Advanced Settings to Improve Wireless Range (Fragmentation, RTS, and beacon interval)

I've got a WPA wireless network set up that utilizes a total of 4 WRT54GL routers as access points (on channels 1, 6, and 11 [the two APs furthest from each other both utilize 11). Each AP generally supports about 5 clients at a time (though sometimes as high as 10).
Generally, everything is working, but the clients furthest from the access points occasionally lose their connections, and some users have reported periods when they are completely unable to obtain an IP. I am virtually certain that this is based on poor signal strength resulting from distance from the APs and/or RF interference from other APs in the building. I have done everything possible to improve signal strength by router placement, optimizing channel usage based upon RF surveys, and upgrading to high-gain omnis.
This leaves nothing to do apart from tweaking the advanced wireless settings to marginally improve problems related to weak signal and/or RF interference, so I've been reading everything I can find on these boards and elsewhere about changing Fragmentation Threshold, RTS threshold, and beacon interval. However, I'm left with the following questions.
1) There seems to be disagreement about Fragmentation threshold and RTS threshold settings. Some (including the Linksys Technical Troubleshooting Wizard) recommend that both be set to 2304. I have also seen people insist that Fragmentation be set to 2306 and RTS to 2304. A few recommend 2306 for both thresholds, and some advise 2306 for Fragmentation and 2307 for RTS (though by my limited understanding, it simply disables RTS when the value is higher than the fragmentation threshold value). Which of these settings is best? And more importantly, WHY is it the best? Generally, I understand what the settings do, but I am reluctant to change them when there doesn't seem to be a consensus about exactly what they should be.
2) With respect to beacon interval, I've seen both 75ms and 50ms recommmended to replace the default of 100ms. For a network of my size (4 APs, averaging 5 users each), will increasing the number of beacons (and hence the RF traffic even when the network is idle) pose a problem? Also, I'm a little less clear as to how this would improve connectivity.
Since these settings will affect all users, I want to make sure that I'm using settings that will be beneficial on the whole. The last thing I want to do is inadvertantly make things worse, and since I can't test things directly from the standpoint of each user, I was hoping that someone could explain to me in greater detail what settings I should try and, more importantly, why.
Thank you for your help!

I changed my Beacon, RTS, and Frag values to the above values and now I'm unable to connect to the wireless network anymore. I tried to match the RTS and Fragmentation settings in my wireless utility (Hawking Wireless - RT73) to the new values, but I can't connect anymore. I didn't see anywhere i could change the Beacon number in the utility, but I wonder if that is my problem... Any ideas?
I have no internet, no network connection. I can connect to other networks in range, but even though the network with these altered Beacon/RTS/Frag values is detected, I cannot connect to it. I can send packets but all received packs fail. (CRC Fail, I think)
I can't get back into the web setup for the router, so is there anything I could do from my end? Find an adapter that lets me configure the Beacon setting?

  • 160N Version 1 - Wireless Range Degrading Over Time

    Hello,
I have owned a version 1.0 160N now for about 5 months and all was well with everything.  The range was better than any router I owned in the past until about three weeks ago when connectivity to my furthest outlying wireless adapters began to get worse.  It has been slowly degrading to the point that I cannot get a reliable connection unless the computer is within 30 foot clear line of sight.  Symptom is that PING to the router is not reliable and Web pages will not load even though the connection is made and maintained.  I was wondering if any others have experienced this degradation in range over time.  It is to the point now where I may ditch it and go get a 54G if I can find one.  Will a hard reset and configuration reload possibly solve the issue.  I also see that a firmware upgrade is available that is supposed to "improve wireless range" is available for the 1.0 version.  Has anyone done this upgrade with ill effects or a noticiable increase in range?  It is a total pain to have reconfigure all the MAC filtering and Port Forwarding but at this rate I will soon have a shiney, sleek, black doorstop.  Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Yes you can Upgrade the router's firmware as it would improve your wireless range...
    Download Firmware 2.89MB...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device: -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • Wireless Router RTS and Fragmentation

If I'm streaming video, does anyone know if it's better to have a large Fragmentation and RTS, or a smaller one?
My D-Link router recommends an RTS of 2347 and Fragmentation of 2346, but I would like the best performance for video streaming. Thanks!

well on the router's setup page, click on the advanced wireless settings... try reducing the beacon interval to 50, fragmentation and RTS threshold to 2304...also N transmission rate to 270mbps...check whether it makes any difference or not.
(Edited post for guideline compliance. Thanks!)

