ADVC-100 Capturing...

Hello all,
Yes, yes another question from Benny P. Now that I've finished my most recent project in the DV format, I am now swooped into my next project. This time using Analog footage (WHY?). I asked a question not too long ago and was told I needed the Canopus ADVC-110.
It arrived today and am ready to test it out. I set up my FireWire to my Mac and connected the power source to the converter. Opened up Log & Capture and the footage is there previewing in Log & Capture Preview window. It looks fine. So I go into Capture Now and after maybe 3 seconds or so, FCP tells me that the camera has reached the end of the tape. The Capture Now window closes and a short maybe 2-3 second clip is left in my Browser. It has not reached the end of the tape because after Capture Now closes the video contiunes to play thru the camera.
I close FCP, power down the ADVC-110, restart my Mac and plug into a different FireWire port. Now FCP doesn't show me a preview of what I'm capturing in the preview window. Restarted again, put it back into the original FireWire port and restarted the converter. Still with the same results.
Does it have something to do with my Easy Setups? I read somewhere that a custom preset needs to be created in order to capture from the device. Is this true?
Thanks so much...

You need to set Device Control to UNCONTROLLED DEVICE.

  • ADVC 100 not capturing in Tiger-new

    Hi
Bob hope you're monitoring. Did a search prior to posting but removing and reinstalling as per instructions did not change things. I'm trying to capture audio only through my ADVC 100. Settting my settings to audio only and device control to (non controllable device) and I get FCP was unable to capture upon hitting the esc key. When I switch to device control (Firewire NTSC) the window clears upon the ESC key but nothing appears in the browser. In the past I remember that my Sony DV-1? required a video signal playing even though there was audio only captured so I tried hooking up the analog video signal out from my DV cam to the video in on the ADVC. Still no luck. Any ideas?

AFAIK, You probably need a VIDEO signal when capturing DV thru FW. DV has the audio muxed with the video in its raw form. Have you tried feeding any video signal thru? Just the blue screen of an untuned VCR might be enough to get you going...

  • Capture from ADVC -100

I am trying to capture video from My Canopus ADVC-100, which is hooked up to a VHS VCR. I am having no sucess. I used to do it with an older computer and a previous version of FCP. Have things changed? What settings can I use?
I have an Imac 2.4 GHz Intel core Duo 4 GB ram.
    Thank you

That hasn't changed in years. You use the correct DV NTSC or PAL preset with device control set to non-controllable device. Make sure the ADVC box is set to output DV.

  • CS4 crashes when capturing via ADVC-100

I have been successfully using CS4 to capture from my Canon HV20 camcorder.
Today I tried to capture old VHS video using a Canopus ADVC-100 analog to DV converter. This has always worked perfectly when I was using Premiere Pro 1.5.
With the ADVC-100 connected, as soon as I hit F5 to open the capture window, CS4 crashes with a blue screen and IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I have tried capturing several times with the same result.
Is this a known bug and is there a workaround available.

wondering why you use the canopus any way. From the canon web site:
Analog Digital Image Converter: This function lets you feed the analog signal from your TV, VCR or analog camcorder to your HV20 to convert to digital for recording on DV tape. The HV20 can also be used as a signal converter by connecting it between an analog device and another digital device.
In other words, ditch the canopus.

  • Capturing using Canopus ADVC-100 No Power via Firewire

I recently purchased a used Canopus ADVC-100 to use to convert Hi-8 tapes.  I'm using a 6 pin to 9 pin connection to my iMac.  There are no lights on the ADVC-100, so I'm assuming it is not getting power from the iMac.  I do not have an external power supply to test the ADVC-100.  The iMac/FCPX is not recognizing the device, so it's not a case of a burned out light.  Any help welcomed.   Thanks

Thanks for the reply.  I was relying on this bulletin from Grass Valley:
    http://www.grassvalley.com/docs/Application_Notes/professional/advc/PRV-4077M_AD VC_FireWire800_AN.pdf
Looks like I read it incorrectly.  Any leads on the proper power supply?  Mine did not come with one.

