Adump filling so rapidly in 11.2
I have upgraded 10 databases from 10g to 11g in red Hat linux. Now i can see lot of *.aud ( in adump) files are generating so rapidly in the test server.
So i manualy deleted them. I could not locate any special errors in init.ora file as well.
Same way i have another 6 databses in production server and upgraded in same way from 10g to 11g and file count as follows.
Test server file count 8,139,433 - 10 databses exist 3 months
Prod server file count 4,078 6 databses exist 3 weeks.
i have setup only audit_file_dest parameter for all the databases.
appriciate any comments or relevent links
I could not locate any special errors in init.ora file as well. I have never seen any sort of error in init.ora, till date. :)
What is the 4 digit database version?
Depending on the version, you may be hitting following bug.
Bug 8642202 Lots of audit files due to "Audit Commit Delay exceeded"

I have noticed that each time I mount a smbfs share the wireless network fails after a couple of minutes, and has to be reset. The log files seem to be filling up rapidly.
The daemon and sys log contain similar lines.

I need the query to identify the jobs which are filling up the particular tablespace .
Want to know which table get regularly get updated on the particular tablespace .What tablespace you are referring to?
I do not think you can find a script that list all the tablespaces/table and what processes are filling them. You can query dba_segments to determine the tables size and then you can start troubleshooting.

If you have issues with specific tables (i.e. growing rapidly) please post the list here.

CrashReporter working constantly and filling up hard drive
I noticed my hard drive filling up rapidly and through another topic I found out about WhatSize. This showed me I had a 20gb CrashReporter/mDNSResponder.crash.log. I then checked it out in Console and under system.log I discovered this thing working away generating this sort of message:
May 11 11:26:36 localhost mDNSResponder[28854]: mDNSResponder-58.8 (Apr 24 2004 20:38:40) starting
May 11 11:26:36 localhost crashdump: Unable to determine CPSProcessSerNum pid: 28852 name: mDNSResponder

...all the time, ie every single second! What is this and how do I stop it?
Thanks.
AlastairYes I've repaired permissions and restarted a few times. I've now turned the firewall on and this is the next instalment from Console - much the same really:
May 11 23:54:32 localhost mDNSResponder[23802]: mDNSResponder-58.8 (Apr 24 2004 20:38:40) starting

May 11 23:54:33 localhost mach_init[2]: Server d67f in bootstrap d03 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/mDNSResponder": exited as a result of signal 4 [pid 23802]
If it's of any interest I'm online via a couple of airport expresses connected to a cable broadband service via a linksys router which has its own firewall built in. I also tried turning airport off and the data still kept coming.
I am not sure what you mean by 'barebones' - tell me if there's anything you think I should disable and I'll try it.
Many thanks for your help.

