Advantages of CTS+ over File system transport

Hello experts,
I have searched a lot on SDN ,but couldn't find a document which exactly explains the advantages and disadvantages of CTS+ over File system Transport basically a table with points and the status of those points with CTS+ and File System Transport.
Can you please help.
Best Regards,
Shweta

The enhanced Change and Transport System (CTS+) enables you to transport Portal/Java objects and SAP-related non-ABAP applications in your system landscape, along with your ABAP objects. You can also administer non-ABAP systems in a CTS transport domain in SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP.
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/45/ec25370fdc3481e10000000a1553f6/content.htm
You can integrate NWDI with CTS+ and have the transports moved through CTS+.
Also, you utilize CTS+ for portal related transports as well.
To start with, have a look at the following How to guides:

  • Query on File system transport

    Hi XI experts,
We have few queries regarding transport using File Transport system
    1. A new SWC has been created in DEV system. How to transport the same to QUAL/PRD? When we select the option "All objects of a SWCV" will the SWC and SWCV be included.
    2. Should we manually import the IDOC from SAP systems in QUAL and PROD as we did for DEV or ir can be included in the transport itself?
    Thanks in Advance.

Have you trasported SLD Objects like Product/SWC to quality?? first complete SLD Trasports then come to ESR ,ID Trasports.
If you want to trasport SWC , right click on that export, select all objects, store it in local desk top, import it in quality, you will see all obejcts.
when you trasport software components all IDocs used in SWC will also moved, so you no need to import in quality

  • Oracle cache and File System cache

on the checkpoint, oracle cache will be written to disk. But, If an oracle database is over file system datafile, it likely that the data are still leave in FileSystem cache. I don't know how could oracle keep data consistency.

Thanks for your feedback. I am almost clear about this issue now, except one point need to be confirmed: do you mean that on linux or unix, if required, we can set "direct to disk" from OS level, but for windows, it's default "direct to disk", we do not need to set it manually.
And I have a further question: If a database is stored on a SAN disk, say, a volume from disk array, the disk array could take snapshot for a disk on block level, we need to implement online backup of database. The steps are: alter tablespace begin backup, alter system suspend, take a snapshot of the volume which store all database files, including datafiles, redo logs, archived redo logs, controll file, service parameter file, network parameter files, password file. Do you think this backup is integrity or not. please note, we do not flush the fs cache before all these steps. Let's assume the SAN cache could be flushed automatically. Can I think it's integrity because the redo writes are synchronous.

  • Raw devices versus Cluster File Systems in RAC 10gR2

    Hi,
Does anyone using cluster file systems in a RAC 10gR2 installation, specifically IBM’s GPFS?
I’ve visited a company that is running RAC 10gR2 in AIX over raw devices. Why someone would choose to use raw devices , with all the problems to administer , when all the modern file systems are so powerful? Is there any issues when using cluster file systems + RAC? Is there considerable performance benefits when using raw devices with RAC ?
I´ve always used Oracle stand alone instances over file systems (since version 7) , and performance was always very good. I´ve tested raw devices almost 10 years ago , and even in that time (the hardware today is much better - SAN , 15K rpm disks , huge caches - and the file systems software today is much better) the cost to administer it does not compensate the benefits (only 5% more faster than file systems in Oracle 7).
So , besides any limitations imposed by RAC , why use raw devices nowadays ?
    Regards,
    Antonio Belloni

    Hi,
spontaneously, my question would be: How did you eliminate the influence of the Linux File System Cache on ext3? OCFS2 is accessed with the o_direct flag - there will be no caching. The same holds true for RAW devices. This could have an influence on your test and I did not see a configuration step to avoid it.
What I saw, though, is "counter test": "I have tried comparing simple file copies from an OS level and the speed differences are not apparent - so the issue only manifests itself when the data is read via an oracle db." and I have no good answer to that one.
Maybe this paper has: http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/linux/pdf/Linux-FS-Performance-Comparison.pdf - it's a bit older, but explains some of the interdependencies.
Last question: While you spent a lot of effort on proving that this one query is slower on OCFS2 or RAW than on ext3 for the initial read (that's why you flushed the buffer cache before each run), how realistic is this scenario when this system goes into production? I mean, how many times will this query be read completely from disk as opposed to use some block from the buffer? If you consider that, what impact does the "IO read time from disk" have on the overall performance of the system? If you do not isolate the test to just a read, how do writes compare?
    Just some questions. Thanks.

  • Journaled file system for startup volume only?

