Advantages of alv reports
hi guru
what is exactly the use of alv reports in real time.
why peoples using alv reports frequently in real time.
thanks.
subhasis.
HI
ALV is Application List viewer. Sap provides a set of ALV (ABAP LIST VIEWER) function modules which can be put into use to embellish the output of a report. This set of ALV functions is used to enhance the readability and functionality of any report output. Cases arise in sap when the output of a report contains columns extending more than 255 characters in length. In such cases, this set of ALV functions can help choose selected columns and arrange the different columns from a report output and also save different variants for report display. This is a very efficient tool for dynamically sorting and arranging the columns from a report output. The report output can contain up to 90 columns in the display with the wide array of display options.
advantages.
Collapse multiple reports into one, drastically cutting down your report development time
Save many hours using built-in ALV sorting, subtotaling and filtering capabilities
Add conditional structures into your ALV report: No programming required!
Combine ALV with display variants to meet a wide range of reporting requirements more easily
Dynamically reorder column layouts and add/subtract fields
Enable users and analysts to save their own personalized variants
The keyword is flexibility. In the past I have sometimes programmed more programs that was basically the same report with minor variations - in one case i programmed 10 very similar reports for pp evaluation.
With ALV the users can define their own display variants without changing the program.
The display variant covers sorting, summarizing, filtering, hiding fields. The users can also make variants that show only total lines or subtotal lines or both - and by one click in the report they can expand one total line to display the underlying item lines.
The users can also choose to let the report show directly in excel. This is a very powerful option. You can upload excel templates with predefined formulas and macros. This can make you very popular - especially with Finance people that already have a lot of excel files, they populate with SAP data to make al kind of voodoo calculations that will help them see into the future.
With ALV you can give them an ABAP report that automatic popup with their own favorite excel book - without having to do a lot of troublesome and time consuming work to download the data and fit it into the excel sheet.
If you are new to ALV you can very quick make a simple ALV report. Basically it has 3 steps.
1) build an internal table with the data you want do display
2) build a field catalog table (each record in this table describes one column in the list)
3) call the ALV function
Later you can make use of more complicated functions like call back routines.
You have both functions modules and ABAP OO classes to help you with step 2 and 3. I have used the function modules for many years so its hard for me to change, but if I should start all over today I would forget about the function modules and go for the OO approach.
This paper clearly distingushes the advantages of ALV.

Running the alv report in background and sending it thro email
hi,
i have to run the alv report in background and send the output through emailHi
Many a times there is a requirement to display ALV Grid (not ALV List) in the background Job. I have checked the SDN Forum for the same and it has been mentioned that ALV Grid cannot be displayed in Background, but the list output of ALV is possible. So user wont have the actual Grid interface but the List interface.
There is a workaround to display ALV Grid in Background Job. The only restriction is you cant schedule the job through SM36. You need to execute the transaction of the report program, fill in the selection screen data and hit Execute.
The job would be executed in background. User will be able to see the Job Log and Job Status after executing the program. User doesnt have to go to SM37 to view the job status/log. Once the Job Status is changed to COMPLETED, user can click on DISPLAY SPOOL to view the ALV Grid.
Limitations:
Cant schedulea background job
The session should be active until the background job is completed. If the session is closed, then user wont be able to check the output in ALV Grid. User would be able to check the output through spool or SM37
Advantages:
If the spool width is greater than 255 characters, then the entire width could be seen in the output because the output is directed to an ALV Grid and not to spool
Interface of ALV Grid is available instead of ALV List even though its a background job.
Program wont give the TIME OUT error
Steps Required:
1. Once you execute the program, the following screen would be displayed
2. Click Display Job Status to check the Status of the Background Job
3. Click on Display the Job Log to check the Log
4. Click on Display Job Status to check the Job Status
5. Click on DISPLAY SPOOL to check the spool content once the Job Status is changed to COMPLETED. Output is displayed in ALV Grid
Programs:
1. Two different programs needs to be created
ZPROGRAM_ONE: This is the 1st program, where the selection screen and all the data validations would be done. Error handling for invalid data should be done in this program.
Once the data validation is done, this program would call the 2nd program ZPROGEAM_TWO. Build the logic to display ALV Grid in this program. The logic will only display ALV in foreground and it wont be reflected in the spool.
ZPROGRAM_TWO: This program would fetch all the data and do all the processing. If you want the spool output along with ALV Grid output, then build the logic in this program to display ALV Grid.

