Advice about switching to the mba

Only recently moved from windows to a mac and I'm ready to go MBA already!
I need some advice about the new MBA though please... Usually I look for reviews, youtube vids etc but can't find anything about the new MBA.
I read stories about problems with the old MBA and wanted to hear from people that have the new version.
I'm particularly worried about the stories of overheating and non-stop fan noises, taking ages to reboot etc (have these been rectified with the new MBA?).
I currently have the 2ghz and it's pretty fast, love how quickly it switches on and off and I'd hate to loose that.
Also, the MBA would become my main laptop as I couldn't possibly afford to keep both! Obviously I realise the MBA is not as powerful as the MacBook or the Pro but I'm not a heavy user, only mail, internet, youtube, itunes, ical, Office for Mac, some basic photo editing and rarely some light video editing.
I would really appreciate any insight from current new MBA users, I know things are quite subjective (ie: I think my MacBook overheats very quickly but maybe to others this would be the norm) so I wouldn't bite your head off!
sorry if this is the wrong place to post this... I couldn't find a more relevant category.

I bought the 2nd generation MBA (released last November). I purposely held off on buying the first generation because of the complaints about the overheating etc. I follow a lot of Mac forums and can tell you that any problems you heard about have been resolved.
There are always a few people that have issues with their machine - not matter what generation it is - but I would recommend the new versions to anybody that wants one.
Fan noise is very subjective. I use my MBA a for Audio Recording and production - so my fan comes on pretty fast on mine - as the software I use maxes out the processor right from the start. And here is the best way I can sum it up:
If I take the MBA with fan on into a dead quiet room - yes - I can hear the fan - and to me it sounds like blowing air out of your mouth to cool down hot food....
If I take that MBA with the fan on into the kitchen where the fridge is running - I cannot hear the MBA anymore. Or if the dishwasher is on, or the clothes dryer etc.....
I can only hear it is a dead quiet recording room. Subjective as it may be - it's perfectly acceptable to me.
I have almost never had to restart my MBA - usually only when a software update requires it - I just sleep my machine. OSX is rock solid. my MBA takes 27 seconds to load - every time. If i do need to shut down - it takes like 2 or 3 seconds.
I paid top dollar for mine when it was released and even though I could get it for $1000 cheaper now - I don't regret the money I spent. The solid MBA build and solid OSX are worth a lot to me.
If there's any more questions just post them and I'd be happy to answer.

  • Advice about hooking up a MBA to my emac and it's firewire external devices

    Hi
A friend has offered to pass on a MBA - the only prob is that i'm Emac and firewire based with my hard ware. I don't even use any wireless.
    My First questions are:
    1. Would it be possible to get the emac communicating with the MBA wirelessly in theory - and if so whats the easiest way ?
    2. If i can do the above - will the MBA be able to access my external firewire HHDs and external dvd drive via them being hooked up to my emac - Whats the deal with the MBA accessing these external firewire devices ? Is it as simple as them being mounted on my emac desktop?
    3. I'm on Tiger on my emac - will the Leopard on MBA be able to interact with this OS ?
    4. My Emac is a PPC computor - will it still be able to interact with the MBA ?
    Thanks for helping out ...

You certainly can use an AEBS if you want. It's more expensive but is very well-made, reliable, and you can be sure it's Apple compatible. Personally, I use an AEBS in my home network. However, I use a D-Link 524 for my Vancouver condo network because I rent the condo when I'm not there. My tenants usually have PCs, so the D-Link will be easier for them to work with and configure. It works perfectly well with my Macs, but configuration requires using a browser (the included software doesn't work on Macs) and D-Link doesn't provide much support for Mac users. If these are concerns for you, then by all means use the AEBS. You won't be disappointed.
The D-Link 524 only supports Ethernet 10/100BT speeds, but for you that's fine because your eMac's Ethernet port only supports Ethernet 10/100BT speeds, so you really can't take advantage of the higher speeds within your network. The D-Link does not support 802.11n which means you will be limited to 802.11b/g communication speed for your MBA. That would not be the case with the AEBS.
As for file sharing you can share files between computers without requiring the use of the Public folder. See the following:

