Adobe recommends: New CSS features in Dreamweaver CS5

Over  the next week, we are going to be publicizing some high-value content from adobe.com and other community sites. We have been tracking what's    been most important to our users, and feel that getting this content out to the larger community will go a long way toward helping people tackle some of their most pressing challenges.
Continuing our trip along the CSS highway, our next recommendation is a video by Dremeaver superstar Brian Wood:
New CSS features in Dreamweaver CS5
The video demonstrates some of the most exciting new CSS features in Dreamweaver: new CSS layouts, CSS inspect, and CSS enable/disable.
Give it a spin and let us know what you think!

Thanks for the answer this is very useful however I still find that Dreamwever defaults back to writing in CSS, I have to go to the manel every time and switch from CSS style to Inline style which is very irritating. Is there any way to disable writing in CSS all together like their used to be in CS3..in the preferences.
Much appreciated

  • Adobe constantly pinging firewall after installing Dreamweaver CS5 Demo

    I don't know for sure if this should be posted under Dreamweaver or just Adobe in general, but since I installed the Dreamweaver CS5 demo 2 days ago, July 15, 2010, my firewall has been filling up with icmp/ping requests from "ADOBE Systems Incorporated" (see log snippet below. Times are CST -6:00). This is happening whether I have Dreamweaver running or not. I noticed because I usually only get a daily email from my firewall, but lately I have been receiving multiple emails daily filled with blocked ping requests.
    Can anyone confirm if this might be a "feature" of all their new online stuff or should I be worried? Can anyone else check their firewalls and see if it's happening to them?
    Thanx in advance,
    Mike

    Dreamweaver automatically tries to connect to Adobe every time the Welcome screen is displayed. To prevent it from happening, select the "Don't show again" checkbox at the bottom left of the welcome screen. The reason it connects is to get the message that's displayed at the bottom right of the welcome screen.
    The other reason your computer will be connecting to Adobe is the Adobe Updater will be trying to connect to the server to find if there are any updates to the installed programs. It normally runs once a day, but is probably retrying because your firewall won't let it through. I'm not sure if or how you can disable the updater. I find it quite useful, so have never tried to turn it off.

  • CSS Menu Maker Dreamweaver CS5

    Hi folks,
    Newb to Dreamweaver CS5 & CSS (yay!) I've read the online tutorials and quite frankly, I'm about ready to smash my head against my desk. This is very confusing. I haven't made any progress with my web site....unless staring at a white screen mocking me is progress.
    I got some good feedback from a few users in my first post (this is my 2nd post)  for which I'm very greatful btw and figured out that frames aren't the way to go. CSS confused the heck out of me, so I did some research and stumbled upon a website : http://www.cssmenumaker.com
    I was able to create & download a horizontal CSS menu that looks very appealing. Problem is, I can't seem to get it to work using Dreamweaver CS5. Perhaps somebody can help me. (God how I hope somebody can help me!)
    For starters, I've created a "site" in Dreamweaver CS5. The site in Dreamweaver CS5 connects successfully to my hosting server. The directory structure on my hard drive that holds my files is :
    C:\HTML
    C:\HTML\images (where I keep any images used for my site)
    C:\HTML\menu (this was produced by the CSS menumaker website - has a CSS file in it & an "images" subdirectory within)
    Below are the instructions that were included when I unzipped the cssmenumaker's zip file :
    INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
    1) Upload the "Menu" folder to the root directory of your  website.
    2) Copy and paste the code below to the desired spot in your site.
    <head>
         <link rel="stylesheet" href="/menu/menu_style.css"  type="text/css" />
    </head>
    <div class="menu bubplastic horizontal aqua">
         <ul>
             <li class="highlight"><span class="menu_r"><a  href="index.html" target="_self"><span  class="menu_ar">Home</span></a></span></li>
             <li><span class="menu_r"><a  href="products-services" target="_self"><span  class="menu_ar">Products/Services</span></a></span></li>
             <li><span class="menu_r"><a href="faq"  target="_self"><span  class="menu_ar">FAQs</span></a></span></li>
             <li><span class="menu_r"><a href="contactus"  target="_self"><span class="menu_ar">Contact  Us</span></a></span></li>
         </ul>
         <br class="clearit" />
    </div>
    NOTE:
    1) Open the "sample.html" to view a sample of your menu.DO NOT use this code in your site.
    2) If you run into a problem getting your menu to work or have  suggestions for the site please Contact Us and  let us know. We will try to help as much as possible.
    Can somebody walk me through this step by step? I thought it was fairly simple but obviously I'm doing something wrong.