I have been told that the advantage of a journaled file system is only realized on the startup volume. Surely, protecting the critical startup files is first priority for most users, but does the advantage of a journaled file system apply to other drive volumes, too? Please explain why this is or is not true. Thanks.

it applies to all drives but it's much less relevant for non startup drives. startup drives are being written to constantly and other drives are not. the likelihood of an external drive being written to at the moment of say a power outage is much smaller than that for the startup drive. therefore having journaling on on nonstartup drives is not as crucial. you can still do it though if you want to.

  • DNFS with ASM over dNFS with file system - advantages and disadvantages.

    Hello Experts,
We are creating a 2-node RAC. There will be 3-4 DBs whose instances will be across these nodes.
For storage we have 2 options - dNFS with ASM and dNFS without ASM.
The advantages of ASM are well known --
    1. Easier administration for DBA, as using this 'layer', we know the storage very well.
    2. automatic re-balancing and dynamic reconfiguration.
    3. Stripping and mirroring (though we are not using this option in our env, external redundancy is provided at storage level).
    4. Less (or no) dependency on storage admin for DB file related tasks.
    5. Oracle also recommends to use ASM rather than file system storage.
Advantages of DNFS(Direct Network File System) ---
    1. Oracle bypasses the OS layer, directly connects to storage.
    2. Better performance as user's data need not to be loaded in OS's kernel.
    3. It load balances across multiple network interfaces in a similar fashion to how ASM operates in SAN environments.
Now if we combine these 2 options , how will be that configuration in terms of administration/manageability/performance/downtime in future in case of migration.
    I have collected some points.
In favor of 'NOT' HAVING ASM--
    1. ASM is an extra layer on top of storage so if using dNFS ,this layer should be removed as there are no performance benefits.
    2. store the data in file system rather than ASM.
    3. Stripping will be provided  at storage level (not very much sure about this).
    4. External redundancy is being used at storage level so its better to remove ASM.
points for 'HAVING' ASM with dNFS --
    1. If we remove ASM then DBA has no or very less control over storage. He can't even see how much is the free space left as physical level.
    2. Stripping option is there to gain performance benefits
    3. Multiplexing has benefits over mirroring when it comes to recovery.
(e.g, suppose a database is created with only 1 controlfile as external mirroring is in place at storage level , and another database is created with 2 copies (multiplexed within Oracle level), and an rm command was issued to remove that file then definitely there will be a time difference between restoring the file back.)
    4. Now familiar and comfortable with ASM.
I have checked MOS also but could not come to any conclusion, Oracle says --
"Please also note that ASM is not required for using Direct NFS and NAS. ASM can be used if customers feel that ASM functionality is a value-add in their environment. " ------How to configure ASM on top of dNFS disks in 11gR2 (Doc ID 1570073.1)
Kindly advise which one I should go with. I would love to go with ASM but If this turned out to be a wrong design in future, I want to make sure it is corrected in the first place itself.
    Regards,
    Hemant

I agree, having ASM on NFS is going to give little benefit whilst adding complexity.  NAS will carrying out mirroring and stripping through hardware where as ASM using software.
I would recommend DNFS only if NFS performance isn't acceptable as DNFS introduce an additional layer with potential bugs!  When I first used DNFS in 11gR1, I came across lots of bugs and worked with Oracle Support to have them all resolved.  I recommend having read of this metalink note:
Required Diagnostic for Direct NFS Issues and Recommended Patches for 11.1.0.7 Version (Doc ID 840059.1)
Most of the fixes have been rolled into 11gR2 and I'm not sure what the state of play is on 12c.
    Hope this helps

