Advice about upgrade

I have a VERY old Palm (m500) and it's time for an upgrade. I'd like to get another handheld without a phone. Any recommendations about what would be compatible for data transfer? Thank you.
Post relates to: Palm m500

If you want another Palm branded PDA, you'd better move quickly... The entire line has been discontinued in favor of becoming a cellphone-only company with a new Operating System.
We were advising amazon.com for a source of new units, but their prices have skyrocketed in the last month!
The latest devices sold were the Z22 (entry-level model), the E2 (mid-range model), and the TX (top model).  The Z22 has the least amount of "extras", while the TX adds Wifi and a large screen.
Be advised, your m500 runs a different OS than the 3 models I listed above.  Your PIM data will transfer, but there is no guarantee that any third-party programs will run on the newer devices.
Unless Palm comes out with a PDA device in their new lineup running WebOS, those seem to be your choices right now.  I'd search the internet heavily for the best price.

  • Need advice about upgrades

I just bought my daughter a mbp for graduation. It is a mid 2012 15.4", 4GB, 500 GB HHD i7 2.3 GHz. She is going to use it for college and she is starting a side gig doing photograpy for extra money while in college. After I bought it I was doing some reading on here and read that a lot of you using photoshop prefer 16 GB. I read somewhere that the 4 GB can only be upgraded to 8 GB but I also read that the mbp supports 16 GB so I think I could do that 3rd party later anyway. I am wondering if you guys think it is worth the extra $255 to exchange this one now for the 8GB with the 256 GB SSD. Any advice from your experience would be greatly appreciated as I am giving it to her tonight for graduation.

    mid 2012 15.4", 4GB, 500 GB HHD i7 2.3 GHz.
The MBP you purchased for your daughter is an excellent computer.  May I suggest getting the additional RAM from OWC or Crucial.  A 16GB kit is currently $125 and you can upgrade it yourself.   I'd keep the 500GB hard drive (not get an SSD) and instead invest in an external drive for backup and extra storage.   (BTW, did you get AppleCare with this MBP.  If not, I'd certainly recommend it.)
Exchanging your MBP for another model with a 256GB SSD?   Well ... imho it's not a good idea.  It's more money for less capability (even if the SSD is modestly faster than a hard drive, it's half the capacity of the 500GB hard drive).  If your daughter makes good use of the MBP, and even more if she really gets into digital photography, a 256GB SSD is not going to be nearly enough storage (for the system, applications and data combined) and you will be looking at getting an external hard drive anyway.
For comparison purposes, I have a late 2009 MBP with 8GB RAM, 750GB hard drive and it runs Adobe CS6 Design Suite (Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator & Acrobat), Aperture and Final Cut perfectly - plenty of speed and performance.  Your 2012 MBP with 16GB will be even better for these apps.

  • Advice about upgrading

Hello out there. I have a PowerMac G5 single 1.8 processor with 250GB HDD and 4 GB RAM. Single 1.8 you say? Yes, one processor on my dual 1.8 went bad so I am rocking the single 1.8. A very unique model
So I'm thinking of selling and upgrading to a computer for what I think I can get on Craigslist ($700 or so) So, this is currently my 3rd place computer in terms of speed and I am thinking a new Mac Mini might be a good replacement? I'll need to run Adobe Creative Suite but not any video apps or anything like that. My primary machine is a quad 2.66 7 gigs RAM blah blah blah.
    What do you guys think?

Hi Pete, the new Mini with 4GB of RAM looks sweet for $799, way faster than even a F6 Dual 1.8!
Just depends if your Software will run in Snow Leopard, mine won't for the most part & I had to get a used G5/Quad/2.5

  • Need some advice about upgrading my RAM.