  • I have an iPhone 4S I am thinking about switching to the galaxy s3 because of the humongous screen, apple need a bigger iPhone, should I switch to an s3 or wait to see what apple will bring us

Should I switch to a galaxy s3 because of the huge screen or should I wait for apple to bring a bigger iphone

The s3 is a great phone, yes the screen is huge, no more squinting to read anything and also feels good in the hand unlike the strange size of the iPhone 5. Nice thing about android in general is how customizable it is. If you don't like the keyboard use a different one, use widgets to get to data right from the home screen rather than opening the app, unlock your phone with a pass code, pattern or facial recognition, tons of other options.
Down side about it, like the iPhone it has a mechanical home button, which will wear out.

  • Advice About Switching To Motion

    Hi all,
Just wanted some advice, I'm coming from Adobe products like Premiere and After Effects and wanted to know if the Mac products were just as good and you can achieve everything you can in After Effects? If someone could let me know the best Mac packages to buy would be much appreciated...
    Cheers!

I can't speak about Premiere Pro 2.0, the last version I used was 1.0. Let it also be said that I learned on FCP, so naturally, I'm going to prefer that. Although, Premiere does has a very similar interface, at least when compared to other NLEs like Avid or Vegas.
I used Premiere 6.5 and Premiere Pro 1.0 on my personal PC before I switched over to Mac. 6.5 had numerous incompatbility problems with my hardware (liked to magically reboot my computer when playing back audio recorded at 32Khz). And it was a memory hog. Pro 1.0 was a pretty big upgrade, but still had stability and performance issues for me. On a comprable Mac, FCP was always more responsive and stable. Since I haven't used it in a while, I can't really compare the two feature-wise now.
As far as choosing a motion graphics package, it's going to depend entirely on your needs. Motion, After Effects, and Shake are three very different programs with different feature lists and workflow capabilities. If I had to personally choose, I would go with After Effects over Motion because of its 3d compositing and camera features. I feel like more can be done with AE. What I really like about Motion, though, is how fast things can be accomplished. It feels more like a sandbox, where animations and effects can be quickly drawn up and played back at full speed (with the right hardware). I think AE has tends to have a little more overhead (pre-comping and RAM rendering is a pain).
Shake is a wholly different beast than those other two. I really haven't had an opportunity to use it seriously, but Patrick would know more. From what I've seen it's really good at compositing elements together, creating mattes, doing motion tracking, keying, etc. It's more of a tool for live action footage and/or 3d footage. AE and Motion do a lot of that stuff, too, but also focus on 2d animation and motion graphics.
EDIT: Just wanted to mention that Shake has a steep learning curve. The interface is not the most user friendly.

  • Need advice about passwords and the cloud

I had/have Power Book, won a mini and wanted to share limited things between the two. Stopped by an apple store while on vacation and a nice helper at the apple store set up apple email for me on the mini...BUT I think I have 2 separate passwords now and I don't know how to get the 2 items to share info. I don't have apple mail on the laptop and thats fine I just wanted a NEW email on the mini that I could use to send photos but didn't want teh 10K of emails off my laptop to drop into my mini so I was fine with the new email BUT want my calendars to show up on each device and photos....

You can't have 2 different passwords for the same account, so it may well be that you now have 2 accounts, please confirm this at:

    Hi there,
I'm currently paying for Flash but it looks like I may have to use Photoshop and After Effects too, so I was thinking about switching to the full plan. However if I don't end up needing Photoshop or After Effects is it possible to downgrade my membership to single-app in the future?

  • Questions before I make the switch to a MBA

I've own'd a Macbook 2.4 Ghz with 2 gig memory now for about 8 months. I'm happy with the machine but always wanted the MBA for the portability. I travel everyday and would love a MBA but was not ready to jump in on the first rev.
I use my MB for webmail, photos, converting HD video and some light editing. My question is the new 1.8G/128SSB able to handle video processing as good or better than this Macbook? I would think the SSD would be better and the graphics chip is probably alot better then this x3100 model.
Looking for any advice you MBA owners have! Thanks.