Powerbook G4 17inch Mac OS X (10.3.7) -
I am unable to restore my backups from my Time Machine
MacBook Pro – My reformatted system that won't restore from my time machine - HELP PLEASE
I loaded Lion when it first came out and all my troubles started. (It was the same on my 24” iMac). Mail particularly hardly worked on either machine after loading up Lion but that's another story and I wish I had never upgraded to Lion.
I am now in China and took my MacBook Pro with me
To avoid mail problems I eventually used web-mail as all I saw was the coloured spinning wheel all day long otherwise
Gradually the machine got slower and slower and I saw that coloured wheel more and more
Eventually a message came up to say my Bootable Drive was almost full.
I checked and it wasn't full of MY documents. I see on this forum it's an Apple problem - reformatting and restoring user files will not help the problem
On 1st November I did a Time Machine backup that completed OK
Since then I had removed ALL documents safely to my Sony Vaio that we bought instead of another Apple Mac.
Despite removing ALL documents and emptying the trash for two users the HDD continued to fill up rapidly
I decided to do one more last backup on Time Machine so I could reformat the system – This backup never completed
I had to reformat the system as it was totally not useable by now
I had expected to put a Snow Leopard DVD in and restore my system without any problem - I have done this before on my iMac
I was unable to point the restore to my time machine as it has a WD lock partition and Apple restores don't recognise the drive may be locked!
No problem I thought, as I will do it later through the tools utility called Migration Assistant
I have tried several times with Leopard and Snow Leopard but cannot get the utility to work, as it is obviously picking up the corrupt “LAST” backup (This is a shortcut to the 6th November uncompleted backup
I tried to move the 1st November one to the last and move the other out as “”Corrupt”, but we are not allowed to change time machine files. Brilliant idea but Apple stopped it!
So, I loaded Snow Leopard and got it to see my Time Machine Files and restored first the Applications – No problem
Then Library – This failed as “You haven't permission” - What! Why? This is MY Laptop and MY files. Apple have to sort out this permission problem. I have had it three and a half years and it has driven me mad. It's a flawed way of working in my opinion. It took me three years to empty the trash because of it.
I then tried to restore the "System" folder which also has a library folder and that failed the same - Why doesn't Time Machine restore what it's told to? Is it because I called the MacBook Pro something different? It saw the backup files OK and gave me the option of the previous MacBook or my iMac that I also had on the same drive. I chose the MacBook but it would NOT restore the system.
Conclusion
So, I am stuck in China without my MacBook Pro and unable to restore my system and unable to retrieve the 1st November backup which was taken properly.
This means that I cannot run any programmes and do any work
I have wasted two weeks altogether on all the combined problems and without a usable system
Any ideas how to restore back to the 1st November please? Thanks in advance!UpdateAfter Advice from Apple
RESTOREPROBLEMS
I spoke from China on the1st December to a very helpful Senior Apple Technical person. He gave me my guidelines for a successful restore and we hung up.
Unfortunately, the backup hadn't enough space, so I repartitioned the hard drive and THEN followed his instructions.
At 6 am there was amessage to say it had restored OK (See screen-shot to say it wassuccessful) and so, I pressed OK to restart the MacBook Pro.
All I got was the same as before - a grey spinning wheel.
To cut a very long storyshort, I wasted the whole day trying to make a backup work to no avail. I came to the conclusion that this is yet another example of Lion not working, as I have never had this problem with Leopard and Snow Leopard.
I then got a screen shot of a message never seen before and that may help Apple ….
So, I sent them that screen-shot. Restarting did nothing of course.
Timeto stop the nonsense!
To cut my losses of many days wasted time over the last 5 weeks, I gave up trying to restore and as I have all the data safely tucked away on an external drive, Irebuilt the MacBook Pro with just Leopard.
I then put all theApplications back on one by one and it runs perfectly. Luckily I also had these with me in China!
Ablisteringly quick system on the old Leopard
In fact, Pages and AdobeCS4 are how they were when we purchased the machine 3.5 years ago -Blisteringly quick.
I have a mega large Pages Newsletter about China that I think was over 20 Mb before I shrank it, as it had many photos. This brought the MacBook running Lion to it's knees. On my rebuilt MacBook Pro running Leopard, it ran blisteringly quickly, even before shrinking it.
I managed to finish thenewsletter that I had started on the 21st October and we bulk emailedit out as a PDF 1st December from my MacBook Pro running Leopard.
In fact, the machine isrunning so well, that I think I will stick with Leopard.
LION
I always suspected the problem with Lion was it was constantly doing SAVES all the time that were in the foreground and not the background that I was unable to type in productively. My own opinion is that the developers had been trying to be TOO clever with Lion and for a busy person like me it crippled my productivity that went down by 50% and then eventually to ZERO %.
CONCLUSION
I would like to thank the Apple Technical person for his efforts on my behalf and felt that he should receive this update to close the case.
I stated that hopefully he can pass my observations to the LION TEAM Management or to whoever in Apple needs to see this feedback. The dozen or so problems with Lion have already caused us to go and buy a Sony Vaio instead of another MacBook Pro.
This anti-Apple attitude is by a person that for over 3 years was utterly and completely soldon Apple. No more, as Lion killed all my enthusiasm for Apple. My colleague as well. I asked the Apple Technical person to PLEASE pass this on! Whether he passed the report on I will never know! -
Hello all! I've been using GarageBand for a while now and I've accumulated quite a few files. Along with all of my movies and iTunes library, my internal hard drive filled up rapidly and I didn't catch it. I received a warning message on my screen one day saying that my hard drive was nearly full and I only had a few MB available. I'm using a 150 GB Solid State Hard Disk on my 2009 MacBook Pro (2.6 GHz Intel Cre 2 Duo, 4 GB of RAM). I remembered reading a while back that it's better to use an external hard drive for pretty much everything when using Garageband, so I bought one. I now have a seagate 500 GB, 5400 rpm external (USB 2.0) and I moved ALL of my movies and music over to it. I freed up around 60 GB of space on my internal hard drive in doing so.
So now that I've given you a little background, let me explain the issue I'm having. Before I noticed that my hard drive was full, I started receiving this error message:
Disk is too slow. (Prepare)
(-10001)
Upon receiving this message, I was unable to do pretty much anything in GarageBand. I couldn't listen to tracks, export to iTunes, or do anything! All I'm using GarageBand for is editing. My band and I do all our recording (and mixing) offsite at a separate studio and i just deliver a 2 track stereo signal (L/R) to my MacBook. From there, I just cut the individual tracks from a block of 30-45 minutes of recording because we just record our entire studio session and mix everything there. I pretty much never have more than two tracks and a few effects going at the same time.
After I realized that my disk was nearly full, I consulted my brother-in-law. He's head of the IT Deartpment at a major hospital here in West L.A. and he told me that I may have created a problem with the cache by filling up my internal hard drive and that I may still have issues with performance even after I free up space. He then told me that I may need to reboot my MacBook a few time to "free up the cache" (or something close to that, sorry guys I'm not that tech-savvy). It seems he may have been right, as I'm still experiencing the same issue. I rebooted around 10 times overall to no avail. I'm still using my internal hard drive to store the files that I'm working on (temporarily) because USB 2.0 is way too slow for my liking, when using GarageBand.
I've read quite a few articles on this offering solutions such as:
1. Do a complete Uninstall and Reinstall of GarageBand
2. Clone my hard drive to my external, format it, and reinstall everything back on it
3. Get a hard drive that supports Firewire 800 (The HDD I bought is USB 2.0, but it has two USB cables to increase speed, but I only have 1 port and I tried a powered USB Hub, but this HDD won't work with it for some reason).
4. Use different editing software.
5. Take it to Apple!
Will any of these things fix my problem? Are some better than others? Before I do anything, I wanted to ask this question on the furum to see if anybody had an easier (or cheaper!) solution. Any suggestions, tips, or advice would be much appreciated, as my band is starting to get on my case about finishing our CD! Thanks...Have a look into the Preferences folder (YourUserFolder/Libraries/Preferences/) and trash all Logic preferences.
You'll have to setup the program again.
cheers