OO Design--do ABAP Persistent Classes make sense for ALV reports in NW2004?
Hello experts,
At our company, we started using ABAP OO in the last year.
I am on NW-2004 . We just acquired a business that is on 4.6C.
We have a lot of customization to bring into our system. There are a lot of reports with common queries that span multiple tables.
I would like to follow the best practice for OO design and create global classes for the data access layer the business logic layer and the UI layer. For the UI layer, I will be utilizing the SALV class, since NW2004 doesn't have ABAP WebDynpro (we don't have a java stack available for development and software change management).
For the data access layer, I would like to use the persistent classes, but without the query manager, it just doesn't make sense.
Thomas Jung said in a blog that he sometimes used SQL to get the keys and then used persistent classes to retrieve the remaining data. But for straight ALV reporting, that just seems inefficient. But it could be that I am just not familiar enough with the technology.
I am looking for suggestions on how to design the data access layer for these intense and commonly used queries.
(Ironically, we will upgrade to NW2004s after this migration -- ouch!)
All ideas are appreciated.
Thanks.Hi Kimberly,
the main advantage of persistent objects is that their state can be saved in the database. If a persistent object changes in your program, these changes can be reflected in the corresponding database field(s). Thus, persistent objects are very useful when doing CRUD (create, read, update and delete) operations with business objects.
However, if you just want to read data (for simple reporting) but do not plan to implement any of the other CRUD operations, I doubt if a persistency layer is necessary since this causes extra effort during design time and runtime. In that case, simple SELECT statements seem to be more appropriate.

David -
ALV Reports versus ABAP drilldown or high volume data
Which is better with regards to performance? An ALV grid or an ABAP drilldown ?
I am very concerned about performance given the high volume of data and therefore not sure if I should use ALV?
input is appreciated
Jhi JJ,
ALV reporting is always having lot of advantages over abap reproting in many ways,
performace increases due to the use of
object oriented cocepts like classes, objects and methods
by using the line type and row type internable declarations..
and user friendly out put

Please send me some real time quetions in REPORTS/ ALV REPORTS
please anybody can send me some real time issues and quetions from REPORTS,
ALV REPORTSHi,
Report is basically a program which extracts the data from the database tables based on some inputs and gives the output as a list.
Report are classified as Classical Reports, Interactive Reports and ALV Report.
Classical Report is a normal report which just displays the output.User cannot interact with that report.
Interactive Report is nothing but, a user can interacte with the report. After a basic list is displayed, user can click on some field on the list which generates a secondary list giving the necessary information relevant to that field.
ALV Report is to provide users with a consistent, user friendly and functional method of manipulating the data, which appears on report lists. ALV provides more advantages than the normal report

hi,
Can ny one give the sequence of alv reports with descripions?hi,
*the alv is a functionality provided within abap which can enchance reports in r/3 system.
(or) simple way to display the reports in orderly manner.
*it is a in built function.
*alv is a set of functional module which are added to the abap program code.
advantages:
*saves time that is spent in enchancing reports.
*provides uniform user interface
1.header of the column.
2.colors which correspond to indented 'key' info.
steps in alv:
1.declare data areas for list viewer(type-pools:slis)
2.declare internal table to store selected data.
3.select data into int table.
4.build fieldcatalog.
5.build sortcatlog.
6.build eventcatalog.
7.start abap list viewer (ctrl+f6)
8.call back events.
the report output can contain upto 90 columns in the display with the wide array of display options.
common alv functions used are
reuse_alv_list_display
reuse_alv_grid_display
reuse_alv_variant_default_get
reuse_alv_variant_f4
reuse_alv_commentary_write
reuse_alv_variant_existence

Hi all,
i have to develop a ALV report.
In that report i have to put a open quantity column , so that the user can enter values in that, and that value should get updated in the database.
So please suggest me how to develop such report with open field.
Thanks in advance,

'@' not getting displayed in the ALV report
Hello,
I am facing a strange issue in the ALV report display. A string starting with '@' is not getting displayed and says "default icon " on the report. and this is varying from system to system for the same user.
can anyone please help me in resolving the issue.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks and Regards,
Santhosh Guptha N.@ is a default value as per ALV internal process. This is used in icons .
I think this is causing the confusion.
Check in the fieldcat if there is any adjsutment to be made to handle this.

GoutamHi goutam,
1. Simple
2. we have to use the layout for this purpose.
3. like this :
alvly-lights_fieldname = 'LT'.
alvly-lights_tabname = 'ITAB'.
4. Just copy paste to get a taste of it.
(important code has been highlighted)
REPORT abc.
TYPE-POOLS : slis.
DATA : alvly TYPE slis_layout_alv.
DATA : alvfc TYPE slis_t_fieldcat_alv.
DATA : BEGIN OF itab OCCURS 0,
<b> lt TYPE i,</b>
matnr LIKE mara-matnr,
END OF itab.
END-OF-SELECTION.
<b> itab-lt = 1.
APPEND itab.
itab-lt = 2.
APPEND itab.
itab-lt = 3.
APPEND itab.

APPEND itab.
itab-lt = 3.
APPEND itab.
itab-lt = 3.
APPEND itab.</b>
<b> alvly-lights_fieldname = 'LT'.
