Advice about buying a Macbbok Pro

I need to buy a laptop which is going to be used on a film set for playback of sound. Therefore it has to be reliable, powerful and fast. It has to be a laptop due to the fact that it needs to be mobile otherwise I would consider a Desktop. Therefore I am thinking a Macbook Pro with 4 gig of RAM and the 2.6 gHz processor upgrade. I have a couple of questions before I purchase it though. Firstly I have until early October to get it and am wondering if apple are planning to launch any new systems or introduce any new features/upgrades that would warrant me holding off for a while? Secondly I would rather go for the 300 gig HDD as it's larger, however I notice this runs at 4200 RPM as opposed to the 200 gig which runs at 7200 RPM. Do you think this would make much difference to the performance as I really want it to run as fast as possible, meaning that I would sacrifice the extra capacity for even a minor increase in HDD performance or write speeds. And generally can you give me any other useful advice that could help me to make the right purchase of this machine. As far as I can see, this is definately the most powerful laptop available.
Looking forward to any replies
Many thanks
L.Dudley

Hi L.Dudley;
We here have absolutely no idea what Apple is going to do. So we are not able to help you speculate about anything new.
If you can hold off until October then do so. That will give you the best chance of getting the latest and greatest.
As far as the rest of your questions go you would have to tell use more details on the software and hardware you plan to use for playing this sound back. Without know that it would be all guess work.

  • Advice about buying a new hard drive

I have a TOSHIBA Satellite L25-S1216. I have not been able to boot into Windows XP for 3 years using the factory Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD and the Fully Recover procedure on the back of the DVD packae. I have been using Linux for the past 3 years. Ubuntu SMART test disk utility tells me I have 20 bad hard drive sectors. I have concluded I should buy a new hard drive, since mine has 20 bad sectors. My current hard drive is ATA-6, so I know I need a PATA compatible hard drive. I'd like to increase to maybe 60 GB from the current 40 GB. I'd also like to go with a solid state drive, but there don't appear to be many PATA compatible solid state drives.
And I don't want to get too complicated or expensive; I want to stay with my current Windows XP. Not sure if a SATA PATA interface adapter would work to allow me to use a SATA solid state hard drive or not. I know (from reading knowledge base posts) there is also the potential problem of the older BIOSs not recognizing the newer Advanced Drive Format drives.
QUESTION: Does anybody have any advice about buying a hard drive that would work for me? How can I be reasonably sure a hard drive I buy is compatible with my computer?
    Thank you,
    Bob

    Go to Solution.

either get a pata drive (you can get larger than the stock 40gb) or use your $ towards a more current new/used laptop.  pata ssd would be a waste and I doubt adapter would work.  also, ms is dropping support for xp so it would be a good time to upgrade to something with a more current os as well.

2.4ghz is plenty of processing, if it means you'll save money over the 2.7ghz. I'd have suggested 2.7 if you also do heavy video editing/rendering using FCP, etc... but the spec you have is plenty

  • Need expert advice on buying new macbook pro 15 inch

Hi I Am a digital textile designer and  planning to buy my first retina macbook pro. I need expert advice, which model should i buy 15 inch base model or with dedicated graphics card. i will use macbook for digital designing on Adobe photoshop and multi tasking. so now really confused is intel iris pro graphics will handle heavy files on photoshop or Nvidia GT750 m will good for heavy work. I am working on very large resolution file like 10 to 15k in resolution approx 1 GB in file size with lot of filters is being use while designing. Which model will handle above task well and last longer.

    Look at the specifications here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro
You may be confusing the quad core CPU with the Graphics processor.
It should have no difficulty in running Adobe Photoshop.

  • Advice about buying new Macbook

    Hi all,
I'm trying to decide between the Macbook Air and the Macbook Pro with Retina display, and I'd like to see if people have advice about which one would better serve my needs.
This is my only computer, and while it needs to be portable, it doesn't need to necessarily be the lightest possible (Macbook Air).
What I do want is at least 256GB of storage. Right now I have 156GB, and I'm almost maxing it out. I've had to take things off my hard drive to make more room. I have a large iTunes library and a large iPhoto library, and I want all those things on my hard drive.
I also want good performance because that's where my 2008 Macbook is not doing so well - gets very slow, esp when iPhoto and similar apps are open.
I need to be able to work with several apps open - Word, Excel, Adobe Reader, Chrome, etc. I don't need to do a lot of gaming or sophisticated video editing or anything like that - I work mostly with MS Office programs.
So is the Macbook Air good enough or should I get the Macbook Pro?
    Thanks!

