Ads intruding on my browsers

I'm being bombarded by ads. When surfing the Internet, I constantly find myself forwarded to commercial/spam sites that I had no intention of visiting.
I just discovered that when I view a web page, certain key words (e.g. "save," "computer," etc.) in an article are somehow transformed to all caps and perhaps bold and are blue, indicating a hyperlink. They also have little green icons in the upper right corner.
Have I picked up some kind of bug or virus, or do the spamsters now have the ability to pirate other people's websites, inserting their own links?
To put it another way, can you see the links I'm describing on the following article? There's one in the very last paragraph and a cluster of three in the first two paragraphs under the heading "Desperate times." I can see them in both Safari and Chrome. Thanks.

Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

  • I keep getting pop up ads on all my browsers since I installed mackeeper

I installed mackeeper yesterday thinking it was an apple-made app. Upon realising it wasn't I promptly uninstalled it following instructions online. I think I managed to delete the whole thing (using the uninstaller), but now I'm getting heaps of pop up ads even though all my block pop ups are activated. I don't even need to click a link and a random ad comes up. I've never had problems with ads popping up unless I'm on a free video streaming site (which I rarely am, and even after I leave those pages I don't get anymore ads popping up). So I think it's got to do with the stupid mackeeper app that was installed. Can anyone help me out? I'd rather not have to install anymore stuff to prevent pop ups when I've never had this problem in the past without needing an extra blocker app installed.
    Thanks in advance.

If  you do not want to  install additional software, use the method given by Apple.
Removing the adware manually by following the “HowTo” from Apple.
       http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987
    Otherwise try this.
This app will remove existing adware. This will not prevent any future adware infection.
You can uninstall this app after using it.
    1. Use  free  AdwareMedic to remove adware
        http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php
Install , open,  and run it by clicking “Scan for Adware” button   to remove adware.
       Once done, quit AdwareMedic.
    2. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn those off and relaunch Safari.
Turn those on one by one and test.
    3. Safari > Preferences >  Search > Search Engine :
        Select your preferred   search engine.

  • Problems with Do Not Track @ Ticketmaster / LiveNation

"Will Do Not Track affect the rest of my Web experience?"
@ Ticketmaster.com and LiveNation.com users of "Do Not Track" in Firefox may be unable to search for tickets. Various error messages such as "Try again later" or 10 minute wait times are symptoms of this issue. Ticket search often will yield no results until "Do Not Track" is disabled.

Do you mean the built-in "Do not track" feature in the Options dialog, Privacy Panel? I haven't noticed that problem on Ticketmaster. The site is slow, and the CAPTCHAs are annoying, but I haven't been locked out.
When I look at TM's help on ads, it says:
"Some browsers have a "Do Not Track" feature that lets you tell websites that you do not want to have your online activities tracked. These features are not yet uniform, so we are not currently set up to respond to those signals."
    LiveNation says something similar:
"Our Site, whether accessed on a computer or a mobile device, is not at this time configured to read or respond to “do not track” settings or signals in your browser headings, which vary by browser provider."
Did you mean the Abine extensions Do Not Track Plus, Do Not Track Me, or Blur? Those work quite differently than the built-in feature.

  • Why Firefox 25.0 does not show Google ads and Facebook comments and likes. All other browsers do.

I've just upgraded to FireFox 25.0 and I have issues viewing Google ads and Facebook comments and likes on my website (wellfitstyle.com). All other browsers show Google adds in the right sidebar and Facebook comments and likes under each post. Great number of people in Eastern Europe (where I am) use FireFox and I would like to know how this issue can be fixed.
    Tnx.

    Hi there,
Starting in Firefox 23, if a secure page includes certain types of insecure content, Firefox blocks the insecure content and a shield icon will appear in the address bar. See this article for more information about the new mixed content blocker: [[How does content that isn't secure affect my safety?]]
To temporarily allow the mixed content to be displayed:
*Click the '''shield icon''' [[Image:Mixed Content Shield]] in the address bar and choose '''Disable Protection on This Page''' from the dropdown menu.
To allow insecure content to be displayed in all secure pages, enter '''about:config''' in the address bar and double-click on this preference, to toggle it from true to false:
    '''security.mixed_content.block_active_content'''
You can also use this add-on instead, to toggle the preference:
*[https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/toggle-mixed-active-content/ Toggle Mixed active content] add-on
You may want to do this only for the current session, then reset the preference back to "true" and check back with the site to see whether it's been fixed, since this is a global setting that exposes you on all sites, not just the one you care about.