  • ADVC-100 problems

I'm off from work for a few weeks. I've been wanting to transfer old vhs tapes to DVD for a long time. Maybe about 3 years or so, I purchased the ADVC-100 to convert analog to digital. Worked like a charm. I also purchased an VHS to DVD direct copy machine. That worked also.
Time passes and I've since upgrded to a the latest macbook pro. I decided to use it with FCE and do the good dead.
#1 - the CD player on the VHS/DVD is kaput. Major not happy, hardly used it and it just isn't doing anything. But that's ok, I don't mind the route of digitizing video to my 16TB NAS for manipulation and such with FCE
#2- My FCE won't recognize the ADVC-100. So frustrating
I verified under system stuff that the firewire is seeing the FW connection, which it is. I can directly plug the VHS into another tuner and play on the TV. So that takes some frustration away since we can at least watch them. But I would like to start a long process of digitizing them, clipping together themes, cute moments, all that stuff.
For whatever reason, I cannot get my G5 or Macbook pro to play/work with the ADVC-100. I can go to preferences/sounds and see that there are internal sounds being registered. Can't get them to play in anyway through either computer, but they are registered at the input. Sound works great on a TV
I've gone to the easy set up and drived DV=NTSC firewire basic, DV-NTSC DV converter, and the DV-NTSC. No luck. Some will actually show the buttons ont he capture screen but there are nothing but colored lines (stationary) When the buttons appear, a message appears below them that says "VTR OK". I've tried to capture clips anyway, but nothing occurs.
I recall having some of these problems in the past. I kept trying and trying and somehwre it would just magically work. No such luck anymore.
My switch settings on the ADVC-100 are all set to off position. I have tried various different switch positions as I read many different articles all over the internet.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? For whatever reason, both the new and old mac can detect it is there, can show the internal "in" sound channel registring the sound, but can't play the sound and I cannot get video to show in any configuration.
    Thanks,
    Robert

Thank you for your input and questions.
I changed VCR's just to make sure that wasn't a factor as the original one was acting a bit strange. This second VCR is a basic play only VCR. Tape in, verify it is running on the TV fine. Then move it over to the computer area. Use the red/white/yellow (composite or RCA jack?) connectors out from the VCR. Only contains out, no input on the VCR
Then connect the color coding to the input of the ADVC-100 on the front panel marked input.
The back panel has the outputs. I used the red/white only and have them plugged into a stereo adapter so that they can be plugged into the back of the powermac G5 audio input.
I am using a firewire 400 connecting from the back of the ADVC-100 to the back of the G5
Dip switches on the bottom of the ADVC-100 are set to NTSC, 7.5 IRE, Audio "locked", Audio 48khz 16bits, power on input mode "analog", and input selector mode: manual.
NOTE: I have carefully turned off the ADVC-100 and tried every possible combination of switch settings. I followed the instructions initially, which are quite simple, but when that didn't work, I decided "what the heck, try 'em all," so I did. No change.
I've tried quicktime, iMovie, and FCE. They all display a similar pattern.
iMovie: will show the pop-up screen for importing and shows it is seeing the advc-100 in the bottom left corner of the screen. Screen remains blue despite what I do.
FCE: set to DV-NTSC under easy settings, shut down program restarted and made a new project (did this multiple times). Under capture, screen pops up as usual. In the center bottom, shows "VTR OK" It shows colored bars. Decided on occasions to go ahead and put "now" and it indicates "waiting for timecode. Device must be in VTR mode when Device Control is enabled (press 'esc' to abort)
Quicktime pops open a window that remains blue and indicates it is ready to record. Nothing happens though.
I used to use this set up, maybe 5 years ago to transfer VHS or HI-8 mm tapes to the computer. I don't recall it being such a pain. This is the same computer, same ADVC-100 and so forth.
    ok, did I forget anything?
    Any suggestions?
    I do appreciate your help.

iMac can capture a DVR Sound and Video from recorded DVD via ADVC-100.
Sound and Video come in fine with FCE & iMovie.
Can't seem to get sound to come in {or out} with QT Pro.
Preferences are set to ADVC-100 and iMic USB {just as they are for the applications that work}.
I'm using the same disk in all attempts.
Am I missing a CODEC or or a setting or something? Tried Good Better and Device Native....hmmm

No. QuickTime Pro can't crop video.
    MPEG Streamclip (free) can.

  • Canopus ADVC 100 with Final Cut Express HD?

Hi! I'm upgrading my G5 at work to Mac OS 10.4, as well as some of my apps. I'm currently using Final Cut Express 1.0 on Mac OS 10.3.8 to capture DV video via firewire with a Canopus ADVC 100. I notice this device isn't listed in the compatibility docs of FC Express HD. Does anyone know if it will work? Or can I still run Final Cut Express 1.0 on Mac OS 10.4?
    Thanks!

My Canopus 100 works perfectly with FCE3 HD

  • Will old Canopus ADVC-100 work on 2010 imac?

