Adobe X is slow and unresponsive
Really, if you annoy enough customers you might end up as a MBA case study! Listen to your customers and fix teh annoying wait time for Adobe X to respond. Oh and fire the stupid person that let it through QA in such a shocking state
http://www.softpedia.com/progViewOpinions/Adobe-Reader-2572,.html have a look at the overwheliming response

Adobe Reader extremely slow and unresponsive
Hi,
this is not a question, but a hint for people, who are using the Right Zoom extension by BlazingTools on a Mac. It (at least v. 1.7) doesn't seem to play well with Adobe Reader and this might also apply to Acrobat Pro. In my case Adobe Reader got really slow as soon as a document was opened. Every click on a menu item or button caused Adobe Reader to hang for several seconds. When I excluded the Reader from interacting with Right Zoom (via RZ-options), everything was fine again. You can disable many options that can possibly affect the performance of Adobe Reader; one example http://forums.adobe.com/message/5377721#5377721

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created. -

Firefox slow and unresponsive with facebook and zynga and then locks up for all other tabs open
I finally had to uninstall the beta 4 version as I couldn't take the issues any longer. The browser would become slow and then totally unresponsive mostly when using facebook and zynga. however, all tabs would become slow and unresponsive and would have to be rebooted. It wouldn't be 5 minutes and it would have to be done again. Even without facebook/zynga loaded in a tab, the entire browser is unbelievably slow. I am running mac os x 10.5.8.
I went back to the old version until I hear back as I just don't have time to sit and wait and wait and wait only to have to reboot the program constantly.I found a "work around". I installed Incredible Bookmarks 0.7.3. That allows me to add an additional Bookmarks Toolbar without causing the bouncing problem.
Putting bookmarks in the IB bar was a little tricky. It allows customization, but only to the extent of choosing bookmarks by topic or by a subdirectory of the Bookmarks Menu. What I actually put on the toolbar are such subdirectories (or folders), so I normally could only put one at a time. (This problem doesn't exist with the Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar, which allows you to copy subfolders, not just individual bookmarks).
I solved the problem by moving the additional folders I wanted to put in the IB Toolbar into a folder I (cleverly) called "IB Toolbar", then selected that for the actual Toolbar. The result: a row of folders, exactly what I wanted. (Actually, it's a second row of folders, since I still have the original Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar.)
I'd still prefer MultiRow, but that doesn't appear to be working with Firefox 3.6.18 and higher, so until I upgrade to Firefox 5 (and see if the Plus version will work) this will have to do. -
My MacBook pro is running very slow and unresponsive.
My MacBook pro is running very slow and unresponsive. I have mid 2010 model running on lion. Past few days it looks very unresponsive. Tried to reinstall lion as clean copy. Still no luck. Any help on this is much appreciated !
My model has 4 gb ram.Things That Can Keep Your Computer From Slowing Down
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
SuperDuper!
SyncTwoFolders
Synk Pro
Synk Standard
Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file. -
Itunes 11.1.1 slow and unresponsive
Since updating Itunes it has been very slow and unresponsive when trying to look at my podcast list. It is also automatically downloading the latest episode even though my selection is set to off.
noticed the same thing after i upgraded. after clicking on podcasts library itunes would freeze additionally when clicking on my iphone in itunes and selecting the podcast tap, itunes would beachball for 20-30 seconds. So I opened activity monitor and noticed everytime I selected podcast library or the podcasts to sync under the device network activity would skyrocket and itunes would freeze until it completed. It only occurs with podcasts.... Out of curiosity I turned wifi off, connected ethernet -> same prolem. The interesting part is if I disconnect ethernet and disable wifi everything is lightning fast, no delays, and no apparent issues other than the fact you cannot download new episodes.

Hello! I am having issues using Lightroom 5 (from first rel to 5.3RC). In the specificity it is rather slow and unresponsive. As soon as I edit something I get spinning wheel, sometimes editings work immediatly other times it is very laggish.
I have a late 2008 2.4ghz Macbook pro, 8gb ram, OWC SSD (with both application, catalogue, files and previews on). I edit 16mp raw files copied as DNG. Did not have problems with lightroom 4. Camera raw cache is set to 20gb on the SSD. Catalogue is very small (less than 500 pictures), as I use it only for editing and then I export and archive the JPGs separately. I have to say that perormance decreased after updating to Mavericks but it was not particularly good with Mountain Lion either.
I tried all the usual things (flushing caches, rebuilding previews, starting new catalogue, etc.) but to no avail. It looks like Lightroom 5 actually works rather worse than 4 performance wise, and that Mavericks does not help. Anyone with the same problems? Does anybody have suggestions on how to improve it?
Many thanks!So no clues whatsoever?
I have now worked quite a lot with the 5.3RC on Mavericks and I noticed that the main problem is the library module. As soon as I enter the develop module all is fine and it works pretty well. Editing is snappy and so forth. The library module is really laggish. Every two or three pictures that I only look at I get the spinning wheel, when I delete a file, spinning wheel, when I double click to enlarge a file, spinning wheel. I work with raw files converted to DNG, but I get the same problem with unconverted JPGS. The weird thing it that since I updated to Mavericks the whole JPG handling gives spinning wheels, i.e. when I Quicklook a JPG from Finder I have to wait a bit for it to load. Does anybody share my experience? -
Slow and unresponsive after iOS4 update
While the new features are nice, the slow down is not.
My 3G now seems slow and unresponsive in all Apps and generally.
Not very happy with that to be honest, don't see why it should be slower.I have had the same problem with my iPhone using the iOS4 update. I reset my iPhone and it was still slow. I also fully turned it off and waited a whole day and turned it on (resulted in a minor improvement to speed). I can't use multi tasking etc because I don't have the 3GS phone. I also had an issue where I couldn't open up iTunes!! I pressed the icon, and the phone froze in the iTunes screen without displaying any albums etc..... then it returned to the home screen. I repeated the process 3 times with the same result. It did eventually open up on the 4th time and played a song. I am not very impressed with the performance of my iPhone after the software update and will give it another week or so to see if Apple release any "fixes" after that I'm going to revert back to the old software.

