Advice about my mini's 24" display

I have a Mac mini Core i7 2.6 (Late 2012), which I love. But my 24" HP ZR2440w monitor has started flickering -- occasional blinking rectangles on different parts of the screen that seem to correspond to disk activity.
I've never had monitor trouble before -- does this suggest I need a new monitor? A new cable? (I use DVI, with the HDMI adapter)
If new monitor, can anyone recommend a 24" model that works well with the mini right out of the box? Something that displays sharp text?
Thanks!
-Ted

Why are you using a HDMI to DVI connection when your monitor has a DisplayPort input capability?
You should be using a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable like this: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Mini-DisplayPort-Adapter-Cable/dp/B002XVYZ82
Your 2nd best option would be Mini DisplayPort to DVI. http://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=5998&catargetid=320013720000066114&cadevic e=c&kpid=105998&gclid=CIe-5PCe_8QCFUwA7AodQE0A9Q
The best use of the HDMI output would be for use with TVs, not computer monitors.

  • Advice about Mac Mini home set up

I'd really appreicate a bit of advice with regard to a good home set up...
I have been using an iMac fomr 2007 for the last few years, primarily for photo editing on Aperture and Photoshop, as well as hosting a pretty big itunes library. The computer is now crushingly slow - I put this down to a combination of age (although 6 years isn't too bad!) and the amount of data being stored on the computer. I have 10,000+ photos and an itunes library of 200GB+. I am now thinking about the best way to go with regard to replacing the machine.
One option I have looked at would be to purchase a Mac Mini with a server OS. I would then use this to host all of the files - itunes library, photo library, etc. I would then buy a laptop (not sure which one!) to do any importing of photos, editing etc. My understanding is that it would then be pretty straightforward to merge the library with the main library hosted on the Mac Mini.
I am struggling to see if this is the best way to do things, to be honest. I have fairly limited knowledge of home set ups, but I am OK to learn as I go. The issues for me with buying another iMac are: in my house there is limited space to physically put the computer (2 children and a small house!) and I am worried that, even thought the iMac will be powerful enough to meet my storage needs now, it won't be so good in a few years time. I know an obvious solution it to buy exterbal hardrives, but I have fund these to be pretty unreliable, especially when they host photo libraries.
Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Thanks

The only external hard drives I have had any reliability
issues with are Western Digital external drives.  To often
they have caused all manor of issues over the years and
I now avoid them like the plague.
Personally, I have a few Iomega portables for clone backups.
For my media server, I have a pair or 500gig Gdrive portables
for iTunes (one main, one as backup) and a pair of 3 Terabyte
Seagate GoFlex drives (one main, one backup) to serve up
all my video content connected to my Airport Extreme Base
Station.  This setup is active 24/7 and has been flawless
serving up their media content to my workstation Mini, my
Macbook Pro, and my HTPC Mini for almost two years now.
For file sharing that you desire to do, there is absolutely no need
for the Server app.  Simply enabling file sharing and selecting
folders to be shared is all you need to do.  And for iTunes, you
will simply need to enable the Home Sharing feature in it.
As far as a Mini, unless you want to do your Aperture and Photoshop
on it, you can get away with the base model.  If you also intend to
use it as a photo workstation, then I would suggest the next model
up the food chain, with the optional 2.6 GHz, quad core i7. Also, if
this is a scenario, max out the RAM to 16 gig, but get it from OWC,
    Newegg, etc.

  • Advice about using the laptop with closed lid while connected to external display

    Hello all HP forum members!
I have an ENVY 17 with Win8.1 64bit, a great laptop, but I need an advice about using it while connected via HDMI cable to an external display (TV).
When I play heavy 3D games, the computer produces more heat than usual (of course this is normal), but doing so with closed lid, could this harm the  display in some way, as a result of the heat?
    Thanks!

    Hi @VVel ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. It is a great site for information and questions. I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY 17 Notebook and issue with keeping the Notebook on while closing the lid. Here is a document on changing the Power option.
Control Panel - Power Options - upper left - Choose what closing the lid does.
Change Plan Settings and also check Advanced Settings. Make sure you do this for both battery and power.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Whenever I try to use my macbook, it will work for about 10 min. then the screen will go black, the computer will not respond to my commands, and I have to restart it. Can anyone tell me what's going on, and how to fix it? Thank you!!!

Hello everyone, like most people on this site, I am having difficulties understanding and fixing my Macbook Pro. About a month ago my computer screen went black, the computer was unresponsive, and it started making a beeping noise. I restarted the computer, and it seemed to have fixed itself. 6 days ago, I put my laptop into it's case with some papers, went home (about 30 min. after putting laptop into case), and opened my bag. My computer's fans were on, the computer was really hot, and when I opened the computer, the screen was black and unresponsive. I turned it off, let it cool down, turned it back on, started to stream a video on Hulu, and about ten minutes after, the screen went black again and the computer was unresponsive. Now everytime I turn it on after about ten to fifteen minutes the screen will go black, the computer will become unresponsive, and I have to shut it off. The weird thing though is that everytime I restart my computer, when I reopen my account, my computer acts as if nothing has happened, and everything I had opened or unsaved is still there without autosave saving the documents. The screen also goes black and the computer becomes unresposive when I move the computer around. I get a lot of pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet. I don't know if one of those pop-up websites might have given me a virus or may be the cause of this problem. I don't now what is wrong with my computer or how to fix it, but if anyone has any advice, I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!!!!!! Thank you very much!!!
-- Sincerely, A very confused, scared, and hopless Macbok Owner

