Adobe's AME better than Apple's Compressor

If you're coming over from Final Cut Pro 7 and Compressor, you'll be happy to know that Adobe Media Encoder is much easier to use than Compressor, encodes faster, and produces much higher quality output.

  • Thank you Adobe for being better than useless at solving my SD 16:9 PAR Problem

I have read everything on these forums about the new PAR for SD 16:9 which is now 1050 x 576.  I have finally got a project for broadcast on SKY and guess what I can't even get a video cleared on Clearcast because it won't accept the new PAR, their server throws up an inccorect PAR error saying my video is 1:1.85 which is incorrect for their purposes.  I explained the logic to various technical guys there and they understand but don't care, they want an anamorphic SD 16:9 video that scales to 1024 x 576.  I've tried everything and have had to resort to either sending it to a post production facility and being charged not only for the rough cuts I send to Clearcast but also the final versions to Adcast for final approval for SKY or buying Sorenson Squeeze.  Premiere is useless for both purposes because they are sticking to 1050 x 576 PAR for SD 16:9. Before you try to explain that this is correct, I already know, but that isn't helping solve my problem.  This is SKY we are talking about, one of the major broadcasters and Premiere has failed to deliver.  This is going to cost me £300 - 500 to sort out.  I've used Premiere for must be getting on for 10 years, people have been complaining about this problem for ages and there are work arounds but none of them solve the final export PAR.  If I buy Sorenson, I think I might go to FCP or Avid for the first time in 10 years of editing; I finally get a broadcast job and Premiere fails me, thanks a bunch Adobe, all you have to do is offer the ability to do this whether it is right or wrong and you can't deliver on it, just take a look at your forums and you will see that this is a recurring problem, why the hell haven't you sorted it out.
If I have to pay £500 plus for Sorenson just to encode SD video I'm damn sure I'm not going to upgrade to CC on principle, time to jump ship I think, Adobe have obviously reached that size that all companies reach where they no longer care about the small guy trying to do his job.

Before you try to explain that this is correct
I'm not sure it is correct.  On the NTSC side, it's definitely not correct.  Adobe switched to the PAR used by the BBC, but those values were designed for use with the 702 pixel Clean Aperture.  That's fine with analog material, but it actually works out to be incorrect for digital signals using the full 720 raster.  This is why we get very small black bars on the sides when downscaling HD to SD, even though the SAR is identical for both.
Rather than use the correct values, Adobe switched to the incorrect values used by much of the world.
Except SKY, it would seem.  But that does mean you will have to follow the instructions provided by both Jeff and Mark in the original thread.

  • Anything better than apple?

    Hi,
After finding my bedroom Pansonic TX-26LXD60 incompatible with my MacBook Pro - the outsides of the outputted screen can't be seen (toolbar and dock etc.) and seeing that I won't be able to use the 46" Bravia sitting downstairs much because it is the main tv for the household and my parents won't like me, certainly as a long term solution, using it, I'm looking for a monitor to use with my new computer.
I have a PS3 which functions as my TV when needed but it obviously has to output to something.
I would like the Apple 24" to be honest, but are there any adaptors to change that mini-displayport to HDMI?
I like the USB ports on the back and the capability to charge my MacBook Pro, they are huge benefits.
If not, what would you recommend for a 24"-26" monitor (resolution needs to be 1920x1200 or greater) within the price range of the Apple?
    Thanks all,
    Fred

You can use the mini to stream stuff.  Buying the Apple TV would be mostly redundant if you already need to buy the mini for regular computer use.

    No.

  • Is there other adobe apps that are available for tablets other than apple?

I see that there are several apps that are available for apple users. And I didnt know that photoshop was available to other devices until now. Either i am blind or it isnt as advertised.
Is photoshop the only app available to other devices other than apple?
Also, are these apps available to those who have the creative cloud subscription? or do you have to buy the mobile apps?

