Adobe utilizes my CPU over RAM, this normal?

So i ill start by saying i have a quad core i7 3.4ghz system with a 2gb Nvidia EVGA Geforce GTX 750ti FTW GPU and 16gb of ram.
when ever i render a project i have begun to notice that my system is utilizing my cpu over my RAM
my CPU will be ranging from 90-99% when rendering while my ram is only at 50% tops
when i have designated 13gb of RAM to adobe and 3gb of ram to everything else.
is this just how its going to be? or should my adobe be utilizing my ram over my cpu first?

Rendering/exporting is mostly a CPU process ... RAM is simply a fast in/out temp storage place for data that's partly "cooked" and waiting it's next step of processing ... in the CPU. If it needed more of the RAM, it would use it ... but as it is running up to and above 90% of the actual processing capability, it's not needing more.
GPU is also not used very much in exporting ... with a few exceptions. So ... exporting is primarily about your CPU, the front-side-bus (fsb) getting data moved from disc to CPU to RAM & back ... and your disc in/out sustained capabilities.
If  your CPU is nearly maxed, this is as fast as that machine's going to go.

I transferred my data from icloud onto my new ipad and one of my games didn't back up as i saved it initially. I have to start all over is this normal

You can't merge the backups, you'll have to delete the backup of your old phone.  If it says it's currently in use when you try, that will normally clear up on its own but may take 3-5 days to do so.  Give it a few days and try deleting the old backup again.
In the meantime, you can create a manual backup of your new phone on your computer by connecting it to your computer, opening iTunes, clicking on the name of your phone in iTuens, going to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and clicking Back Up Now.  Also go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  Then you'll be safe until you can start backup up to iCloud again.

  • Adobe Camera Raw - CPU or RAM?

    Hey All!
Please read the whole post, but if you want to cut to the chase, my question is: for ACR conversions would I be better off with an (Windows) 8-core system and 6gigs of ram, or a 4-core system and 12 gigs of ram?
I am a professional photographer who, after upgrading to some equipment that spits out serious file sizes, needs to upgrade his computer system.  I shoot almost exclusively RAW and I rely primarily on Adobe Camera Raw to convert my files and open them in photoshop.  While photoshop performance is a consideration, my biggest concern is to be able to open ACR images ridiculously quick.
Right now, working off 21 megapixel images on my current system, it takes between 10 - 20 seconds to open/convert a single file into photoshop.  I'm aiming for a couple of seconds.
My current system (please don't laugh ... I know its bad):
    XP 32-Bit
    dual-core 2.00GHz
    3G DDR2 Ram (with 3G switch enabled)
    5400 rpm Hard Drives
    Running CS4 and ACR 5.3
    Future Set Up Considerations:
    Vista 64-Bit
    Processor/RAM
    a) quad-core-Q9600 3.00 GHz with 8 gigs DDR2 (1150MHz)
    b) i7-920 2.66 GHz with 12 gigs of DDR3 (1600 MHz) - adds about $500 to price - worth it?
    c) 2 Xeon-quad-core-5530 2.40 GHz with 6gigs DDR3 (1600Mhz) - adds about $1000 to price - worth it?
    d) something AMD?!?!
    Hard Drives (7200rpm)
2 for images storage (one as an internal backup)
1 For operating system, applications, music, etc
    1 For scratch disk
Basically, the question comes down to whether extra cores or extra ram will ultimately make the biggest difference in the ACR performance
During my testing on my (sad) currently system, here are my conclusions (let me know what you think):
Changing the 3G switch to allow the jump from 2 to 3 gigs of ram usage for applications makes no difference in performance
When I am opening up ACR files both cores show 100% usage (will that continue over 4 or 8 cores?)
Photoshop in general seems to be more CPU limited in my case than ram limited (most of the time is says 100% efficiency but things still take bloody long
From some more experienced users, or users who have quad or octa core system or systems with insane amount of ram, I woudl really appreciate your feedback!
    Thanks for the long read!