To get rid of "pop-up ads and other crap on my computer when I am on the internet", click on Safari in the Menu bar, and select Preferences. Next select Extensions. Delete all of them. Restart Safari.
The first step in addressing the black screen is an SMC reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

My iPad Mini with retina display suddenly will not connect to the Internet. It shows full wifi bars, yet no web pages will load. My Internet is working with all other apple devices in my house. The iPad also no longer works with celluar data. I'm not sure what has happened. It was working fine a few hours ago. I have tried resetting it, ive restarted my browser etc. I tried to erase all data from my Ipad but I can't do that because it needs to sign into my Apple ID and use the Internet!

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

If bought directly from an Apple Retail store or Apple Online store, and is still within the 14 day return period Apple Offers you can take it back and get a full refund which you can then use towards buying the other version.
If its already past the 14 day period then you won't be able to return it for a refund no.
If you did not buy it from an Apple Retail store or Apple Online Store you will have to consult with the store you bought it from about their return policies.

  • In Car iPod Classic 160 cutting out after about 2 mins

I have a Kenwood KDC6537u car headunit with the KCA iP200 cable and an iPod classic 160gb. Everything seems fine and runs well for about 2 mins when I get a 'iPod Err' display. The display on the iPod goes back from the 'Kenwood' screen to the normal iPod screen. Switching the unit off and on restarts the iPod only to stop again after another two minutes or so. Is there something that I need to reset on the iPod to stop this. I've upgraded the headunit to the latest available from kenwood so I'm now stuck.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Further to the description I have done two journeys where this didn't happen and all was well. This makes for even more frustration. Kenwood can't offer anything other than to reset the iPod which didn't work. They also suggest there may be a fault in part of the 'chain' of bits but I don't have the capability to check - I only have one of each bit so can't compare.
    Anyone have any suggestions? Please?

  • What is better for college? An iPad air or an iPad mini with retina display?

I'm currently a junior in high school and I'll be graduating in the summer of 2015. My parents, well mostly dad, are planning on buying me the iPad air with 128 GB of memory. I got curious and went to look at the price and compare models and I saw that the iPad mini with retina display was the same as the iPad air, the only difference is the size. Since I saw that it was cheaper I was thinking on telling my parents to buy me that instead of the iPad air because it is more costy and my family isn't really the rich kind of people. I will be only using the iPad for school and nothing else since I have my iPod to play games on and stuff so it will only be used for purely educational purposes. Plus I've been hearing around that the iPad air is not that great and stuff because it has a bigger screen and such. Personally for me, I do not care about the screen size I just care about the price for my parents' sake because I don't like it when they have to spend a lot of money. So can you please help me decide on which to get and why it would be better than the other? Please and thank you.

  • Advice about buying new Macbook

    Hi all,
I'm trying to decide between the Macbook Air and the Macbook Pro with Retina display, and I'd like to see if people have advice about which one would better serve my needs.
This is my only computer, and while it needs to be portable, it doesn't need to necessarily be the lightest possible (Macbook Air).
What I do want is at least 256GB of storage. Right now I have 156GB, and I'm almost maxing it out. I've had to take things off my hard drive to make more room. I have a large iTunes library and a large iPhoto library, and I want all those things on my hard drive.
I also want good performance because that's where my 2008 Macbook is not doing so well - gets very slow, esp when iPhoto and similar apps are open.
I need to be able to work with several apps open - Word, Excel, Adobe Reader, Chrome, etc. I don't need to do a lot of gaming or sophisticated video editing or anything like that - I work mostly with MS Office programs.
So is the Macbook Air good enough or should I get the Macbook Pro?
    Thanks!

The Air should be ample for your described needs.  If weight is not a consideration, the Air has by far the best battery run time, so if a lot of work is done without an AC outlet available, that is some thing to take into account.
The Pro has a superior display and is a more powerful machine, but the extra power is not needed for what you have described.
Personally I would urge you to consider installing as much storage as you can afford.  Using external HDDs in the field gets very old quickly.  Over time data has a habit of increasing.
One important point to keep in mind, with both the Air and the Pro, no future upgrades are available at this time so configure the unit accordingly.  I would spend my money for upgrades in this order, storage, RAM, CPU.
    Ciao.

  • My iPad mini with retina display has blue edges?!

Similar to what I heard about the new Kindle HDX 7 to my dismay, my iPad mini with retina display that I drove an hour to pickup at the closest Apple store  has an extremely noticeable blue tint on the top of the screen. Also ever so slightly on the right hand side. Anyone else have this? Am I being too picky? Will the apple store replace this? I paid Apple's premium price so I feel it should be perfect.

