-AB0000000001}\RDC\AdbeRdrUpd11007.msp

I am testing the update before doing an enterprise rollout to Win8 and Win7 machines. I have tried the standalone update on other computers (Win7 and Win8) and I cannot get it to update.
I downloaded from here:  Adobe - Adobe Reader Distribution Selecting Windows 8, English, and 11.0.0.7
    From Administrative Command Line:
    AdbeRdr11007_en_US.exe -nos_oC:\Users\$$$$$$$\Desktop\Reader -nos_ne
    msiexec /a C:\Users\$$$$$$$\Desktop\Reader\Acroread.msi        network location: \\$$$$$$$\apps\adobe\reader11_0_0_7\
    msiexec /a \\$$$$$$$\apps\adobe\reader11_0_0_7\AcroRead.msi /p C:\Users\$$$$$$$\Desktop\Reader\AdbeRdrUpd11007.msp
This is not working either - which is not surprising considering that the update itself will not run. I can only guess that somehow the 11.0.0.6 update was incorrect somehow, but I have been using the same process to update the machines for more than 5 update cycles, so I am not sure what might have changed.
The point is, I do not want to do a complete uninstall and clean install on all of the machines in the company. Can anyone give direction with this?

I disagree about corrupted install.  Every 11.0.6 pc in my enterprise also cannot upgrade to 11.0.7.  We make AIPs following the same process for each patch.   Something is not right with 11.0.7 MUI.  I can create the AIP for 11.0.7 but cannot get the GPO to upgrade previous installations.  I think something is seriously wrong with the 11.0.7 MUI msp
The upgrade cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade.
I am using the 11.0 MUI installer to create the AIP and then I patch the AIP with 11.0.7 MUI .msp file per normal practice like I always do.  I am able to sucessfully create the 11.0.7 AIP without errors but none of my 11.0.6 MUI clients will upgrade successfully and are left at 11.0.6.
Something is broken with the 11.0.7 MUI .msp file.
Like I said, we do this the same way each time depending on quarterly update or security update and it ALWAYS works fine.  This is well documented.  We are following the exact same steps and something is seriously wrong with the new 11.0.7 MUI .msp file.  It will not properly upgrade 11.0.6 MUI installations.
We are using the 11.0 MUI as the base for slipstreaming the new 11.0.7 MUI patch.
    STEPS:
    1. Download AdbeRdr11000_mui_std.zip and extract to temp directory.
    2. Run: msiexec /a c:\aip\temp\acroread.msi TARGETDIR="c:\aip\11.0.7"
    3. Copy the AdbeRdrUpd11007_MUI.msp patch to c:\aip\11.0.7\
    4. Run:  msiexec /a c:\aip\11.0.7\acroread.msi /p c:\aip\11.0.7\AdbeRdrUpd11007_MUI.msp
    5.  Choose c:\aip\11.0.7 as the installation folder
    6.  When completed Copy c:\aip\11.0.7 to \\servername\AIP\
    7.  Configure GPO to upgrade over the top of existing installation of previous GPO 11.0.6 MUI using the correct UNC folder
This has worked every time other than this 11.0.7 MUI msp file.  It will not upgrade 11.0.6 installations.

    what to do?

Adobe Reader doesn't use AIR. There is no reason why an AIR update would affect Reader.

  • Adobe reader does not update

    Hi!
My Firefox constantly keeps claiming I need to update Adobe Acrobat. I have done it several time, using the file you link to. But no change. It is very annoying.

How do you get the message -- is the plugincheck page opening automatically when you start Firefox?
What version is being detected? (See attached example.)
Some program updates remain "pending" until you restart Firefox or even restart Windows. This depends on the conditions encountered by the software installer and you usually will get a message if a Windows restart is required.

  • Adobe Reader won't update

Adobe Reader will not update on my Windows 7 OS. It says:
    =========================================
    Update failed
Updates have been disabled by your system policy.

What does this mean? How can I fix it so that it WILL update again on its own?