    John,
    As I mentioned in my first post I've been through the tutorials already. I just can't seem to get this to work. Working off what I told you in my first post, assume you're working with a blank index.html and you enter in the CSS Menu Maker's code to the blank html file.
    The HTML code should look like this, should it not ?  :
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <!--
    Generated via www.cssmenubuilder.com, visit us to get a super cool menu for your site
    -->
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <title>Untitled</title>
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="/menu/menu_style.css" type="text/css" />
    </head>
    <div class="menu bubplastic horizontal aqua">
        <ul>
            <li class="highlight"><span class="menu_r"><a href="index.html" target="_self"><span class="menu_ar">Home</span></a></span></li>
            <li><span class="menu_r"><a href="products-services" target="_self"><span class="menu_ar">Products/Services</span></a></span></li>
            <li><span class="menu_r"><a href="faq" target="_self"><span class="menu_ar">FAQs</span></a></span></li>
            <li><span class="menu_r"><a href="contactus" target="_self"><span class="menu_ar">Contact Us</span></a></span></li>
        </ul>
        <br class="clearit" />
    </div>
    <body>
    </body>
    </html>

    Hi,
    Some Spry files have been updated with a couple of bug fixes, there are no new features or version updates.
    But the Spry team is working hard on 1.7, that should hopefully be coming any time soon.

    Very disappointing indeed.
    Spry is gathering quite a large following with everybody getting in on the act. The latest one, to my knowledge, from DWCourse!com offering the Ten Commandments for Editing Spry Menu Bars found here http://dwcourse.com/dreamweaver/ten-commandments-spry-menubars.php#comment-1124
    With such an active Spry framework following and the fact that Spry is delivered as part of the expensive DW package, Adobe is not doing itself any favours by ignoring the development process required to satisfy its users.
    There are many people that are willing to help deliver a better product. Adobe really needs to look at its strategies carefully if it wants to keep the wrath of the community at bay.
    This is my two bobs worth for the moment.
    Ben
    Hello Ben,
    There are some other features underway which most of you will find interesting. At this point I can not say anything about them as i'm tied to a NDA agreement . Once the NDA is lifted you will know what we have been hiding .
    But I indeed would love to see a "open" development process with public bug tracking and community patches. But it would be hard to keep it up to the current layed out standards.. Spry is really well tested by Spry team.. While other librarys struggle with tons of bugs in selector engines.. Spry's engine just works im amazed by the amount of bugs i have found since Spry 1.6.1. I can count them on my hands..  And these aren't even significant "bugs".

    Sorry, Al, but I couldn't disagree more.  Where I respect the fact that, as coders, we're rather ingrained with our workflow processes and, at times, hesitant to change, I've found LESS' benefits to be very worthwhile.
    No need to apologize. Preprocessing is a topic on which there are differing opinions. You have one. I have one. There are advocates:
    http://blog.urbaninsight.com/2012/04/12/ten-reasons-you-should-be-using-css-preprocessor
    There are those who are not sold:
    http://blog.millermedeiros.com/the-problem-with-css-pre-processors/

    There are those mostly sold:

    There are even those who have been converted (but who might reverse at some later point):

    Heck, even I might be converted someday - or not
    Bottom line for me, right now? I know I can write CSS that is better than most, more efficient than most, and easier to follow than most, and a preprocessor would add unwanted complexity. But that's for me. For someone not able to be organized intutively, or for a large - but carefully coordinated - team, a preprocessor could be a positive.
    But not for me.
    There are evolving trends - popular aspects of the technology that may and should find themselves being adapted into CSS. But I've been around this business as long as CSS has. I've seen buzzwords and trends and I've historically been spot-on in predicting the one that will stick. I think preprocessing will stick - but only insofar as it will be a catalyst for features in future versions of CSS. As a separate technology it makes no sense - to me

    I tried it with a simple pre-built template, and didn't have any effect - you mentioned in the video you were going to assign each to some pre-built corresponding css files... did they already have additional attributes in them not highlighted in the video? I can't seem to get my layout to change in the mobile and tablet sizes...?

