Ads tracking my location despite privacy settings

I noticed that the iAds at the bottom of the AP Mobile news app all seem to know my current location (they show a 'distance to nearest storefront').
I have privacy and location services set so that this should NOT happen.
Settings -> Privacy -> Advertising -> Limit Ad Tracking is ON.
Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> Share My Location is OFF.
Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> AP Mobile is Never.
Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services ->
   Location-Based iAds is OFF
   Share My Location is OFF
   Frequent Locations is OFF
   Popular Near Me is OFF
Did I miss some setting so that iAds don't know my location?
Or is my privacy not under my control?
I realize that in general my privacy is NOT under my control (license plate readers, traffic cams, ...),
but if I'm given the choice to limit tracking, it should be honored.

Hi, Gordonbuckley.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would recommend going through the steps in the article below.  If the issue persists and your device OS is up to date, I would recommend contacting the developer of the app as this will most likely be the best option to resolve this issue.

  • Privacy Settings: "Ask websites not to track me"

When you select the "Ask websites not to track me" in the privacy settings of Safari, it states, "Select to ask sites, particularly third parties (including advertisers), not to track you. Some third parties keep track of your browsing activities when they serve you content, which enables them to tailor what they present to you. If this option is selected, each time Safari fetches content from a website, Safari adds a request not to track you."
Does anyone know how this "Safari adds a request not to track you" work?  Doesn't it send info about you anyways by having to enabling this feature?  -Do sites have to comply? (Is there law that business have to comply by -if one wants to opt out of being "tracked?")
Is there anyway to test if this actually works?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the link.  Informative.  I figured it was fairly new.  I hope there's more info out there that would explain it more in detail.  For example what info, if any, is my Mac sending requests not to track me on their sites. -And what services would sites need to be running, and if they would have to adhere to any law to comply with such a request.

    Hi Larakay,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to turn on the option to Limit Ad Tracking, but cannot because it appears to be grayed out. If this is the case, I suggest resetting your iPhone and attempt to turn on the feature after reset. To reset your iPhone, please use the instructions in the attached article.

  • Apps have no access to photos and do not show up in privacy settings for me to change it!

Hey Everyone I really could use some help! Ok so I recently got sent a replacement iphone 4 in the mail. I backed up the old iphone 4 and transfered that information over to the new one NO PROBLEM. I downloaded my apps no problem either BUT here is my question. My apps such as facebook, twitter, and instagram do not have access to my photos. When i go to settings > privacy > photos NONE of the apps show up and they also dont show up under anything else in the privacy part like contacts for snapchat to use (which doesnt work either). My restrictions are enabled and my photos and everything else under there are selected to ALLOW changes. I have tried resetting the location and privacy as well and still the apps will not show up under privacy so I can give them access. Its very frustrating to not be able to use the apps. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! Also i have tried deleting and reinstalling the apps that hasnt worked either

Make sure that you have Include Photos from Subfolders checked

  • I have an iphone5 and no apps can access my camera roll. When i go to privacy settings there is no option to turn it on. How do I get these apps to access my camera roll? I have tried deleting and reinstalling the apps.

I have a new iPhone 5. I am trying to get apps like instagram, facebook etc to upload pictures from my camera roll. When i try to get a picture from the camera roll it instructs me to go to settings - privacy - photos and turn access on. When I do this, there is no option to turn it on. All i get is a screen saying "apps that have requested access to your photos will appear here". NO APPS APPEAR HERE. When I go to instagram I get the message "this app does not have access to your photos. You can enable access in Privacy Settings." I CAN'T enable it in Privacy Settings. I tried deleting the app and reinstalling it and it didnt work. Please help! Much appreciated.

I'm also on iPhone 4, iOS 6, and have exactly the same problem. I've tried resetting privacy settings, turning restrictions on and off, deleting and reinstalling apps. Nothing seems to work. The lists of apps in privacy settings are all empty, except for location services. When using Tweetbot the app is regularly asking for permission to access my twitter account, but even when I allow that, the app doesn't show in privacy settings. When I try to go into the camera roll from the Facebook app, the app tells me I have to allow access to the camera roll from the privacy settings - which I can't do since the app is not listed there.

  • Apps not showing up in privacy settings, Skype not working

Skype was working okay, but today, when I tried to call someone from my phone, it said i had to allow skype to use the mic, but I had already done that. I still went to privacy settings, but no apps showed up there. But on the camera, while I had multiple apps that use it, none showed up either. In fact, tthe only privacy setting working right was location services!

    Hi SebaJK7,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, programs are not being listed in settings to use certain features. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

  • After upgrading to FF 7. When I change my Privacy settings to Use custom settings and check ok, the changes are not saved.

    Using Win 7 sp1
    FireFox 7.0.1
In Privacy Settings: When I change the FireFox will: to "use custom settings for history" and check ok, the setting isn't saved. After I close, then reopen the Privacy Settings tab, the setting for FireFox will: is back to "remember history"
    Thank you

You can try to delete the cookies.sqlite and permissions.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Director: Show Folder (Linux: Open Director; Mac: Show in Finder)
You can inspect and manage the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab via these steps:
*Click the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) on the location bar
*Click "More Information" to open "Tools > Page Info" with the Security tab selected
*Go to the Permissions tab (Tools > Page Info > Permissions) to check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab

  • Privacy Settings not saved

I am running Windows 7, 64 bit and Skype 5.3... and the Privacy Settings are not being saved. I cannot save the "Only allow people..." setting.
WTF is going on... I pay for Skype services and I am constantly being annoyed and interrupted by drone spammers.
I need to be able to SAVE MY SETTINGS.
    PLEASE FIX.

