ADVC100 vs Decklink Extreme

Hi,
I know this is a sort of dumb question, but before making an investment, I would like to make sure.
We currently use a Canopus ADVC100 to capture video from a BetaSP (using the S-Video input). Because of that, we have to caputre using DV, which as far as I know, already compresses the data. We're now about to buy a Decklink Extreme to replace de ADVC100, and my plan is to start capturing from the BetaSP, using Uncompressed 10-bit.
The only use I have for the videos I capture is to export them to MPEG2 on Compressor and then use them on DVD Studio Pro. When I switch to Decklink, will the quality of my videos really increase? Can I expect a better MPEG2 when compressing from the 10-bit source, as compared to the DV source?
Thanks a lot!

When I switch to Decklink, will the quality of my videos really increase?
Absolutely. You will be importing footage at 8-bit uncompressed or 10-bit...and they are FAR BETTER than DV/NTSC. A world of difference. Mind you now, you will need to capture to secondart internal SATA Drives, or external SATA Raids or FW800 drives. FW400 will no longer cut it.
Can I expect a better MPEG2 when compressing from the 10-bit source, as compared to the DV source?
Yes. Expecially where color correction, titles and graphics are concerned. Working with a 4:2:2 color space is far superior to the 4:1:1 5:1 compression of DV.

  • Understanding the way to connect a MDD to BlackMagic Decklink Extreme card

    Hi,
I require some help in the following:
I recently bought myself a Blackmagic DeckLink Extreme™ with 10bit SDI/analog video and audio capture card.
Looking at the specs, http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/sd/specs/, can someone give me directions as to the best setup I can do from the following sources and what other equipment I may require to achieve it.
    - mono stereo audio VHS -> has 1 video/audio in and 1 video/audio out (composite connections)
    - stereo audio video camera -> has 1 8 pin S-Video out port to composite connections (Hi8 tape type)
    - DVD player -> has composite 2 x 2ch stereo audio out, 1 x 5.1ch stereo audio out, 2 x video out, 1x component video out, 2 x S-video out, 2 x digital audio out; 1 x RCA/OPT
    - 2 x 23" monitors connected by ADC and DVI connections to a Apple MDD G4, may relay to 60" Plasma for video monitoring from video card prior to creating DVD final piece for playback.
Basically, I wanted to have multiple source inputs and outputs, but I'm having difficulty in understanding the setup. Please refer to http://www.blackmagic-design.com/downloads/connections/decklinkdiagram.pdf page 5/6.
I purchased the following from JayCar

-- B-Y IN (from deck) --> DVD Pb port
-- R-Y IN (from deck) --> DVD Pr port

I want to buy a hard disk (not a NAS device) and plug it into my Airport Extreme in order to share data between two Mac computers, and to stream iTunes content to my Apple TV.
One option is to purchase a hard drive (say, a 2TB Hitachi G-Technology drive) and connect it to the USB port on the back of the Apple Extreme. The other option is to purchase a drive with an ethernet connection (say, a 2TB Lacie drive) and connect it to an ethernet port on the Apple Extreme.
In the second case what you'd have actually is a NAS. Apple's AirPort routers aren't known for fast file sharing. The NAS option might be faster.
Is either option better for streaming movies from the hard drive to my Apple TV?
I could be wrong, but an AppleTV may not be able to access content directly from a network drive. It may require that a Mac serve as an intermediary.

  • Outputting via SDI to DigiBeta thru Blackmagic Decklink Extreme

I'm running Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 on MacOS 10.4.8. I've edited a 23.98FPS - DVCPro50 sequence. I can preview using the Decklink Extreme card fine. I can output via compenent out to a regular beta deck (UVW-1800) just fine, which is also the deck I use for monitoring while I am editing. I plug the SDI output from the decklink card into our digibeta deck (DVW-A500). I also send the audio over SDI. I see both the audio and video in my digibeta deck. If I just PLAY the sequence out, the digibeta sees and hears it fine. No problems.
This is my problem. Whenever I try to 'edit to tape' it usually starts out fine... then I get A LOT of digital drop outs / squares / digital distortion on the digibeta. They come up randomly and it also digitally distorts the audio when you play the tape back.
The digibeta deck is fine, as we use it to output via our Avid Media Composers every day...no dropouts or problems. It has to be with FCP / DeckLink Card when you try an 'edit to tape'. I've also tried a 'print to video' with the same results. Have you guys heard of this problem at all? Hopefully you have a fix for me...
    thanks.

