Adobe's Black Monday promotion

I have been notified of the following -
...from now until Nov 30, people who use the coupon code SAVE50 at checkout at the Adobe.com store will get an instant savings of $50 if they spend more than $500 on Adobe products (any of them, upgrades included).
Just thought it might be of interest here....

Why do we call it this?  I'm not sure....
Black Friday (the first big Christmas season shopping day following Thanksgiving Day) signifies the event that typically brings cash poor retailers back from the "Red" (negative cash-flow) into the "Black" (positive cash-flow).  On the west coast, many retailers cashed in early by opening their doors on Thanksgiving Day holiday instead of waiting until Friday.
Cyber Monday usually denotes the start of on-line shopping season.  Although it could be argued that anything that helps bring retailers back from the brink of year-long losses is probably a "Black" something.

  • Adobe 9 Black on White Document Scans to PDF Invert Black to White and vice versa! Not Good!

I have the same problem as TexasLawyer (Jul 30 2009) whose question was not answered nor was there any answer to a commenter who said he has the same problem ("I have an old HP LaserJet 3330 multifunction printer, and prefer scanning documents out of Adobe Acrobat rather than the software that came with the scanner.  However, after upgrading to Acrobat 9 Professional, the scans result in negative images.  I tried using the option in Acrobat to create negative images, hoping that that would result in a positive, but it didn't work. I'm using Windows XP, also.")
Me too. Except I am running XP as a virtual machine in a MAC (Snow Leopard). I "upgraded" to Acrobat 9 from a functioning Acrobat  6 (worked fine with my setup to make correct B&W pdf's from scanned B&W documents on the HP 3330 before I installed Adobe 9--I got updates immediately and am at version 9.1.3) butthe  Acrobat 9.1.3 scans on the HP 3300 invert white to black and black to white. The printer option box to invert black and white images was unchecked.  I checked it and ran the scan again but same result--white of paper document is black in pdf and black is white in pdf. I can scan the B on W document using grayscale and get B on W but the file is too large and unacceptable due to smudges picked up with gray scale.
Can't understand how so basic a use of Adobe is this messed up.This has to be a common problem since many many users scan black on white documents to pdf. Does anyone have a solution to this? It is critical in my profession.
Thanks in advance to you problem solvers out there that can solve this for me and hte others in my boat who search these forums looking for the answer to this issue.

I have an HP6010 scanner (sheet feed) that is used to scan multiple page documents. If I use the WIA scanner option I cannot select page size and the scanner defaults to legal size. On the other hand if I use the Twain driver I get negative images on my scans. I just installed Acrobat X Pro and the same thing is happening. I was using Acrobat 9. In fact in duplex mode the scanner outputs a negative image every other page, and a standard image on the alternate pages. Either way I am frustrated. I can't remember when the problem began, but I believe I was running XP SP2 and Acrobat 7 or 8.
Ironically, if I push the scan to PDF button on the scanner, which uses an HP utility, it comes out fine. All pages are in positive mode.
I did try scanning in color even though the document is black and white. I believe that the scan was fine. No negative images, but scanning in color is like watching the sun go down.
I thought it was Vista and System 7, then I was told that it had to be a scanner issue and that I needed to talk to HP. However, if the scanner functions properly on its own, with the HP utilities, then it has to be Acrobat.

  • Adobe CMM Black Point Compensation

    Hello list members,
I have been trying out the Adobe CMM in combination with Adobe Photoshop.
By testing the Black Point Compensation (BPC) preferences, I get strange
results on my PowerMac. This is not happening on an IntelMac for me.
The discussion started on the ColorSync users group and is still going on there,
so maybe others might report there too.
This is my testing basis (All done with ISOcoated to ISOuncoated, relative colorimetric):
(Abbr. Adobe Photoshop Convert to Profile BPC Setting: PS)
(Abbr. Adobe CMM preferences BPC setting: CMM)
    PS CMM Expected Happening
On On BPC taking place OK
On Off BPC taking place NOT Ok, no BPC happening
Off On BPC taking place OK
    Off Off NO BPC OK
    Any feedbacks are welcomed.
    Regards
    Rolf Gierling