    I own a Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5.
I use Final Cut Pro 5 and want to make some upgrades to my Memory.
I've already got 2 GB DDDR2 SDRAM, and I'd like to add 2 GB more.
I found this webpage, but being naive at this stuff, I thought I'd run this by the experts here...
    http://www.memorystore.com/product.asp?modelid=18738&famid=132&oemdesc=2GB+Kit&q ty=2
I was thinking of getting the Samsung brand, as I heard it was exactly what Apple uses.
I was also confused because I got my G5 in summer of 2006, and I can't be sure which model number I have. All I can guess is I have the "Late 2005" model.
    Thanks anyone for the help.
    Sincerely,
    yoshi

    Hi-
I'm gonna save you a bunch of money (and possible headache), and direct you to guaranteed Mac compatible RAM.
The page lists RAM for the dual core Late 2005 G5..
Check your system profiler, under Memory, and confirm that you have DDR2 PC4200 memory installed.
You can confirm your memory needs on this page, and confirm your G5 model using the serial number tag, described in this document.

  • Advice about buying new Macbook

    Hi all,
I'm trying to decide between the Macbook Air and the Macbook Pro with Retina display, and I'd like to see if people have advice about which one would better serve my needs.
This is my only computer, and while it needs to be portable, it doesn't need to necessarily be the lightest possible (Macbook Air).
What I do want is at least 256GB of storage. Right now I have 156GB, and I'm almost maxing it out. I've had to take things off my hard drive to make more room. I have a large iTunes library and a large iPhoto library, and I want all those things on my hard drive.
I also want good performance because that's where my 2008 Macbook is not doing so well - gets very slow, esp when iPhoto and similar apps are open.
I need to be able to work with several apps open - Word, Excel, Adobe Reader, Chrome, etc. I don't need to do a lot of gaming or sophisticated video editing or anything like that - I work mostly with MS Office programs.
So is the Macbook Air good enough or should I get the Macbook Pro?
    Thanks!

The Air should be ample for your described needs.  If weight is not a consideration, the Air has by far the best battery run time, so if a lot of work is done without an AC outlet available, that is some thing to take into account.
The Pro has a superior display and is a more powerful machine, but the extra power is not needed for what you have described.
Personally I would urge you to consider installing as much storage as you can afford.  Using external HDDs in the field gets very old quickly.  Over time data has a habit of increasing.
One important point to keep in mind, with both the Air and the Pro, no future upgrades are available at this time so configure the unit accordingly.  I would spend my money for upgrades in this order, storage, RAM, CPU.
    Ciao.

  • About Upgrade specification for each Firefox version

    Dear Everyone,
I would like to ask all of you about Upgrade specification of each firefox version.
    <Platform>
    Window Vista 32bit / Windows 7 32bit
    <Target version>
    - Firefox 3.6.19
    - Firefox 4.0.1
    - Firefox 5.0.1
    <List of question>
    1. Is Firefox 3.6.19 upgraded to 5.0.1 automatically?
    *Auto update option is enabled
My understanding is that only 4.0.1 is upgraded to 5.0.1 automatically
    2. Is there any diffrerence between Auto upgrade and Manual upgrade ( run Firefox Setup 5.0.1 ), when I upgrade Firefox to 5.0.1 from 4.0.1
For example, once uninstallation will run then install happens by Manual upgrade, or just overwrite files and modules by Auto upgrade, etc..
    3. Which keys and value should be changed to control Auto upgrade timing in About:config option?
For example, just after 5 mins, Auto upgrade will happen by changing from xxx to xxx in value x, etc...
It would be very helpful if you kindly give any advice or commnet.
Thank you very much for your support in advance.