Adobe apps on Android. Apps like Ideas and Kuler used to be there but not sure why they were eventually pulled. Not enough interest, maybe? (I believe Kuler eventually went free for iOS.)
You have to buy the apps outright since those are closed electronic marketplaces that have no mechanism to connect to another marketplace (like Creative Cloud). The consolation is that if you stop subscribing to Creative Cloud, you'll keep any apps you've bought.

  • Does FCP perform better than adobe premiere elements on a MacBook Pro?

does FCP perform better than adobe premiere elements on a MacBook Pro?
    Background:
    * just trying to decide what to go for re video editing app with more features than iMovie
    * last time I'd tried Adobe Premiere Elements on my MacBook (but it was before I had an SSD) the performance was not good - it was sluggish to the point I really didn't want to use it
    * so this question is just about whether in general FCP X performs better on a Mac (you'd think it would no, as it's made/optimized for a Mac)
    My MacBook:
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Elements is essentially an amateur app and Premiere a professional one similar to the discontinued Final Cut Pro 7.
FCP X is a radical new approach to editing which like Marmite, you either love or hate.
It is probably between the 2 in capabitlity but much closer to Premiere.
Some might say it was better than Premiere, whilst other long standing broadcast editors would disagree.
It all depends on your standpoint and I am trying to give an unbiased appraisal.
Some of the techniques it uses are way ahead of all other apps and this is what worries people who have an established way of working, though as I mentioned in another post, there are a few omissions which have upset those editors.
Some might say (echoes of Jeremy Clarkson) that FCP X is the most advanced editing app on the planet albeit with a few teething troubles.

  • HT1771 why did apple erase ichat? its so much better than messages and now I cant video chat with my ichat buddies

why did apple erase ichat? its so much better than messages and now I cant video chat with my ichat buddies!!!

    HI,
    Apple did not erase iChat.
Messages in Mountain Lion is iChat +
The plus bit is the fact you can iMessage iOS devices.
All the other features that were in iChat are still there.
If you upgraded Lion to get to Mountain Lion then in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars you probably list all the iChat Accounts (Screen Names and IDs).
You may need to enable them for Messages.
They should also show up in Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts
Once those accounts (AIM and Jabber) are Enabled they can be viewed in a Combined Buddy List
Windows Menu > Buddies (Or using CMD + 1 Keystrokes)
In the General Section of the Preferences you can Unlink these Buddy lists.
The Green icons or highlight a Buddy and then using the Buddies Menu or the icons at the Bottom of the Buddy list can be used the same way to start Video or Audio Only chats.
The iMessage "Account" is only for texting iOS devices or other people using their Apple ID on a Mac in Messages.
It is an account "in addition to" rather than "taking over from" the services that iChat can join.

  • Apple TV - any better than an ipod?

Before I went and got an apple tv I decided to hook up my ipod video to the tv and see what the quality was like. So I ran svideo from a dock into my 32" sony lcd. It actually looked rather good for standard def programs (ie all itunes material). The Daily Show looked just fine and even The Office and The Riches playing letterboxed widescreen looked fine even when I zoomed the letterbox full screen with the tv.
I'm sticking with the ipod for now. Wondering if someone with the apple tv would like to try a comparison.

Wondering if someone with the apple tv would like to try a comparison.I find that the same file played from TV looks visibly better than when played directly from the iPod. HDTV scalers vary so results may vary with the quality of your particular HDTV/EDTV model. However, it would seem the TV is specifically enhanced for playback of such files and, in general, does a better than average job of scaling here.

  • IDVD appears to produce better "hi-def to DVD" than DVDSP and Compressor.

For the last 4 years I have used DVDSP and Compressor to burn DVDs from my HDV and AVCHD/ProRes 422 projects but have always been plagued by the well known less than perfect results.
For some reason creating DVDs from HD material results in slightly lower quality than when using standard def media.
Artefacts such as double-lining and aliasing have been discussed at length in the forums and weird and wonderful time-consuming solutions such as the Bonsai technique have been proposed.
Recently I had reason to go back to iDVD and to my surprise the video quality appeared to be better than DVDSP's.
Gone were the minor but  irritating artefacts I had become accustomed to.
Instead I now get sharp smooth images.
It's still early days and I don't know whether the results are due to the idiosyncracies of my editing/burning setup. The DVDs were played in both a Panasonic BD player together with a Panasonic DVD player and viewed on a Sony 40" HDTV connected with HDMI cables.
Maybe if anybody has a few spare moments between projects they could test it out.
Note that I have only tested this with iDVDs "Best Performance" setting which is suitable for DVDs up to 65 minutes long.

