Advantages of using Oracle with Unix over Windows server

Hi there,
I want some article/document which depicts the advantages of using Oracle with Unix (say HP-UX or Solaris backend). Actually the plan is to use some Data Warehousing applications using Cognos Poweplay, ReportNet and either Decision Stream of Cognos or Oracle Warehouse builder may be used as ETL tool. For Data mining applications we are planning to use SPSS Clementine. The Data volume will be substantial one. At present we are developing some prototype in Windows 2003 advanced environment. We are plaiing to use Risc server and RAID-5. Pl. advice some ideal architecture for us, as you know, it's typically a Govt. level application data (mostly archival data). The reports will be published using Report Net, Adhoc query etc, OLAP analysis will be done using Powerplay.

  • Using Oracle with Unix Cron

    Folks, hows everyone?.
    I am trying to go beyond SQL*Plus queries and teach myself some automation. Turned out to be a litle challenging. Can some one educate me on how to finish this task:
    I wish to automate the following report with crontab: pull data from HR account in Oracle and email it to [email protected] everyday at 6am.
    So, first, i wrote the following script, myqueryscript.sql, containing the query:
    spool /home/myname/myautoreport
    select * from hr;
    exit;
    /home/myname is my unix path and myautoreport directory to store a copy of results.
    Second, i wrote the following shell script, myshellscript, to execute myqueryscript.sql:
    /home/myname/sqlplus hr/psswd @/home/myname/myqueryscript
    third, I wrote the following crontab, mycronscript, to run the shell script:
    00 06 * * * "/home/myname/myshellscript"
    Finally, i submitted to crontab as:
    crontab mycronscript
    I didnt work. Am i missing something?.
    pls note: i am not the root in unix.
    Thanks,

    > Would you recommend this book on the basis of its contents table or any other
    books on the subject?
    Sorry - I'm not familiar with that author or that book. The most valuable Oracle "books" in my opinion are found at http://tahiti.oracle.com - the complete sets of all Oracle manuals from 8i to 10G.
    Many authors seem to only regurgitate Oracle manuals. The only Oracle book I've bought and considered as a worth every single cent, is Tom Kyte's Oracle Expert one-on-one.
    This goes into the very fundamental concepts of how to use Oracle correctly. It is a real eye opener.
    I am new to automation and wish to study it.What aspects of automation? It covers a very broad range of topics.
    Does automation in the way you described it, i.e. DBMS_JOB, depend on PL/SQL?Extensively. PL/SQL is a formal procedural language. It is as capable as Pascal, C or Java. Many seem to think in terms of PL/SQL as SQL plus some basic programming control structures. PL/SQL is not SQL. These are two different very languages.
    What makes it unique are:
    - it is a server side language running inside the Oracle database
    - it integrates so tightly with SQL that you can write SQL language statements in PL/SQL as if these are native to PL/SQL (which leads to the confusion thinking that PL/SQL is SQL)
    99% of all Oracle related code I write is PL/SQL. There is very little that you cannot do using PL/SQL. And Oracle is not just a capable database tier, it is just as capable as an application tier.
    When using Oracle, there is no need for a separate application tier like Weblogic, JBoss, etc. PL/SQL is in fact a lot more capable language for the application tier than Java or .NET.
    Simple example. One of the automation processes we have is to supply another system with delta changes from one of our databases. They wanted it in XML. They wanted it FTP'ed to their server. 100% of the code written for this is PL/SQL. From creating XML CLOBs in the database, to using FTP to transfer the contents of these CLOBs to their FTP server. With an APEX (Oracle Application Express) web application (also entirely PL/SQL) that provides for maintenance and administration of this automation.
    With less moving parts (not dealing with external processes and additional programming languages), Oracle PL/SQL applications are a lot quicker to develop, a lot easier to maintain, performant (it is very close to the data), and more robust.
    PL/SQL is a very critical core component in any automation and any application that uses the Oracle database.