Awesome - the Out Ref fix did it!
When I did the edit to tape I tried both insert editing and assemble editing - both ended up the same.
On a side discussion - how do you sync the FCP machine with the black burst generator? I'm still a bit new to this - what exactly does the genlock do on the Decklink Extreme card? Is this where I sync with the black burst?
I assume the digibeta deck will also get synced with the same black burst generator. Does this go into the reference input on the back?
    Thanks for your help,

  • Help outputting using Panasonic AJ-SD955 / Blackmagic Decklink Extreme

    Hello to all,
Anyone out there able to walk me through connecting and outputting to a Panasonic AJ-SD955 and getting a reference signal? I am using a Decklink Blackmagic Extreme Card and FCP 5.0.4. I've been capturing all night, literally , from the deck, but am unable to Edit To Tape/output. I need to black and code a tape and output with picture starting at hour 1. I do not seem to be getting picture or reference to the deck.
Picture shows up on my monitor when playing straight from the timeline when viewing via the Blackmagic card.
When I park on the timeline and push the record button on the deck and view via the deck, I have picture on my broadcast monitor.
The picture is jumping every few seconds, hence my thinking that I am not getting reference.
On the front of the deck the SDI light and Analog video are lit up. They are not flashing.
When I tried black and coding the tape timecode laid to the tape but no black.
When I try Edit To Tape nothing is going to the tape.
From the Blackmagic Card to the deck the connections are the following:
    (14) Genlock is going into the top Ref. Video In -- The 75 termination switch is on.
Analog Composite Video Out is going to line B on my Sony monitor and provides the picture from the deck.
    (16) Deck Control to Remote IN/OUT.
    (13) SDI out to SDI IN on deck (top port)
    (15) SDI in to SDI out on deck (top port)
If you need any other information please let me know. I am posting in several places in an effort to get an answer fast, because what would life be without deadlines? LOL!
    As always, thanks in advanced!

  • UVW-1800 analog component video output low into Decklink Extreme

I have come to realize that my UVW-1800 is feeding into my Decklink Extreme card at 75% of the level it should (based on NTSC bars). I can raise the input level of the Decklink. But I wonder if the ultimate problem is increased noise using this fix. I am about to test the composite output level. I do not have a regular WFM moni so I can't see the level until after I get it in.
    Thanks, Chris.

    Chris-
You might also look on eBay for a TBC remote. Even using the scopes in the Final Cut capture window will be OK. Analog video is subject to huge variations in levels and chroma. Getting them close to proper at the machine will give you a much more pleasing result than adjusting them after the fact in the digital domain.
The usual order of adjustment for analog machines is to first set the black level, then the white. If you adjust the white much it will affect the blacks, so go back and reset those. Which will affect the whites. so go back to THOSE. Usually about 3 tweaks on each will get both to the proper levels. Then set the chroma amount, and hue (if you are using the composite signal).
Finally on the %75 percent issue. It turns out that in analog video if you add the R,G,and B signals you only get 75%. So if you have full field bars that may be correct. You need SMPTE bars, which have a 100% white box at the bottom of the frame, to correctly set your video level.

  • Export to Tape Grayed Out, 4.2.1, DeckLink Extreme Card

I have tried everything I can think of and read all of the related posts and I am unable to get video output when I play back the video in Premier CS4 4.2.1
with a DeckLink Extreme Card on Win XP SP2.
The deck I need to output to is a Panasonic D5 deck with SDI inputs and w/no deck control.  For reasons related to forensics, I need to be able record the video at 10-bit uncompressed to preserve forensic details for future reference.  Tape is much cheaper and more reliable in this case than any electronic means.  A typical recording is usually 100 to 400 GB in size.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Jonathan

It may not be any good using the trial version as mpeg 4 or mpeg-2/HDV codec may not be included. (although I thought they were ?)
Regarding Encore CS5.1 which is included with CS5.5.2 , it will give you a choice of any number of codecs, but, you can choose the data speed, in the case of Canon XH A1 @HDV 1440 x 1080i it will not be mpeg 4 as that is from  an amature AVCHD at say 15mbps, choose 25 mbps @ 1440 x 1080i anamorphic as that is the rate of the XH A1 or higher as that is a professional rate and quality is retained.
Note : If you trial Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 11 )@ $119 AUD or less, (check for upogrades) it will have all the codecs including mpeg-2/HDV and will run on a 2GB min Duo-Core processor in 32 bit, it will run faster with a CUDA Video card (it is extremely fast with HDV, mpeg-4, H.264mov etc) . I used it occasionally as it has a very good video stabilizer at no extra cost ; CS5.5.2 needs a 64 bit computer. and you will need to buy Adobe After Effects for it's decent Stabilizer (The Warp stabilizer is now apparently included in CS6)  @ about $1550 or ProDAD Mercalli V2 Pro as a plug-in for Premiere Pro @ about $250 from Germany or ProDAD 's East Coast of USA Centre. There is no need to convert the codecs in either product for ease of editing on either timeline. You do not need to buy the Production Suite to run Premiere Pro CS5.5.2 .
I find the interface of CS5.5.2 is better and wonderfull to use, but, you will need to adapt to their Adobe's Minimum System Requirements re; Computer, and I use an CUDA approved Nividia Quadro FX 3800 which is a distinct advantage.I have been with Adobe for over 7 years since the beginning with mpeg-2/HDV and PP 1.5.1 which is still very good but, cannot handle AVCHD or H.264mov 1920 x 1080p
Good luck (CS5.5.2 is Adobe's best video editing product in 7 years)..Looks like CS6 is on the way ?