  • What is the definitive settings for MTU, Beacon Interval, Fragmentation, RTS etc

I'm getting frequent disconnects on my new E2000.  Particuallrily if I'm streaming video or connected to my companies VPN on my wireless laptop.  I've seen a number of other people have similar issues and the fix seems to be to tweek a few different settings.  I'm comfortable doing this but each of the "Network Admins" seems to post a different set of values that seem to be randomly distributed around some normals.
How can I figure out what are the best settings for me?
    Wireless I have
    -2 Laptops (wireless G)
    -PS3
    -Nintendo DSi
Wired which probably doesn't factor in but for completeness I have a desktop PC.
    Thank you

Wless problem is usually because of interference/interruptions which can usually be solved by setting a better channel.
    Try it first.
If problem cannot be solved by changing channels, upgrade the router
if all fails, you can change your beacons to 50 RTS and Fragmentation threshold to 2304

  • EA2700 - disappointing wireless range, can I improve it?

My new (30 days old) EA2700 has probably less than 40 feet of usable range without obstructions.  Is this normal?
I've got the router sitting at the end of the hall, and I'm at the other end without anything between and I'm at 11.0 mbps/'Low' on my laptop.
    What gives?

You may need to adjust your router's wireless settings. To read more about this and hopefully find the best way to improve the performance, please click the link below:

The "Advanced Settings" option in BIS is missing... I'm not sure if this is an issue with just Verizon or what? It's missing in the regular desktop browser version and the mobile version. Verizon didn't know what was going on and referred me to BlackBerry.
Side Note: I have the $29.99 "Email and Web for BlackBerry."

I just noticed that "Advanced Options" disappeared from the BIS page last week. The option has been there since I bought the phone a year ago. It was available for my Gmail account (which is IMAP), as recently as a month ago when I checked last, that I'm positive of.

  • Improve the range of my wrt320N router?

    Hellu,
How can I improve the range of the WRT320N router that is operating on 5Ghz?
The router is fixed and will not be moved.
Can I adjust the range capacity through firmware? or add antenna's?, bandwidth... etc...

As your Router is an Dual Band Router, and It can work on 2.4GHz Wireless Network or on 5GHz network. However different wireless channels has different significance to improve the wireless performance of your Router. Once you set the different channels on your Wireless Router, then you can set the security mode to WPA persoanl, as if you have  Windows XP OS installed on your Computer, As most of the XP Computer dosent work on your WPA2 Security, and Disable the Wireless MAC filter on your Router and check if you are getting connected to your Wireless Network using the 5GHz Network.Follow the settings bellow and i think this might improve the signal strength on your Wireless Computer.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...And select 5GHz Channel...... Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to 9 and Standard Channel to 11-2.462GHz...
SSID Broadcast should be Enable and Click on Save Settings...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 50 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2200 Change the RTS Threshold to 2200 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Clear SPA303 Admin/Advanced Settings

I have an SPA303 that was previously working fine with Ring Central then I cancelled service and tried 8x8, but they weren't able to provision it. Now I'm trying with another voip provider and they can't provision it either. We've ruled out the network as the issue. I told the tech that I had gone into the advanced settings with 8x8 and she told me that changing settings there could cause the issue.
So I would like to know if when you factory default the phone do those settings get defaulted as well? If they do not is there anyway to clear the admin and advanced settings to default? It seems totally absurd to purchase another phone due to settings changes.
Thanks for your assistance in this matter!