    Hey Zeno!
    Thanks for the reply.
I would have to disagree thought that it is hard drive limited at this moment.  Take a look at my task manager:
It was running about 5% before I started converting pictures, and then as soon as I started converting the pictures, both cores hit 100% (with little gaps between pictures), and then back to 5% after they were done.  You can also see the ram alocation being increased with each picture that is opened.
So basically, I am wondering if going to a quad core will have all 4 CPU's hit 100%, thus coming close to doubling the speed.  Or if I go i7 then with hyper threading it'll go to 8 effective cores.  Or if I go to dual Xeon processors I'd have 8 cores and with hyperthreading effectively 16 cores.
I am wondering if anyone has experience with a quad core or octacore system that might be able to share some insight.
But I would agree that probably for now 6Gs of ram is probably plenty.
I also don't understand when you said:
"same goes with the CPU, the more cores you have the less benefit you get out of adding more of them"
Could you elaborate.  Its just that it takes about 15-20 seconds to convert a single file, and space that out even over 50 photos, that is still 15 minutes of wasted time.  Just trying to get the best I can without wasting needlessly.
    Thanks a ton!

  • CPU speed up and down in Hardware Monitor...is this normal?

Just downloaded the newest version of Hardware Monitor, and the CPU graph is bouncing constantly between 2000 and 2667 mHz. Is this normal?
None of the temperatures shown seem abnormal...CPU cores are all between 30 and 33 degrees C, the stock 512mb RAM modules are the hottest things at 53-55C.

Basically the Core 2 series processors do tend to save a considerable amount of wattage by simple stepping down a little. I have to say that it's quite remarkable given it's only a 667MHz clock speed drop rather than the usual halving to get the same power savings.

  • While attempting to run a game in bootcamp on a rMBP, the CPU gets hotter until it throttles and the game stops working. Is this normal? A machine like this shouldn't have this problem. I haven't touched it and fans are maxed with CPU still at 90 degrees.

All right, here's what's going on. I have been trying ot run a very graphics intense game on my Macbook Pro with Retina Display through bootcamp on windows 7. When I start the game up, it runs beautifully.... for about ten minutes. Five minutes in, the fans start to whirl loudly. By ten minutes in, performance begins to degrade noticibly and the game starts to stutter. I live with the stuttering until it becomes completely unreasonable and I shut down the game. When I come back to my computer several hours later, the process repeats.
Here is what I believe is happening. When I start the game, the CPU immediately begins to heat up, as CPUs do. Ten minutes in, the CPU has heated up past the safety limit and begins throttling itself back so as to protect itself. Over the course of the next little while, it continues to throttle itself until it finally doesn't have enough power to properly run the game at any reasonable speed, at which point, I get frustrated and quit. My concern is this. I understand that mobile rigs aren't necessarilly the most game friendly, however, this computer should be more than capable enough to handle some light gaming. (Mind you, I'm only playing ten minutes in when the game starts to lag.) Is this something I need to bring into Apple? Is this normal?
    Thanks for your help!
    Malaxtom

Did you download and install the Apple drivers onto the Win7 system when setting up BootCamp? Without them, Windows will have no way of getting the fans to do their stuff when things get hot.

Thank you!

Thankyou for the reply, the pop up window is labelled backing up ,I can see the progress line its really passed 3 hours still as mentioned about 10 15% progress .Please all i want to know is it worth continuing or its a waste of time. Its worth mentioning that since i've got the phone 2 years ago I've never updated it and the sole reason I'm doing it now is since 2 days ago i can't get my emails on my phone but i do get them on my PC.
Went to an Apple store an advisor told me to update it as it might solve the problem.Although i did delete my account internet account then register it again , also turned the phone on , off.Unfortunately still can't get my emails on the move .

  • Upgrading RAM cards not showing up in system profiler... is this normal?

Just replaced both 1GB RAM cards in my macbook pro with two 2GB RAM cards, but when I go into "about my mac" it is still saying that I only have 2GB of memory, and when I go into system profiler and click "memory" it is still showing/giving details on two 1GB cards, is this normal or did I not install the new RAM cards properly? I assumed it would update the info to show the additional memory?

