Adobe's Upgrade Schedule

Hey everyone,
Do you know if Adobe releases an upgrade schedule for Captivate? It seems like new versions come out every year and while they are always worth upgrading, it costs our company a ton of money to upgrade all of our users every time. I want to make a case for us to upgrade to Captivate 5 because I want to be able to use it on my Mac and it does seem a lot more efficient with the new platform. However, if Captivate 6 is going to come out in six months or a year, I'd rather wait. We already upgraded everyone to Cap. 4 earlier this year and IT is starting to give me dirty looks when I even say the word Captivate now because they know I'll be asking for an upgrade.
Thanks,
Kristen

Gary,
Does that fix only apply to dissolves between stills on two tracks, or is it also required for, say, 30-40 stills on the same track for example?
I'm testing CS4 trial, and the thought of having to set a null opacity key on each and every successive dissolved still would drive me up the wall. I have a couple of clients who require long still sequences in between video clips. Is this part of the 'stills problem' I keep hearing references to.

  • Adobe's Upgrade Policy Unfair - Buyer Beware.

I had an early version of Premiere, Version 6.1, from many years ago. I switch to Liquid Edition then, mainly because the DVD authoring was integrated and better. Recently, I decided to go back to Premiere for the AVCHD editing and the Liquid line is being dropped. I purchased the CS4 upgrade on 3/1. Adobe announced in early April CS5. I didn't feel it was fair to ask me to pay another $300 to upgrade to CS5 since I just paid $300 to upgrade to CS4.
I contacted Adobe and they could care less. I could have bought the CS4 upgrade on April 11th, one day before the CS5 announcement, and I would still have to pay another $300 to upgrade from CS4 to CS5.
Be careful when you upgrade - it may cost you more than you think.

Do you really want to belabor this argument?  Months ago, adobe stated on their web site that CS5 would require 64 BIT os.  Then more recently, they posted videos on their site showing  the Mercury Playback Engine on CS5.  Then they also told everyone (and posted it on their site too I think) that they were going announce CS5 on such and such a date.  And they have been pretty steady with an 18 month release schedule the past few iterations.  And they have always had a cutoff date and their has never been a sliding scale for upgrade pricing based on when you first purchased your qualifying product.  Honestly, if you did not know any of these things, you did not do much (any?) research before purchasing the product.  We live in the internet age.  It would have been easy to ask in this forum or several others before your purchase if anyone knew what Adobe's upgrade policies were because you were considering buying CS4.  I am sure you would have got as many posts telling you to hold off for a few weeks on that post than you have her telling you that you are full of it.
If you don't know what sour grapes are, it is an expression that we use in the US when someone thinks that they have been taken advantage of or treated unfairly but most others who are more objective and have nothing personally to gain/loose over the issue think that said person should simply upset at their own inadequacies.   http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/sour-grapes.html  I forget that this is an international forum.  Sorry for the US "expression".
The fact is that your post says "unfair policy" and "buyer beware" right in the tidal.  These are pretty strong statements.  You did not need to beware because the same thing has been going on for years.  Adobe's policy has not changed much in this regard.  This is much more harse than I don;t like the fact that they don;t have a sliding scale for upgrades.  What you are saying in your subject is that you were duped or tricked.  this is much more harsh than saying  "I would be ok with paying something towards the upgrade, just not the full $300".

  • Upgrade schedule?

Is there a fairly fixed upgrade schedule?  I see that the current version of Muse has been out 6 months, and I don't want to buy a couple of guide books that will be obsolete in 3 weeks.

  • Adobe CS3 Upgrade

I purchased Adobe CS3 Upgrade at an auction with the intent to sell.  I contacted chat support and they said the seller (auction) needs to transfer the license o me and then I can sell and transfer the rights to a buyer.  I can't get back on chat to ask any follow up questions.  Chat support said they'd put a case number in my profile and I can't find it anywhere.

You should get back in touch with chat support if you have unfinished business with them.

  • How can I download Adobe CS5 upgrade on a new computer.