Yeah it's definitely not normal. I was thinking I'm not waiting 5 days for a replacement so I drove an hour back to the Apple store and got a replacement. The Apple employee was very helpful and could clearly see the blue hue. I ended up switching to a white model to change it up, and because they had zero 32gb black models. I love the white it makes it feel totally newer versus my old black non retina mini. So moral of the story, don't settle for blue backlight bleeding. This new one has NONE and I'm 100% satisfied!!

  • Advice about buying a new hard drive

I have a TOSHIBA Satellite L25-S1216. I have not been able to boot into Windows XP for 3 years using the factory Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD and the Fully Recover procedure on the back of the DVD packae. I have been using Linux for the past 3 years. Ubuntu SMART test disk utility tells me I have 20 bad hard drive sectors. I have concluded I should buy a new hard drive, since mine has 20 bad sectors. My current hard drive is ATA-6, so I know I need a PATA compatible hard drive. I'd like to increase to maybe 60 GB from the current 40 GB. I'd also like to go with a solid state drive, but there don't appear to be many PATA compatible solid state drives.
And I don't want to get too complicated or expensive; I want to stay with my current Windows XP. Not sure if a SATA PATA interface adapter would work to allow me to use a SATA solid state hard drive or not. I know (from reading knowledge base posts) there is also the potential problem of the older BIOSs not recognizing the newer Advanced Drive Format drives.
QUESTION: Does anybody have any advice about buying a hard drive that would work for me? How can I be reasonably sure a hard drive I buy is compatible with my computer?
    Thank you,
    Bob
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

either get a pata drive (you can get larger than the stock 40gb) or use your $ towards a more current new/used laptop.  pata ssd would be a waste and I doubt adapter would work.  also, ms is dropping support for xp so it would be a good time to upgrade to something with a more current os as well.

  • Advice about switching to the mba

Only recently moved from windows to a mac and I'm ready to go MBA already!
I need some advice about the new MBA though please... Usually I look for reviews, youtube vids etc but can't find anything about the new MBA.
I read stories about problems with the old MBA and wanted to hear from people that have the new version.
I'm particularly worried about the stories of overheating and non-stop fan noises, taking ages to reboot etc (have these been rectified with the new MBA?).
I currently have the 2ghz and it's pretty fast, love how quickly it switches on and off and I'd hate to loose that.
Also, the MBA would become my main laptop as I couldn't possibly afford to keep both! Obviously I realise the MBA is not as powerful as the MacBook or the Pro but I'm not a heavy user, only mail, internet, youtube, itunes, ical, Office for Mac, some basic photo editing and rarely some light video editing.
I would really appreciate any insight from current new MBA users, I know things are quite subjective (ie: I think my MacBook overheats very quickly but maybe to others this would be the norm) so I wouldn't bite your head off!
sorry if this is the wrong place to post this... I couldn't find a more relevant category.

I bought the 2nd generation MBA (released last November). I purposely held off on buying the first generation because of the complaints about the overheating etc. I follow a lot of Mac forums and can tell you that any problems you heard about have been resolved.
There are always a few people that have issues with their machine - not matter what generation it is - but I would recommend the new versions to anybody that wants one.
Fan noise is very subjective. I use my MBA a for Audio Recording and production - so my fan comes on pretty fast on mine - as the software I use maxes out the processor right from the start. And here is the best way I can sum it up:
If I take the MBA with fan on into a dead quiet room - yes - I can hear the fan - and to me it sounds like blowing air out of your mouth to cool down hot food....
If I take that MBA with the fan on into the kitchen where the fridge is running - I cannot hear the MBA anymore. Or if the dishwasher is on, or the clothes dryer etc.....
I can only hear it is a dead quiet recording room. Subjective as it may be - it's perfectly acceptable to me.
I have almost never had to restart my MBA - usually only when a software update requires it - I just sleep my machine. OSX is rock solid. my MBA takes 27 seconds to load - every time. If i do need to shut down - it takes like 2 or 3 seconds.
I paid top dollar for mine when it was released and even though I could get it for $1000 cheaper now - I don't regret the money I spent. The solid MBA build and solid OSX are worth a lot to me.
If there's any more questions just post them and I'd be happy to answer.

  • IPad Mini or iPad Mini with Retina Display?

Yea. I know the answer seems pretty obvious, "Dur, get an iPad Mini with Retina Display!". But I'm worried about the prices.
Do you guys think it's worth it to buy an iPad Mini with RD for $100 more? Or should I just buy a regular iPad Mini? Is there a big difference between the two? If so, what is the difference between them?

As already mentioned here the best way to make your decision is to look at both models. My sister is perfectly happy with her G1 mini, she has no experience with retinal models. My first iPad is the 3G iPad Retinal, my first look at the mini I could see the "screen door" effect of seeing the pixels. After using a retinal model for almost a year there was no way I could use the non-retinal mini for regular use. With that said if I compared my 1G iPod touch the mini has a very good display.
Bottom line is, look at the quality of the displays to see if the added cost of the retinal display is worth it for you. Personally after shopping around I would still go with the full size iPad Air with retinal display simply because I prefer the larger retinal display.