  • Unwanted Pop-up ads in all browsers

Hello, guys! This is my first post. I've had two Mac computers in my life and never really had any problems until yesterday.
I have a MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013), Processor 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5 and Memory 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3 (I don't know what any of this means but its suggested info). I'm running OS Yosemite V.10.10.2, Safari V.8.0.3 and Chrome V.40.0.2214.115 (64-bit).
Anyway, since yesterday when I open certain webpages (not "serious" ones like Google or Facebook) I get layers of ads, mostly in Russian. I know they are not coming from the site because I've visited them before and it's always the same two ads, appearing on many sites. I'm also getting a pop-up ad from a "adultyum.info" site (very graphic ****). This happens on both Safari and Chrome, particularly when I click on a link or use the search bar.
First I checked for Adware using The Safe Mac's Adware Medic (it found nothing), then I checked with Bitdefender (found lots of Genieo, but they've been removed and the ads keep on appearing).
I've checked the Launch Agents folder, nothing seems amiss there. I couldn't open the Launch Daemons folder (Finder couldn't find it).
Then I installed the Adblock extension on Chrome. In general, the ads no longer show up but I got the **** pop-up once. Safari is another story, they all keep showing up, so my guess is it's something on my computer.
I figured out, since most of the ads are in Russian, that adware/malware was installed on my computer yesterday when I downloaded a torrent file from a Russian website: http://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3763287   (DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING FROM THERE). Anyway, the torrent file didn't open and Transmission crashed. Now I'm getting these annoying and offensive ads and adware removal apps can't find the source.
Is this some sort of new trojan? Has this happened to you and do you know how to fix it?
Thanks a lot for your help!

BTW, what is the "hidd" 1% in processes?
PS: I also checked on firefox. The ads are showing up too.

  • A bunch of ads have been appearing in my firefox browser; when I view the same page with other browsers they do not appear.

I can provide a screenshot to help illustrate my problem. Every page I load has numerous ad boxes embedded into the page from "Ads by Browse to Save". Does anyone else have this problem? Is this something that firefox added to their browser or do I have a malware problem? (I see no option to post a screenshot of the problem, as is advised on the community help homepage. Maybe I will have that option once my question is posted.)

I think I see where it is from your system details:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
If there is no Remove button, then it is an externally added extension and you may need to visit the Windows Control Panel to get rid of it. (But go ahead and at least disable it now.)
    Does that work?

  • Help, my browsers are been attacked with malware ads

I've tried already to scan my system, but this didn't work. My browsers (safari, firefox, chrome) are full with adds and links which refer to other sites. Please help! I don't know what to do!!

I'm the developer of AdwareMedic... I don't see that I have received any screenshots.
If AdwareMedic didn't solve your problem, you either have a problem that is not caused by adware or you have adware that I've never seen before. For some solutions for non-adware issues, see:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/unsolved.php
If nothing there helps, use AdwareMedic to send me a system snapshot.

  • Firefox seems to be my only browser that puts ads on my Facebook page. How can I stop this? I love Firefox but hate the ads and will use another browser until it's solved.

Whenever I open Facebook through Firefox I get pop up ads and such. I do not seem to get this when using other browsers like Safari or IE. It's sooo annoying!!! I will use another browser until it's solved.

Since you have encountered the problem at other sites, not just Firefox, I'd bet that it is an Internet Explorer problem, not the web sites. Actually, I am sure it is an IE problem.
Try running Windows Update, perhaps there are some updates for Internet Explorer that might resolve the problem. If you don't know how to run Windows Update, use the Help on your system to look for information on Windows Update.
If that does not help, use Google to search for information on IE9 locking up when downloading.

  • Other web browsers and security issues?

Since even an Apple KB article recognizes the need for an additional browser and because of Safari's limitations and problems, I'm going to try switching to another browser (most likely OmniWeb and am looking at Firefox, Shira and Opera also though perhaps not as a primary browser) but I'm wondering about their ability to keep on top of any security issues for Mac? (and how do you keep up with security updates?)
Though perhaps unfounded, at least with Safari, I feel that Apple has a vested interest in keeping on top of security issues (for Safari and Java) and I can readily find out about security updates via software updater.