Good morning,
Today I noticed that I have thousands of journald error lines in my log files.
Oct 15 09:40:03 localhost systemd-journald[10363]: Failed to write entry, ignoring: Cannot allocate memory
I did create the directory /var/log/journal/ which does have journal files in it.
So how come I am getting memory errors (around three per minute) if the journal is storing it's logs to this directory? Is there a way to solve this?
I am running systemd version 194.
Alternatively if this is for example a memory leak, is it possible to limit the amount of memory space used to a few MB and then bind syslog-ng with journal socket to store the logs?Hi Morrad & cfr, thank you for your reply.
I switched to a full systemd implementation around 4 weeks ago. I made the logs persistent by creating the directory in /var/log/journal/
I indeed used the syslog-ng daemon in combination with journald. Because I was not sure on how to use journalctl and did not want to loose anything so I figured better have it double then not at all, and learn how to use journalctl along the way.
As far as I knew everything worked fine, however when I accessed the console of my VPS (instead of going through SSH) it was filling up rapidly with these memory errors. Here I did get confused as I did put the loglevel=3 in my kernel paramters and according to the wiki things should not be logged to the console that way.
So next thing I did was check the status of journald by running:
[root@Yotta ruurd]# systemctl status systemd-journald
systemd-journald.service - Journal Service
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-journald.service; static)
Active: active (running) since Mon, 15 Oct 2012 15:13:01 +0100; 18h ago
Docs: man:systemd-journald.service(8)
man:journald.conf(5)
Main PID: 31859 (systemd-journal)
Status: "Processing requests..."
CGroup: name=systemd:/system/systemd-journald.service
â 31859 /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-journald
This came up with that everything is running fine and also no sign of these memory errors appeared. As the systemctl status option normally also gives a few lines of log file.
However in /var/log/errors.log all the mentioned errors were available and there were thousands of them.
To stop these errors I changed the journald.conf:
[Journal]
Storage=none
ForwardToSyslog=yes
ForwardToKMsg=yes
ForwardToConsole=no
This did stop the errors to occur and also the console is less busy now, although still occasional logs are being written to it, which is still weird.
So the server where this happens on is a VPS, I also have a small download server at home with Arch on it and also switched to systemd on this machine. I used the same wiki and did everything exactly the same! This machine is running smooth and has no problems or errors whatsoever. Of course this machine is more lightweight and also does not run as much programs and websites as my VPS one. -
Is FCP the best solution for me?
I apologize in advance for asking such a general "newbie" question to this astute group!
I am digitizing about 100 hours of family videotapes, and want to cut them down to a rational size by eliminating junk footage, as well as potentially making some finished movies for sharing with the family. The footage is all on an external drive, since my hard drive is filling up rapidly. Potentially I would like to assemble clips by person, as well as by event. I have used iMovie to create some basic movies, but not used FCP, and I know the learning curve is steep, a big disadvantage. I don't need a lot of special effects, and I'll qualify myself as saying I don't mind paying $300 for the software: I'm just looking for the most efficient way of dealing with so much raw footage, and potentally using the same clip in two different movies (by person and by event). I got interested in FCP because I thought I read that the software doesn't physically move the clips from my external drive, which would be handy considering my limited drive space.
I use a MacPro with adequate resources, except for the hard drive limitation.
Many thanks,
SamYou can certainly use FCP X to organize your footage.
I think the best course of action is to try for yourself.