    Hi Nick & Peter,
Thank you for your answer. Now I have another question: Do I have to upgrade the relay server when I upgrade afaria to SP2? and again when I upgrade afaria to SP4?? or Do I have to upgrade the relay just when I get to the afaria 7 to SP4 level? For example:
The supported upgrade path would be (scenario 1):
Afaria 7.0 Service Pack 1 Hot Fix 17 (Current)
Afaria 7.0 Service Pack 2 (upgrade also the relay to the versión reléase for SP2)
Afaria 7.0 Service Pack 4 (upgrade to the versión reléase for SP4 RS 16.0.0.1324)
Afaria 7.0 Service Pack 4 Hot Fix 3 (Recommended)
The supported upgrade path would be (scenario 2):
Afaria 7.0 Service Pack 1 Hot Fix 17 (Current)
    Afaria 7.0 Service Pack 2
Afaria 7.0 Service Pack 4 (upgrade to the versión reléase for SP4 RS 16.0.0.1324)
Afaria 7.0 Service Pack 4 Hot Fix 3 (Recommended)
Also I would like to know, If this relay server is shared with a SMP Server (production), there would be any known issue with the RSOE running on the mobile platform???
I'll wait for your kind answer...
    Best Regards,

  • Problem about Upgrade 9.2.04 to 11gr2

    Hi everybody
    I have a trouble about upgrade from 9.2.0.4 to 11gr2. Can i directly upgrade to 11gr2 or i must upgrade from 9.2.0.4 => 11G => 11gr2?
If possible pls give me some advices and material to execute it.
    Thanks all
    Edited by: 969743 on 02:20 06-11-2012

To upgrade to 11gR2, you must be at 9.2.0.8
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e23633/preup.htm#i1007814
So one option is that that you apply the 9.2.0.8 patch to your current install (follow the 9.2.0.8 patch README steps), then follow the upgrade guide (link above) to upgrade to 11gR2 using DBUA
Other option is to export from 9.2.0.4, create a new empty 11.2.0.3 database and perform an import - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e23633/expimp.htm

  • Advice about buying a new hard drive

I have a TOSHIBA Satellite L25-S1216. I have not been able to boot into Windows XP for 3 years using the factory Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD and the Fully Recover procedure on the back of the DVD packae. I have been using Linux for the past 3 years. Ubuntu SMART test disk utility tells me I have 20 bad hard drive sectors. I have concluded I should buy a new hard drive, since mine has 20 bad sectors. My current hard drive is ATA-6, so I know I need a PATA compatible hard drive. I'd like to increase to maybe 60 GB from the current 40 GB. I'd also like to go with a solid state drive, but there don't appear to be many PATA compatible solid state drives.
And I don't want to get too complicated or expensive; I want to stay with my current Windows XP. Not sure if a SATA PATA interface adapter would work to allow me to use a SATA solid state hard drive or not. I know (from reading knowledge base posts) there is also the potential problem of the older BIOSs not recognizing the newer Advanced Drive Format drives.
QUESTION: Does anybody have any advice about buying a hard drive that would work for me? How can I be reasonably sure a hard drive I buy is compatible with my computer?
    Thank you,
    Bob
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

either get a pata drive (you can get larger than the stock 40gb) or use your $ towards a more current new/used laptop.  pata ssd would be a waste and I doubt adapter would work.  also, ms is dropping support for xp so it would be a good time to upgrade to something with a more current os as well.

  • Advice about an external DVD drive

    Hi there,
Pardon the basic questions, a computer genius I am not.
I have a rather elderly iMac G4 running 10.4.11 and it has never been able to even see DVDs. I am facing necessary software upgrades which come in a DVD format. Is an external DVD drive what I get? Will my poor iMac see a DVD coming from an external drive? I have always found it annoying that I have the DVD player software but I can't use it.
Note: if a solution contains advice about replacing my hard drive, please know that particular drama happened this summer when the original hard drive died. After much angst, my iMac is working well; I just need to be able to load software in a DVD format.
    thank you!
    suzy

Yes an external DVD optical drive will work. The cost needs to be considered, is it worth it.
You could opt to go the cheapest way possible; search Ebay on the PC side(since a high % are not as overall savvy as Mac users) look for the older Sony CDR burners, these were blue external enclosures which housed CDR burners. You can purchase modern DVDR player/burners cheaply now a days and install the optical drive into one of those Sony enclosures. The reason I suggest Sony is way back when they were expensive but well made and work to this day all the way to Leopard. You should be able to pick one up for $25.00 plus a good optical drive for less than $50.00
BTW "necessary software upgrades" if you don't mind what are the upgrades and why only on DVD media? There are other ways to skin this cat.