I went from a 2.4/7200 MBP to this 1.86/SSD. I still have my Pro and I am in my 2 week "trial period" with the Air. The Air actually feels quite a bit faster than my Pro overall due to the SSD. I'm sure it's not as fast for encoding video, etc., but it is more than adequate for my needs.
This biggest difference I see is battery life and charging time. I definitely seem to get more life out of the Pro, and the recharge time is ridiculous at times (5-8hrs!!?). I'm hoping this clears up after some more calibration and cycling. I hear that the new Pros and Macbooks have the same issue though.
Overall, it's a beautiful machine that appeals to my minimalist nature. If the regular Macbooks had a screen this nice I might have gone that route because of the ability to upgrade, etc. I may actually still do that if this battery issue doesn't improve....

  • Advice about using the laptop with closed lid while connected to external display

    Hello all HP forum members!
I have an ENVY 17 with Win8.1 64bit, a great laptop, but I need an advice about using it while connected via HDMI cable to an external display (TV).
When I play heavy 3D games, the computer produces more heat than usual (of course this is normal), but doing so with closed lid, could this harm the  display in some way, as a result of the heat?
    Thanks!

    Hi @VVel ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. It is a great site for information and questions. I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY 17 Notebook and issue with keeping the Notebook on while closing the lid. Here is a document on changing the Power option.
Control Panel - Power Options - upper left - Choose what closing the lid does.
Change Plan Settings and also check Advanced Settings. Make sure you do this for both battery and power.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

I need some advice about the macbook pro and iPhone 5.
I took a video on my iPhone and tried to email it it said it was too big to send? So i downloaded it to my macbook pro and tried to mail it to no avail? The macbook tells me the server won't let it through other mail goes through any ideas how to resize it or what it might take to send it?

I agree with LowLister, the best option for you to share the video online is to upload it to your online storage account for example : Box, Dropbox, SkyDrive (All of them provide free storage beginning from 2GB).
You can upload the files which you want to share in this online storage and then they have sharing options in which you'll will get the link of the file to be sent and send the email. You're good to go!
Tip : You can store multiple files for backup purposes.

  • Three questions about the MBA...

    Hiya,
Here's my first question: What is the resolution on the iSight camera that's built into the MBA? Is it the same as the ones on the other MacBooks, or is it different? I was reading AppleInsider's review of the MBA and they say that the MBA uses "a similarly lower end video camera" that seems to have a lower resolution than the 1.3 megapixel iSight cameras on the other MacBooks and MacBook Pros. Also, Apple's own specs for the MBA doesn't say specifically what the resolution is for it. But AppleInsider is claiming that pictures taken with the MBA's iSight camera are "visibly softer" and don't work in Photo Booth for some reason. :S (If you'd like to see the AppleInsider review I was looking at, here it is: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/02/04/macbookair_hdd_model_an_in_depthreview.html. Please go to page 5 of this review to see what AppleInsider is talking about with the iSight camera--it's pretty much the first thing they address on that page.)
Also: Is it true that it's not possible to turn off the wi-fi on the MBA? I was doing some window shopping at a Micro Center in my neighborhood and happened to talk about the MBA with some salespeople in the (Windows) laptop department, and they claimed that the wi-fi on it couldn't be turned off. Or, rather, they said that there was no visible, physical wi-fi button on the MBA, so they took that to mean that there was no way to turn the wi-fi off at all. Personally, I find this really hard to believe--surely there's some internal system preference that allows someone to turn off the wi-fi because it's obviously not going to be needed all the time?--but I want to hear from MBA owners here and see what you guys have to say about this.
And finally...assuming the wi-fi can be turned off, how many hours the MBA run? I haven't seen anyone answer this question yet, and I'd really like to know because I don't think I'll be using an MBA with the wi-fi always on.