Suspected memory leak in numbers
Dear All!
I am facing a problem in Numbers, which seems to me a memory leak issue.
The original problem occurred when I tried to process a data set consisting of 6 tables of 6 columns by 600-800 rows. A scatterplot with 6 series has been created using 2 selected columns of each table. The "your startup disk is almost full" was first symptom when I realiser that something is going wrong. I traced back using activity monitor that when I edit the spreadsheet the memory fills up rapidly. Once the memory is full the program starts to use up the swap area. I my case I have about 20 GB empty SSD space. After a few hours of work on this table the entire memory and the SSD was filled up.
To check whether the file is corrupted or something else issuing on I made a mock file to test the behaviour. I could produce the same response with a single table of 2 columns and 3000 rows of random numbers and a scatter plot of the this pairs of numbers.
Originally I have faced the problem on a mid 2014 MBP running OS 10.10.3 (i5, 8GB, 128GB SSD) but I have carried out the mock data experiment also on a 2014 MBA OS10.10.2 (i5, 8GB, 128GB SSD) and I have experienced that the memory usage keeps on increasing as I roll up and down in the table, just like on my MBP and in case of the original file. During the few minutes of the test on the MBA the memory usage of the Numbers application indicated in Activity Monitor shoot up from 70Mb to over 1GB and kept on increasing with every operation carried out in numbers, regardless the type of the operation. In this sense there was no difference whether it was rolling the sheet or saving the file.
The extra applications that are installed on both computers: Latex, and Parallels (but non of them were running during the tests)
On my MBP I ran a leak command in terminal for the Numbers and got the following result.
Last login: Thu Apr 16 14:03:17 on ttys000