  • Advice on upgrades to a 5 year old system

    Hi there,
I mostly use my PC for editing in Premiere Pro CS3 although I do play the odd game. Unfortunately performance isn't great in Premiere or games (possibly due to the Quadro graphics card).
I'm considering either upgrading the CPU from an Athlon X2 6000+,  or buying a new motherboard and a few other innards. I was was wondering if you would mind giving me some feedback as to whether this would improve performance significantly and if it's worth it?
I'm based in the UK and I've jotted down some prices against the kit I'm considering, however don't let it put you off offering advice about the tech if you're in a different region :-)
    Current spec
    Mobo: Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe
    Processor: Athlon X2 6000+
    RAM: Corsair 6GB DDR2 Memory
    Video: Quadro FX 4600
    HDD: S-ATA 72000rpm 250GB (if I've remembered right)
    OS: Windows 7x64
Option 1: Upgrade with the existing motherboard
Keep the above spec but upgrade the CPU to an AMD Phenom II X4 945 (£65). I wouldn't want to do more as the motherboard is old so I'd have to be equally old kit. I'd also probably not get an SSD as the motherboard only supports S-ATA 3Gb/s and I gather the latest kit is much improved.
Option 2: Upgrade with a different motherboard:
    Mobo: M5A78L-M/USB3 (£65) or M5A97 (£30)
Processor: AMD Bulldozer FX-Series FX-8120 Black Edition (£118)
    RAM: 16GB DDR3 1066 (£55) or 8gb (£40)
    HDD: Possibly intall an SSD
    Windows 8: x64 (£25)
    - And then sell the existing motherboard, CPU and RAM.However this will probably be too expensive for me at the moment.
    Mobo
I know the more expensive motherboard would be better but would I really see a difference if I opted for the cheaper one? I'm trying to stick with Asus if possible as I've been really impressed with this model - it's lasted for years and I still have a few upgrade paths available.  Most stable mobo I've ever bought.
    Memory
I'm taking into consideration Premiere CS3 is 32 and so would only see 3GB. Originally I was going to try and use my existing DDR2 till I realised it wouldn't be supported.
    Graphics
I could either keep the existing Quadro FX 4600, or I could replace it with a mid-range GeForce GTX 650 1024MB GDDR5 (£80). With the improvements in technology, is the Quadro still a good card to have or would a GeForce be any better (and also open up the possibiity of some light gaming?)
I originally purchased the Quadro for animation in Maya along with editing in Premiere and Photoshop, but I've not had the opportunity to do that so whilst I'd like to keep the option open, it's not essential. Any thoughts?
    Hard drive
Windows 7 currently tells me that the hard drive is the slowest component in the system but I'm holding off getting an SSD as I've concerns I'd run out of space on the one I could afford if I bought it as a primary drive.
Or I may end up leaving it alone if it doesn't look like it's worth upgrading the existing system and I can't afford to build a new one. What do you think?

