Advantages & Disadvantages of RAID and How affect Qosmio G30 speed

Hi.
i heard that setting RAID can increase or not speed.. can anyone more expert explain me how this works?
1.) First of all what is RAID (explain in words that an ignorant in computing like me can uderstand)
2.) What's the difference between raid 0 or raid 1 and how it affect the computer?
3.) What are the advantages/disadvantages choosing between this two settings?

Hi
Im not a RAID guru ;) but I have used the Qosmio G20 with and without enabled RAID technology and I did not notice any speed disadvantages.
I see you are a newbie and therefore I will try to explain the RAID functionality very easily ;)
So what is RAID? RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) helps to save data.
The RAID mirrors the content of the first HDD to the second HDD. That means that all files (depending on the RAID settings) which are stored on the HDD1 are also stored on HDD2. If the HDD1 will damage, you will be able to recover the whole content from the HDD2.
The two HDDs can be used with RAID-1 mirroring or RAID-0 stripping
When using RAID-1 the data is stored twice (once on each of the HDDs) so if there are problems with one of the HDDs, the other HDD can be used to recover the data.
But you can use the both HDDs only as a single HDD. (2 HDDs = 1 HDD)
When using RAID-0 (stripping) the size seen by the OS is twice!
Using the RAID-0 configuration, all data on both disks will be lost, even if only one of the two disks fails!!!
I think the RAID is very useful because it safes the HDD content!
Of course, if you use the mirroring option you can use only the one available HDD!!!
But you are on the safe site ;)

  • Advantage/disadvantage in OS and Oracle clustering

    Dear DBAs
i need to know what are the advantages and disadvantages in using Oracle clustering instead of OS clustering.
I will be thankfull if you can provide a table (advantage/disadvantage) for each case.
The OS is windows 2003 and the database is 10g
    Thx in advance
    Regards

One advantage could be you don't need to buy OS clusterware as it comes bundled with Oracle 10g.
So Cost benifit is One of the advantage.

  • Windows Vista 64 Bit and Button Support - Qosmio G30?

Windows Vista 64 Bit and Button Support?

Everybody claiming that Vista x64 (or Ultimate) can't be used with FN keys or Flash Cards is utterly wrong!
I have a Qosmio G30 running Vista x64 Ultimate, and have both FN keys, Toshiba Flash Cards and (partly) the hardware buttons at the top working.
After a lot of research, I found that Toshiba has released a 64-bit version of VAP called util_tvap_27581D. If you google it, you might discover it...

  • Need help with my Toshiba remote control and receiver for Qosmio G30 161

    Hello to all
I have a Toshiba Qosmio G30-161 and with it I have a Toshiba remote control and a Toshiba remote control receiver, this is the first time I have used it (tried to that is), my problem is the remote is not working on the computer when I press any program buttons the computer does nothing.
I have installed four brand new AA batteries and the remote works fine its sending signals to the receiver, the receiver the detecting the remote as a red light appears every time you press a button and as for the computer I have checked the drivers and the USB is picking up the receiver as a E-home remote receiver which I have checked with Toshiba and that is correct, so all in all the remote is working, the receiver is picking up signals and the pc has detected the receiver but nothing works, I have installed remote control manager but this still has done anything. I have spoken to Toshiba help and support and the end result is they are not sure what the problem is. Can anyone help I require the remote for slideshows for customers as I??m a photographer.
Also to confirm I am running Windows XP MCE addition.

    Hi there,
this remote contol works, if you use it without any special drivers and special software, only in the Media Center.
But if you install such stuff like [WinLirc|winlirc.sourceforge.net] then you should be able to get some functions for your presentation.
Please try this tool and check if it works.
By the way: If I were you I would first read the Manual and FAQ of WinLirc before starting because its a little bit tricky to handle the program. :) (Too many settings :D)

  • whats Raid and how do i go about it???