Before trying to isolate an issue, it's always best that one is running the latest Skype release. Which may in itself resolve the issue.
A new version has just been released July 28, 2011:
Please click the "Get Skype" link at the top of this page and download the normal version of Skype, NOT the beta version to get this new version.
This new version is 5.5.0.112 to check what version you have, using the main Skype client window please do:
    Help -> About Skype
NOTE: If this did not work, please right click on the Skype Icon located in the system tray, change your status ot "Offline" for 5 seconds and then change your status back to "Online" and then try re-setting your privacy settings and then clicking the "Save" button.

  • Everytime I change my privacy settings, it never stays which is an issue because I can't use Gmail since my cookie settings never stay on.

I only want to use Firefox, but for the longest time I've had to keep Chrome as a backup browser because that is the only way I can view my gmail account. I want to view it on Firefox, but a cookies issue won't let me. Every time I go into my privacy settings and change it to custom, it never stays. I will change it, and immediately go back to the privacy settings and notice that my last changes haven't been saved. I reset my Firefox to factory settings, as well as started my Firefox in safe mode and tried to see if add-ons would be causing an issue (they weren't, as add-ons are disabled in safe mode and gmail still wouldn't let me in...). How can I make my privacy settings stay permanently to my custom settings please? I would very much like to get rid of chrome and only use Firefox.

  • Site Circumventing Firefox Privacy Settings

The site FindTheBest.com appears to be bypassing Firefox's privacy settings, changing it to always allow cookies despite being set to block all cookies.
I've tested this several times and I've verified on other sites that the privacy settings are still being adhered to. I'm not sure how they can change the browser setting like that though.
In my last test, I deleted their cookie, removed the cookie exception, set a new exception to always block, blocked all new cookies, closed the page and re-opened it. Still changing it to allow as a new exception.
Is this possible? How can I control it?

But how is it circumventing Privacy setting of "Ask Me Every Time"? The pop-up never comes up, it just sets itself to always allow. Also, even the www. exception is involuntarily flipped to always allow.
I've just tested it again. Under Page Info when on their site, I set it to block cookies, then I refreshed. When I checked it again, it stayed as block this time.
Then I attempted to click "Default" the area went grey and the box stayed unchecked. I clicked it again and the box checked. After refreshing the page again though, no dialog box came up for Default and "block" was still selected under Page Info.
In effect, the same behaviour as always allow but with block now which suggests something is wrong with Firefox for this specific site and not malicious intent on the site itself.
I tried to reproduce this on this very mozilla page, but it behaves as normal/expected, as every other site has so far too.

  • Clarification on different Safari privacy settings

Recently I was reviewing the different privacy settings in Safari and between web searches and the help file I wasn't able to find the difference between these two settings.
    Allow from current website only
    and
    Allow from websites I visit
I tried both settings out and visited the same websites and it appears to track/add the same cookies.
I was hoping someone could shed some light on the differences between these two options.
    Thanks

    Hey there jnepp,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I see that you’ve already searched Help, but I’d like to share this section of Safari Help in case you haven’t already seen it. The information on the webpage below should clarify the differences between those privacy settings in Safari.
    Manage cookies and website data
Allow from current website only: Safari accepts cookies and website data only from the website you’re currently visiting. Websites often have embedded content from other sources. Safari does not allow these third parties to store or access cookies or other data.
Allow from websites I visit: Safari accepts cookies and website data only from websites you visit. Safari uses your existing cookies to determine whether you have visited a website before. Selecting this option helps prevent websites that have embedded content in other websites you browse from storing cookies and data on your Mac.
    Cheers,
    -Jason

  • Where is my Privacy Settings so I can allow my twitter app to have access to my photos?

I accidently hit "Don't Allow" when my twitter app said "Twitter" would like to access your photos. How do I change it so I can be able to post pictures on twitter?

Note that your solution applies to iOS 7 which was not out when the initial post was made.

The solution I found was: Go to Settings---General---and at the very bottom there is "Reset" Click reset to set LOCATION and PRIVACY to factory settings. Problem solved!

Hi I want to change the privacy setting for the Internet Zone from Medium to Low. Can't seem to find the right location in the GP. Can someone please point me in the right direction.

    Hi,
If we want to change the privacy setting for the Internet Zone from Medium to Low via Group Policy, please navigate to
User Configuration - Windows Settings - Internet Explorer Maintenance – Security
in GPMC. On the right-pane, please double-click Security Zones and Content Ratings. On the dialog box, we should choose "Import the current security zones and privacy settings" under
Security Zones ad Privacy and click Modify Settings
    to modify the level.
The article Ravikumar provided is very useful to us for configuring the settings via Group Policy, please also refer to it.