Most of the other Mac browsers have their adherents. They are all good browsers (I have 7 browsers installed to test various web sites and for change-of-pace usage). They all have their strengths and they all have their weaknesses. Only iCab and OmniWeb are still shareware, the rest are now or always have been free (Opera just recently stopped charging for its browser).
I have settled on Firefox as my alternate browser and I use it maybe just a tad more than Safari, but I do switch back and forth between them. The Mozilla foundation is good at getting security updates out when needed. Firefox has a button on the toolbar to check for updates. One nice thing about Firefox is that you can install free extensions which enhance the features available. I have one to supplement tab features, one to control iTunes from Firefox's status bar, one to help me format messages in discussion forums, and one to block ads.
I prefer OmniWeb for doing intensive research because of the way it handles tabs in its sidebar, showing me which ones I've looked at and which ones I haven't, and giving me great flexibility in rearranging tabs, which are viewable as thumbnails or text names (I have had up to a hundred or so tabs open in OmniWeb.
Shiira is good and its fast. I have not checked for updates for a while, but the last time I updated there was still a problem with Shiira kicking you out of logged-in sites when you moved from page to page with in web site. This may have been fixed by now - they were aware of the problem back then.
Camino is a native OS X cousin of Firefox and is also fast, but is not updated as often.
I would stay away from Mozilla or Netscape unless you need all the additional modules they have and which take up hard disk space. Firefox and Camino represent the browser module of Mozilla/Netscape. Mozilla and Netscape have modules for email, irc chat, newsgroups, and for creating and editing web pages. Netscape is a branded and slightly customized version of Mozilla and is not updated as often.
Opera is a nice browser and some use it as their main browser, but I have not seen anything that really stands out for me, but that does not mean it is not worth a look.
I would stay away from abandonware Internet Explorer.
As for checking for updates, several of them, as with many Mac programs, now have a menu item that allows you to check for updates. Most of them also announce their updates on both VersionTracker and MacUpdate.
    Happy Exploring.

  • Safari (and other browsers) very slow loading "content rich" web pages

    Hi,
I'm a very "light" user of my mac, using it basically for surfing the web, uploading pictures and music, etc... and recently any web page that has a lot of content (examples are nfl.com, nba.com, nhl.com, mlb.com, united.com, continental.com) takes a very long time to load (most other web pages load normally). Safari (and Firefox as well) gets to the web page in an instant, but then sits there trying to load content (mostly high res pictures and ads I suppose), which sometimes takes minutes or just never fully downloads the content. I'm connected to the internet via ethernet (high speed cable modem from Time Warner), and they've already come out and verified that everything on their end is fine. I've followed the instructions posted on some of the other similar posts (emptying cache, deleting cookies, disenabling add on's, reseting safari, logging in as another user, etc..), and this has not helped. Since this problem is persistent with both browsers, I'm wondering if this may be an OS issue as opposed to a browser issue. If someone can walk me through a solution (keep in mind that I'm a novice), that would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    HI and welcome....
Since this problem is persistent with both browsers, I'm wondering if this may be an OS issue as opposed to a browser issue
    Could be.
Since the problems exist with multiple browsers, login to another user account on your Mac. Try Safari there. If you see the same behavior with Safari there, then follow the instructions here. You will need your install disc. The startup disk may need repairing. Even if Safari is ok in another account, it's still a good idea to check the startup disk. That way you can rule that out.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your startup disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 15% free space.

  • How do I stop popup ads in Safari 8.0?

Recently it seems that there is a sudden increase in popup ads appearing in Safari.  Each one has an "x" that allows it to be deleted, but they keep happening much more often than they used to.  Is there some setting I can make that will block popup ads?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • Does anyone have any suggestions for Ad blocking? I'm getting a lot of pop up ads while using Facebook from Safari.