    HI There
    I am running 10.6.8, have a 2010 imac 27" with 8gb ram
I want to start importing my video footage into either imovie or FCP connecting an old VHS to my Canopus ADVC-100 and then the Canopus to the mac
I am guessing i just need a firewire converter or something? Can someone advise which cable i need?
The Canopus has the small and normal firewire ports of the past (see manual here: http://finearts.uvic.ca/sim/equipment/manuals/_av_convert/advc100.pdf)
I haven't had any need for this new firewire port on the back and wondered if i invested in a firewire converter it would work or whether the hardware is too old for the imac?
Sorry if this is a daft question
    regards..

I'm not sure why there would be conflicts.  The ouput of the ADVC is pure DV video, that's the beauty of the ADVC, it doesn't need any proprietary drivers or capture applications like most USB solutions do, so it isn't really OS dependent in any way.  As long as your application understands DV cameras you should be OK.  I've used my ADVC-55 with Snow Leopard before and am now using it with Lion, with iMovie.

  • Should iMovie11 be able to import VCR tapes using Canopus ADVC-100

I think the answer is yes. However, in my case there seems to be a hiccup. The Canopus screen opens okay and import commences, as confirmed by the red light in the timer recorder and the time running up. Unfortunately, importing stops at 2 seconds with manual input selected and 1 minute with automatic selected. From the saved events, the manually imported DV file will not play because of its insufficient length and the automatically imported one plays back for the 1 minute. I have checked the settings and connections and all are okay but something is awry.
A forum search appears to say  the ADVC-100 and iMovie 11 are not compatible but the fact that 1 minute of tape can be transferred successfully suggests iotherwise.
Are there any suggestions on what may be at fault ?

    Bradley.Suiter wrote:
Problem Solved. It would have helped if I'd checked the Analogue/Digital Button on the front of the Canopus first. Was set to digital when I was importing analogue.

  • Viewing on external monitor with ADVC-100 and s video

I am trying to view my canvas on a external monitor. I have a canopus ADVC-100 and i am using the firewire input and the s video as the output in the back. When I try to set it up and i select view all frames, but when i go to the video output menu it says my firewire device is missing. Any hints or tips on what i am doing wrong. I am using the s-video because the monitor only has a components input available, the RCA's are already occupied.

Is the ADVC powered? When you connect firewire to the back of the unit, it gets powered by that connector, but the firewire jack on the front is only 4-pin and doesn't support power.
If you have a 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable, try connecting it to the back of the ADVC110 and then the front of the box should light up, indicating power.
I'm having a similar issue. I can print to tape via the Canopus box, but I want to be able to drive a monitor with it just so I can have an NTSC monitor while I'm editing. I can't seem to make it work. Any ideas?

  • ADVC-55 capture device

Helping a director make a showreel for an awards ceremony.  A lot of his films are on VHS.  He has an ADVC-55 (Canopus) to grab the VHS and convert to digital signal ...
I can't get FCP to 'see' the non-controllable device.  I've worked with variations on this device over the years, they're always a bit funky.
Wondering if anyone has worked with this particular device ... and if you can suggest some click I might be missing in FCP so that it isn't reading the device??
My second related question would be ... these things were originally designed to create a DV signal, which we always captured in FCP as DV NTSC.  I'm curious to know if there is any way one could capture the signal with ProRes (HQ) NTSC ... or some slightly higher resolution.  Some of these VHS' look fairly clean, and of a better resolution than the DV NTSC.  Though I may be imagining this.
    All ears,
    Ben

    Hi
I have the big brother to this - and for two reasons (Canopus ADVC-300)
    • Can return material back to Analog (VHS etc)
    • Have a very important function to me - TimeBase correction
    - Imports do not halt on drop outs
    - Drop outs doesn't set Audio out of sync
(for VHS tapes recorded in LP-mode (8-hours) this is Vital to work)
My list on - No Camera or A/D-box connection - Lot's to cheque ! (goes for iMovie and FINAL CUT)
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera or A/D-box work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • DVX 100 Capture Problem 23.98

We have shot footage at 24 p (Not 24pA). I can't seem to capture the material properly without either getting duplicate frames or interlacing. What is the correct FCP capture setting and sequence setting to have the frames play smoothly with no dropped frames, duplicate frames, or interlacing?
    Jon

