Adobe Standard 8 as default PDF viewer, except in websites

Hello
I am trying to get Adobe Standard 8 to deploy as the default application when dealing with PDFs, but have Adobe Reader X as the embedded PDF viewer in Internet Explorer.
I have been successful in getting both applications to install, and X be the default viewer in Internet Explorer, however I can't seem to get 8 to be the default PDF application for opening files on the desktop.  I have played around with a number of different combinations of customization opens through the avaliable tools, but I can't seem to get it to land on the specific configuration I'm looking for.
Is there a "quick" registry fix I can apply to impliment this scenario?
Thanks,
Tim

Hi,
What you're trying to do is unsupported. See http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/874/cpsid_87424.html.
Only X and 9.x have that capability.

  • Adobe Reader is always default PDF viewer, why

I've told Leopard to "Always Use" Preview to open PDFs, but it always defaults back to Adobe reader. There is no toggle in Adobe to tell it not to be the default viewer. Am I missing something?

    Just viewing PDFs.
I right click on the PDF in Finder. Open With>Other>Enable All Applications>check "Always open with">Select Preview
It opens with preview.......but, on the second time around, Adobe kicks in and is the default PDF viewer for all future PDF viewing.

  • How do I disable Adobe Reader as the default PDF viewer?

I have already set the default application to open PDFs to Preview by using the "Open with..." and "Change All" option.
Now PDFs open in Preview, but I have a weird side effect:  when I create a PDF (from Microsoft Word, etc.) the document is created with an Adobe Reader ICON, it then quickly changes to a Preview ICON (and opens in Preview).
PDFs are doing what I want, but the flash of Adobe Reader ICON (pun intended) is quite annoying.  I have searched through the Adobe Reader Preferences and can find nothing that seems related. Any ideas?

Instead of saving as a PDF thru Work do a Print ➙ PDF ➙ Save as PDF and it will be saved the first time with the Preview icon.

  • Set Adobe Professional as Default PDF Viewer

Is there a way to set Adobe Professional as my default pdf viewer instead of my Adobe Reader?  I know there was a setting somewhere that I changed to accomplish this before, but I can't find it again.

No need to uninstall. The setting you're talking about is under Edit -
Preferences - General, if I'm not mistaken.

  • Windows 8.1 is forgetting Acrobat as my default PDF viewer after startup

I installed Arcobat XI Pro on Windows 8.1. I set Acrobat as my default PDF viewer during the installation. After the installation, none program was set as the default PDF viewer. When I tried to open a PDF file, Windows asked which program I want to use as my default PDF viewer. I Choose Acrobat.
Each time I start up my computer, Windows has forgotten my default PDF viewer. I did some research to find out if it was a problem with Windows or with Acrobat. I turns out to be a problem with Acrobat, becuase if I set Adobe Reader as my default PDF viewer, Windows does remember my default PDF viewer after startup.
Is there anybody with the same problem and do you have a solution?

    Hi Anand,
    Thanks for your responds.
This way is not working either. Both Reader and Acrobat are version 11.0.9.
Do you have any other solution? Beside, do you have any idea what is causing the problem?

  • Issues with setting "Maked Reader the default PDF viewer" with Adobe Customization Wizard XI

I am using the Adobe Customization Wizard XI. I have set the following options in the Adobe Customization Wizard.
    Personalization Options
Enabled the checkbox for Suppress display of End User License Agreement (EULA)
    Installation Options
Selected the radio button for Make Reader the default PDF viewer
Run Installation: selected radio button Silently(No Interface)
    Security
Enhanced Security Settings - Clicked drop down and set value to Disable
    Online Services and Features
    Checked Disable product updates
Checkd In Adobe Reader, disable Help > Purchase Adobe Acrobat
    Checked Disable Product Improvement Program
Checked Disable Viewing of PDF with Ads for Adobe PDF
Checked Disable all Adobe online services based workflows and entry points.
I have tried to deploy the MSI with MST via GPO and Command Line with no luck.  Every time i deploy via below methods, the same result occurs, all of the options are set correctly except the "Make Reader the default PDF viewer".  I know how to manually set this option via Windows or Adobe interfaces but i am looking to roll this out to the masses and would not want a bunch of service desk calls because a user clicks on an Adobe PDF file and it is not opening in Adobe Reader.
    GPO
    Create New Package Use AcroRead.msi
    Choose Advanced
Deployment Options - Click Uninstall this application when it falls out of the scope of management.
Modifications - Select Transform file located in the folder of MSI
    Command Line.
Tried these options to try and apply "Make Reader the default PDF viewer"
    msiexec /i  "<path>\AcroRead.msi" TRANSFORMS="<path>\TransformFile.mst"
    msiexec /i  "<path>\AcroRead.msi" TRANSFORMS="<path>\TransformFile.mst" /qn
    msiexec /i "<path>\AcroRead.msi" IW_DEFAULT_VERB=Read
    msiexec /i  "<path>\AcroRead.msi" TRANSFORMS="<path>\TransformFile.mst" IW_DEFAULT_VERB=Read /qn
Anyone know how to make this setting work with the Transform file, i sure would appreciate assistance on this issue.