    I got
    160 2nd internal disk
    +
    160 Lacie external disk
    +
    300GB Maxtor external disk
is it possible to do this raid thing?
if you can, what are the advantages and disadvantages
is it going to course trouble when one disk is off?
will they be read as one?
    stash

    Hi Stash,
It is possible to Raid those disks, but you must not RAID the System disk if you do it you loose the Applecare, Apple will not support your configuration
I don't know if Apple Raid software allow to do this but it can be done with SoftRaid (www.softraid.com) I use it.
if you can, what are the advantages and disadvantages
The theory is you will be able to have more EXS voices, will be able to read more tracks....
But you have in the chain 2 external disk and an internal disk so I don't know what will happens. May be you can speak to Mark at Softraid he is very helpful and may he has a client with your configuration
is it going to course trouble when one disk is off?
will they be read as one?
It depends what kind of Raid (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,10,50,0+1) you use
    Raid 0 :
    - for fast read
    - your volume size are added :
-- with Apple raid you will have 3x160 GB (140 GB are lost)
-- With Softraid raid you will have a raid of 620 GB
if you lose one disk you lose all your data
The Raid 0 must be backed up very often or you use it only to put your libs of samples (my case)
Raid 1 is for security ; your data are duplicated on 2 drives, so you do not need to do any backups ! (this in theory !!!)
There are other type of Raid but I have not used it ( you can combine raid 0 and raid 1)

  • After recovery the second HDD is not visible - Qosmio G30

    Hello
I have Qosmio G30 and i use the recovery cd and i lose the 2 hdd
The 2 Hdd is not shown in my computer and every time i restart the system tell need mirroring.
    So ineed some help plz
    thx

    Hi
I presume your RAID settings are set to mirroring (RAID-1) and not to stripping (RAID-0)
The RAID settings can be changed in the BIOS on the 3rd page.
    Please check this.
But note; if you would change the RAID settings then you would lose the whole data stored on the HDD.
PS: Check you user manual. There is a useful info about RAID and how to use it.
    Best regards

  • Qosmio G30 - New CD/DVD drive doesn't work properly

    Hiya all
I'm hoping someone can help me. I have had to replace my TS-L802A drive with another of the same model, except that when I replaced the drive I have problems booting from CD and the laptop (Qosmio G30) rejects it by saying CD-ROM error on startup.
I managed to install the operating system from a flash drive and it works fine except for the cd rom side of things. Do I need to flash the drive in order for the laptop to recognise it? If so how do I go about doing this. I'm thinking that the chipset for the optical drive is set as slave or something and not master.
    Please help!

the drive wont show in the bios, the bios is wierd, it wont show the model number or name of any devices. is there a difference between a setup and the bios or are they the same thing. i cant configure anything. i have my old drive working at the moment but its badly damaged although it still reads disks hence the reason i managed to install an operating system. are there certain drives set as master/ cselect/ slave if so is there a way to flash the drive to make it work with my toshiba qosmio g30. or can i swap the chipsets on the optical drive by disassembling the casing and swapping them over. i just want the thing fixed. thanks please help!!!

  • Qosmio G30: How to add the RAID driver without a floppy drive?

I am going to set win xp tomorrow, as far as i remember i will be promted to insert a floppy with additional RAID/SCSI drivers - i guess i need to supply some drivers for XP to see my RAID stripe.
I was able to download 'raid-drv-qog20-xp-1380.zip' but i am afraid to look if my laptop has a floppy drive... How do i add the drivers without a floppy drive?

    Hi
Maybe stupid comment but if you can buy Qosmio G30 I presume you can also obtain one used floppy. I have done this few times with Vista and Qosmio G30 and it works well.
Check eBay. You will get used floppy drive for few euros. Otherway try to create CD and if the RAID drive is needed browse to ODD, I didnt try it because I have FDD but you can test it on your Qosmio.