I just bought a new computer and am trying to download Adobe CS5 upgrade. When installing it says I do not have a qualifying adobe product. I have a student version of Adobe CS2 premium which the installer also does not recognize the serial number.....pay all this money and can't even use it....

You are allowed on two activated copies.  If you already have reached this limit you will need to deactivate one and then try it.  If you old computer crashed it is still considered activated.  If so you need to call customer service tomorrow and explain and they can reactivate.
Hope this helps get you up and running.

  • CS5 to CC7: Adobe's Upgrade Policy

Yes, I know there is no CC7 yet, but I was reading about Adobe's upgrade policy and it seems that they've switched to a "one version back" model. When I read the terms, they talk about CS to CS versions, but they don't mention going from CS to CC.  Will I be able to go from CS5 to the next version of CC?

The Cloud subscription model (CC version) has no connection to the Creative Suite versions*.
CS6 is the last in the line of Creative Suites.
There will be no CS7. You can upgrade from CS5 to CS6 but that's the end of the line for upgrades.
    * CS3-CS6 owners are eligible for discounted pricing for their first 12 months of Cloud membership. After that, it's full price.

  • How should an application developer handle Adobe AIR upgrades on Windows and Mac?

    Hi,
My questions concern Windows 7 (and later) and Mac OS X:
Is Adobe AIR upgraded automatically? In other words, by default (if the user does not uncheck something during installation), is there a service/polling mechanism that checks for a new version of Adobe AIR and recommends an update to the user?
What happens if a user has an older version of Adobe AIR installed, and my application requires a more recent Adobe AIR version? Do I, as an application developer, have to do something or is it handled by Adobe AIR automatically?
Have Adobe AIR introduced many backward compatibility issues in the past? Is it possible for a user to have multiple versions of Adobe AIR installed at the same time? Can I, as an application developer, specify that this exact version of Adobe AIR is needed by my application?
If there sometimes are backwards compatibility issues with Adobe AIR. Is there a way for me as an application developer to try out a new version before it is released to the normal users? In other words, is there a way for me to make sure that my application works with the next version of Adobe AIR before it is released by the normal channels to the general user base?
Is there something else which should be taken into consideration when it comes to Adobe AIR upgrades and versioning issues?

Well we would suffer especially much from two of the drawbacks listed at Packaging a captive runtime bundle for desktop computers:
The AIR in-browser API for installing and launching an AIR application from a web page is not supported
AIR update API and framework are not supported
We are using the Air application as a solution for printing, which is invoked using the AIR in-browser API when the user clicks the "Print" button. I would guess the route to make it work with a captive runtime (which was something new to me), which I see as a normal stand alone application, would be to register a specific MIME type with the OS and each Web browser which is handled by our print application. And let a file of our new MIME type contain the information passed in the in-browser invocation at the moment. That would trigger the application when a user clicks Print.
We also use the AIR update API to update our application. Being without it means that we would need to create our own update mechanism.
These two paths to handle the given drawbacks above would mean a lot of work for us. Especially as we want to support both Windows and Mac. It might be worth it if the answers to my questions in the original post indicates that we can expect another type of problems instead.
I am still interested in answers to my original questions. But we will certainly take the captive runtime approach into consideration. As I didn't know about it, I really appreciate your answer!

  • Is Adobe's upgrade cycle too short?

I'm really happy CS4 includes the new multiple artboards feature. I find new uses and productivity enhancements for it in my work every day. But it seems like a lot of options that could be used with it were left out. No way to renumber or assign names to the artboards. No way to get back to the original Document Setup, that includes artboards. No default method for setting up master pages.
Its has been suggested that the reason for this is that the engineers didn't have time to fully implement all the options they wanted to flesh this feature out. Why not?
I think it's because they have to stick to Adobe's rigid upgrade release schedule, which seems to be around 18 months and which dictates that the product will release on a certain date, so you better make sure whatever features are included at least work to a "good enough" degree. They can be completed in the next release.
The problem is that the next release also has to include brand new features to justify an upgrade price, and there's insufficient time to revisit incomplete features from the previous version.
In my opinion, Adobe should add more time to the current upgrade cycle - or better yet, don't release it until the features are complete. More time between releasese would necessitate a timely, perhaps mid-cycle FREE dot upgrade, with bug fixes and minor enhancements, but for some reason (probably the short upgrade cycle) Adobe is loath do do this.
I know this flies in the face of the creative suite model, where every Adobe product has the same deadline. But it seems to me that what you get in quantity in this model, you give up in the quality of the individual products. I think the current schedule regime is simply asking too much of engineers (not to mention consumers).
This is pure conjecture on my part. For all I know, the whole schedule is completely driven by the engineers and their desire to get new stuff into the hands of users as soon as possible.