  • Keeping Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro as the Default .PDF viewer

    Ok,
So with all the new vulnerabilities with Adobe reader, our company is try to stay with the current updates of Adobe Reader.  The problem I am running into with patching all the workstations is that we have a large user community that uses Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro as their default .pdf viewer etc. When patching all workstations with the latest Adobe Reader it changes the default to Reader.
Has anyone had this issues? Or is there away to keep Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro the default when upgrading the Reader?
I'm thinking of removing Reader all together on the workstations that have Pro.
    Thanks
    B

That is the Adobe recommended and supported setup.
Too many problems arise when you have those two Adobe products on the same machine.

when i download a pdf document and then click to open it, by default it opens using preview. how do i disable that and make adobe acrobat my default pdf viewer?

  • How to deploy disabled Firefox as the default PDF viewer via GPO

I am trying to change the settings of 204 Windows 7 PCs. They all use Firefox and with have Adobe Acrobat XI. I would like to know how to use the Mozilla Administrative Template or how to create a GPO to change the default pdf viewer in Firefox to Acrobat XI.

I'm having this problem too, except I'm trying to push it out to 400 PC's with 2-10 users per PC. i need a way to be able to configure it so when a user logs into the PC via our domain login Firefox will be automatically configured to open PDF's from Firefox in an Adobe Reader window, otherwise we have to manually configure it like FredMcD said, and that gets very frustrating after the 2nd PC

  • Set preview as default PDF viewer

    Hello,
I downloaded the update for Adobe Reader and during installation, it over-rode my choice to use Preview as my default PDF viewer in Safari.  I've searched high and low and tried to change this from both Safari's preferences and Adobe Reader's preferences.  Unfortunately, the section to "click" in Adobe is grayed out and will not allow me to deselect it.  I also tried uninstalling Adobe Reader, but that just caused Safari to not open any PDF documents.
Any thoughts on how to correct this are greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Eden

Right or control click a PDF file you already have on your hard drive then click Get Info.
Click the pop up menu next to: Open with
Choose Preview from the menu or navigate to the Applications folder and select Preview from there.
    Then click: Change All

  • Restoring Preview as default pdf viewer in Safari

    Hi,
I mistakenly set Acrobat 7 as my default pdf viewer in Safari and now cannot change back to preview. I tried to click on a pdf doc and set preview as the default, but that doesn't work for pdf files that I need to download.
I reset Safari, and now it no longer asks me to choose an Acrobat to use, but will not display the download, most likely because it is trying to use Acrobat 5.0 that is installed and is incompatable with Safari.
I just want preview back. Does anyone know how to do this?
thanks in advance for your help.
    Amy

    Tuttle,
    THANK YOU!!!!!!
I was going crazy trying to figure that out. Most of my pdfs (scientific papers)don't print well from Adobe. I have a LaserWriter 4/600 PS that I hooked up to my Airport Express via a crossover ethernet/Farallon system.
I'm writing a paper and really need to be able to do this.
Thanks for the quick reply. You continue to save me.....

  • Default pdf viewer Reader icon in finder shows Acrobat

I previously selected Acrobat Pro as my default pdf viewer. I then changed back to Reader, however in the Mac Finder I am getting the Acrobat Icon. I changed All Files to Reader, but the icon will not change back.
Am running Reader 11.0.2 and Acrobat Pro 9.5.4
Operating system Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5

    Hi ,
Please See the below Steps :
    Step 1
Single click a PDF file you wish to open or any PDF file in general while holding the control key. Then select 'Get Info' from the menu you've opened.
    Step 2
Under the heading 'Open with,' the current default application for opening PDFs is listed. If there is no application listed you may need to click the triangle to the left of 'Open with' so that it points downward to reveal the current setting.
    Step 3
Click on the application listed to open a menu displaying additional applications. In this menu locate the most recent version of Adobe Reader. If Reader is not listed or an old version of the software is listed select 'Other' from the bottom of the menu.  Navigate through your Applications folder to locate the icon for the Adobe Reader application and click to highlight it. Click the Add button to select Reader.
    Step 4
Back in the information window click the 'Change All' button so that all subsequent PDF files will be opened by Adobe Reader.
    Step 5
Click the Continue button to confirm that you'd like to change your settings. Now all PDF files will be opened by Adobe Reade
