Adobe Reader XI protected mode problem

I downloaded Reader XI and went to open a pdf that previously worked with Reader.  But Adobe Reader XI won't open (says problem with "protected mode").  I can't open any pdf's either on my computer or on the internet at trusted sights.  Troubleshooting takes me to a page on fixes for Reader X. Not helpful!  Any ideas?  (I uninstalled and reinstalled and still won't work.)

CoUnyot,

Please Disable protected Mode .. Please find the below steps ":
Disable Protected Mode by going to Edit > Preferences > General and deselecting Enable Protected Mode at startup.

Adobe Reader XI Protected Mode is blocking a link in PDF. The link is to an internal document management system: HP TRIM.
If Protected Mode is disabled the link opens successfully.
If Protected Mode is enabled the link fails to open yet nothing is logged in AdbeReaderBroker.log to help identify what is being blocked.

Adobe Security Team provided a hotfix for this issue which will be included in the next quarterly release.
They also advised that the following registry value was required for the Trim:// url to function in Protected Mode:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\FeatureLockDown\cDefaultLaunchURLPerms]
    "tSchemePerms"=".....|trim:2"

  • Adobe Reader requiring Protected mode disabled

I know this is somehow a 3rd party related problem, however I would like to discuss why this is happening.
We upgraded our servers from 2008 R2 to 2012 and suddenly Adobe Reader started to get" There was an error opening this document. Access denied."  I wonder why this is happening. I found that edit >preferences > disable "Enable protected
mode at startup" would fix the problem.
I also wonder if this also is not related to Windows Server 2012 standard, but only happens when deduplication is enabled as all our data drives are deduplicated now (with great success).

Although this is probably an Adobe Reader issue, but same thing here: Adobe Reader 11.0.7 with same options enabled and now on Server 2012R2 RDS saying 'access denied' which only can be solved by disabeling 'Protected mode', what nobody actually wants.
    Any solutions available?

  • APSA11-01 - Reader X - Protected Mode unsupported Citrix and no release until June 2011

    HI,
how does you handle the support for Citrix on Terminalserver in such situation?
The overall pain is that Adobe release a Security advisories but will only deliver in June 2011 the update for Reader X.
    Official info:
Because Adobe Reader X Protected Mode would prevent an exploit of this kind from executing, we are currently planning to address this issue in Adobe Reader X for Windows with the next quarterly security update for Adobe Reader, currently scheduled for June 14, 2011
    http://blogs.adobe.com/psirt/2011/03/security-advisory-for-adobe-flash-player-adobe-reader -and-acrobat-apsa11-01.html
    http://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa11-01.html
The really bad strategy for Enterprise customers on Citrix is .. that it does mean we need to run supported but unsecure for more then 2 months for 5000 users. The problem is that Reader X is not supported on Citrix with protected mode. This is on page 64 on Enterprise Admin Guide:
When Adobe Reader is used with Protected Mode enabled (the default), Citrix is not supported.
Administrators should disable and lock Protected Mode.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83709/attachments/Acrobat_Enterprise_Administration.pdf
Why does Adobe not think and support their Enterprise customer deployments and think there is no need to deploy inline with the other updates e. g. 9.x???
This goes to the strategy to go away on Enterprise environments from Adobe as you can't argue to use it this way and be unsecure.

    Hi,
does anyone know, when Adobe is planning to support Citrix with Reader X Protoected Mode?

  • Protected Mode problem

When I click a pdf file to open I now (this is new) get the message "Do I want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?" Click yes and get a window saying "Adobe Reader cannot open in Protected Mode due a problem with your system configuration. Would you like to open Adobe Reader with protected Mode disabled?"
Why do I suddenly have to go through all these steps open a pdf document?
How do I go back to just double clicking and, voila, it's open.

Please don't post the same question multiple times!

  • Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close.

When reading PDF attachments, I get the following:  Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried to remove Adobe Reader via Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs but that won't work.  I get this:  This patch package could not be opened.  Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package. I don't know how to do what is being asked.  I have tried to download Adobe Reader again but get this when I do:  Note:  this application already installed.
I have Adobe Reader X (10.0.1) with an update installed on 2/19/2011.  I have Windows XP SP3.
Anyone who can help me get Adobe Reader working correctly again or uninstalling it so I can reinstall.
    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the input.  Did you remove Adobe Reader 10 first before you downloaded the older version?  If you removed it, how did you do that?  The add/remove programs in control panel won't let me remove it -- it says a patch package can't be opened.

  • Getting "adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close

On Windows XP service pack 3. Adobe Reader X
Get "Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close." . I have uninstalled adibe and reinstalled it and problem came back within 2 weeks after working for a short time.

    Try the following:
    Uninstall Adobe Reader X
    Reboot your computer
    Delete directory C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0
Download the EXE or the MSI installer from ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.1.0/ and execute e.g. either of the following files:
    AdbeRdr1010_en_US.exe
    AdbeRdr1010_en_US.msi
    Good luck!