  • What are the advantages of using Mac OS X over Windows 7?

    Thank you.

    I just would like to know what makes a windows 7's user willing to switch to Mac OS.
    Everything we say that Mac OS X does better will sound like fanboy hollow self serving praise of Mac OS X, because based on the written description you will be thinking to yourself that Windows can do that.  And a description that is very detailed will bore you (and everyone else) to sleep.
    You really need to spend time playing with Mac OS X.  If there is an Apple Store near you, go in, and spend several hours playing with one (or several) Macs over several days/weekends.  As long as the store is not too crowded the store staff will let you play as long as you like.  They will help you play or go away if you ask nicely.  I've spent hours in a Apple Stores, sometimes just playing, surfing, comparing, and sometimes talking to the staff when one wonders over and asks if they can help me.
    As to why some people switch.  Sometimes it is frustration with Windows.  Sometimes it is the bloatware installed on the systems by the manufactures that the users do not know how to get rid of.  Sometimes it is the basic App Suite, such as iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, etc... (iMovie really does make it very easy to generate family home movies).  Sometimes it is running away from the constant Malware and paying over and over again for an anti-virus package (although I'm told the stuff shipped with Windows these days is pretty good).  Sometimes it is because a family member forced it on them (Mac using kids that are frustrated trying to support Mom and Dad; Mom being 300 miles away can be a bummer with the system is out of service).  Sometimes they get a iPod/iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch and see how nicely it works, and start to wonder if maybe other Apple produces are this well made (iPod/iPhone/iPad/iPod Touchs are a gateway drug).
    There are as many reasons for why people switch as there are people that have switched.
    If you wish to find out if you have a reason, you really need to play with the Mac for an extended period of time and see if it suits you.  If it doesn't and you still feel like you need a change of pace, try a Linux distribution (Ubuntu for example).

  • Advantages of using oracle

    Hello guyz... I never even tried to use oracle in my projects.. but I am curious what are the advantages of using Oracle compared with the other database....

    plus the warm fuzzy feeling of creating employment for hungry Oracle DBAs :)
    Just kidding. Oracle is a good database to know just because it's used so much.
    So even if it weren't exceedingly powerful, stable, and versatile you'd still be doing yourself a disservice by not knowing at least something about it.

  • Advantages of using PI 7.1 over PI 7.0

    Hi All,
    I need to suggest to my client, the advantages of using PI 7.1 over PI 7.0, so that we can use the same for our development.
    Please dont send me the links from SDN, just suggest the advantages.
    Useful answers will be rewarded.
    Regards
    Ranjit

    Hi,
    PI 7.1 will be in rampup then - not global availibility
    when it will be available you will get an upgreade guide as always
    Currently PI 7.0 is only available for real time implementation. You could have the version of PI 7.1 from SDN, but that not for the real time implementation. Its limited only for individual usage.
    There is huge difference between PI 7.0 and PI 7.1.
    1. PI 7.0 is the part of Netweaver 2004s and PI 7.1 is key entity in eSOA.
    2. PI 7.1 have various mapping Enhancements as well as reusability of UDFs across the mappings etc. which is not available in PI 7.0
    /people/william.li/blog/2008/01/02/sap-pi-71-mapping-enhancements-series-share-user-defined-functions
    3. PI 7.1 comes with the concept of folders for more flexibale and Organized way of developements.
    /people/william.li/blog/2007/08/07/using-folders-in-pi-71 -- Folders in PI 7.1
    4. Advanced adapter engine is used in PI 7.1, which have overcome the various communication related limitations of previous versions

