Advantages IMAP has over POP?

Hello everyone. I'm from the UK and have a Gmail account (not google mail, I had my account during beta) and I managed to enable IMAP by changing my language from English UK to English US. What advantages over POP do I have? I find it harder to delete emails. Especially spam as I have to delete from spam and then delete them again in the trash. Is there a better and faster way of doing this. Plus could my IPhone catch any viruses by accidently opening spam? I delete emails the fast was by swiping over them and I accidently open them but then I go out of the spam message as quickly as possible.

IMAP maintains the master copy of all messages on the server. You can either view and organize them online with a web client such as squirrelmail or gmail or sync your local clients to the server. The difference from POP3 is that the clients sync both ways with the server. So if you delete a message from one client it will be deleted from the server, and then from the other clients the next time they sync. Once synced there is a local copy on the client, so you can view it without a network connection. If you send a message or reply and you don't have a connection the client will wait for a connection to send. Similarly for deletes and moves.
One big advantage is that you can create folders on the server. The folder structure will also sync to the clients, so a folder added on one client will appear on the others. Moving an item from the inbox (or a folder) to another folder will be treated as a delete from inbox and add to the selected folder.
Given all of this, the iPhone client is not fully compliant. In particular, if you delete a message on the iPhone it will NOT be deleted from the server. It was in the first release, but I think this confused so many people (who thought they were just deleting a local copy) that they changed the behavior. You also cannot add or remove a folder on the iPhone. You must do it with a full client (like Outlook or Mac mail). Unlike a desktop client, the iPhone does not automatically update all folders on a sync; only Inbox, Sent and Trash. Other folders are updated only when you open them. I think this is intended as a feature; if I were to sync the 1 GB I have in all my folders it would take a week, so I am happy with it. I just wish the mail app had more options, so I could choose behaviors such as this.
Regarding your spam questions, there's no harm in leaving them in trash; there is a setting that will empty trash after a period of time you specify. Contrary to the FUD spread by antivirus companies you cannot "catch" a virus by opening an email. You must then execute something in the email to catch the virus, like click a link or run an attachment. And even then, there are NO viruses that can infect an iPhone at this time. The one vulnerability that the phone had has been fixed. Even it required opening a TIFF image in the email.
The last point about spam is that the overwhelming majority of spam messages are just trying to sell you something, not infect your computer.

  • Advantages of BPC over BI-IP

    Dear All,
    I am new to BPC NW and would like your expert views on some of my observations on the much debated advantages of BPC over BI IP.
    One of the benefits of BI IP was the integrated reporting capabilities with a common master data and combining the transaction data (actual and budget).  However, as I understand BPC is intentionally not integrated with backend BW.
    BW master data is different and separate from BPC master data, thus it is not possible to integrate BPC cubes with BW cubes. To view an actual vs plan comparison, data would need to be copied / loaded back and forth between the BW cubes and BPC cubes. However, it does not seem practical in scenarios where planning requires significant amount of actual data.  Moreover, this would mean multiple reporting interfaces for the users.
    BPC will be driven by Business users.
    What is it that we are empowering the business users with?  The ability to define his own dimensions / applications/ dimension members / Input schedules?
    Usually planning requirement is not just a simple input enabled screen. There are many more functionalities that would be required which would need writing of logic, code etc. Loading of master / transaction data requires creation of transformation, conversion files and data packages.  Obviously, these tasks would not be done by the business users.
    To be honest, I am slightly concerned over giving the business user a free reign on creating objects in the system. Without proper training, things could get out of hand with duplicate objects popping up everywhere in the system.  Another area of concern is possibility of modeling same data differently in BPC and BW. It might cause complexities while integrating the data between the two
    BPC seem to be targeted to facilitate financial planning. However, we require planning for areas outside finance (headcount, volume allocation / distribution etc).  I would have assumed that a reporting application of Type u2018Genericu2019 would have the flexibility to include only the required dimensions  as opposed to having to include the standard dimensions of type A, E, T and C.
    When compared to BI IP, I am not sure if BPC NW in its current form would be the best tool to deliver integrated planning in multiple areas.
    Having said that, these are still early days for BPC NW. Hopefully we will see a tighter integration of BPC NW with BW  and more flexible planning in non-financial areas in the future releases.

