ADVC110 &cable box& capturing television using iMac/Leopard using iMovie

I bought the ADVC110 really only to have the television signal come right into a program (eitheriMovie or Final Cut)NOT to capture from VCR. I hooked up the ADVC w/ the cable box and manage to see the TV in the screen,, but I can't hear the audio while the TV is in Play mode,,and also don't get any sound after a Record session. Can anyone tell me what settings for ex. in iMovie that I should change or tick off,, or what exactly the setup would be for the red and white audio cords and where I should plug them? OR should I just give up and buy and EyeTV?

Doesn't the ADVC110 device have ports to plug in the red/white RCA cables?
You may need to select the audio coming from the ADVC110 device in System Preferences Sound pane Input tab. You won't be able to hear it unless you have a program to play-through the sound. For testing, you can use a simple program like LineIn

If you are setting up to use Wi Fi connect the Ethernet cable to the cable box then to the router.
Some companies like Comcast have online manuals available online for instructions. Check your cable company's web site. The manuals should be available in PDF format.

  • Kenex xd. Can i use it with a cable box

can i use the kenex xd with a cable box

Does your cable box output TV ready HDMI? If not, the answer is no because the Kanex XD converts HDMI signaling to mini-DisplayPort signaling only.
If your cable box has TV ready HDMI output, is it either 2560x1440 or 1280x720 resolution? Those are the two resolutions that the 27" iMac's display can accommodate in Target Display Mode.
Otherwise, you will need to get an EyeTV from El Gato to use with your cable box and the new iMac.

  • XBR55X850B remote won't work with Xfinity cable box.

The channels are listed in the cable guide tab (pictures of the listing too), but when I select the channel nothing happens.  Tried the IR blaster cable, still the same.  Xfinity cable box model # XG1-A.  Please help.

Does your cable box work when using the remote that came with the cable box? If it does not you have a problem with the box. If it does you might need to reposition the IR blaster making sure it is slightly infront of the box or run the setup on the TV again where you put in your zip code and the cable company you use.

To get TV on your iMac off the cable box you would need to use an external TV tuner device such as the company ElGato is highly regarded for.  I have used one of their EyeTV products for many years with my iMac to watch television shows from my Comcasst cable TV box.  You can look at the models here:

  • I'd like to connect my new iMac (2013) to my cable box to watch tv in my kitchen how do I do it?

I am interested in using the iMac we keep in the kitchen as a tv. Can I connect it to my cable box and use it that way? The iMac is new. I purchased it about 6 months ago. It's the smaller of the two sizes.

Not really. The only way is to have a system to Stream the TV images to the computer. To do what you want, Cable box to computer, you would have to use the computer as just a screen (TV) and although there is a way to use the iMac as a screen for another computer, Target Screen Mode, that won't work for connecting a cable box to it.

  • Imac 27 with cable box

i whant to now what can use to conect my cable box to my imac..
i have contact apple and there not able to help me...
please can some one help me?

I have no idea what you want exactly and I'm not that familiar with their product line. I would recommend you either contact Elgato directly or you can look for a dealer in your area. You can find a dealer locator on Elgato's website. Be descriptive about what you would like, for example is HDTV important, do you want DVR capablities etc...

  • Connecting U-verse digital cable box to new iMac

I was wondering if there was a simple solution to hooking up my digital cable box from U-verse to my new iMac so I could watch TV on it when it is not being used as a computer. Note that I do not care about recording TV onto my hard drive etc., just want the output of the cable box to show up on the iMac screen so I can get rid of the TV in the office? I see the Elgato EyeTV but that seems like overkill, is there a cable plus software solution I can get?

There used to be a lot of posts looking for remote codes that worked for the s-10 remote. The new s-20 is supposed to be more friendly to sound systems. You might call in & ask for one.

  • Is there a cable that can be used to connect a vhs player to an iMac?

    Greeting all,
I am trying to find out if there is a cable that can be used to connect a vhs player to an iMac? I have some old tapes that I would like to transfer and convert to dvd.
    Thanks

If you have access to a digital video camera that has pass thru capability you can use it in lieu of the ADVC110.  Plug the VCR into the camera and the camera into the Mac and import into iMovie.

  • Must I disconnect my cable box to use AppleTV?

I have just purchased an Apple TV. My television has an HDMI port that is currently used to connect my Moxi Box. May I use a duplex connector or must I dissconnect the Moxi Box?

If your TV only has a single HDMI port then yes, you must unplug the cable box if you want to use the Apple TV. You may want to consider purchasing an HDMI switch. Such a device has multiple HDMI inputs and one output that connects to your TV and you can switch bewteen your cable box and the Apple TV. Of course you could also consider purchasing a new TV with more than one HDMI input.
    Common sense applies here.

How do I use my MacBook Pro to watch exactly what my digital cable box would send to my TV?

You could use Elgato Systems' EyeTV product to view external video sources on your MBP.
There is additional cost involved, but it would achive what you want. You can buy the Hybrid product, and connect your external DVD player via Composite (red, white and yellow connectors) to your MBP via the EyeTV.

I have an older flat panel HDTV with only 1 HDMI connection which is being used through my cable box for TV reception.  I also use a Bose 3.2.1. GS Series II home theatre system.  It has no HDMI inputs. Can I use an Apple TV with my present system?  I'd prefer not hearing, "buy a new flat panel."

Have you tried adjusting the "Audio Out" and the "Dolby Digital" settings in settings > audio and video? It may be worth trying several combinations of these settings, although typically it is the "Dolby Digital" setting that causes most problems for users.

A few months ago, I purchased a new iMac. I recently created a movie using iMovie. Then I found out that iDVD is not included. So I have the problem that I want to burn a movie that I can play on my DVD player and watch on a television. I rang Applecare and was told that I need a program called BURN.
Is this correct? I can export the movie from iMovie in a m4v format, but I think I need to convert this to iso format before I can burn the disc.
I know there are programs like TOAST that will do this, but it is expensive.
I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Burn will not do what you want, and there is no real substutute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that came with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.
