Ads caused by malware or adware extensions or plugins

My internet browsers are constantly polluted by pop ups. I have Adobe pop up blocker, but apparently these are caused by malware or plugins. I read an artical herehttps://easylist.adblockplus.org/blog/2013/03/09/ads-caused-by-malware-or-adware -extensions-or-plugins but

Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and AdwareMedic.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
The facts are:
1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
    protection against malware.
5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • How do you create an installer/bundle for PPro with extension, a plugin (export-controller) and some

    Hi
    As my topic says
How do you create an installer/bundle for PPro with extension, a plugin (export-controller) and some custom presets?
Assume you have Flash Builder 4.5, CS Extension builder 2.0, Xcode 4.5.1 running under MacOS 10.8.

I understand why you need updated running headers in your book. To a sighted reader these serve as a guide to where you are and help you find things quickly.  In addition, if you are exporting your data to XML or HTML from the tagged PDF it would also be important to have these in the proper location.
But for accessibility purposes, it doesn't have to be there because the screen reader reads everything in linear order, line by line.  No one is looking at the page.  A user listening to the screen reader read the page is going to hear this heading, just before the actual word itself. So they will hear the first word on the page twice.  It's not the end of the world if it's there, but such headings are not necessary for accessibility unless they are not repetitive and contain information that is not otherwise available.
So I would say, fine if you need them or want them there, it's just one word.
I think you should try exporting your book to PDF (or even just a chapter of the book) and look at the tags panel in Acrobat to see if you are getting the result you want.  I can't tell you exactly what you should do to get those results, you are using a plug-in I don't have.
I can tell you I didn't have to add the headers to any article at all, they just automatically export if the other articles in the file are added and you don't select the header style option "not for export as XML."
You may not experience the same results with your plug-in, but I think it will probably work the same way.
Give it a try and best of luck.

  • CS3 extensions and plugins to CS4

I installed Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Fireworks CS4 on my home computer several months ago.  When I first ran Extension Manager CS4 it migrated all on the CS3 extensions into the new Extension Manager.  But here at my office we just added Adobe eLearning Suite CS4 and the new Extension Manager doesn't seem to recognize that the old CS3 Extension is present.
Am I missing something, or do I now have to re-install all of my extensions and plugins for Dreamweaver and Photoshop?  This sucks!!!!!!
My home machine's OS is Vista, the office computer has Windows XP SP3.  Is that the problem?

  • Mac web browsing problem - potentially malware/trojan/adware

    Hi All,
I am new to the mac OS but i downloaded a torrent on the recommendation of a friend for MS Office for Mac last night onto my macbook air. It all appeared okay until i tried to browse the internet today.
However, every time i now open a session in Safari or Chrome, i get a number of additional windows popping open with ads for gambling, ****, etc. I have no idea how to remove whatever it is that I have on my machine. Any help would be appreciated as i am totally new to the Mac world. Even when i do a google search, the first 4 or 5 results are for ads and then i get additional pop ups opening. I have tried disabling pop ups, cookies, extensions etc in Safari preferences but this does not make a difference.
Some guidance would be great from you more knowledgeable members.
    Thanks.

You probably installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "VSearch" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot" or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the DownLite developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • I seem to have malware or adware installed with my latest update. How do I get rid of it?

Ads are popping up all over...extra tabs open with "surveys". I have looked at all of the support posts and nothing seems to address how to get rid of this. I even trashed Firefox and reloaded. Same problem. This does not happen with Safari. I am ready to trash Firefox permanently and just go back to using Safari. DOn't want to do that, I like Firefox, but this recent problem is truly annoying.

If you installed Firefox from the official Mozilla website, these pop-ups shouldn't occur. They are normally caused either by an extension, or an external application hooking into Firefox.