    Thank you for your statement regarding the issues of using BPC in the context of BW.  I very much appreciate your excellent comments.
    Also thank you for providing the link to the statement about the advantages of using BPC because of the Excel user interface.  It certainly does appear that SAP marketing is trying to get customers to move to Business Objects and BPC.  Of course, it would be a strong advantage to be able to leverage the existing skills of Excel users.
    We already own Integrated Planning and it appears to satisfy the immediate business requirements.  We would have to pay for the software licences for BPC, which we don't currently own.  Of course, we don't want to pay for these BPC licenses when we already own the IP licenses that will satisfy the requirements.
    In addition, it indeed looks as though SAP is positioning BPC to use the Business Objects universe.  Although we know that, eventually, we will probably have to convert to selected components of Business Objects for business intelligence, we don't want to have to once again make another substantial investment in SAP business intelligence when we so recently made such a large investment in the SAP Business Information Warehouse.  We will have not yet earned our return on investment on the Business Informastion Warehouse.
    Given the timing, we don't think it is fair that SAP expects companies to once again have to pay for the business intelligence software and to implement Business Objects, convert from the Business Information Warehouse to Business Objects, redevelop, retrain, and redeploy all the reports using the Business Objects tools.  The customers will incur additional costs because of the reimplementation, conversion, redevelopment, retaining, and redeployment of the reports.  Without this kind of consideration, in these economic times, it will be difficult for the installed base of companies to justify the conversion to Business Objects, and, consequently, for SAP to realize a reasonable return on its, not insignificant, investment in Business Objects.
    SAP should provide an existing customer of the components of the Business Information Warehouse a migration path to the corresponding Business Objects components of comparable capabilities at no additional license fee as long as the customer is current on its maintenance.  Of course, adjustments in the license fees and annual maintenance fees should be made if there are differences in functional and/or quality capabilities between the corresponding components of the Business Information Warehouse and Business Objects.
    In our situation, we already and recently made a significant investment in the Business Information Warehouse and the Business Explorer (BEx) tools, implementation, and reports development.  We don't want to have to pay to replace them with Business Objects.  We thought we already paid big-time for the business intelligence tools and reports.  We even paid for the BI Accelerator and have been very happy with its dramatic improvement on performance.  We fear that a commitment to BPC may soon commit us to Business Objects, the latter of which, so far, carries a very large price.

  • Advantages of java over c++

    Hello to all.
    Can you please point me out some advantages on using java instead of C++?
    For example having the garbage collector (java) instead of cancelling by hand the objects created (c++) slows down a little the execution of the program but prevents of cancelling object still in use.
    What about the impossibility of multi-inheritance and overloading of the operators?
    The fact that there are no header files has an advantage?
    Is it true that thread priorities and scheduling are not portable?
    Is it true that there are not templates in Java?
    Packages offered by java do substitude for example the STL c++ templates?
    Are there any other evident advantages of java over C++
    I apreciate any hint and opinion
    Thanks in advance
    Mandy

    Hi,
    What about the impossibility of multi-inheritance and
    overloading of the operators?Doesn't matter that much. And bad programmer can write bad code in any language.
    The fact that there are no header files has an
    advantage?It might be a bit easier, but it doesn't matter that much.
    Is it true that thread priorities and scheduling are
    not portable?Yes
    Is it true that there are not templates in Java?Yes, and no. There are generics in JDK 1.5.
    Packages offered by java do substitude for example the
    STL c++ templates?I'd say that this is the big difference.
    In java It's very easy to develop a full blown application with networking, and ui in a short time. I don't have any links to provide (but I guess you could use google to find facts), but I think the development time in java is much shorted than in c++.
    Are there any other evident advantages of java over
    C++It's easier to run the java application on multiple platforms. The advantage to c++ is that it can be used to write drivers, applications with small footprints, and to access native functions/APIs to the platform.