  • Wireless Range Expader for WAG354G (EU)?

How can the wireless range of my WAG354G wireless home gateway be expanded? It seems not to be compatible with wireless WRE54G.

I don't think so that WAG54G should have any issue with WRE54G .....
For better connectivity on wireless network .....
Change the channel on router from 6 to 9 or 11
    Under advance wireless settings .....
    Becon interval sholud be 75
RTS & fragmentation threshold should be 2306

  • POOR wireless range

I have a white 13" macbook which i bought about 6 months ago. We have the new BT home hub wireless router (the black V.2 model). I can get the network no problem in the adjacent rooms but as soon as i go upstairs i get nothing. Can anyone explain why my range is so poor??

    Hi sutton185,
    Welcome to the forum.
There are a lot of variables that can affect the "performance" of the range of your wireless router. Location of the router, interference from other electronic equipment (telephone, TV, radio etc) and walls are just some that immediately spring to mind.
In these situations, one of the first things I would do is change the wireless channel and/or the location of the router. If the symptoms still remain, you may need an additional wireless router (like Apple's Airport Express) which will be configured in WDS mode and act in extending the wireless range.
To change the wireless channel you'll need to log in to your router. With the BTHomehub simply fire up a web browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the URL field. Click on Advanced... in the left list and Advanced... again. The default username is admin and the password is admin again. Then select Wireless from the Advanced submenu on the left and on the right, at the top, you'll see the following menu items: Settings, Encryption, MAC Address Control, Repeater. Ensure that Setting is selected and from the drop down menu in the Channel field select a different channel and click Apply. You may have to experiment with different channels; try Channel 11 first and work from there.

  • WRT54GS2 as second router to increase wireless range

    All-
I have a primary Linksys router, WRT110 that works great. I am trying to set up a WRT54GS2 as a downstairs wireless to increase range.  I have a CAT5 running from the WRT110 to the WRT54GS2 and is connected from LAN to LAN and have them configured as follows:
    Primary WRT110:
    I.P: 192.168.1.1
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    Start I.P: 10 to 50
    DHCP enabled
    Wireless mode : mixed
    Band: Auto 20/40mz
    WPA2 security
    =================
    WRT54GS2is configured as follows:
    I.P: 192.168.1.2
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    DHCP Disabled
    Advanced Routing / NAT:Enabled
    Wireless network = Mixed
    Channel = 6 = 2.437mz
    ============
On both routers I have the same SSID and same security key.
On the Status page of the WRT54GS2 I have the following:
    Login Type: DHCP
I.P and Subnet Mask are blank.
Any ideas where I erred? I've read quite a few posts relating to this and can't seem to find the problem.
    Thanks!

Is the SSID broadcast enabled on both?
Is the device "within 15 feet" connected to the first router or second router? What happens if you switch off the wireless on that computer and then switch it on again?
What happens if you disable the wireless on the first router completely? (Wireless network mode to Off). Can you see the signal of the second router?
You could also use a network sniffer like Netstumbler http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/ to scan for networks. It should show you the signals of both access points.
What are your full and exact Wireless and Wireless Security settings on both routers?

  • Linksys E2000 - need to expand wireless range

I just bought E2000 router today replacing my WRT300N (since it has been broken). I'm guessing that they have the same range of wireless signal, am I correct?
If that so, can I extend the range just by configuring through the router?
I'm not satisfied with the range of my signal as of the moment
    Thanks a lot in advance!

How far you want to extend your wireless network range?
What wireless settings you have setup on your Router? (SSID, Channel, Security Mode)?
Login to the Router setup page and under the wireless tab change the following settings.
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to 9 and Standard Channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on save settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...