    Hi,
    There are various differences between the two.
    1. SQL Server is only Windows, but Oracle runs on almost all Platforms.
    2. You can have multiple databases in SQL Server, but Oracle provides you only one database per instance.Given that the very term 'database' has s different meaning in the two products, this "difference" is absolutely meaningless.
    3. SQL Server provides T-SQL for writing programs, whereas Oracle provides PL/SQLWhich means what? Both products have a procedural programming language. They named them differently, and the languages are not interchangeable. Means nothing in comparing the features/strengths/weaknesses/suitability to purpose.
    4. Backup types in both are the same. (Except Oracle provides an additional backup called Logical Backup.)You make that sound like "Logical Backup" is something more than it is. It is nothing more than an export of the data and metadata. Many experts don't even consider it a backup. I'm sure SQL Server provides the same functionality though they probably call it by some other name.
    5. Both provide High Availability.Well, I guess they both have a suite of features they refer to as "High Availability". But what does that really mean? The devil is in the details. Remember, the two products don't even agree on what constitutes a "database".
    6. Both come in various distributions.???
    >
    If you are going for an Implementation, you can try SQL Server Express Edition and Oracle XE which are free to use.
    Then you can choose whichever is comfortable for your needs.
    Thanks.

  • Are there any advantages of using Secure Empty Trash over regular Empty Trash?

    Are there any advantages of using Secure Empty Trash over regular Empty Trash?

    If you are going to run around with sensitive files on your file system, you might be better off using a whole disk encryption so that every file is encrypted, any deleted file contains encrypted contents.  As long a no one can access your files using your encrytpion keys, all your data is secure.
    Also secure delete is not really going to do much on a Solid State Drive, and again whole disk encryption would be a better choice.
    For a moderate amount of data, secure erase does not take too much time. But if you have a ton of file and/or a few really large files to erase, secure erase can take a long time to complete as it is doing multiple pass to write and overwrite the file's storage with patterns of data that make it extremely difficult to recover the original data.  That takes time.
    Finally, if you have been updating a document, previous editions may have been given over to free storage as new versions are written, such that when you decide to erase the file you may only be doing secure erase on the most recent copy.

  • Question for using ORACLE with SOLARIS

    Hi Experts,
    I have worked Oracle with Linux in one of my projects 2yrs back and i was just a developer, used to write SQL Query, Creating Table and Objects.
    Now i got a question from TL which is
    Tell me about consequences for using Oracle with Solaris?
    I am not worked ORACLE with SOLARIS, Can some one give me the answer for this question with
    1. Difference between ORACLE with LINUX and ORACLE with SOLARIS.
    2. Advantages and Disadvantages Between ORACLE with LINUX and ORACLE with SOLARIS.
    Thanks,
    MuraliDharan V

    Hi MuraliDharan V,
    It would had been better if you had searched first;
    Here is one
    Advantage for Linux64-bit Versus Solaris-x86_64 OS in RAC
    And beside that your question is incomplete:
    -What Oracle? Database, etc
    -Which Version? 9i, 10g, etc
    Aside from that a simple search on google might have answered your question as well.
    But I think there is some new trend of dumping questions here before searching.

  • Advantages of using a Data Template over an RDF

    Hi All,
    Can anyone help me to understand what are the advantages of using a Data Template over an RDF while developing an XML Publisher Report ?
    Regards,
    Shruti

    Hi Sruthi,
    you can merge n number of SQL Quries in a singe Data Template.
    suppose you have column say Partner Name in which u have made Prompt. now lets say based on the partner name prompt, fileds need to change in the reoprt ie; (different sql Quries) in this case we can use data template.

  • Oracle 10g install on Windows server 2008 R2 ( 6.1 )

    Hi All,
    I am trying to install Oracle 10g over windows server 2008 R2 (6.1) but it gives error that OS is not supported. I tried to install below version.
    Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.4.0)
    Enterprise/Standard Edition for Microsoft Windows Vista x64, Windows Server 2008 x64,
    Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 x64, Windows 7 x64
    But it fails with error that OS version 6.1 is not supported. On download page it is written to get 10.2.0.5 patch from My Oracle support for windows server 2008 R2, I got patch p8202632_10205_MSWIN-x86-64 but it requires a pre-installed oracle home.
    So how should I install Oracle 10g as 10.2.0.4 does not get installed and the patch asks for a previous install?
    The reason I am installing Oracle 10g is that our Java application is running in production over JDK 1.4 and Oracle 11g does not provide JDBC driver for JDK 1.4, is there any JDBC driver for Oracle 11g that can work with JDK 1.4?
    Thanks in advance for help.
    Best Regards!