  • Advantages of VISA over GPIB

    i want to know advantages of VISA over GPIB in labview when we connect our pc with a device which has GPIB interface
    what could be reason behind using VISA programming
    i want atleast 5 advantages of visa over GPIB .
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
    1.VISA Write is equivalent to a GPIB write except the VISA Write returns a VISA Reference Out that is much easier to use. You pass that to the next VISA function instead of wiring a GPIB address to all.This will make your blockdiagram cleaner.
    2.portability:-VISA supports GPIB, Serial, Ethernet, USB, PXI, VXI, and PCI. So, with a single piece of code, you can support all of the interfaces and even GPIB controllers from different vendors.
    3.VISA supports aliases. You can assign logical names to the resources. Instead of trying to remember the GPIB address in a rack full of instruments, you can reference 'DMM', 'Scope', etc.
    4. If you are programming multiple devices that communicate over more than one bus type, it might be easier to use VISA for your entire system.
    5. In VISA, you must always call viEnableEvent() prior to being allowed to receive events, this is required in VISA to avoid the race condition of trying to wait on events for which the hardware may not be enabled.
    6.The VISA Resource Control allows you to pick from a list of available resources.
        Enough
    Thanks as kudos only

  • Advantages of BSP over Webdynpro ABAP

    Hi,,
    Can anyone please explain what are the advantages of BSP over WebDynpro ABAP, In what cases do we need to stick with BSP?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    There is a SAP web GUI map and it contains different technologies as follows:
    If you have the SAP screen already available , then the best solution would be to go for the ITS solution(Web Gui).
    But if you were to compare the man days required to code a dynpro and a web dynpro screen from scratch then they would approximately be the same.
    Yes if you want to leverage on Web Dynpro you will have to currently code all screen from scratch , and encapsulate your backend logic as function modules.
    Apart from BSP you have the option to use Portal Development Kit (if you have SAP EP in your landscape) . JSPHTMLB(tag libraries)JCO running on WAS 6.2 or 6.4 or other Java server.
    If you have just one screen and currently dont have the WAS 6.4 in your landscape and it would involve delays interms of procurement , setup and training, then its better you go with either of the above solutions depending on the skillsets in your team.
    If you can make an FM of your trx, the BSP solution might be the easiest step. No additionial knowledge (except from some HTML(B)) is needed.
    Advantages of web dynpro:
    Additionally,
    I would say if you would want a quantum leap in advantages by preferring a UI solution , then it has to be webdynpro be it ABAP or Java.
    Some of the features that I have heard about and noticed as well is
    -> Metadata based which means tomorrow SAP could easily support a new client without you not requiring even to change a line of code.
    -> Support for Java gui and Win gui for web dynpro coming up(over http)
    -> More professional UI and flicker free
    -> Faster development time when compared to BSP or JSP
    -> Future proof
    Disadvantages:
    On the down side
    -> You loose control on so many things that you took for granted in web programming such as javascript support, DHTML
    Hope this will help you.
    Cheers,
    Darshna.

  • Advantages of Collection over Cursor

    Hello All,
    Cursor acts like a pointer to the query result.
    Collections stores the query result.
    But,
    What are the advantages of collection over cursor?
    I Googled it but didn't find the exact info.
    Thx