  • MacBook Pro wireless range has suddenly decreased

I've had my MacBook for almost a year now and the wireless range has been fine. However, a few days ago the wireless started going a bit dodgy - it would sometimes stop working and website would not load. But a quick restart sorted it all out.
Then, since yesterday it has stopped working completely when I am in my room (where it previously worked find.) But when I move closer to the router it works....
Does anyone know any fixes or would getting in contact with apple be the best option?
    Thanks in advance,
    SGreenUK
(Sorry if this has come up before, there are so many problems about networking on the internet I could not find one with my specific problem.)

    Thanks for the reply.
I changed the channel and then I did a proper reboot of my router ( from within the router settings) and it seems to have fixed everything.

  • Brush Lag? - Here are OpenGL settings that improve performance

For anyone having horrible Brush lag, please try the following settings and report your findings in this thread.
After much configuring and comparing CS4 vs CS3, I found that these settings do improve CS4's brush lag significantly. CS3 is still faster, but these settings made CS4 brush strokes a lot more responsive.
Please try these settings and share your experiences.
NOTE: these do not improve clone tool performance, the best way to improve clone performance right now seems to be to turn off the clone tools overlay feature.
Perhaps Adam or Chris from Adobe could explain what is happening here. The most significant option that improved performance appears to be the "Use for Image Display - OFF". I have no idea what this feature does or does not do but it does seem to be the biggest performance hit. The next most influential setting seems to be "3D Interaction Acceleration - OFF"
Set the following settings in Photoshop CS4 Preferences:
    OpenGL - ON
    Vsync - OFF
    3D Interaction Acceleration - OFF
    Force Bilinear Interpolation - OFF
    Advanced Drawing - ON
Use for Image Display - OFF
    Color Matching - ON

    Hi guys,
As I am having very little problems with my system I though I should post my specs and settings for comparison reasons.
    System - Asus p5Q deluxe,
    Intel quad 9650 3ghz,
    16gb pc6400 800Mhz ram,
loads of drives ( system drive on 10K 74gb Raptor, Vista partition on fast 500gb drive, Ps scratch on an another fast 500gb drive, the rest are storage/bk-ups ),
    Gainward 8800GTS 640mb GPU,
    30ins monitor @2560x1600 and a 24ins 1920x1200,
    Wacom tablet.
    PS CS4 x64bit
    Vista x64
    All latest drivers
No Antivirus. Index and superfetch is ON, Defender is ON
No internet connection except for updates
No faffing around with vista processes
Wacom Virtual HID and Wacom Mouse Monitor are disabled
nVidia GPU set to default settings
On this system I am able to produce massive images, the last major size was 150x600cm@200ppi and the brushes are smooth until they increased to around 700+ pixels then there is a slight lag of around 1 second if I draw fast, if I take it slow then there's no lag. All UI is snappy.
I have the following settings in Photoshop CS4 Preferences:
    Actual Ram: 14710MB
    Set to use (87%) :12790MB
    Scratch Disk
    on a separate fast 500gb - to become a 80gb ssd soon
    History state: 50
    Cache: 8
    OpenGL - ON
    Vsync - OFF
    3D Interaction Acceleration - OFF
    Force Bilinear Interpolation - OFF
    Advanced Drawing - ON
Use for Image Display - ON
    Color Matching - ON
I hope this helps in some way too...
EDIT: I should also add that I Defrag all my drives with a third party defrag software every night due to the large image files.

  • Ipad 2 Wireless Range Sucketh?

Ok, I love my new Ipad 2, but someone please tell me the itty bitty wireless range is not a hardware issue? I can only use the Ipad in the same room with my router or I lose all bars until the connectivity disappears and Ipad cant even find the network. I dont really need an Ipad in the same room as my laptop. I bought the device because it is small and portable.
Any clues on how to improve the range?
Realy disappointed in my $700 toy.
    iOS 5.0.1 on a fresh Ipad 2.

the range on my iPad isn't as good as my Touch, but it should be better than that. You don't have it in any sort of case that would block/impeed the antenna? as I understand it, the antenna is behind the Apple logo on the back.