    This is not normal
Open up the Mac and reseat the RAM modules. This may help.
If this doesn't resolve the issue, return the modules to the supplier and get the proper modules.
    Best.

When jailbroken, you cannot update the iOS on your device. The only way to fix it is to do a full restore through iTunes. Before you do this make sure you backup your device and everything on it.

  • It takes over an hour for the rental movies from itunes to download. is this normal?

it takes over an hour to download. is this normal?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
That all depends on your internet service. 6 Mbps or better is recommended for HD rental content. 2.5 Mbps for SD. You can check your actual internet speed at speedtest.net.
If you'd rather download SD content to avoid waits, you can change the type of content available by default in settings.

  • What is the biggest bottleneck on this machine - CPU, GPU, RAM (now at 8GB), or the HD, and would I be better getting a current 27" iMac, a 2012 Mac Mini, or SSDs for my current Mini?

    Hi Tom,
I just wanted to ask you about what you said about the color correction. To be quite honest I'm not sure what the best workflow is, and I haven't gotten my feet wet in multi-cam editing. Basically my work-flow has been.
    1) Import from the camera as optimized media - I found that adding color-correction at the import stage cause a severe hang with my tape-based Canon unit.
    2) Color-correct the imported files before loading any files into a project
    3) Drag files onto the timeline
    4) Click on the color-correction box
    5) Start editing - Usually I have one camera zoomed a little tighter on the singer, one on the whole band, and my iPad or iPhone camera at different angles so I start cutting things according to who is the focus of the moment, add a Ken Burns effect every here and there, Titles, an occassional transition effect.
    6) Add music effects after the looks are taken care of
    7) Export
Are you recommending clicking on the color-correction box after everything is done?
    Thanks - TZ

  • X200 CPU reaches 100 celsius degrees. is this normal?

I'm using LenovoThinkVantage Toolbox to do a CPU stress test and and the same time I'm running TPFanControl to monitor the speed of the fan and the temperature of the CPU.
When I run the CPU stress test the temperature of the CPU reaches 100 degrees celcius with the fan going at 7000rpms which all of it sounds excessive and not right to me. Is this normal? or there is something wrong with my system.
    Thanks in advance

100C is around the maximum the CPU can deal with before sustaining damage.  Even then, running at that temperature for extended periods of time is most certainly going to be problematic.
I can't imagine it was designed to be run that way, so I'm guessing there's a problem.  Maybe a heatsink is not seated properly, or something is obstructing airflow.  Either way, I'd say that if you're under warranty it's worth having the depot take a look.

Even though you have 16gb of ram installed, 32 bit Windows can only use 4gb of it so 12gb is wasted.  This is the reason you are getting not enough memory errors and is a known problem with Lightroom an 32 bit Windows during export.   You need to change to 64 bit Windows.

  • Safari outgoing connections over 50.  Is this normal?

At times, I have over 50 outgoing tracking connections via safari, and I think it slows down my computer.  Is this normal, and can I limit this?  I tried blocking them but eventually I couldn't access the search engines, eg. google.  I think this is excessive and should be limited, and some of the links look redundant to me.  Is this normal activity?

Every webpage (unless it is really old and poorly built) contains all kinds of embedded links, images, scripts and other content.  Every one of those embedded elements exists at its own URI.  When you open a web page, your browser gets the contents of the page, which includes all those embedded element URIs - which means that the browser then has to go and fetch each of them in order to be able to display them in the page when it is rendered in your web browser.
So yes, every time you open a web page, there will be a flurry of other connections - and the richer the content of the page you are loading, the more additional connections will be required to get all of its content.
Now I've never used Norton, so I can't really comment on it except to say that it appears to have a well-earned low reputation vis-a-vis Macs...but regardless of what security tools (if any) you use, trying to monitor HTTP connections while you are actively web browsing is going to be a collosal waste to time.