  • In-stream ads causing playback issues

I have been trying to play videos on the colbert report, facebook, and youtube websites and the videos are too bright or washed out after the in-stream advertisement plays (screenshot of problem is below). If I make the video full-screen, the video looks normal. It's like part of the in-stream ad is causing my video to be almost white. The sound on the actualvideo is fine. Videos on youtube that do not have in-streaming ads work fine. I updated my flash, took it off, put it back on. None of the usual ways to fix computer issues have worked. I am so frustrated. I've looked all over the web to find a solution but I either am the only one having it or I am not using the right key words. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Use Firefox instead, it's more Flash friendly than Apple's Safari
Apple is making life hard for Flash, thinking it can kill it, but 90% of the world uses Windows and is defying Apple and going right ahead with Flash, YouTube is owned by Google and Google and Apple are basically figthing a cold war over Android/iPhone.
Flash from Adobe which Steve Jobs had a rant against and made a public scene, is now just a common enemy of Apple, so it's best just to use the neutral Firefox browser instead, which happens to also be the best browser with the most add-ons and user control.
Also Mozilla updates the certificates faster than Apple does, and provides a popup window before a download occurs so your not a victim of driveby malware or trojans like the MacDefender, which fooled Safari users, but not Firefox users.

  • I want to uninstall ReloadEvery as I think it is causing problems however it is not in my list of Extensions or Plugins yet it is clearly installed, I tried reinstalling FF but it was still there! How can I get rid of it?

I installed ReloadEvery a while ago and it seemed to be working fine however I am now having problems with FF crashing and weird things like pages not reloading and not being able to use the back button etc
I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling FF and upgrading to FF 4.
When I upgraded to FF 4 I was still having problems even though I didn't have any Extensions installed at all, or so I thought. I noticed that ReloadEvery was still installed. I was rather puzzled as I had done a clean install of FF 4. I want to remove ReloadEvery to see if it will solve my problems.
I have also tried following the help on the FF Troubleshooting about manually uninstalling Extensions but again ReloadEvery not listed there yet I am still able to use it in FF!
I want to get rid of it!! I really need some help please.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
    "Clear the Cache":
*Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
If clearing cookies doesn't work then it is possible that the <i>cookies.sqlite</i> file that stores the cookies is corrupted.
Rename (or delete) <b>cookies.sqlite</b> (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookie files like <b>cookies.sqlite-journal</b> in the Firefox Profile Folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

Everytime I try to view videos on hulu and various other sites, or even just go to the youtube homepage, safari freezes up and gives me the spinny wheel.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Uninstall and reinstall the latest version of Flash Player Plugin.
    Uninstall Flash
    Install Flash
    Then repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • How can I get rid of Browser Highlighter? It doesn't show up in add-ons (either extensions or plugins), nor is it in Windows Vista program list.

  • Photoshop CC 2014: Missing Oil Paint filter and no access to extensions and plugins? Where did they go?

I downloaded PS CC 2014 a few days ago, and just opened for the first time. The Oil Paint filter is no longer listed in the Filter menu. Has it been deleted in this "update"? I hope not because I use it as part my workflow and have it as a step in many of the Actions I've developed to produce my signature style.
Also, access to my Extensions and Exchange is blocked; that is to say, Extensions is greyed out in the Window>Extensions drop down menu. This means I can't use my watermarks.
In order to use all the features of PS CC and CC 2014, I have to save my work and open it in the other version, then switch back again to apply a watermark. Very annoying!
    Any insight would be appreciated.
In Camera Raw, the button to toggle between pre- and post adjustments in the active adjustment panel has been reinstated, a good thing, but it should not have been removed in the previous "update".
    Thanks

this sounds like the files in your [[Profiles|profile folder]] that store the information about your extensions might have gone corrupt. navigate to your profile folder and delete the files extensions.ini, extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.sqlite & extensions.sqlite-journal (they will be regenerated the next time you launch firefox).

  • Lots of extensions and plugins were not compatible with firefox 6. Is this the same with firefox 7???

I have always updated firefox until version 6 which I uninstalled and now I have version 4. Version 6 was not compatible with several extensions such as adobe flashplayer, some java.... too many. Version 7 will have the same problems? I will not update my version if those problems continue.
    Thank you

Plugins (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) like the Adobe Flash player and the Java plugin are not affected by updating and should still be working.
Extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) like the Java Console extension have a minimum and maximum version and may get disabled.<br />
Extensions are provided by third-party developers and it may take some time to have them updated or the creator may decide to stop the support for the new Firefox version and abandon the extension like happened with the Google Toolbar.