  • Qosmio G30-126: how to connect analog TV and satellite TV simultaneously

Hi, I have a Qosmio G30-126 and have a problem with simultaneous receiving analog TV (by TV-in port in built-in TV tuner) and satellite channels from satellite set-top-box (by AV-in ports).
I can programm Windows Media Center for analog TV (but without satellite STB) by antenna TV-in port and it works perfectly.
I can programm Windows Media Center for digital channels from satellite STB (but without analog TV) by AV-in ports and it works perfectly.
But i can't program Windows Media Center for both analog TV i satellite STB, because during programming WMC forces me to choose between analog TV or satellite decoder and doesn't allow me to choose two signal sources.
For me it is a big problem, because I have cable TV (analog) and satellite STB with digital channels. And I want to watch on my Qosmio all channels.
    Could anyone help me?

    >... because during programming WMC forces me to choose between analog TV or satellite decoder and doesn't allow me to choose two signal sources.
I think in this statement you answered your question. I had Qosmio G30 long time ago and i also know that WMC cannot handle with two signal sources at the same time.
To confirm this contact Microsoft and ask them. I mean they have designed WMC and know how it works exactly.
Toshiba has just offered proper hardware (TV tuner) to offer TV option on this notebook.

  • How to GET RID of RAID and get back to IDE??

    Hi,
I have a great Z800 Workstation with a 1.5TB HDD running Win7Pro-64. I've been using an 128GB SSD cache (Synapse/Dataplex) for about a year with no trouble, but stupidly thought that Intel's RST (Rapid Storage Technology) would do a better job, for writing in particular. So I installed RST... and run into touble.
RST put the two disks into a RAID... but since the disks are not the same geometry, and I appear to have an old chipset, it never actually worked: RST was unable to create a cache (i.e. to accelerate the HDD with the SSD) and the SSD became useless, as its Dataplex conroller clashed with the RAID.
In short, I would like to GET RID of the RAID (in view to replace the HDD by an SSD altogether)... but that appears to be impossible: I uninstalled RST and followed the "removdrv.txt" advice to switch (back) from RAID to IDE in the machine Setup... but Windows BSODs unless I keep RAID. Yes, I tried any and every "Repair" options Win7 could offer.
So my question is: how can I get rid of the (fake/useless) RAID and get back to IDE?
    Many thanks for your advice!

I have some bad news for you.
If there is an actual RAID configuration present, then there is no turning back.
Breaking a RAID set destroys data on the set and makes it unbootable. That is why you are seeing the BSOD. If you kep playing with it, eventually it won't even boot up in RAID.
That means starting again from scratch with a new OS install.

  • I just purchased an extreme.  I have an express.  The sales guy recommended setting up a hot spot with the express and use the extreme as a base station.  What does he mean and how do I do this?  What are the advantages?

I just purchased an extreme.  I have an express.  The sales guy recommended setting up a hot spot with the express and use the extreme as a base station.  What does he mean and how do I do this?  What are the advantages?  How do I set this up?????

I think he means to set up the main extreme as the main router or "main base station", and then use the express to "extend" the network.
You can look up the manual for your express here for more details:
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/
Extend the range of your network by adding AirPort Express to your existing AirPortExtreme or AirPort Express wireless network (this is called a Wireless DistributionSystem, or WDS). "
Extending the Range of an Existing AirPort Extreme or
    AirPort Express Network
You can extend the range of an existing AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express wirelessnetwork by setting it up in a WDS. Wireless computers can connect to the network andshare the Internet connection, share files, and play network games. If you connect yourAirPort Express to your home stereo, computers on your wireless network can useAirTunes to play music on the stereo from iTunes. If you connect a USB printer to yourAirPort Express, all of the computers on the network can print to it.
n Open the AirPort Setup Assistant on a Macintosh, or the AirPort Express Assistant on acomputer using Windows XP. Follow the onscreen instructions to extend the range ofyour AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express network.
Note: Extending the range of a network using WDS may reduce overall networkperformance.