Well I have a little first hand knowledge of this, I was a part of a couple of focused groups that were held here in New York.
That focus group i particular had a strong influence on what Adobe should do. There may have been other groups that had a say but unless they said the same exact thing as this focus group they did not have the same influence.
This was what they wanted to know, how long was long enough before you want to see an upgrade. I thought two years but everyone else said 1 1/2 years and there was no two ways about it. This focused group was actually about Photoshop.
Then they said that an update should be a .01, .02, etc a point .1, .2, etc should be reserved for a upgrade that might be a free one for enhancing a feature that was new or old in which they found it necessary to improve which meant that it is not likely to ever be employed. that I went along with the first one about 1 1/2 year seemed a little rushed.
They also asked us about the slash screen and I thought the Photoshop one the showed us look more like Illustrator and that I would prefer a very clean looking splash screen that was more professional looking, very simply and efficient looking.
Everyone else seemed to accept that even though they pretty much disagreed with me on everything else. I know what I said had a strong influence about killing the splash screen they wanted to use originally, what made them ultimately clean up the splash screens later on I do not know but I do not think that had anything with what happened in that focus group. Not directly.
The policies that Adobe is now taking including the help online was also discuss and i do not really recall what the consensus but i seem to remember that they prefer to be able to access resources on line and they like on line tutorials over a help system and i think they were willing to pay for such services.
The group was made up of photographer professional & amateurs, art directors, production people, and one or two Illustrators about twenty people in all.
The art directors opinions seem to weigh the most influence in the group and based on how they asked the question it seemed geared to their needs most and so there was not reason to opposed their suggestions in a strong way.
Even though I strongly disagreed on a couple of issues there seemed to be no reason to oppose what they had to say as it seemed quite logical for the large user base.
So that is how the decision to upgrade every 18 months came about. At least after that it has always been 18 months.
It was user defined by a very strong demand.

  • Adobe CS3 Upgrade on 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro

I am planning to purchase the new generation MacBook Pro in about a month.
My question is about Adobe CS3. I currently use CS2 on an older G4 PowerBook because I could not deal with the performance dip on the older MacBook Pro (1.83 GHz with 512MB RAM). So I have a licensed copy of CS2 for PPC. If I buy the Upgrade Version of CS3 at a much reduced price, will the transition to Universal work on a MacBook Pro? No more Rosetta? Performance problems solved?
I realize Rosetta probably struggled with my previous MacBook's speed and lack of RAM. But I don't want to go through that hair-pulling again. I don't get into that advanced PhotoShop, etc. of CS3 but I'm willing to upgrade just to have it Universal and be more reliable. And, of course, I'd like to save the $800 on having to buy the Full Version of the software.
    Thanks everyone for your feedback.
By the way, I had the same performance issue with MS Office for Mac. Almost 30 seconds to open Word! Anyone know if this becomes a non-issue with newer Macbook Pros??
    1.8 PowerPC G5 3GB DDR SDRAM Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Your problem your your previous MBP was simply RAM. 512MB when trying to use CS2 products is simply insanity. If you opt for a new MBP with the standard 2GB, better still with an upgrade to 4GB, then CS3 will perform extremely well. RAM us hugely important and one of the biggest bottlenecks in today's hardware and software requirements.

  • If I update to Lion from 10.6.8, will Adobe CS4 "upgrade" work?????