In rare cases using Black Point Compensation can cause unacceptable results and the effect is usually washed out detail in the very dark regions of the final image. In our experience this problem usually rears its ugly head with some RGB output profiles.
Adobe recommends, and we agree, that in almost all cases, Black Point Compensation should be on when dealing with CMYK files (doing
RGB to CMYK conversions or CMYK to CMYK conversions). In most cases, doing RGB to RGB conversions without Black Point Compensation will produce desirable prints. However, depending on the profile, doing a conversion from RGB to RGB with Black Point Compensation can produce
poor output with washed out blacks.
It appears that this problem with some RGB profiles is dependent
on the software that is used to generate the profile. Apparently there is a Black Tag feature in ICC profiles that in some cases can be used or unused depending on the software that actually creates the profile. For this reason, there is no hard and fast rule that says we should or should not use Black Point Compensation with RGB output. Our recommendation is to turn off Black Point Compensation with RGB output profiles or if possible, try a test with Black Point Compensation
    on and off.
There is one other case where you may want to turn off Black Point Compensation. When you want to soft proof output for a printer that has a low dynamic range like newspaper, where the blacks are
usually not very dense. By turning off the Black Point Compensation, the soft proof is more accurate in predicating the effect of this low dynamic range. Black Point Compensation should be turned off
in the CMYK Set-Up. You can view full information for this problem source www.digitaldog.net/files/Black_Point_Compensation.pdf

  • Reporting: Adobe Air - Black Screen Bug Spotted

Basically, my latest android app got rejected during a certification process due to a black screen popping up after triggering the alarm.
This is my error report that I received from the store:
    Black screen appears after alarm
    <Procedure>
    1. Launch application
    2. 'Start' > Play game > Alarm show up > End alarm > Check
    <Expected Result>
    Black screen should not appear
So all you have to do is create a new android project in air with nothing but a white background, set the orientation to horizontal, check the full screen option, export and install the app, run the app, minimize the app and open the clock app and set an alarm, go back to the app, wait for the alarm, then cancel the alarm once it pops up, and what you get is a black screen.
Interestinly enough, the background music plays in the background, admob ads work as well, only the screen goes black, but once we minimize the app and then go back to it again, everything's fine. Moreover, when the app is in a vertical mode, the black screen doesn't appear.
Additional info: Apps developed in Flash Professional with the use of Air 4.0. Tested on android 4.3 & 4.4.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to upload android air apps until the problem gets fixed .

It may well only be GPU mode that shows the problem, though I could imagine Stage3D in Direct mode would do the same. The general case is that when the AIR app goes into the background and then comes back, the GPU textures may have been wiped out by the system. If you do really go to the background, as would be the case when an alarm dialog appears, you'll get the deactivate event that you can use to know that it has happened, and you can set the stage quality on the activate event.
In the case of the ads it may not count as being a full deactivate, but there is bound to be an event from the ad ANE. Look in its documentation for what evens happen when the ad is closed, and apply the stage quality work around to that event.
There is a chance that you won't have got the deactivate event, to set the quality to something different, and then when the activate event tries to change the quality nothing happens. At least I'm thinking that may be the case. You could work around that by testing if the quality is the one you want, then go away from that and back again to force a reload. For example, if you want the quality to be "medium" while the app is running, you could do this in the activate event, to make sure that it went away from medium:
    if(stage.quality == "medium")  stage.quality = "low";
    stage.quality = "medium";

Are you using Adobe Reader? If so, what version? What OS are you using? Do you get the black screen when you open the application from the start menu or from the Applications folder? Or does it happen with you double-click on a pdf file? Or while trying to use the Reader plug-in and viewing the pdf from within a web browser? With more information we can give you more help.

  • Problems with Adobe Reader and Flash Player

I had an Adobe update last Monday and, ever since then, I can't view documents (eg credit card statements) on screen and sites that I previously visited regularly without problem suddenly say that I need to have Adobe Flash Player installed. I've downloaded Adobe Flash Player and it says it's installed correctly but when I return to the site, it still says I need Adobe Flash Player. I've also tried doing an uninstall first and then an instal but the same thing happens. I've run disk first aid and it found a problem with the Head which it fixed but I still can't open documents using Adobe in Safari. Adobe Plug ins tells me that the Internet Access plug in is not loaded but when I ran 'repair Adobe Reader installation", it said there were no missing components detected and repair was not needed. I don't know if it's relevant but I've been having problems with Safari for several weeks, quitting 3 or 4 times a day, mainly when I'm switching from Safari to another programme such as Entourage or Excel.

    Hi Carolyn
I don't think I made it clear on the original post that I'm having problems with both Adobe Reader AND Adobe Flash Player. Unfortunately, all the Adobe Reader sites are confidential so I can't give you an illustration on that but for the Adobe Flash Player, try www.jacquielawson.com/ - you can preview cards without being signed in. With the Adobe Reader problems, I get a picture of a blank 'piece of paper' with a small blue square in the top right hand corner that has a white question mark inside it. The first time this happened to me, I was on the UK Inland Revenue site trying to print out some end of year forms. I phoned the Revenue's helpline and they said to try doing a 'save as' to my desktop. It seemed bizarre - saving a blank piece of paper - but lo and behold, when I opened it on my desktop, the forms appeared exactly as normal. However, I've since tried this 'save as' technique with my credit card statement and I still get a blank piece of paper with a blue square and white question mark when I open the desktop copy.
Thanks for your help and patience. I really appreciate it.