  • Decklink Extreme v. Kona card

    Hi all,
I'm working on a pmac G5 7,3 Mac osx 10.4.2 and running FCP 5. I edit for a motion graphics company and we do mostly SD. We worked in HDV once, but I'm sure it will come up again.
We have been using the Decklink Extreme video card, is there any reason to switch to Kona?
Has anyone tried both and can make a comparisson? Thanks in advance.
    Jenna

no reason at all unless you cannot do the job you need to do with your Decklink
there are some great cards out there from both Blackmagic and AJA, but you have no reason to upgrade or switch if what you've got already does the job

Has anyone got STP to play happily with the Decklink Extreme card.

    Many thanks

Inconsistent play back via card or internal speakers or total loss of sound!
You think you have set all the right settings, sound plays back fine through card, then you may click in the finder, or elsewhere and sound gone! It seems as if the decklink is fighting for the sound and overrides the compuer sound prefs, same thing happens with video, turn your back and FCP has lost output to the pal monitor have to keep toggling it back! Not sure if Decklink card and Apple computer are totally happy together. Anybody get them to play sweetly?

  • Which is better Kona 3 or Decklink Extreme?

Currently we are using a Canopus ADVC-700 for analogue

We want to get a editing card that will give us

  • 5.1 audio suggestions for FCS2 with a Decklink Extreme and Mac Pro?

I'm using a Mac Pro with Final Cut Studio, and I'm wondering if I can get 5.1 sound out of the decklink card. When I use a Firewire interface (M-audio firewire 410) to output audio, it is out of sync with the video coming out of the decklink card. So I guess the alternative is to find out how to get AES/EBU to output the 12 channels it says it can do in HD. I can't afford an HDCAM deck with 12 outputs, so how would any of you suggest I go about doing something like this? I really just want to get 5.1 going and in sync for the Final Cut Studio 2 release.
Thanks so much for any help!
    Bob Stovall

    Hi Bob,
I'm using a Mac Pro with Final Cut Studio, and I'm
wondering if I can get 5.1 sound out of the decklink
card. When I use a Firewire interface (M-audio
firewire 410) to output audio, it is out of sync with
the video coming out of the decklink card.
See my response to your other post on this. Note that M-Audio is not famous for excellence with Core Audio drivers.
    So I
guess the alternative is to find out how to get
AES/EBU to output the 12 channels it says it can do
in HD. I can't afford an HDCAM deck with 12 outputs,
so how would any of you suggest I go about doing
    something like this?
The Decklink AES/EBU hardware output will only source 2 channels of audio. If you have the 410, just use that with your audio software and set up the offset as I previously described. Plug its analog outs into your surround controller. It's very straight forward and you shouldn't have too much trouble.
If you tell us what audio software you're intending to use to produce your soundtrack, we could probably be more helpful.

  • Premiere cs4 works NOT with BMD DECKLINK EXTREME card

    hello,
in opposite to the information at
    http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/pdfs/prempro_cs4_formatguide.pdf
no decklink or SDI presets appear while opening a new project.
Since I work with SDI (DIGITAL BETACAM) I can not use PrCS4.
    Is there any trick there?
    regards
    vonthile

I know that the last Blackmagic update was a month before CS4 came out and only then did really get it working correctly with CS3.
Also keep in mind that that RED support has been on that list since October but was only released a month ago.
Maybe someone else can answer this better but with CS3 I didn't get the presets from Blackmagic until I installed the update from them, which still hasn't happened.
It's my understanding that Adobe didn't release an SDK until the 4.0.1 update. Meaning it'll be a few months for everyone to catch up.

Is there a site that gives update information about what is going on, or when we will have a solution?

Things never work that fast in the release world. I think we just learned of this problem less than a month ago - I'd bet we get something in the coming quarter... But I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks for your quick reply, Rob.
Under that same suspicion, I had also checked BlackMagic's website and discovered that it is, in fact, supported by Core Audio, as you can see here on the right:
    http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/hd/workflow/
Further, the card works perfectly when running Soundtrack Pro, which is why I'm curious what is happening within Logic that creates this problem..