I have searched similar issues on the net and on the community sites but unfortunately could not find any relevant information.
Any help or suggestion would be highly appreciated.Dear Wayne,
Thanks for your suggestions, I will definitely make a bug report. In fact I have already tried it through apples homepage, and I wanted to make a more specific one but to do so you have to become a developer... which would be a really bad joke.
However I did the mock experiment with 700 lines of random data in 2 columns and a scatter plot of the 700 points. The same happens. The memory usage of Numbers went up to 1.63GB... even higher since I have checked.
To answer your questions I have MBP 128 GB SSD of which 20 GB is free, RAM: 8GB
You see... my original problematic dataset consisting of 6 times 500-800 points has been plotted in a fraction of a second, handled as easy as in Excel, LibreOffice or Gnumeric (which are not intended for handling a lot of data; for that purpose I use Matlab or Python). So without any complains or extra effort my data points are plotted beautifully (as lines with no markers to keep the plot clear), but the memory is gradually filled up...
I am not sure it is the right approach to reduce the use of Numbers for very tiny datasets. This would mean that you were unable to make a chart for two years of data of precipitation or temperature or stock value or anything... sounds very unlikely. It sounds like you have a nice car that can go 280 km/h and reach 100 km/h in 4s, with the only the restriction that wheels are designed to fall off at 30 km/h without warning! I don't think that is the case. Would be very unbalanced performance.
Many thanks again. I'll go and make my bug report to get the wheels reinforced .
Peter -
I have gone round and round trying to figure out what would be best for our family photos, and I have come to the conclusion that I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. Here are the facts:
COMPUTER
iMac (circa 2006, white body)
1GB RAM
160GB HDD
Snow Leopard
CAMERA
Canon T2i (18MP stills + 1080p video)
USES
Personal use only
Family and friends
Family Events
Kids
My two basic questions are:
1) Which photo management/editing software should we use
2) Where to store photos
About question 1 - I think I would like to stick with iPhoto for most of the work and then use Photoshop Elements for maybe 10% of the editing. I assume this is OK and a tried and true method.
About question 2 - Right now I have all of our pictures stored on the computer's hard drive, which needless to say is filling up rapidly. I have tried to move the library to an external HD connected via USB, but the performance is pretty slow and frustrating. Should I try FireWire? Would it help that much? Is part of the issue my "old" computer? Should I plan on getting a new updated model in the next year?
Any input on this would be very much appreciated. I am getting frustrated.lets start with the version of iPhoto that you have - you posted in the iPhoto '09 forum - is that what you have?
1) Which photo management/editing software should we use
the answer you will get here is going to be iPhoto since that is why users are here - it is IMHO by far the best and most cost effective for home photo management
About question 1 - I think I would like to stick with iPhoto for most of the work and then use Photoshop Elements for maybe 10% of the editing. I assume this is OK and a tried and true method.
PSE works just fine as the external editor for iPhoto '09
2) Where to store photos
in the iPhoto library
About question 2 - Right now I have all of our pictures stored on the computer's hard drive, which needless to say is filling up rapidly. I have tried to move the library to an external HD connected via USB, but the performance is pretty slow and frustrating. Should I try FireWire?
USB should be ok but firewire would be much faster
Would it help that much? Is part of the issue my "old" computer?
Probably
Should I plan on getting a new updated model in the next year?
Probably - it wil have been five years