The Air should be ample for your described needs.  If weight is not a consideration, the Air has by far the best battery run time, so if a lot of work is done without an AC outlet available, that is some thing to take into account.
The Pro has a superior display and is a more powerful machine, but the extra power is not needed for what you have described.
Personally I would urge you to consider installing as much storage as you can afford.  Using external HDDs in the field gets very old quickly.  Over time data has a habit of increasing.
One important point to keep in mind, with both the Air and the Pro, no future upgrades are available at this time so configure the unit accordingly.  I would spend my money for upgrades in this order, storage, RAM, CPU.
    Ciao.

  • Need advice about buying iMac

    Hello,
I am buying a used iMac G5 from private party.
Do not have much money. Going to look at it. He does not
have restoration discs, but is including Leopard
disc. Seems like a good computer for 400.00
just wondering if I need restoration discs...what to look for.
Am a college student and need one for school.
Any help would be great. I am familiar with
    Apple.  Thank you

I wouldn't put your money into a PowerPC at this point.  You can buy a refurbished Intel-based iMac, with standard 1 year Apple warranty, for $929 in the Apple store:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC508LL/A or if you want a lower priced mac, a mac mini starts at $579 with the education discount.  If you're limit is $400, at least buy an Intel-based mac, as that will serve you better for the next few years.
Unfortunately, PowerPC's have been left behind. Some programs like Flash no longer support PowerPCs, and some web sites require a current level of Flash to work (some ESPN programming comes to mind).  I've also found that some online content requires Intel processors.
If you decide to buy the iMac G5 without the original distribution disks, you may want to call Apple to see if you can buy a set (they were about $60, however, Apple may no longer have them in stock) or plan to, at some point, buy TechTool Pro, which can do similar hardware testing as the Apple Hardware Test which is on the original distribution disks.  You might be able to find a set on ebay, but make sure they are the gray-faced OS X disks for your model iMac G5. Those disks only work on the systems they are delivered with.
Personally, I wouldn't buy a used mac unless it came with a clean hardware report via the Apple Hardware extended test or via one of the TechTool products (Deluxe or Pro).

  • Advice on buying new Mac Pro

How big of a difference is there between the 8-core 2.8 and the 3.0. Is it really worth the extra buck. Also, does anyone see any sign of blueray players coming standard in the mac pro? I know that cheap sony laptops are comming standard with BD players.

You can see the differences here...

No word on the BlueRay yet. I have seen and read about people using them on MacPros though.

  • Advice about my "damaged" Macbook Pro 250 gb (2009) HD?

    Hello,
I am new to the forum, so if I am not posting in the right place, please let me know. Anyhow, I got a new Macbook Pro in July 2009, and last week the hard drive stopped working correctly. The problem is the system would not boot up (showing the gray apple logo with the spinning wheel constantly). I ran the disc utility to repair any damages, and the Hard Drive was able to mount correctly, showing all my files. Unfortunately, it still could not boot up. The Apple Store replaced it with a new hard drive, and I kept my old hard drive.
My question is: *Can I use an External Enclosure to turn my Old Hard Drive into an External Hard Drive to transfer files?* I wanted to know if this was still possible, since it would not boot up in my computer. I wanted to use Target Disc Mode, but I don't have any other Firewire enabled Macbooks in my area.
Any knowledge/advice would be great. Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Can I use an External Enclosure to turn my Old Hard Drive into an External Hard Drive to transfer files?
Yes, if there is any usable data left. The important thing in data recovery is not to access the data from anything but a program that is specially designed for data recovery*:

  • Need advice on buying older mac pro

    Hello fellow mac pro experts.
I am in the market for a used mac pro, and would like to know which one you would recommend and with how much RAM for the following main tasks:
    1) The usual email / internet stuff
    2) DVD rendering
    3) Logic Pro
    4) Will have to be able to run Windows 7 Ultimate using bootcamp.
I will use two 30" monitors, from HP model LP3065 (2560 resolution)
I would rather use Snow Leopard (10.6.8) if possible. I don't like Lion or Mountain Lion.
So, what is the configuration you would recommend, considering most small tasks (email, internet, office, etc) use just 1 core most of the times?
    Thanks in advance!!