No, just uninstall from Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.
As for the installer, you can download it directly from http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.4.0/en_US/AdbeRdr940_en_US.exe

Information and/or Pages were not opening.
Tried to go through all steps of updating
Ended up with plugins, add-ons, all updated and inadvertently got Firefox 4 instead of 3.6
    Things are not better
Believe it is Adobe Reader pages not opening
The pages are opening in Explorer
Have been wasting lots of time working on this for days
Also, Browser activity seems to be happening slower since these changes (like there are two systems fighting)

I checked for newer driver  and the result is in attachment. I have a doubt my system has NVIDIA GeForce GT520MX already there. If I download GeForce 314.07 driver will it harm my system ? Pls.revert.

  • Google search box in mid screen accepts text but is inactive. Adobe reader does not now function with Firefox. Both are new since update. Thanks

    1. The google search box in the middle of the FF page accepts text but is not active since my update. The search bar box works.
    2. Adobe reader does not seem to work with the new update. eg. Epost suggested I update Reader which I did but it still doesn't work. New since update. It works with Safari which I dislike or i would simply change.
    Thanks
    David

Does that box still Shows the Google text?
Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
Current Firefox versions use the default search engine (pref: browser.search.defaultenginename) to set the search engine that is used on the about:home page.
Check the <b>browser.search.defaultenginename</b> pref on the <b>about:config</b> page and make sure that it is set to the default value Google.
    *browser.search.defaultenginename
You can check if you still have the XML files of the default search engines including Google in the searchplugins folder in Firefox program folder.
If not then you need to reinstall Firefox.

  • Help with opening Adobe Reader and downloading updates

I can not open Adobe .pdf files any longer (this started yesterday, prior to that I could open adobe files).
When I double click a .pdf file I get this notice on my screen: Windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access file.
So I went to the Adobe download site to download a new copy of Adobe.  When I start the download I get this on the screen:  The instruction at "0x0e3a0068" referenced memory at "0x0e3a0068."  The memory could not be written.  Then two options are listed: click OK to terminate or cancel to debug.  So I click on cancel and I get this on my screen: Internet Explorer has closed this webpage to help protect your computer.   A malfunctioning or malicious addon has caused I.E. to close this webpage.
I don't have AVG running, I do have avast but I've disabled it.  I ran Registry Mechanic and an I.E. erasure program but nothing helps.
I have gone into I.E. and reduced the security level to its lowest state but no joy.
So, any ideas or suggestions on what's the problem and how to overcome it would be appreciated.  Thanks, in advance, for your reply.  Jim R.

Hi Mike..tried that as well but no joy.  A friend of mine was looking at it all and noticed that it was an I.E. thing as far as not letting me redownload the reader so I went to Mozilla Firefox and I could download a new version but....whenever I attempt to open a .pdf file I get that message, "Windows can not open the specified device, path or file. You man not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
Damn...this is irritating as I need to get to some of thos files as I need them for a Journal I'm working on as editor-in-chief.
It all worked just fine last Saturday but starting Monday when I was on my flight out to D.C.  no joy.
    Sigh...Jim R.

  • Adobe Reader will not open PDF in browser simple answer.

I just had this problem and was able to work through it with the help of tech support from TD Ameritrade.  The fix is simple so read on.  After uninstalling and reinstalling all things adobe and trying other recommendations on these forums I was stumped.  I called my broker tech section since I couldn't open their reports and we identified what my specific problem was.  For me, and I imagine some of you this will help and prevent a lot of wasted time.
Nothing was wrong with my Adobe Reader.  My problem was that I have a 64 bit operating system and both of my default browsers were 64 bit browsers.  I did not know my internet explorer default browser was the 64 bit one until the technician that assisted me informed me that a recent windows update made all 64 bit systems default to 64 bit internet explorer browsers.  You cannot change that default by choosing between 64 bit and 32 bit, because you can only choose internet explorer.  That explains why my attempts to open with a 32 bit browsers always failed.  I also tried with Firefox thinking it was 32 bit and it failed as well.  The technician informed me Firefox is a 64 bit browser and then it made sense.  I guess the recent Adobe reader update caused a change that no longer allowed my 64 bit system and 64 bit browser to open PDF's through the browser. The technician who assisted me has a 64 bit system and only uses 64 bit browsers and can still open PDF's through those browsers.  That confused us for a while until we realized he had his Adobe updater turned off and therefore had not been exposed yet to the update that originated my problems.
****ANSWER FOR MY PROBLEM*******The quick answer is use Google Chrome or some other 32 bit browser.  If you set a 32 bit browser as your default, the PDF's will open.  You cannot set Internet Explorer 32 bit browser as your default if you have a 64 bit system and also have 64 bit Internet Explorer.  The windows update prevents you from doing it.  At least that is my understanding.
The bottom line is I have the newest Adobe Reader on a 64 bit system and can open any web PDF with Google Chrome set as my default browser, because it is a 32 bit browser.  The new Adobe Reader will not open PDF's with a 64 bit browser in Vista.  A 64 bit system is fine as long as you use the 32 bit browser to open your PDF's in Vista.  I hope this helps some avoid some headaches.  I wish it had been posted when my problem first arose.
I think you can use a 64 bit browser in Windows 9 or later, but for Vista the above applies.

