I am considering this product. I need a simple and relatively cheap way to convert my VHS tapes to DVD. I like the idea of saving the movies to my hard drive so that they can be edited before recording to DVD.
Is this a good choice? I found it on Amazon for $50.

What are you going to do with the footage from the old tapes? If you are not planning to do much editing, just a few titles, consider just copying the VHS directly to DVD using a VHS->DVD recorder.
It is not recommended that you import into iMovie from DVD source because you have to convert the footage from the compressed form on DVD to an uncompressed format to import into iMovie.
The best way is to use an analog to digital converter to go from a VCR to the computer. Or, you can use a digital camcorder as pass-through to do this. Or you can connect the camcorder to the VCR, record the VHS to DV tape and then import the camcorder's DV tape into iMovie.
If you want to make a long movie with chapters, adding lots of transitions, effects, titles, and audio clips, stick with iMovie 6 and use a converter or camcorder to get your VHS movies in digital format, preferably DV for iMovie editing.
If you just want to make a short movie, primarily for web posting, import the VHS footage into iMovie 08, using a converter to get it in some digital format.

Handbrake is the way to go.
Quicktime Pro does not have the ability to rip and convert DVDs.

Trying to convert video made in iMovie from Mp4 to M4v so I can burn to DVD downloaded Aimersoft video converter but not having any luck

I have downloaded a wedding video done on my iPad and put it in iMovie on my MAC. Have spent many hours refining it and now want to burn onto DVDs for other family.
When I did this same thing 4 years ago, I had one-to-one help at apple store and saved the video in M4V format and it was not a problem to share the video.
Now this video is in Mp4 and I need it in M4V - that is what the burning devise tells me.
I downloaded a video converter, but it didn't seem to make the coversion.
IDEAS?

It's a really nice program that converts not only your HOME MOVIE DVD VOB files, but AVI, MPEG, and others. You can set the CPU usage from high to low with five settings, it has a queue which you can add multiple files to, and it will minimize to the taskbar for compact convenience. There are other Windows programs that do much the same, but I prefer Videora. Oh ... and it's freeware!!

i just got AVS Video Converter 5.5 and converted my 'Scarface' DVD to MPEG format. i imported it to iTunes and tried to transfer it to my iPod and it says, "'Scarface' was not copied to the iPod because it cannot be played on this iPod." is it because it's MPEG format? i can convert it to MP4, is that what i should do?

You want to 'reverse engineer' the compressed mpeg2 DVD file back to something iMovie can use?
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

At what point is the video quality bad? Is it bad on capture? I would recommend using an s-video 1394 firewire converter instead. They capture the video at a higher bit rate. If you have a lot of 8mm tapes to capture, invest in a stand alone DVD recorder. They capture and compress in one shot. If you need to rip it back from the DVD into iMovie again, I would recommend using DVDxDV.

There is at least one way on each operating system (windows and mac) to rip your own dvds and then transfer them to itunes and finally put them on your ipod. A mac is the easiest of the two ways. If you have a mac, then you download a program off of the web called handbrake (just "google" >handbrake rip dvds< and its homepage should pop up or try <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://handbrake.m0k.org). Handbrake allows you to copy and convert your dvds to ipod format. On a windows operating system the most effective way i have found to rip my dvds is quicktime pro($25-$35). You can buy it at quicktime's website. It basically does the same thing as handbrake. I, myself, have simply converted some videos, like sports shows and commercials, to ipod format using itunes and both the video and audio worked fine.

Pocket DVD Wizard is doing a good job for me with DVDs, and it also converts other types of video files. Was ~$30. Very easy to use wizard system. Most all the others I tried were very cumbersome, two-step processes.

Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter. TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices). It does not show Mail or Safari menus. System preferences' display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution. I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access. Is there any way to make this work for us? We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web. Do we need Apple TV to do this? Or is it not possible with our old iMac? My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time, you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.