    Prabodh wrote:
    Hi,
    Each has its own use. They do not compete but supplement each other.
    One has to use them , mix and match, together.
    If collections were all that useless then they would not have existed , and neither would have BULK COLLECT.
    Within COLLECTIONs, you have NESTED TABLES, ASSOCIATIVE ARRAY and VARRAY. The VARRAY is probably still around for backward compatibility, but other 2 are extremely useful.
    Points to consider:
    a) Bulk Collect is much faster than CURSOR loop
    b)Collection once loaded can be manipulated in memory. Faster but heavy on PGA.Faster than what exactly? Certainly not faster than just doing it in SQL. Faster than row by row cursor loop processing? Depends what "manipulation" is required.
    c) NESTED tables allow you to organize data, can be used with Cursor!
    d) String to table and table yo string (like java String.split method) possible only with Collection. Not possible without Collect / arrayAlso possible with pure SQL.
    I cannot imagine a world without COLLECTIONs. I use them extensively, just like I use CURSORS.I've had a few uses for them... but only a few. Most of the hard work is done on the database using SQL.
    Still not convinced? Look up the Specs of OWA_UTIL, DBMS_SQL, APEX_APPLICATION_GLOBAL, etc. They have Associative Arrays all over the place.
    In fact Application Apex would not have come into existence with Associate Arrays; they are used left, right and center in it
    All the negative opinions expressed on Collections only reflects ignorance.

  • Advantages of Statement over PreparedStatement

    I would like to know advantages of Statement over PreparedStatement. If we have PreparedStatement which uses pre-compiled sql statements then why we use Statement.
    Regards,
    Nikhil Shah

    Nikhl_Shah,
    It is important to know the differences, it is also important to know that 99.9% of the time you should use PreparedStatement. Since this has been discussed 100's if not 1000's of times in this forum, first try searching this forum, I would be stunned if you didn't find all the information you need, but if you don't, ask again in this thread and I or others would be happy to list them for perhaps the 1001 time!

  • Why suddenly my Note 2 has been popping up roaming signal every 3 min. even in my house?

    I have had my Samsung Note 2 for over a year.  All of sudden for last 3 months it has been popping up the roaming signal every 3 min.  Even in my house!!! My statement shows no roaming charge but why does my phone think it's roaming?  It is rather annoying because when it shows the roaming signal, it stops everything.   How can I fix this?

        That's odd, jian10!
    I would love to assist you in resolving this device issue.  Is this happening at one specific location or everywhere you travel?  If it's only happening at one specific location, what is the zip code of this location?  Please try removing and reinserting the SIM Card of your device http://vz.to/1otwlNl to ensure the device roaming capabilities are up to date.  Keep me posted.

  • Code sample to access imap server over ssl via javamail 1.3.2

    I'm trying to access an imap mailbox over ssl and have downloaded the javamail 1.3.2 release. I understand this introduces the "imaps" protocol for this but has anyone got a simple code example and/or links to articles that describe the steps you need to get a working piece of code ? The release notes and samples seem a bit light on this area. I'm using Tomcat 5.5.4 and Java 5 in my environment.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    this article should help you to get on the way: http://www.javaworld.com/javatips/jw-javatip115.html.
    To access an IMAP-server via ssl, you could use the following code:
          String SSL_FACTORY = "javax.net.ssl.SSLSocketFactory";
          Properties props = new Properties();
          props.setProperty("mail.store.protocol", "imap");
          props.setProperty("mail.imap.host", hostname);
          props.setProperty("mail.imap.port", port);
          if (mustUseSSL())
            props.setProperty( "mail.imap.socketFactory.class", SSL_FACTORY);
            props.setProperty( "mail.imap.socketFactory.fallback", "false");
            props.setProperty( "mail.imap.socketFactory.port", secureport);
            java.security.Security.setProperty( "ssl.SocketFactory.provider", SSL_FACTORY);
          Session s = Session.getDefaultInstance(props, null);
          Store store = s.getStore(protocol);
          try
              store.connect(hostname, port, user, pwd);
          catch (AuthenticationFailedException afe)
              // no valid authentication
          catch (Exception ge)
               // different exception
          }