  • Acrobat Reader X Protected mode and DDE

    Hi,
I have an acrobat reader plug-in that we communicate with using DDE commands (based loosly on the DDEserver sample from the SDK). However, it doesn't work in Acorbat Reader X Protected mode.
I've tried using the ProtectedModeWhitelistConfig.txt method but to no avail.
Did anyone encounter this issue with plug-ins that uses DDE? Can anyone point me to solution or alternative way?
    Thanks,
    Yoav

    Thanks for the reply.
IF the whitelist is indeed the correct way, i couldn't make it work with it. I must say that the documentation out there on the whitelist is far from being perfect. The closest thing I found was about namedpipes in the Broker log but nothing on DDE.
As for the license and developer support - The license was granted years ago and I'm not sure if developer support is still active for us. How do I check this?

  • Define adobe reader 11 protected view privileged locations via the registry

Is it possible to define adobe reader 11 protected view privileged locations via the registry?
I need to add the folder path our docuemnt managment system uses for its temp directory.
    Thanks

I modified the transform file I use to deploy reader via group policy with the adobe customization wizard and specified the desired privileged locations.
I then did a test deploy of reader to a workstation and adobe reader 11.0.02 was installed.  None of the privileged locations I defined in the transform are showing up as being defined in the GUI and they are not in the registry @ HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\TrustManager\cTrustedFolders I used filemon to figure out where reader was writing to in the registry.
I don’t know if there are issues with certain parts of the transform being ignored when installing the software. I have noticed that if I install adobe reader via the command line and apply the transform, the installer completely ignores the transform but gives no errors.

  • Reader 10.0.1 protected mode problems

I just upgraded from 10.0.0 to 10.0.1. (Windows 7 x64, SEP 11 RU6mp2 for antivirus) While reader 10.0.0 worked just fine, I cannot get 10.0.1 to open without disabling protected mode.  I have seen the same problem on another machine running Win2003 server r2 x64.

This appears to be caused by folder redirection/roaming profiles.  10.0.1
works if I log on locally.  Am I more secure using 10.0.0 with p
rotected mode or 10.0.1 without protected mode?

  • Cannot run reader in protected mode with MS Office 2010

I just set up 6 identical Dell Optiplex XE machines with Office Home and Business 2010 pre-loaded.  Reader 10.1.1 will run in protected mode if it is installed before I go through the Office 2010 activation/installation procedure.  On the 2 machines where Office was set up before installing Adobe reader, protected mode will not work.  If protected mode is not enabled, I cannot go into preferences - general and turn the protected mode log to try to debug this problem.  For now I an running those two machines with protected mode off.  Has anyone else seen this?

You should always use official documentation for support details but I am pretty sure Windows 7 support was not available for the EAS client until 11.1.1.3.

  • Adobe Reader 10 Web Application Problem

    Hello,
I am currently troubleshooting issues with Adobe Reader 10, while opening PDF files in a web application using IE, Acro32.exe opens in the background and does not open the page. Any attempt to end the process fails, if the user closes IE and attempts to reopen IE or Adobe Reader 10 application they will either freeze or start in the background and not open a window. The computer must be restarted in order to open these applications again.
    Troubleshooting steps:
Attempted to disable all of Adobe Reader 10's protected mode setting - no change
Attempted to disable "Display PDF in browser" - no change
Updated Reader to 10.1.2 - no change
Forced the frozen Acro32.exe to restart using Sysinternals Procexp and receive the following error "Faulting application acrord32.exe, version 10.1.2.45, faulting module acrord32.exe, version 10.1.2.45, fault address 0x0005640a." The application fails to stop and this error is generated by the new process spawned.
Once the client is rolled back to version 9 the issue is resolved.
The web application does not open inline windows in IE; it will open a new Reader window (in normal functionality).
    Any suggestions?

If you are in Windows, you can try using this tool to remove all traces of Reader:

  • How are permissions set for Reader XI Protected Mode?

    Hi, all,
I've just installed Reader XI, and I immediately ran into an issue with Protected Mode "protecting" me from my workflow.  I'm trying to access a .kml file on my desktop to import some annotations into a Reader Enabled PDF file.  When I get the popup window saying that I don't have permissions to open this file, I head for the Reader security settings.  Adobe kindly provided us with a UI to select files, folders, and hosts to treat as priviledged.  I enter my desktop folder's path using the UI, and save.  I restart Reader, expecting this setting to help.  In fact, the security UI reports that  my desktop folder is priviledged, which is good.  The operation still fails, with the exact same error message.  Is this the anticipated behavior, and if so, what is the privileged file, folder, and host for?  I can't read or write files to my priviledged locations.  Is this correct?
    Thanks
    Joe White

Does it work if you change the file extension to .xml from .kml?

  • Adobe Reader XI fullscreen mode now leaves title bar on Mac

Has anyone run into this problem? I just upgraded Adobe Reader X (for the Mac) to Reader XI. When I go into fullscreen mode or open a fullscreen document, a title bar is left at the top with the document title and the upper left buttons. This did not happen in versions IX or X; kinda defeats the purpose of the fullscreen mode for presentations. Is this a bug? Or a new "feature"? I'm still running Snow Leopard and haven't tried in 10.7 or 10.8.

I am having the very same problem!
Snow Leopard and the annoying title bar when in fullscreen.
Notice that it also shows the resize "handle" in the bottom right corner, which you can click and drag to resize the window.
So it actually is NOT a fullscreen view anymore.
I guess this has to do with Lion's OS fullscreen mode, but Adobe please correct this!!!
ADOBE, ARE YOU READING THIS? This title bar is an ISSUE!