  • A ? about buying a macbook pro in italy

I am an American currently living in italy. I want to order a macbook pro from the italin apple site. if i purchase a macbook with the US/english keyboard will all the OS software be in english? this is important cause i dont speak or read italian.

Apple software comes in 18 languages. Normally you choose the one you want when you first start up a new machine. If it turns out wrong, then changing it to english just takes a minute -- you change a preference setting and logout/login.

  • Is it better to buy the cheapest Pro model and customize it?

I'm thinking about buying a MacBook Pro, although I will be waiting for the upgrade everyone has been talking about. Right now, it looks as if it's cheaper to customize the $1199 model to have the same specs as the $1499 model. Upgrading the $1199 model to 4GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive brings the total to $1349. Is the processor speed between these two models that big of a difference (2.26 vs. 2.53)? Basically I'm asking if it's better to upgrade the base model or just buy the more expensive model with the same specs. It certainly seems cheaper.

Depends on what you use your computer for, tensocfan.
If you use your Mac for CPU intensive stuff then the extra 10% in CPU speed may be useful and you can't upgrade it later. If not then go with the hip pocket nerve.
    Cheers

While it is against the TOU of these boards to speculate on future products/updates what Thomas said is right: FCPX is quite a new product and it doesn't make any sense to drop it now.
The only thing that MIGHT get dropped at a certain point is support for older hardware/OS as FCP X progresses.

  • About to buy a Mac Pro, have quick question please.

    Hi all,
I am going to more than likely buy a Mac Pro 2.66 tonight or tomorrow, but I was wondering something in regards to graphics cars if any one could assist me.
I am planning to go with the ATI card and 2gigs of ram since I do some gaming on the side and plan to use bootcamp for that.
My question is that if I buy the machine in retail store, they do not credit the stock GeForce card and just add the ATI card in, so if I go that rout can both the ATI and Nvidia card both reside in the machine at the same time and be used in SLI mode?
EG: can I get the power of both cards or will I only be able to use the processing power of one card? If only one card then would I be better off configuring the machine online since they credit you the difference of the Nvidia card which saves roughly $150.00 off the order from doing it in a retail store?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not worried about the $150.00, it would almost be worth it to spend the extra since the shipping time on the online configuration may end up costing almost the same unless I want to wait a few weeks for the machine.
Whats your thoughts on this? Is it worth it to buy in the store and use both cards or just buy online from apple and get the credit for the Nvidia card?
    Thanks in advance!

can both the ATI and Nvidia card both reside in the machine at the same time and be used in SLI mode
No… SLI requires two Nvidia SLI capable cards. In addition, SLI is not supported under Mac OS X although does work, apparently, under Windows and Boot Camp. ATi's comparable technology is CrossFire.
would I be better off configuring the machine online since they credit you the difference of the Nvidia card which saves roughly $150.00 off the order from doing it in a retail store?
Financially yes as the Nvidia card is ultimately useless to you. One consideration though is the CTO conditions of return, or lack there of, in case you receive a DOA. In the US, amongst other countries, CTo unit are not returnable even if they are DOA so you should check the terms of sale in the country store you would buy from.
    Whats your thoughts on this?
I, like many others, bought CTOs from the Apple Store so I don't think it's such a bad way to go. It also means you won't have any pressing need to open your new Mac Pro right away.
One thing you might want to consider though is to downgrade the standard 250GB hard drive to a 160GB drive and use the saving on a drive of your choosing. Apple tends to use OEM desktop drives that have unimpressive performance. The 160GB drive in my Mac Pro didn't even get turned on. It was a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 if you're interested.

You'll probably have to install it yourself as nobody knows when t his month ML will be released.

Not only would it be safe but less expensive as well.  The tray loaders are deemed to be the most reliable.  Apple does not support Blueray so avoid that.
