Advanced Replication using Oracle 8i and Linux

Hi,
My name is Sadhana. I am a software engineer. I have a doubt regarding Oracle and Linux. Well, I am involved in developing a customer care and billing solution with back end as Oracle8i (8.1.5)on Linux RH 6.1. I need your guidance is regarding the reliability of using Oracle on Linux as data file servers for critical applications like customer care and billing systems in telecom. The rating and billing engine will also run on linux servers. Only the client machined will have windows 98/NT. It will be helpful if you can throw some light on the replication features of Oracle particularly in Linux. For e.g. is it possible to keep a database server - Oracle on linux and a replication server on linux. Will it behave similarly like other replication servers (windows NT or Solaris etc.)? Is it reliable?

Replication between Oracle Server and MS SQL Server

Hello,
Does anybody know of a well known or reliable software that can do data replication between Oracle Server and Microsoft SQL server.
I suppose I can write my own version using Heterogenous Services in Oracle but I would like to know if such an automated replication between Oracle and SQL is available commercially.

Move all data from one database to other using oracle expdp and impdp tool

I need to move all of the data from one database to another. For that I am using oracle expdp and impdp tool.
I have the full database export dump file. I moved that dump file to my other database.
Now when I try to use impdp tools it gives lots of error regarding path mismatch,user not exists, role not exists.
As my datafile path of source database does not match with the target database path , also the users are not there in target database. I dont want to create all the tablespaces that in my source database as there are 82 tablespaces.Is there any way by which I can move my all data without using remap option for tablespaces or users and grants.

The FULL parameter indicates that a complete database export is required. The following is an example of the full database export and import syntax.
The user must have the privielge of EXP_FULL_DATABASE

Not able to login using ORACLE USER in Linux

I am not able to login using OS user ORACLE in linux,
I am getting following error when trying to login

Data Replication between Oracle 9i and 10g

Yes, platforms can be different, but recomendation is to use the same platform for both databases.

Oracle 9i and Linux

In the documentation of Oracle 9i database, it stands that it has been validated with suse 7.1 and patches.
I would like if anybody tried to run Oracle 9i database on a Mandrake 7.x or 8, ora Debian linux ?

I have oracle 9i running like a dream on Debian 2.4.9 kernel.
I had no issues with binutils etc. The trick is actually in
making a modification in genclntsh in the $ORACLE_HOME/bin
directory.

When the installation gets to the relinking part make the
following mods in genclntsh
(all on one line)
SYSLIBS=`cat ${ORACLE_HOME}/lib/sysliblist`" -L/usr/lib/gcc-
lib/i386-linux/2.95.4 -lgcc -ldl -lm -lc /lib/ld-linux.so.2"
If you use Redhat or other distro check /usr/lib/gcc-lib
directory for the exact subdirectory. On Redhat it is actually
called
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/.... and then check for the
sub directory in there. It might be 2.96 or some other number.
This was all I had to do bar from setting up one or two symbolic
links in the /usr/lib directory
The linking step was looking for libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 but
there was only libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 (which was a sym link
to -3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so). So I created a symbolic link
libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 to this file as well. (I think it was
this one)
Check the log files which ones it is looking for.
save the file. now run the genclntsh script. This builds the
libclntsh.so.9 lib.
Be patient it may take a minute or 2 .
Go back to your Oracle installer and click the retry button. It
should be ok
If this doesn't do it for you. click ignore for every window in
the Oracle installer you get and then exit out of the installer.
run the relink command (relink all) and check which files it is
complaining about. Fix them up in the /usr/lib dirctory
and relink again . If succesfull run the root.sh script as root
and you should be on your way.

2)E-mail address will be cretaed in Microsoft Active Directory (windows 2008 server) against an existing user and it shoule be replicated/updated in Oracle e-biz application User

Able to make dirty read using Oracle 9i and JDBC thin driver v 9.2.0

I've searched this forum and did not see anything to directly answer my question.
I checked the Oracle JDBC Frequently Asked Questions...
ditto (perhaps due to the fact that it was last updated: 22 June 2001).
So here is my question, and thank you in advance for any insight (apologies if I have missed finding an already answered question):
Section 19-15 of:
"JDBC Developerâs Guide and Reference"
(which is for Oracle 9i database)
downloadable from:

is entitled:
"Transaction Isolation Levels and Access Modes"
The section seems to indicate that
if JDBC connection A is setup with:
setAutoCommit(false)
setTransactionIsolation(Connection.TRANSACTION_READ_COMMITTED)
and then used to perform an update on a row (no commit(), rollback(), or close() yet) ...
then JDBC connection B (setup in the same way) will be prevented from
making a dirty read of that same row.
While this behavior (row-level locking) occurs correctly when using MS SQL Server 2000,
it is not occuring correctly with Oracle 9i and the Oracle Thin JDBC driver version 9.2.0.
The test case I have shows that with Oracle, connection B is able to make a dirty read
successfully in this case.
Am I doing something wrong here ?
Again, MS SQL Server correctly blocks connection B from making the Read until Connection A
has been either committed, rolled back, or closed, at which time connection B is able to
complete the read because the row is now unlocked.
Is there a switch I must throw here ?