    Hi.
There are two ways to transport ID and IR Object to transport .
    1. CTS + : Totally automated Way .,
    2. .tpz : Manual Lagacy Import / Import way .
    Now . Steps .are :
There are two types of transport mechanisms in XI/PI.
    1. File Transport System.
Files are imported and exported into SAP XI OS Level for Development and Quality Server,
This Process is risky as there is no automated system and there is no track record of imported or Exported Files,
as in this syetem exported files are transported to QA System from DEV System.
file Extension in file transport System : - .tpz
    2. Through CTMS(Change Transport Managment System).
GUI Based tool, Installed on SAP XI BOX, This system provides the automated transport system , which keep tracks of transported Objects and Failed objects.
There are initial level efforts to set up transport system.
Transport Procedure for Various System :-
DESIGN OBJECTS ---> (ENTERPRISE SERVICE REPSITORY OBJECTS) -
    > INTEGRATION BUILDER.
    Step -I
    1. Select NameSpace to trasport.
    2. Right Click on NameSpace to Transport.
    3. Select Export Option.
    4. Check or Select the Software Component Version.
    5. Check the Mode of transport.
    CTS MOde:-
5.1 Select a required type of Object Set:
IN OUR CASE: ALL OBJECT OF INDIVIDUAL NAMESPACE.
    5.2 Select Transort request.
    5.3 Finish the Process.
    TRANSPORT USING FILE SYSTEM:-
5.1 Select a required type of Object Set:
IN OUR CASE: ALL OBJECT OF INDIVIDUAL NAMESPACE.
    5.2 Finish the Process.
    Step II
    1. GO TO TOOLS OPTION IN MENU BAR
    2. OPEN CTS TRANSPORT ORGANIZER
    3. Select the request to Release.
    4. Press Button Release.
Step III( Steps to be Perform at Target System).
    1. Execute Transection Code STMS.
    2. Check your Transport Request Number.
    3. Focus on that Trasport Request Number Through Mouse.
    4. Now Import The Transport Request on Specific client of Target System.
    5.Click Ok.
FINAL :- NOw on Quality Server all Transported Objects Need to be activated.
CONFIGURATION OBJECTS ---> (INTEGRATION DIRECTORY) -
    > INTEGRATION BUILDER.
    Step -I
    1. Select Configuration Scenario to trasport.
    2. Right Click on Configuration Scenario to Transport.
    3. Select Export Option.
    4. Check or Select the Configuration Scenario.
    5. Check the Mode of transport.

  • CTS+ Close coupling for transporting epa files

    Hi all,
Is this possible? We have set up CTS+ in our landscape. The domain controller is an ECC 6.0 dual stack system. We would like to be able to create transport package in the portal and automatically assign it to a newly transport request.
We now have problems stating " No valid transport request found; consult your system administrator". We have also had some issues saying that the epa file does not exist, but it is definitely there.
    Ant ideas?
    Best regards,
    Jan Laros
Note: I have read the several blogs and how to guides concerning CTS+ and the configuration already.

    Defaulttrace states the following:

  • WebLogic as Windows 2000 service over s shared file system

I am trying to install weblogic as a Windows 2000 service over a
shared file system with no sucess
(the shared fie system is provided by windows 2000 cluster services).
I am using the srvany utility to have the script that launches
weblogic be run as a service (I need this
because I must launch 2 instances of weblogic in the same machine
as services, i cannot do this
with the bea service tools, having different configurations for
    the classpath, or can I?)
The service works if weblogic is not installed in a shared file
    system.
On the shared file system, it fails (The service fails, is unabble
to start). I also made a script on the local file
system, that calls the weblogic script on the shared file system,
but weblogic fails to start (with no
message) when loading from the weblogic.classpath
    thanks for your attenction,
    Bruno Antunes

I have also tried running the service with the bea tools, with no
    sucess when running in
    the shared file system.
When i start the service, it seems to start ok, then stops. with
    no message.
Nothing is written to the log, any ideas?

    Hi,
You will have to configure transport targets like for different business systems in your dev environment, there shouls be corresponding Business systems in QUA environment. For more details refer the link

    Hi Dominik
What is the target of this transport request? Are you sure it's not marked as "local" in transaction SE01 for example? Because if it is a local transport request, it will not generate a file.

  • Transporting Transport Request from System to file System

    Hello,
I want to transport my Tranport request from SAP system to file system and from file system to SAP system. Please give me detailled procedure.
    It is urgent.
    Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards,
    zubera

Release your transport as usual, and the files would be in the following directories of the target system.
    /usr/sap/trans/cofiles - Cofile and will have KXXXXX.TRA
    /usr/sap/trans/data   - Data and will have RXXXXXX.TRA
where XXXXXX is your transport number.

  • Oracle´s File system over GPFS on Oracle RAC

    Hi all,
I would like to know which Oracle´s File systems should be over GPFS on a Oracle RAC implementation.
    Regards,
    Sebastian.
    Edited by: user12549343 on 02-feb-2010 9:10

You didn't provide info about DB relase and OS.
But probably you are talking about AIX OS (I can't see any reason to use GPFS on Linux for RAC and I don't remember if this FS was/is supported for RAC on Linux (check Certification Matrix for this information)). Oracle is provides only one shared "filesystem" for AIX and it is ASM.
Now it depends on DB version what options you can use.
Till 11g R2 you have to store OCR and Voting disks outside of ASM (So you needed to use either RAW devices or Cluster Filesystem which GPFS is). Since 11g R2 you can store these disks in ASM directly.
On Linux if you don't want to use ASM to store database files you can use OCFS2 clusterfile system.