  • Adobe help stinks - Any good third party manuals?

I've just purchased CS6 Extended, and I see that the only help I can get is online help, rather than a good, searchable help file, as in earlier versions. It seems they feel they can eliminate the pay checks of technical writers by having their developers put on videos, in which they natter along with zero teaching skills, seemingly more interested in showing off their latest enhancements, than actually having to explain HOW they work. There was just ONE guy (I can't remember his name) of all the videos I've gone through, who actually presented his subject in a logical, thoughtful way, and the manner in which he spoke seemed to indicate that he had actually had some teaching experience.
I think Photoshop is a wonderful program, and CS6 64 bit is fantastic, but good luck trying to learn anything quickly with the current lame help system that is so obviously more interested in trying to push cloud to get people’s money on tap for a nice, steady flow of revenue. But we users are not cash cows, and I resent the feeling that that is what we're being perceived as by Adobe. You pay a high cash price for this software, and then you get help that's really mostly Adobe bragging and self-promotion via developer geeks with poor communication skills.
Now that I've done my indignant customer scolding thing, does anybody know of a particular 3rd party book that addresses the 3d features that started a release or 2 ago and are supposedly so much better now for CS6?

The concept of the on-line Help is a good one - it can be updated instantly, and with the Community Help tie-in, can be expanded. This makes it even more "evergreen," than a PDF file.
However, just like you, I find it to be rather a pain. I come from the age of manuals, and appreciate having a good book, with an index, handy.
I have all of my manuals for PS, starting with version 2.5, and up through CS 2. Each has proved very useful, and each has been read from page 1, until the end.
Then, my life changed. First it was the PDF, and I would just take that to a printer (having to jump though some © hoops), but with the full, on-line, I find it tougher to locate what I need, and I have been using the program for decades, so know most naming conventions - until those change.
Once, one would have a ring-bound manual, and about every quarter, and little package would arrive with revisions, and addenda, to be added to the manual. Those days are long gone. I have even paid extra $ to Adobe, for manuals in one of my last upgrades. For me, that was worth the expense.
Still, because I am a dinosaur, I had better get used to the state of affairs. CS 6 will likely be my last upgrade, and I will just rely on Photoshop User magazine to fill me in.

  • How to launch adobe illustrator 6 after updating to yosemite os

After updating my Mini (mid 2011) OS to Yosemite, Adobe Illustrator CS6 has launch error: To open Adobe Illustrator cs6.app you need to install the legacy java SE6 runtime. I attempted to install but each time Java SE6 runtime is downloaded it shows up as a damaged file. Now what?

    you can go to:
    Macintosh HD ▸ Applications ▸ Adobe Illustrator CS6 ▸ Adobe Illustrator CS6 ▸ Contents ▸ MacOS
use right click and "Show Package Contents" on Adobe Illustrator Application.
In the MacOS folder you can find Adobe Illustrator (black Icon with exec in green font for terminal program). Double click it and Illustrator opens.
Be aware this is just a workaround (sometimes it crashes stating it cannot find a legacy Java 6, which is completely outdated and a security risk). Also the terminal window keep open...

    Hi all,

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 7 - Selecting Multiple Still Images for Time Stretch

    Hi,
I have Adobe Premiere Elemetns 7. I would like to be able to select multiple still images on the timeline so that I can timestretch them all at the same time.
I understand that you can do this when you drag the photos over to the sceneline, then get the dialog box that asks for the time duration or transition duration. I would like to do this after they have been placed on the timeline though.
I would like to put say an hour of music on the music line, then drag over say 400 photos, then timestretch the photos such that thier time matches the music timeline. Smartsound does not seem to find the music on my computer to do this, I would like to use my own music.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Tonight why don't you download the free 30 tryout of Premiere Elements 8, check out the feature of interest in particular, and determine if it is worth it. Check out it's stability in your computer environment. You do not have to uninstall Premiere Elements 7. When you install Premiere Elements 8, the installation process detects prior versions and tells you that you do not have to uninstall them, just use one at a time.
Depending on how things go, get on the phone to Adobe Customer Service Monday morning and be pleasant but determined, express your need for the new feature(s), and request an exchange, the new for the old. As a last resort, request your money back for version 7.
Please update us on your progress. But, in the back of your mind, keep the old thought of "be careful what you wish for". You may win one with the duration feature but lose some ground with stability and other features.