    Seriously though....
    WebLogic (for which I have deployed many apps on) as
    well as Websphere are both high end Java application
    servers, meaning J2EE servers (in short). They allow
    one to deploy Enterprise Archive(EAR), a Web
    Archive(WAR), or an EJB Archive (in a JR file).
    These two servers allow one to deploy EJBs, use
    e JNDI, JMS, connectors, and other J2EE technologies
    - Tomcat does not. well, EJBs - no
    JNDI, yes - http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-4.1-doc/jndi-resources-howto.html
    JMS - yes (with an implementation, such as ActiveMQ: http://activemq.codehaus.org/Tomcat)
    Not sure what you mean by "connectors".
    Tomcat provides quite a bit of functionality (but yes, no EJBs)

  • Creating an interactive CV: mouse over / roll over pop ups, embedded documents and videos

    Hi everyone,
    I am pretty new to Adobe Acrobat Pro and new to this forum (1st post here!). Greetings from Spain... and apologies for grammar mistakes and misleading explanations (in advance). I have been checking this forum and googling quite a bit, but I do not get to many conclusions (maybe I sleep few due to our baby!).
    I want to create an interactive CV with the following characteristics:
    1) CV in 1 page in a PDF document (no problem here!)
    2) Hyperlinks in the text which open embedded files (pdf of others) hidden to the viewer but which are in the pdf document. Possible? (I want the recruiter to receive just one file). Even better if they could be open in another window (doubt it).
              How could it be done? I try add documents and they are attached at the end, so the original pdf gets to have more pages, all viewable.
    3) Furthermore, mouse over / roll over pop ups which show you a preview of the file you may open clicking the hyperlink, for a quick view of the content.
              I think that this may be done, but using other programs, like InDesign. I just try to add a document, but it's sort of a link to a document in my computer. I may add pdf, pps files.
    4) Even more, would it be possible to embed a video which would open in a new window? If not, I tried to add a link to youtube and there was a warning as "this program tries to open a window, if you trust the owner... " (similar safety message) and the very last thing I want the recruiter to have to decide whether to decide to watch it or not.
    I know its a questions in its very first stages, but the big point is to know if/what it is possible to do, so that I search in the right direction.
    If you have any idea or advice (even if not related to PDF pro, of course), just please let me know.
    Thanks a lot in advance. I hope this thread may help others.
    Cheers,
    tebanseeker

    Hi Dave,
    Thanks a lot for the input.
    (3) Right, I could not find either a way using just Acrobat Pro (I'm using XI). Sad thing that you confirm it... But it looks like you may do it using other programs on the PDF, but I don't know to use them. You may take a look at this:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEyJuT8SSME (popup rollovers using Illustrator)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOVRMVdZbVE (popup rollovers using InDesign)
    (4) I think that embedding would make the file to big, so I may opt for the hyperlink to youtube option, even if I deeply dislike that message, although youtube is a reliable source for the viewer.
    Any other input is very welcome. I am pretty illiterate in the field!
    Have a nice weekend,

  • Advantage of DMS over "Services for object" functionality

    Hi Experts,
    I have got very basic doubt about advantages of DMS Over existing standard functionality of SAP.
    We can attach documents or files to SAP Objects using "services for object" push button ( Next to title bar).
    So please answer for my below queries
    1. What is the disadvantage of using Services for Object??
    2. If I use services for object, then file is stored in SAP Data base or in my local drive??
    Thanks and Regards,

    Hello ,
    DMS Vs GOS
    DMS- Document Management System
    The Document Management System (DMS) in SAP R/3 offers the following distinct advantages over the current procedures and systems.
    u2022     It avoids data redundancy, maintains consistency of data and minimizes the workload involved in entering and updating data.
    u2022     In order to use large databases to the full, it is required to exchange data quickly and securely.  Data can be accessed directly using electronic search tools, or find documents using known parameters.
    u2022     Document distribution functionality  (SAP-Workflow functionality is required)
    The SAP R/3 Document Management System meets all these demanding requirements.  In addition to managing documents, it also coordinates document processing.  It is possible to automate the entire life cycle of a document: from document creation to document storage, its access and its update.  Each document can be accessed immediately from any computer on the netwerk.
    GOS-
    All these DMS advantages are not available with GOS.
    The Detailed PPT of comparison is sent to your id.