Yes I can create a short cut to internet exp. 32 bit on my desktop and I can even be using Internet expl. 32 bit, but when I try to open a PDF with adobe reader it won't work with internet exp. as my default browser b/c windows will always choose Internet exp. 64 bit which isn't supported yet by adobe reader.  With google chrome as my default browser windows can't choose an unsupported 64 bit browser in its place b/c google chrome doesn't have a 64 bit version.
My post was for those people who may not have realized yet that windows would not ever choose Internet expl. 32 bit over Internet expl. 64 bit if both exist on their system.  For them it is easiest to just choose a default browser that only has a 32 bit version.
If I understood your reply correctly, you were telling me how to create a shortcut to Internet exp. 32 bit on my desk top.  However, having that shortcut on my desk top and opening my browser through it will not prevent the problem of windows choosing my Internet exp. 64 bit browser for pdf's I try to open from the web.  Thank you for your response, but I think the problem that I have tried to explain does exist for many users and can only be fixed by using a 32 bit browser that is not Internet explorer as your default browser.  At some point if windows fixes the update that always chooses Internet expl. 64 bit over Internet expl. 32 bit, then this will all be irrelevant.
    Thanks

  • Adobe Reader does not recognize file name (filename10.5.11.pdf) but does in Adobe Standard 9.  Why?

I post documents to our Intranet site and found out recently that Adobe Reader does not recognize certain file names in PDF files.  For instance,  when trying to open a PDF file with the name
filename10.5.11.pdf  in Adobe Reader, the web browser will not open the PDF and the display is blank.   When I'm using another computer with Adobe Standard 9, I do not have a problem opening the file.
I would like to know if anyone else has had a similar issue and why Reader will not recognize the file name and Standard does.

The version is Adobe Reader 10.1.0    I will request the latest version
and let you know if that fixes the problem
Actually I had changed the name of the file so our associates could access
the file (changed the  .  to a hyphen)  It still made me wonder why Reader
wouldn't open it at that time.
Thanks again for you assistance and I will let you know if this resolves
    the  issue.

    Hi Susan,
    Thanks for providing the information.
Could you also let me know what is the exact version of Adobe Reader on
your system. You can check the same y clicking on Help > About Adobe
    Reader X.
In case its not 10.1.1, please try updating to the latest version and see
    if the problem persists.
Also, does any other PDF with a different filename open in Internet
    Explorer correctly?
    Thanks

  • When trying to open pdf from Inbox, it opens Adobe Reader X instead of my Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro?

It seems my Windows Vista pc did an update on Adobe.  Now when I open a pdf i receive via email, it automatically opens a
program called Adobe Reader X instead of my Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.  How do I force my system to open Pro instead of X?  I want to make edits and stuff to the pdfs, but X doesn't have the capabilities as Pro.  I'm thinking X is a Reader version?
Using Vista, i cannot find the option in Files to force all PDFs to be opened with Pro.
    Help!

This is from the Windows Vista help menu:
If you double-click a file in Windows and it opens in the wrong software program, follow these steps to choose the program you would prefer that file use. You can change this setting for an individual file, or you can tell Windows to open all files of that same type in the software program you choose.
Open the folder that contains the file you want to change.
Right-click the file that you want to change, and then, depending on the type of file, either click Open With or point to Open With and then click Choose Default Program.
Click the program that you want to use to open this file.
    Do one of the following:
If you want all files of that type to open in the same software program, select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
If you want only that file to open in the software program this one time, clear the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
