Advantages of upgrading

Anyone with any insight into whether it is worth while upgrading to snow leopard would be appreciated. I currently run imac(intel) with osx 10.5.8. Are there any advantages to snow leopard apart from being able to upgrade imovie or ilife. Anyone out there that is disappointed that they upgraded? I think the version I have works fine but can't upgrade ilife without upgrading OSX.

I am from the school that always updates. I likie to use the latest and greatest.
OS X 10.6 allopws you to use the myriad "apps" from the App Store.
OS X 10.6 is stable and has been for a long time.
Take a look at the Apple Store list of OS X 10.6 advances to help you make the decision.
One thought - Apple has announced the release of OS X 10.7 (codename Lion) sometime this summer. The features in it are also on the Apple web site.

As a reference for performance, you can look at the Capacity Planning Guides for both versions of the product and do your own comparison. Note however that hardware changes between these two points in time are quite extreme.

Note that there are many other reasons to upgrade, including vast improvements in functionality and the short time horizon for continued support of WLP 8.1. I don't know when support will end for that release, but it's coming in the near to mid term.

You need not upgrade unless there is something you do that cannot be done unless you upgrade. Upgrading OS X doesn't mess up anyone's computer. Users mess up their computers.
Your model has 2 GBs of RAM which is adequate for Snow Leopard although 4 GBs would be better. Upgrading to Snow Leopard will cost $29.00. You can order from Apple's Online Store. Here's a good procedure to follow:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
E. If updating:
Download and install update(s)
Use Software Update, or
Download standalone updater(s).

Can anyone direct me to an overview of the advantages (and any disadvantages?) of upgrading from OS 10.7 to 10.8 (Lion to Mountain Lion).
I use wireless streaming of music in my house and it drops out a lot (music stops) are there any improvements to airport express / wireless streaming?

Advantages of upgrading from CS4 to CS5?

I am currently using Premiere CS4. My sources are an AVCHD Sanyo camcorder and an "AVCHD Lite" Panasonic FZ38. My computer is a Q6600 with 4 GB RAM and an ATI Radeon HD 3780 running Windows 7, 32 bits.
Because I make plain DVDs I used the Adobe Media Converter to batch convert all the files into a more usable resolution, because trying to natively edit the files was skippy and tiresome, not to mention the thousands of times AP-CS4 and Encore-CS4 have crashed after hours of encoding my videos when edited at native resolution.
My PC won't take any advantage of the GPU processing because it's NVidia only and I don't like them. In order to install Adobe Premiere CS5 I'd have to do a full reinstall, upping my W7/32 to W7/64.
I'd like to know if there are advantages worth the change. For now, all the blah I read over the new Mercury engine has to do with the GPU optimization.

Just my opinion but I wasn't a million miles away from your system when I decided to take the plunge and upgrade earlyish to CS5. I did my upgrade with a simultaneous upgrade of Windows XP to Windows 7 64, Graphics Card from NVidia 8800 GTX to NVidia GTX 285 and 4Gb RAM to 8Gb RAM. The main difference for me is the GPU accelleration (albeit you will still have a major problem with this until apparently the next release as there is a bug which means cross disolves on a split clip won't play - this is so annoying it's untrue but apparently a fix is due but AVCHD editors are tearing their hair out on this, I've practically had to stop editing on PPro) and I often use 2 layers of AVCHD and there is no problems with playback now although render times are still very long. Apart from the above mentioned bug there is a vast improvement with being able to play the timeline but as Harm has indicated, you will need to upgrade your spec and your graphics card to achieve this. I wouldn't upgrade to CS5 without the other system changes in my opinion as CS4 was coping adequately and probably as well as CS5 will.

Adobe has upgraded Connect to 9.3. 9.3 unfortunately isn't fully compatible with my OS 10.6.8. Since I use Connect to tutor students at my online university, I need full functionality. Adobe told me that Connect 9.3 will work with 10.7 through 10.9, but NOT 10.10. My choices are either 10.10 for free, or paying $20 to get either 10.7 or 10.8, unless I know someone who downloaded 10.9 and would let me access their account. Is there any advantage of 10.7 over 10.8, or should I just go to 10.8? I'm thinking 10.8 will probably last longer before Adobe Connect puts out a version that will require me to upgrade again, but I don't know if there were any advantages of 10.7 over 10.8. I kept 10.6 because it allows the operation of Rosetta, which allows me access to all the old emails and pieces I wrote in the old AOL for Mac OS X, but I think some of them I'll be able to open in other apps from the finder at least, albeit with a lot of junk symbols that will make them hard to read. I have to be able to work though, so I need to be able to have full functionality with Adobe Connect, so work trumps personal items I've stored, alas. Anyway, is there any advantage to picking 10.7, or should I just go to 10.8?

Yes, the lack of compatibility with Rosetta is what's kept me at 10.6.8. I used to save everything in AOL for Mac OS X, both emails and things I'd written, until AOL came out with a completely different application and I realized that eventually I wouldn't be able to run the old AOL. Before my last upgrade, from 10.5 to 10.6, I thought I was going to lose the old AOL, so I did convert a bunch of files to Word or pdf or both, and more recently I've converted some others, but I have something like 15 years worth of correspondence and other items, so it would be difficult to convert them all.

Thanks for the backup reminder. My external hard drive died earlier this week, and so I bought two new ones specifically so that I could backup before upgrading (and so I'd have a backup backup and never be without at least one backup again ).

Hello all,
I'm a newbie BB admin, I have one BES 4.1.6 server and 30 handhelds that I'm responsible for. I have been tasked with recommending whether or not we should upgrade the device software to the newest releases.
Of the mixed bag that we have, only 5 of the handhelds can be upgraded to version 4.5. The others can only go to 4.1.0.577, 4.2.1.101 and 4.2.2.353, based on the RIM website and Bell Mobility support.
Is this worth it? I looked and could not find any documentation on these versions - are there any benefits to upgrading? Or am I better off waiting until (maybe) 4.5 will be supported on these models?

ADVANTAGES FOR UPGRADING SNOW LEOPARD MOUNTAIN LION

I have a late 2010 Mac book Pro 13" 2.26 GHz 4 GB and I upgraded to Lion when it came out but I reverted back to Snow Leopard, my main use for my Mac is music I'm using Native Instruments Traktor Pro 2 software with the Traktor S4 controller hardware to continue upgrading my Traktor software I need upgrade to Mountain Lion, the Traktor software upgrades are not critical right now. Will there be problems skipping the Lion upgrade, I'm debating if there's any value to upgrade when everything is working fine. There seems to be a divided consensus for the Mountain Lion upgrade.

A simple suggestion, get yourself an external Firewire
HD (USB will be to slow), clone your current SL installation
to it, spend the $19.99 and install on that drive. Use it
for a while and if you are happy, clone the install back to
the internal drive. If not happy, wipe the external drive
and you have an additional backup or data drive (can never
have too many backups).