  • Oracle 11g Client for Windows Server 2008 Relase2 Operating Stystem

    Hi,
    I am having a server with Operating System as Windows Server 2008 R2 version 64 - bit.
    I am using SSRS 2008 which is 64 bit, for retreiving the data from Oracle (which is 11g - 32 bit), I am unable to create data source for Oracle.
    I had installed ODAC Components of Oracle 11.1.0.7.20 on the server, but still I am getting the following error:
    "The 'OraOLEDB.Oracle.1' provider is not registered on the local machine."
    Does any one know how to install Oracle Client 11g on Windows Server 2008 R2 Operating system?

    Helios,
    It is wonderful that you are polite and encouraging to new people.
    While you are responding, could you explicitly direct people to use the correct forum. This has at least 2 benefits:
    1) Ensures that the person gets the widest possible amount of assistance;
    2) Ensures that the rest of us do not need to waste time on improperly placed questions.
    I suggest 'explicitly' since some people do not get the hint, and keep returning to the original thread.
    This thread belongs in 'Database - General' or 'Database - Install'.

    11.2 is beta at the moment. There is no official release date so far.
    As DG4ODBC is independant from the Oracle database (or the target database) you can use a 3 machine model:
    On the first machine you have your Oracle database, on a second machine running 32bit Windows you can install DG4ODBC and on the 3rd machine you can run your foreign database.
    If the SQL Server 2k is installed on a 32bit Windows machine, then you can also install DG4ODBC on this machine.
    In general the connection from an Oracle database to the DG4ODBC machine is done using SDQL*Net. The listener responsible for DG4ODBC will then load the DG4ODBC executable which will connect to the SQL Server using SQL Server ODBC driver.

  • When will Oracle 10g/11g support Windows Server 2008 and AIX6.1

    Hi all
    I'm sorry if I post it in a wrong place... But I really want to know when will Oracle 10g/11g support Windows Server 2008 and AIX 6.1?
    I've searched in metalink but found nothing useful. Is there anybody can give me a link of Oracle's roadmap for platform support?
    Thanks!

    Oracle does not announce release dates and neither
    does any other software company. But Oracle does have a very good track record of supporting their products on new windows releases extremely close to the windows release date. Clearly they can't support on an unreleased platform though. Given that the launch of Server 2008 isn't even complete worldwide yet (19th March in the UK for example) it would seem that this enquiry is a little premature.

  • Can I use WindowsAzure NuGet package for Windows Server development?

    Which Nuget package should I be using when developing a service that uses the Service Bus for Windows Server 1.1?
    I've been using the 'ServiceBus.v1_1' package up to now, but on a whim tried using the 'WindowsAzure.ServiceBus' package and that appears to be working for a basic program:
    var namespaceManager = NamespaceManager.Create();
    var messagingFactory = MessagingFactory.Create();
    var sub = messagingFactory.CreateQueueClient("queue");
    sub.RegisterSessionHandler(typeof(MySessionHandler));
    The reason I want to use this is as above - I want to use the RegisterSessionHandler feature to manage my sessions for me, but this functionality appears to be missing in the Service Bus 1.1 package.
    If I avoid using the newer, unsupported Azure features, should I be safe using this package?

    I can't speak to teh display quality of Office for Windows 2010 on a Retina display, but I'm successfully running Parallels 8 with Windows XP and Office 2010 - no problems with VBA at all.
    But let's hear from the Retina owners - I wouldn't think that you'd have any problems.