24p is simulated film look running at 30fps...there will be duplicate frames. Just like when you telecine film to tape, some frames are duplicated.
    For your reading pleasure...
Differences between 24p and 24pA in DV
Quoting Graeme Nattress' article found at Ken Stone's site:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/24p_in_FCPnattress.html
    "24p Normal
When shooting in 24p Normal, the camera is adding normal standard 3:2 pulldown to the video, which results in 24p footage designed to work with any non-linear editing suite and it will play back and look good directly to any NTSC monitor. You can use 24p Normal footage just like normal video from any DV camera, and everything will work fine, but obviously, the footage will have a film look to it. If you’re just going straight back to NTSC video tape, then using 24p Normal is the simplest, easiest workflow. No special treatment of the footage is needed and you really can just edit as normal.
    24p Advanced
Before you shoot 24p Advanced, you should fully understand it’s workflow implications. If you watch 24p Advanced footage before you’ve removed it’s pulldown, then it will look a bit jumpy and jerky. This is totally correct, because 24p Advanced is not designed to be viewed as is.
To use 24p Advanced and gain all it’s advantages, you should know that you cannot edit it as is (as this would leave it’s jerky looking pulldown intact), but you must first remove it’s pulldown. Final Cut Pro will do this for you, leaving you with the 24p footage without any of the extra “padding” fields that are added to make it’s frame rate 29.97fps. Now that your footage is 23.98fps, it must be edited on a 23.98fps timeline, and this can cause problems if you, for instance, want to include other footage, B-Roll, or stock footage, that comes from a different source. However, once you have your finished edit at 23.98fps, you can make a 24p DVD, which will allow you to compress your MPEG2 less than if you were making a normal 29.97fps NTSC DVD, and hence attain higher picture quality. Similarly, if you’re making a web movie, you will find it easier to get a higher quality result from 23.98fps media than normal NTSC media. 23.98fps movies are also easier to take out to film that 29.97fps movies.
If you are editing in a 23.98fps timeline, Final Cut Pro will add pulldown on the fly, over Firewire, so that you can see your movie on a normal NTSC monitor. Similarly, it will add pulldown when going back to DV tape. However, this will not work on a non-DV format output, say to Digital Betacam, and slower Macintoshes do not have the power to add 3:2 pulldown in realtime, falling back to lower quality pulldowns which although are not too bad while editing, will not make the final project look as acceptably good on television as a final product."
What that tells me is that 24P just adds a "look" of 24 fps to the footage that resembles that of telecined film, but that you work with normally at 29.97fps. Or, if you want to, you can add a reverse telecine and work at 23.98. Either way.
BUT, with 24PA, the footage looks jittery when played on the tape. So sure, you can work with it and output it to tape, but that tape is useless to anyone OTHER than someone who can capture it and perform a reverse telecine to work with it. It will not work as a Master tape for any viewable purpose: Broadcast TV, projected video from tape, a master tape for dubbing purposes. So, in effect, it is useless as a tape master, and should be avoided.
If you happen to have a 23.98 sequence and need to output a 29.97 master, any good capture card (www.aja.com, www.decklink.com) will add the proper pulldown when it outputs.

  • Corrupted QuickTime file

    Hi All,
    Here's my problem.
Last night I was capturing a live A/V performance using "New Movie Recording" in QT PRO. Hooked via firewire to my laptop (PowerBook G4, 1ghz) I had a Canopus ADVC-100 capture card. I used the "Good (MPEG-4)" settings in the recording preferences. All was fine and I ran some tests before the main recording which all worked well. I was recording to an 7200rpm external LaCie hard-drive, with at least 80GB of free space.
The recording was all fine, though quite long at around 3 hours. The final file size has come in at around 400meg.
I was able to stop the recording at the end of the show however before I was able to save the QT file, my external hard-drive was accidentally unplugged by someone a little too keen on packing up after the show. The drive naturally dissapeared and subsequently the QT file has been corrupted . When I try to open it, I now get the "Error Opening Movie - This movie could not be opened" dialogue.
I can see the QT file on the hard-disk, and when I 'get info' on the file I can see that it's 407 megs large. The OS is seeing the .MOV file fine, icon and so on, and still attempts to open the file in QT when launching out of the finder.
My question; is there some way of repairing the file so that I can get QT to play it? I thought an application like Autodesk's 'Cleaner' might help, however I don't own a copy of it, and am unlikey to buy it just to recover this file.

    Hi, bozzah
    I probably can do it.
    I will need two things:
A sample of your corrupted file and a 10 seconds good recording done with the exact same settings as the corrupted file.
Drop me an email and I explain you the details.
    Regards, BJ