    Learn how easy it is to create PHP code by using some of the new code-hinting features in Dreamweaver CS5
    http://adobe.ly/wjmnc1

    I've been using Dreamweaver to create php based websites with the popular Zend Framework 1.  I'm now trying to integrate Dreamweaver with ZF2 and the Dreamweaver is giving me errors for lies such as:
    $loader = new Zend\Loader\StandardAutoloader(array('autoregister_zf' => true));
    and
    use Zend\Session\Container;
    even though the lines are correct.  Do I have to do anything special in Dreamweaver so that it recognizes these statements as not being errors?

  • Can I transfer my web pages from Adobe CS2 golive to Dreamweaver CS5?

    I work for a nonprofit organization and we are going to be upgrading from our current website design Adobe Golive CS2 to hopefully a Dreamweaver CS5 and I would like to know if it is at all possible to transfer all our websites pages from golive to dreamweaver cs5 without having to start all over from the beginning? Please help me!!! Thanks

    I am currently doing the same thing after holding off for 4 years. This is what I have found out the hard way:
    Strip out as much GL stuff as possible, especially GL "Actions" BEFORE you migrate as they will be flatten on your page making it a mess to dicipher later. Better to just add the equivalent DW "Behavior" manually, you will be glad you did as it will leave you with simpler streamlined pages that are easier to understand and also easier for Google to search. And you will also learn DW.
    If you are using a template(s) I would seriously suggest that you scrap your GL templates and make new DW templates and apply them to each page over again.
    This is the ugly reason that I found out last night. If you ever change  your GL created template while in DW (for example to add the location of the SpryAssets) then along with the desired change you will also have the unpleasant experience of all your page titles being changed to the name of the GL created Template page. This will happen even if you make the title tag editable DW style. However any pages retitled  AFTER you make  <title> editable will NOT be altered if you change the GL created template. This I found out the hard way.
    So since I was planning to make a DW template and apply it to all pages on the site anyway I have decided to do the following. Detach all the pages from the GL created template. Make whatever changes I want to individual pages. Then make the DW template and apply it to all pages. My hope is that it will preserve the page <title> and save me some work. I have not tried this so I don't know if it will work or not, but in theory it should.
    If you use components then make a "Library" folder in the site root folder and move all your components there and change the extension to ".lbi"; the reason I did this is because while the GL2DW migration moved my templates to the root and renamed them accordingly, it didn't do the same for components.
    If you use MenuMachine then I would also suggest that you strip it out. I tried keeping it but regreted it and so went back stripped it out and migrated again. All in all I have already migrated the same site about 7 times and will have to do it agian to take out some GL Actions that I missed before. So don't delete you GL site till you have your DW site going like you want because you may have to make several migration attempts before you get it right.
    If you have more questions then you can ask here because several of us are going through this process.

  • Dreamweaver CS5 11.0.3 Updater AFTER 11.0.4 ?

    Hello Folks,
    There was an updater yesterday for Dreamweaver CS5 11.0.4 which updated fine on my computer.
    However, today, the Adobe Application Manager wants to install Dreamweaver CS5 11.0.3.  That's an older version.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?
    I am on a Mac Pro computer running OSX 10.6.7.
    p.s. "As a test, I tried running the 11.03 updater that the Adobe Application Manager recommends, but I get an error and it won't install"

    Hi folks,
    Sorry for any frustration this has caused you all.
    I want to clarify that I was not intending to blame this issue on your computers, or on you folks directly. As I stated, I simply was not seeing the same issue.
    We now believe that the issue is with files created by Adobe software on your computer. These are the Adobe updater preference files (AAMUpdater folder) that others have mentioned deleting to resolve the issue.
    It is so far unclear what might have caused this glitch/corruption in the preference files, but it has not affected most users.
    The solution that sammorris81 mentioned, with instructions for both Mac OS and Windows, has now been documented here:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/902/cpsid_90241.html
    If anyone that is experiencing this problem is willing to send their AAMUpdater folder for examination, please send me a PM. (It does not contain any personally-identifying information.) We would greatly appreciate it, since it will help to avoid such issues in the future.
    If resetting the update preferences does not resolve the issue, or you have any questions, reply here or send me a PM. I would like to help you get this sorted.