LOL! I figured as much. I figured that the MBA's like my iPod touch and the wi-fi controls are in the system preferences somewhere. But yeah...those salesmen at MicroCenter were really digging into the MBA as they struggled to turn off some security controls that they'd tripped in their own department and had to talk loudly over their security alarms. To be fair, some of what they said is true:
--for the kind of money you'll have to pony up for even the cheaper MBA model, you can easily get a lot more laptop for the money. Of course, these (Windows) laptop salesmen weren't going to name any MacBooks that were in a different department in the store, but they started naming Sony Vaio's and such.
--there's no built-in optical drive. (Well, DUH. I thought this was understood? And to be fair, a lot of ultraportables don't have optical drives either, right? So this is nothing new.)
--the MBA is underpowered. And...yeah, I suppose that's true if you want to compare the MBA to other MacBooks or some other laptops in general. But if we compare the MBA to ultraportables or other slim/light notebooks, the MBA is still more powerful than them, isn't it? And speaking in terms of what I already have (a 5-year-old HP laptop running Windows XP), I'm sure that the MBA is more powerful and it's gonna run faster than this computer that I'm already using.
And then those salesmen just had to throw in the wi-fi comment. I went "Uh-huh" and walked out and let them keep talking and figure out how to turn off their security alarms. I'm not sure what these salesmen actually know about computers, but one thing was clear to me as I walked out of their department--they're willing to say just about anything to get a sale. I'd hate to think what they would tell me if I was honestly shopping around for one of their Windows laptops--I'd hate to hear the kind of trash they might tell me to make me buy a laptop and/or other products for it. :S

  • About to make the switch internet question

    Hey,
I am just about to make the switch and get a Mac Pro and I have a question that needs answering. I have two Linksys routers a Wireless-G and a Wireless-N. I need to know if I will be able to use either of these routers with a Mac? What I wanna do is hook the mac up directly to the router (Wired) as the main computer on my network and have all my windows computers hooked up to the router on wireless. I wanna get this figured out before I spend that big of a chunk of money.
    Thanks

Yes. A router is not platform specific (mac vs
windows). The only thing you won't be able to do is
upgrade the router's firmware, which requires a
    windows machine.
You most certainly can upgrade the LinkSys firmware from OS X. It doesn't work with Safari, but you can use Firefox, SeaMonkey, or Netscape (possibly others, though I have not tried it with any others).

  • About to make the switch monitor question

    Hey,
I am about to make the switch and get a Mac Pro and I have a question I need answered. Will I be able to use any LCD monitor with the Mac Pro? I need to figure this out because I think the Apple monitors are a bit out of my price range at this point in time.
    Thanks

Which LCD are you talking about?
I have a ViewSonic VE800 VGA LCD and it is fine. Uses the DVI-2-VGA adapter that is included.
I know there is a thread with someone with a problem - not sure how it turned out, whether it was the monitor or video card or something else. Not that many threads in this forum so it should be easy to find. Well, I had to search "Viewsonic": Viewsonic VX2025wm Sleep Problem

  • I need advice about being part of the Twitter Army of Awesome Help

I am grateful for the fact of Mozilla and I use Twitter a lot.
Although I am not technically competent, I do have experience of using Mozilla and Thunderbird for quite some years and am willing to share my experience.
I obviously do not want to make matters worse for questioners and need some advice about how to begin.
Is there a Forum where Folk such as me can share experiences of answering Tweets and also just be given examples how the system works, please, or might it be better for me to resign before I start rather than cause complications for anyone?

Thanks - I hope to have a check there, when I have more time, meanwhile I see that separately I have been sent an email asking for my experience etc.. -
I plan to attend to that when I am less pressed for time, it may not be for some while though - my spirit is willing but resources few, but if I just learn to do some small things it spreads the load - and I guess I have made a very small start - I have wondered about it for years but that Awesome Tweet was the prompt that got me this far!