Why is Safari becoming slow and unresponsive?
Ok - I have exactly the same problem. I can run safari and use it. After a short while it becomes slow and unresponsive. When I quit I get the rainbow ball of death and the only way I can stop the application is to force quit.
It is definitely linked to a particular network account as the guest account check above shows that it runs fine on another account.
As I watch system memory in actvity monitor while I use safari the fhe following occurs:
1. free memory gets gradually used up to about 50%
2. Inactive memory gradually builds to about 50% of total
3. Then page in and page outs build massively and the swap file goes into overdrive
I have 32GB memory on board but even so it doesn't take long for Safari to gobble it up.
At the same time CPU % shows 90-100% and Real Mem sits around 15-18GB.
By this stage the whole machine is slow and unresponsive as safari ***** up all its processor and memory resources.
I have taken the following action:
1. reset safari using the reset process built into the app - no difference
2. deleted the preferences file - no difference
3. deleted the Library/cache file - no difference
Thought about resetting NVRAM but decided that it wouldn't make much difference because it seems to be linked to a user.
Any thoughts/suggestions on other actions I can take would be welcome.
Are there other cache or preference files that I should be trashing. Can I delete and reinstall safari? I don't really want to have to go through the process of establishing a new user and rebuilding a reasonably substantial docs and photo library and set up.
Help.
<Re-Titled By Host>You forgot to mention what version of Safari you have, but:
If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
and here:
http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/01/26/apple_revamps_its_public_website_u sing_html5.html
For Snow Leopard/Lion users this should also be read:

Turning photostream on makes Iphoto very slow and unresponsive.
When i enable Photostream either through the settings or directly from Iphoto it causes Iphoto to become very slow and unresponsive.
When i click on an album to view it takes around 60 seconds for the album to open, when it finally opens all the thumbnails are blurry and scrolling through the album is virtually impossibe.
If i then turn of Photostream everything is fine.
Im using a late 2011 Air with 4gb memory and i have around 132gb of free space on the drive.jaceylucifer,
I just sorted an issue I had. When checking the photsteam box in iPhot preferences it unchecked straight away.
Method 1 on this link sorted me out in 2 mins. I have advised the senior apple care guy that was trying to sort this out for me. http://helpdeskgeek.com/help-desk/photostream-keeps-turning-off-in-iphoto-fix-it /
Hope it helps.

Since upgrading to iso6 phone is slow and unresponsive. Can I reset and down grade? I'm a complete technophobic and have no idea how to do this. Any help would be fab!
There is no legit way at all to downgrade.
Have you tried basics from the manual to help your issue?

ICloud Mail is slow and unresponsive
For the past week iCloud mail has been very slow and unresponsive. I've checked the iCloud mail server status and everything is okay according to Apple. If I use mail in iCloud in my browser, it is often very slow and sometimes unresponsive in the middle of my typing. I have to wait 20-30 seconds for it to respond so I can continue typing.
When using iCloud mail on my iPhone, it is very slow. Sometimes it does not load images in email or takes a very long time to do so. Other times it just doesn't update after I read my emails. I can pull down the list to refresh but it doesn't update and says I still have unread messages when I don't. A couple of minutes later it will refresh the unread number.
This has all just started happening for me in the last week. How can I report this to apple? It seems as all I can do is go through support and call them or have them call me. I don't have the time to do this when all I want to do is report that something is down or not working properly so they can look into it.Hello Scott,
as Apple states on the Apple System Status site (http://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/): "If you are experiencing an issue not listed here, contact support."
This is the only way I could think of to report an issue. -
My late 2009 model iMac is running slow, become unresponsive for 10-20 seconds, giving me the spinning color pin wheel. I posted my EtreCheck below. It shows that ProPresenter is clogging about 62% of my CPU, but even when I am not running ProPresenter, maybe typing a document on Pages or typing a link on Safari, it will freeze up and hang for 10-20 seconds and give me the color pin wheel. This is becoming real annoying. I also use it for video editing using Final Cut 7, and its obnoxious every few minutes it lags.
Thanks for the help!