Files skipped when Server working on long job.
Using Accelio Jetform from 2001, unsure of version, to pdf xml files exported from Oracle Financials in a unix environment.
Currently have files going into the collector directory at the rate OF produces them one after another (@ every 30 seconds). Jetform appears to be skipping about 2-5% of the files without leaving an error record in the error directory. This seems to happen with greater frequency/duration during/after a particularly large document (ex. 40 pages) is being transformed, however it also happens at random times throughout processing. Any suggestion as to what is happening and how to solve it?Are you positive that OF is creating unique file names and isn't overwriting an existing file?
I suggest you set the logging level (verbosity) of all the agents that are running to
b -10
to get the most in the log file in an effort to see if Central or an agent might give you a hint. Of course, this will mean the file will fill quite rapidly and you could loose the pertinent entries if the occasion of lost jobs isn't frequent. -
Iphoto shuts down whenever I try to export
I am currently using iPhoto 8.1.2 and OS X (Maverick) 10.9.4. I recently purchased an external HD as my memory was filling up rapidly. I was exporting photos from iPhoto and about 1,000 went through and then iPhoto shut down "unexpectedly". Now whenever I try to export any photo from iPhoto to any destination (external HD, desktop, a file, etc...) the export starts and then iPhoto shuts down. I have been doing the exports by highlighting an album in iPhoto, hitting file, then export, and when it asks where I select the destination. It's strange because it was working and then just stopped. I have re-booted, ejected the external HD, but the issue remains. Do I need to bite the bullet and just upgrade iPhoto or is there a fix?
Thanks for any and all assistance. This is because iPhoto 09 is not fully compatible with 10.9.4 and there is no known fix at this time, except upgrading to iPhoto 11.
If space is an issue, why not just move the Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

UNDO tablespace reaching maximum size - WHO is using it?
My UNDO tablespace has been pretty static for a while but this morning it was at 93% and within 20 minutes I saw it at 98%. I added a datafile to buy some time, but is there any way I can identify specific sessions which may be filling it rapidly ?
ThanksThank you Pierre! I must have missed that particular piece. Mind you, it was a rather long thread!

This now works..

SUBSTR (command, 1, 20) command, SUM (used_ublk) undo_used

Do my apps have to be on same hard drive as OS?
I just installed a secondary drive in my G5 DP 1.8. My original drive is 80gb, and secondary is 160gb. Because of networking issues with Quark, I was wondering if I could install my software on the bigger hard drive.
Debra-- I am no expert, and I'm not saying Allen is wrong, but I recently installed a clean system on one internal drive, but keep most of my applications on the second internal drive (in its applications folder.)
This includes all the usual Apple apps along with their associated media (i.e. iPhoto, iTunes, GarageBand, etc.) This has caused no problems so far. Yes-- installing new apps will often only go to the boot drive, but there seems to be no harm in moving them off. You just have to tell these Apple ones where to find the media.
The second drive also has an OS installed on it, but I don't usually boot from it. My boot drive stays mean and lean, and that other drive is filling up rapidly.
Make sense? Am I completely misguiding her, Allan? -
Calls via voip and SIP services with Fring app for free to anyone? help
Dear macstrors,
I have been hearing that you can make free calls to any mobile phones/land lines with the application called Fring. On the basis of SIP.
I have been trying to set it up and register with a free sip provider but still no luck.
there is a demo on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saLf47VHI58
Can someone please give me a hand with this? You have to input a proxy and name to be able to make phone calls and im getting stuck on that.
this is something even bigger than Skype! This is free "skypeout"Hi, thanks for responding. Yeah, the TV supports a huge variety of resolutions. It's a HD set, and was auto-detected by the iMac. I even tried manual resolutions across the board just to be sure, and third-party software aimed at making config less of the nightmare it was and proves to be.
I gave up in the end. I'm fairly technically savvy and up for a challenge but got very frustrated and angry at how hard it really is to get devices talking to each other. I took the DVI cable back to the store and got my money back, the Apple adapter I will have to sell on as I didn't keep the packaging and can't think of any other use for it whatsoever right now.
It's extreme but I decided in the end I'd rather go for the comparative if pricier simplicity of Apple TV, the set up of which was a doddle but I have an outstanding issue for now with the remote controlling the TV's volume only in an ever-upwards direction while scrolling menus!
But I'm happy converting my video files to Apple TV format, as I only wanted to be able to view video content from the iMac on the big screen and for that the Apple TV does the job nicely.
I'd be happier if Apple introduced support in iTunes for multiple libraries across different hard drives that could all be synced together! There's a third-party app that allows more than one library but you can only sync with one of them. My music drive is going to fill up rapidly now I'm going to have to start storing videos on there as well...