I understand what you are saying...
that readers don't block writers in Oracle (the same is true in SQL Server 2000).
However, I don't see how my test case is working correctly with Oracle (the exact same code acting as I'm thinking it should with SQL Server, but I still think it is acting incorrectly with Oracle).
I have transaction A do this:
update <table> set <column2>=<value> where <column1>='1'
then I use Thread.sleep() to make that program hang around for a few minutes.
Meanwhile I sneak off and start another program which begins transaction B. I have transaction B do this:
select * from <table> where <column1>='1'
and the read works immediately (no blocking... just as you have said) however, transaction A is still sleeping, it has not called commit() or rollback() yet.
So what if transaction A were to call rollback(), the value read by transaction B would be incorrect wouldn't it ?
Both A and B use setAutoCommit(false) to start their transactions, and then call setTransactionIsolation(Connection.TRANSACTION_READ_COMMITTED).
Isn't that supposed to guarantee that a reader can only read what is committed ?
And if a row is in "flux"... in the process of having one or more values changed, then the database cannot say what the value will be ?
I can almost see what you are saying.
In letting the reader have what it wants without making it wait, I suppose it could be said that Oracle is holding true to the "only let committed data be read"
So if that's it, then what if I want the blocking ?
I want an entire row to be locked until whoever it in the middle of updating, adding, or removing it has finished.
Do you know if that can be done with Oracle ? And how ?

CreateEnvironment crash when using Oracle 12 and win32

I am just developing a program basically operates on Oracle database. My OS is win7 32-bit, and when I install oracle 11 and using occi, everything is fine.
But we want to use latest Oracle version if possible, so we installed Oracle 12 on a remote computer. I downloaded the instant client and use SQL developer to connect to remote database and it's fine. But when I copied the instant client files in my program and rebuilt, it kept saying run-time error. My code is like this:

It kept saying createEnvironment raised a SQLException. I thought all files' version should be correct (if not, the linker would report error, which I saw when I firstly copy the dll files in Oracle server - they were 64bit version). Could it be a collision due to I already installed oracle 11? I tried delete the oracle services, exclude my local oracle11 directories in PATH and include the oracle 12 instant client directory, but it still didn't work. Or is it a simply compatible problem on 32-bit OS?
edit: 1. Someone say it's likely to be environment variable problem, what's needed in instant client mode other than PATH?
2. I looked at the official OCCI document again (though it's for Oracle 11) and noticed it said instant client requires 4 dlls, oraociei11.dll determines if you are operating in instant client mode. Since I didn't use instant client on Oracle 11 so I didn't copy this file...I tried copy oraociei12.dll to my program directory (along with oci.dll, oraocci12.dll) but it still didn't work
3. I wonder if I must pass some parameter to createEnvironment because I'm connecting to a remote server?

Are you talking about replicating data in one direction? If so, in which direction (Oracle to non-Oracle or non-Oracle to Oracle)? Or are you talking about bidirectional replication?
Which database do you want to be the "master" (i.e. initiate the push or pull of data)?
What sort of lag is acceptable? Minutes? Hours? Days?

Database replication between Oracle RAC and Oracle Standalone DB in 9i

Hi,
We have currently 4 node RAC environment and Oracle RAC implementation with 4 Oracle instances. We want to move the one instance and make it Standalone with Oracle database due to availability issue. Thus we will remain with 3 nodes on the RAC database and one Standalone database. We want to implement Oracle replication on this solution, where partial database of RAC environment needs to be replicated to Standalone node.
We will have Oracle 9i database server for both RAC and Standalone machine.
The partial data that we are looking for replication are of size 25GB. Some of questions we have:
1. Is there any other replication mechanism apart from Materilzed view for this solution?
2. Is it feasible to sychronize around 25GB data between servers?
3. What can be estimated time for refresh or Synchronization?
The methods that we are evaluating currently for this replication are:
1. Multi Master replication
2. Oracle 9i Datagaurd.
Please let me know if we need to look for some other methods of replication also.

The methods that we are evaluating currently for this replication are:
1. Multi Master replication
2. Oracle 9i Datagaurd.DataGuard is not an option if you only want to replicate a subset of the data. The two realistic options are materialized views and Streams. Are you anticipating that you will be making changes on both nodes? If not, you can use simple materialized views rather than multi-master replication.
Since 9.2 is not longer covered by Premier Support, are you planning to upgrade to a supported version in the near future? In particular, Streams works a lot better in later versions of the database.

Can't mount database using Oracle 8i on linux

I am not able to mount an Oracle database.
I am new to Oracle and am working on an Oracle8i installation on an
Intel Linux Suse 6.3 platform. I am using only one harddrive and am
not using the 4 mount points as mentioned for efficiecy purposes in
the Oracle documentation..I am using the installation cd from Oracle8i
for Linux Starter Kit by Oracle Press. If anyone has this book they
can refer to pages 41-44 for the examples I followed.
As sysdba in sqplplus using the STARTUP command I can not Mount the
database -step 2 of the 3 stage process (Start, Mount and Open the
database) of opening an Oracle database.
I show the errors I encountered when I did the first 2 of the 3 steps
in the step-by-step mode (STARTUP NOMOUNT pfile=, ALTER DATABASE
MOUNT) in the sqlplus session and alert log respectively with startup
nomount and alter database mount for this sqlplus session.
Additionally I show the init.ora file lines referring to control file
which seem to be referred to by the sqlplus error messages and the
alert.log file. Perhaps some can give me some advice as what I can try
to fix this problem.
At the end of this e-mail I added several questions I had in regard to the control
files. Any help is appreciated.

My problem is accessing the database with sqlplus system/manager @oralin, on page 55 of the Linux starter kit. Do you notice the space here, between system/manager.. and.. @oralin. I think it needs to be there.
Is your database named Chestnut?
And for Startup, why are you using init.ora? the book mentions initoralin.ora on page 43.
Your configurations are different than recommended in the book. I'm not sure if any of this helps, but maybe you can help me. When I try sqlplus system/manager @oralin, the response is: can't connect to oralin.sql.
According to the book, I need to use @oralin at the end of the command in order to see if I have properly configured the server for MTS, a multithreaded server.
Any ideas? I hope I can help further.