I have Adobe CS4 from an "upgrade".  Will these adobe programs work if I upgrade to Lion?  Please, need an answer ASAP, so I know whether to make my next computer a Mac or a PC!!!!  It is absolutely ridiculous that my friend, who has at least 8 PC computers ( including business computers) is able to use all features of icloud using Win7(which is 16 months old), and I cannot use it on my "Apple" antique using 10.6.8(which is only 9 months old)  (2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) for the same purpose.
I have never even had a PC, always an Apple product.  Now I get slapped in the face, HARD.  Apple just killed me for EVER buying another Apple computer, if I am unable to use ICloud with my computers which WILL run my adobe products.  I also have an IMac Intel Core duo 3.06, two IPads and a new Iphone.  and now I am done with Apple products I guess, if I have to update to Lion to use ICloud with a computer.  Especially if Lion doesn't support my current expensive suite of CS4(UPGRADE), and other Apps.  What on earth is Apple trying to do, phase out of computers totally? Have a relative who works for Apple, and no one can figure out why the company is so favoring the PC people.  The only thing I can come up with is that Win7 is a far superior program to OS10.6.8, and is likely vastly superior to the current joke of "Lion", and the upcoming "Mountain Lion".  At least Snow Leopards have some dignity, and honesty in their "live" form.  "Lion" is aptly named after an animal widely known for killing and eating cubs of its own species.  Mountain Lions are sneaky, creepy stalkers, who attack suddenly without notice, and kill animals off efficiently and quickly.  Male Mt.Lions also are known to kill the young of their own species, even their own cubs.  I guess these new OS's are aptly named, as they certainly are killing off those who have been faithful to Apple for so long.
I can buy a PC running Win 7, with the speed, programs, etc., that I need, for far less than a new, comparable Mac, which it seems will require me to purchase all new expensive Apps. (Adobe CS+), etc.
Why is Apple unable to either 1) offer its previously totally faithful adherants the ability to use its ICloud service using 10.6.8, which only came out 9 months ago (while Win 7 and Vista users can use the service easily), or at least make its new OS, work with expensive Apps owned by people, which work on 10.6.8, but will not work, so I hear, on "Lion" (and presumably not on "Mountain Lion" either).   Apple is/has turned into a predator of the worst sort, without a single thought or care about previously faithful customers.   WHY?
Also, off my wagon and back to my question;  will an "UPGRADE" of Adobe CS4 work with the latest updated "Lion"?  Thanks!

I went to that page.  Basically, it didn't specifically answer my question, or I am too dense to find the answer.  I understand that there are a few problems with Photoshop, which is the main use (of mine).  I could live with what it says.  I also found that there were problems with CS4, and using the brush tool, when I updated to 10.6.8. Found a fix to that by updating my Quicktime.  Why that works, I have no idea.  I am not a computer whiz, in fact at the other end of the spector, but read on a discussion that this updating of Quicktime worked, so tried it, and it did!
This community is a life saver for me.  I live in rural Wyoming (I guess all of Wyoming is rural.....) and no one knows anything about Macs.  All my problems have been solved by you great people!  And I thank you !
My present concern is:  I read somewhere else, that if my version of Photoshop, which is CS4, was purchased as an "upgrade", which it was, then maybe it will not upload to "Lion", as maybe the disk (upgrade), I have, may use Rosetta, which is NOT included in "Lion".   What I have read is that I would have to have a "new" (not an upgrade) version of CS4 in order for it to work with "Lion".   Anyone out there know the answer????  Photoshop users?????
Geniuses????  If you know, please help me out here.  I love my Macs, but really am irritated that the friends I have tried to talk into buying Mac computers, but didn't, now can enjoy all the advantages of ICloud, with an older version of their computer program (Win 7 OR(!!!)  VISTA,  and I cannot !!!!  Here I sit, with my 2 beloved Macs, both fairly new, 2 IPads, a new IPhone, and I am the one that cannot use ICloud??????  Was it in fact made for PC people, who have become Apple consumers through iPhone and iPad, and not made for the faithful, longtime Apple consumers????  HELP!!!!
