Advantages to having Windows XP on my iMac

I'm thinking about installing Windows XP on my intel iMac using the software program Parallels. But before I do, can anybody here tell me what the advantages are of having Windows XP on my iMac? I don't have anything against Windows, I just want to know what is the difference between the two operating systems. What can I do in XP, that I can't in OS X?
Sorry if this is the wrong group to post in.
Thank you.

Charles:
I can tell you why I installed Windows on my Mac and this is simply my opinion. My work atmosphere is 100% in Windows. We use Microsoft Office products along with proprietary software which ONLY runs on the Windows platform. I am not willing to use Office for Mac at home and then play the convert from here to there game. I also like MS Money which is not available for a Mac and I am not willing to use Quicken etc.
Finally, the Windows platform (right or wrong) has a HUGE selection of software. I don't wish to take anything away from Apple however given my needs and requirements, it became imperative that if I were to own a Mac then it must be able to run Windows also. Allows me to get the best of both worlds.
I think the answer to your question must come from you as you know which software you use and may use in the near future. If Leopard suffices your needs then fine and if it doesn't then you have an option to load Windows.

  • I want to install windows 7 on my iMac..

Ok so ive been thinking about installing windows XP, Vista, or maybe even windows 7 on my iMac. The only problem is, i just got a mac and i dont know too much about it (slowly learning though) and i dont want to overwhelm myself. Ive seen tutorials on how to install windows using bootcamp, but what i want to know is how can i uninstall/delete the partition and have everything back to normal if i end up wanting to take windows off my iMac? And how hard would it be?

It's easy to remove a BootCamp partition.
    Some other comments:
    1) Besides the BootCamp option, there are at least two programs that let you run Windows under Mac OS X without having to reboot between them: VMware Fusion (http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/) and Parallels Desktop (http://www.parallels.com/en/download/desktop/).
    2) BootCamp hasn't yet been updated to support Windows 7. Most things should work, but it's not guaranteed.
    3) You might find this electronic book useful: http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/windows-on-mac for USD10, currently discounted 50% to USD5. (I have no financial relation with the Take Control people.)

  • How do I run Windows programs on my iMac and my MiniMac?

I have a new iMac and a new MiniMac at the office. Can I run Windows programs on these computers, such as QuickBooks? If so, how do I do it?

If you want to run MS Windows applications on your iMac and Mac Mini you need a license of MS Windows at a minimum. Then you need to decide how you want to run the apps, you can use Boot Camp which allows you to install MS Windows on your computer and then boot your computer as either a MS Windows machine or OS X machine. The advantage of this is there is no cost (except for MS Windows) as Boot Camp comes with every Mac. You will find Boot Camp Setup Assistant in (Applications - Utilities - Boot Camp Setup Assistant). The other solution is virtualization software such as Parallels or VM Ware Fusion. The advantage of virtualization software is you can run MS Windows and OS X simultaneously. This is ideal if you are not doing graphics intensive applications such as 3D gaming, CAD/CAM or 3D renderings. For applications like QuickBooks it would be great.
The downside of running MS Windows on your Mac is that portion of the computer will be susceptible to all the problems PC's have such as Virus's and other malware. So whatever solution you get you need to also get anti-virus software and other anti-malware. The upside is if Windows becomes diseased this in no way affects OS X.
Finally your best solution is to look for OS X versions of your applications. I know there is a OS X version of QuickBooks however I have no idea how Intuit's licensing works, you would need to contact Intuit to ask that question.

  • How do i run windows 8 on my imac

how do i run windows 8 on my imac ?
I have several engineering programs which have bee written for windows
I have heard that boot camp does the job. Does anyone have first hand experience?

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows 7 or Windows 8.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. A more recent comparison of Parallels, VM Fusion, and Virtual Box is found at Virtualization Benchmarks- Parallels 10 vs. Fusion 7 vs. VirtualBox. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard and later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Have a 1st generation Apple TV, which is not showing as a device in iTunes. Had no problems with Apple TV until I changed from a Windows PC to an iMac. I have changed my IP address, sub mask address and router address in the Apple TV, Can anyone help?

I have a 1st generation apple TV, which was working perfectly until I changed from a Windows PC to a Imac. The Apple TV will not show in Itunes. I have changed the IP address, sub mask  and Router IP address. Since changing I have switched everything of and on again. Can anyone help?

I have a new router and computer. I have just remembered that just before my old PC died on me, I transferred my iTunes library to a hard drive. I can't remember exactly just how I got my library back, but there are definately things in my library now that were in my library on my old PC! Hope this makes sense. What do you mean by same location? Do you mean in the same place in the house?
Another difference I have just thought of was my old router was connected directly to the computer bu I have not been able to do this with Sky as my PC is not near a phone socket! Will this make a difference?

    Hi
I am planning to install window 7 on my imac ( version - ox mountaion loin - 10.8.2,  purchase this year in may 2012) but before installing the same pls let me know what i would required means - is there required any special  software or  hardware.... or is there any different cd for mac windows.....
    Thanks,
    Punit Garg

    You require Windows 7.
Windows 7 is the same and will run the same as it would on a Windows computer. All programs that run on a windows computer will run on your Windows once installed. You will need anti virus software for your Windows partition. Microsoft Security Essentials is free and it works well.
Read the help files before installing http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/.

  • How can I use windows software on the IMac

How can I use windows software on my iMac? I know I can partition the hard drive but do I need to buy Windows OS?

You can use Boot Camp, which comes with your Mac and install a copy of Windows on a new partition, or you can use a virtual application like Parallels.

  • How can i run wireless internet when using windows xp on my imac?

I recently installed Windows XP on my imac using Boot Camp, everything works great except the internet. ive been looking but i have found no way to get the internet to work via my wireless connection, or is it just not possible?
Could it be that i am missing some drivers? Anyone know where i can get them?
Sorry if im asking too much stuff.
    Thanks in advance

Depending on the wireless base station brand and specifications,
you may have to set up the Windows system to find & use it...
    Just about the same as setting up any Windows PC to go online;
except, if you have an Apple base station...
If you have an AirPort base station, there are updates for Windows
to help use that access point, from your Mac, running Windows.
An example, but not necessarily the correct answer, in the following:

    Hi Jorg ,
Are you trying to reduce the file size with the "Reduced size PDF" in the save as other option.
Give it a try if you haven't done it prior.

  • I currently run Windows 7 on my iMac using the Parallels software on a Virtual Machine. I now wish to use Windows through bootcamp. How do I remove windows from the Virtual Machine

I currently run Windows 7 on my Imac through a Virtual Machine format with the Parallels software. I now wish to remove Windows from the VM restore the Hard Drive to a single partition then install windows 7 using bootcamp. How do I go about it

The virtual machine isn't a partition on your hard drive, it's just a file. You can delete the vm by going into Paralells preferences or just drag t to the trash. Bootcamp will partition your hard drive for a Win 7 install.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Boot Camp Support Software 5.0.5033 supports Windows 8.1 and can be used with that version. The Mid 2011 iMac is compatible with Windows 8, so you should not have any problem by installing Windows 8.