    Ian,
I'm not sure you need another voice in this conversation…but here's my 2 cents.
While I agree that iDVD can do a very good job of encoding HD to DVD specs, I can't think of any reason why it should be superior to Compressor. In fact, my experience has been the opposite; I get somewhat better (cleaner) results using Compressor and DVDSP. The principal reason is I can start with my saved presets and then  – like Michael mentioned…take a small test section and make adjustments if I see something that I don't like.
As for scaling, I do it first, then I make the MPEG as a separate step, (There was a recent thread about this questioning whether this added any value. No mater; it's the way I do it unless I don't have time.)
    Good luck.

From your point of view and the framing of your question, Apple does indeed support WIndows better than Mac for the limited issue of iCloud.
    chewy cabeza wrote:
...YET, Leopard and Snow Leopard are NOT iCloud compatible. How can that be justified? Obviously, Apple can make iCloud available to Snow Leopard, but disdains us...
Historically speaking, Apple has rarely gone backwards in its OS development.  Once they have released a new OS with new technology, I can only think of one example of when they backtracked:  They released TrueType technology in System 7 and then released System 6.0.8, which included TrueType technology for continuing System 6 users.
So it is part of their culture to move forward and not backwards.  Other examples:
    •  Inclusion of the then novel SONY 3.5" disk drive in its release of the first Macintosh (and not the industry standard 5.25" drive); after its use in the Lisa and adoption for the Apple II series of computers.
    •  Elimination of the floppy drive completely in the release of the first iMac.
    •  Use of then novel AAC audio compression as "state of the art" compression for the iPod release in 2001 instead of the outdated mp3 standard.
    •  Refusal to allow use of FLASH in iPod Touch/iPhone/iPads.
How could they justify these decisions?  The marketplace justified them for Apple!
So, yes, they could release 10.6.9 with iCloud support.  But why now, if not then?

  • Is the apple laptop with 4gb ram and i5 better than other laptop with 6gb ram and i5

is the apple laptop with 4gb ram and i5 better than other laptop with 6gb ram and i5

Well it depends on the age.     http://www.everymac.com/ should help you identify the age of the two models.
Apple may use two processors called i5, but newer models have different optimizations than older models.
The processor is usually not the main affect on speed.  RAM helps, but barely unless everything is on an SSD already.   Hard drive speed is usually the limiting factor of speed on computers.   eSATA hard drives with higher RPM can often yield the fastest results because notebook hard drives tend to be slower that are not SSD, but for those you need either Express/34 or Thunderbolt based adapters.

  • Are Apple routers better than others?

I have wi-fi at my home and I have problems with AirPlay as it sometimes skips.
I'm thinking of buying Time Capsule and I want to know if it's powerfull enough to work in a normal size house and will it solve AirPlay problem?
Is wi-fi on Time Capsule better than on Motorola VIP1003 router?

The broadcast power of all routers is limited by law. Every manufacturer is running their products at 100%, so there will be very little difference between routers of different manufacturers.
If you have having difficulty now, replacing your router with a Time Capsule will likely not solve your problems.
Instead, you will probably need to look for "extending" or "repeating" devices to provide a stronger signal throughout your house....whether you elect to add the Time Capsule or not.

  • Open DNS better than Comcast xfinity DNS?

Is OpenDNS better than using Comcast/xfinity's DNS? If yes, how do I switch over?
I go to into Airport Utility and enter in the 2 openDNS numbers, something like 222 and 220, but at the bottom of the page right now (because I am using Comcast's DNS) there's a web address something.comcast.net  Do I need to change that info too? If so, what do I put in that field?
    Thanks!

    How did you add them?
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
(An explanation of why using Open DNS is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