I'm getting a lot of pop up ads. mostly while using  Facebook. I'm running Safari on a Macbook Pro running Yosemite. Does anyone have any suggestions for an Ad blocker. I don't see anything in the App store.
I can't swear to it but I don't recall this being a problem pre-Yosemite. I could be wrong. I haven't been real active on Facebook until recently. I see some third party apps out there but am alway wary of non approved software.
         Thanks

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Yahoo! Mail no longer loads emails and the ads are missing after having cleared Firefox's cookies, history, and cache.

Ironically, I made this support account just to ask this question and had to go to IE to verify.
Anyway, Yahoo! Mail use to work almost flawlessly before a couple days ago. Basically, the page loads like normal when I have a good connection except that the ads on the sides are missing, my profile picture is gone, the "fancy" rounded edges of the buttons are nonexistent, none of the menus work or open anything, and all of the links are useless. I have been searching for solutions for two hours now and none of them are relevant or useful:
    - Clear cookies = when I cleared cookies, cache and history is when the problem first started;
    - Disable Ghostery = I just learned about it today and so never installed it, but I also checked to make sure it wasn't there somehow;
    - Start in Safe Mode = the problem is still there and the only change was that it loaded the page faster;
    - Disable AVG = I can't because I can't find it anywhere...;
    - Disable Security/Change Permissions? = I think this was a suggested solution, but it already allows Yahoo! Mail to load images and set cookies while blocking pop-ups, location sharing, and installing themes/extensions;
    - Update Firefox = No. I like my old version. I keep hearing weird and annoying things about updated versions of Firefox, and I'm not going to risk losing everything else just to get Yahoo! Mail back
I started using Firefox (3.6.12) because IE was slow, but ever since I tried clearing the cache, cookies and history Firefox has been going slower. Oddly enough, all of my browsing history was not deleted because certain web pages (that I haven't accessed in ages) show up in the address bar when I go to type. Gmail works in Firefox despite saying my browser isn't supported, but Yahoo! never bothers me about my browsers and now its acting strange.
By the way, I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but right before Yahoo! Mail took the usability train off a cliff, it reloaded (because clearing the cookies logged me out), then told me the internet connection was slow and that I can switch to Basic for better results. I decided to stick with Classic and then it "crashed".
Anyone help with this would be appreciated. One of the reasons I switched to FF is because Yahoo! Mail was faster on it, and I'd hate to have to go back to IE...
    Thanks in advance!

As it turns out, many others have been having similar issues on other browsers. It seems that maybe Yahoo! is taking a much longer time to load or something like that. Either way, its been working on and off all week, and the same issue even showed up yesterday with IE 8 instead of FF. It still loads faster than IE 8, but again is spotty. Some people think the issue may be with mail.yimg.com or s.yimg.com, which I could see was the loading url in the left corner whenever Yahoo! Mail was refusing to work. A couple of people said blocking it caused the issue. Alternatively, some people suggested blocking it to solve the problem. Does anyone have any information on that? Again, I have no add-ons that would be blocking any urls, and my firewall hasn't any records of it. I really don't want to do anything to mess up my browsers more than they may have already been. Thanks for all of your help so far!

  • Spotify client on Ubuntu has started playing 2-5 ads in a row instead of the 1-2 that it used to be

I joined Spotify around Christmas time and have really enjoyed it. I had Premium for a while but then couldn't afford it any longer, so I had to go back to a free account. Now, I understand that Spotify's free service requires ads, and I'm totally fine with that, but I feel like recently it has gone from playing 1, maybe 2 ads every few songs to 3 - 5 ads in a row every few songs. I'm fine with having 1 - 2 ads every now and again, but having 3-5 ads lasting anywhere from 15-30 seconds each is really annoying. Now, I don't have screenshots of the ads back when I had to go back to free, but I do have this one from recently:  They ads are mostly 15 second ones, but I feel like the number has gone up significantly recently and I've had other friends of mine who use free accounts say the same thing. I know I've seen other people reporting this same thing, I'd really like it if you fixed it. PS: Mods, sorry about posting this three times. For whatever reason your site inserted a bunch of random javascript into my post AFTER I had created it (it didn't show up in the editor.) I've switched browsers, so hopefully it won't do that again.

    Yes. Here's what you do:
-Go to your First Menu page and scroll down to Settings
    -Select Settings
    -Select Playback
    -Select volume limit
I believe that should allow you to adjust the master volume so your overall sound will be louder when you are using your ipod. Goodluck