    >Premiere Pro CS3 doesn't run perfectly under my current setup, but it does run
What does that statement mean... what are your problems?
Also be aware that an AMD does not have some of the hardware commands that an Intel CPU has, so video editing is NEVER going to be very fast with an AMD... which means you need a completely new system with a different kind of motherboard
Plus, it is not until CS5 that PPro makes use of the power of selected nVidia cards, so your current card has very little to do with video editing besides "simple" display to your monitor
    >HDD: S-ATA 72000rpm 250GB
Presuming you really mean you have only one 7,200 rpm hard drive, the best thing you can do is add a 2nd 7200rpm hard drive for all video data
Trying to use only ONE Hard Drive for Video Editing
You are a music conductor, with a baton that you use to point to various parts of the
orchestra... this is like Windows pointing to various parts of the hard drive to do
Windows housekeeping or to load program segments for various functions
Now, at the same time and with the same hand... while still using the baton to conduct
the orchestra... pick up a bow and play a fiddle... this would be doing something with
your video file at the same time as all the other work
You as a person cannot do both at the same time with the same hand
A computer is a LITTLE better, in that it can switch from one kind of task to another
very quickly... but not quickly enough for EASY video editing
You need AT LEAST two hard drives (separate drives, never a partition
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650708 for more) with Windows (or Mac OS) and software
on your boot drive, and video files on a 2nd drive so the boot drive is not slowed down
    by trying to do everything
    Partition = Crash http://forums.adobe.com/thread/957286

For overall power supply wattage, add the requirement for each device in your system, then multiply by 1.8. Furthermore, power supplies are more efficient and reliable when loaded to 30% - 70% of maximum capacity.)

  • Need advice on upgrade from Snowleopard to Lion on MacBk Pro (15" late 2008)

I want to be able to synch my calendar on new iPhone, home MacBook Pro and office PC (with MS Office)... and I think I have figured out that I need to get Lion on my Mac instead of Snow Leopard.  Are there things I need to do to make this upgrade actually work?  I am a big user, but not so much a smart Mac user... kind of new to it.. advice appreciated.  pitfalls or suggestions... any reasons not to do it?

    Sara MacApple wrote:
So, do you have any advice about how I can synch my MacBookPro calendar with my iPhone?
Apple has incorporated features like that into iCloud, then restricted that to only users of 10.7 Lion as  leverage. They won't allow iCloud on 10.6 because people wouldn't upgrade. 10.6 runs a lot of expensive previously purchased software that there isn't a upgrade out yet. If people install Lion anyway on older hardware it slows most machines down and that encourages them to buy a new Mac prematurely. So you see what's going on here.
Apple changes stuff way too fast, then they quickly burn their bridges and previous users  behind them in the process. For instance, Apple doesn't support 10.5 at all anymore with security and stabilty updates, and that's a mere 4 year old OS X version.
Not to praise Microsoft, but they do support 10 year old XP still, 5 year old Vista and Windows 7 is going to be supported for at least 10 years or even longer. Windows 8 is going to run Windows 7 software too. So with Windows PC you can run your hardware until it drops dead, buy your software once every 10 years.
Apple has this crazy notion that we all should be replacing our hardware and expensive software on a 3 year basis. When in reality properly taken care of Mac hardware can last a decade easily, I have a XP friend who's Dell desktop is over 10 years old and still works fine.
If your a luxury consumer and just use your Mac for the basics,  can keep up with the 3-4 year expensive hardware and software changes, then buy all means buy a new Mac with Lion and get iCloud and then sync to your iPhone. Use the old Mac as backup for software that isn't ready for 10.7 yet.
If your more a Pro and/or conservative user, perhaps have a heavy investment in software, your machine is working perfectly, have a more longterm objective, then you should consider forgoing the new OS X features until third party software has released Lion compatible versions/updates and then make a decision to upgrade hardware and software at the same time so your workflow continues with the least disturbance.
Apple prefers to cater to the luxury consumer more than the "Pro" market because the luxury consumer can be leveraged to buy hardware on a faster upgrade cycle. The Pro user is trying to make money and therefore thinks more longterm to extract value out of their purchases.
I know this is a long winded answer, but since your machine is 4 years old and Lion will be slow on it, require opening up the machine to install RAM and replace all your software, you might as well buy a new machine to get the feature you want. If your not prepared to buy a new machine, then forgo it and learn to live without the new feature, your machine could last another 4 years easy and by then there might be no more computers, just all tablets or something, because Apple is ALWAYS changing.
If you take a serious look at Lion, you'll realize it's a transitional OSX version, to what exactly and what form of new hardware it will run on (perhaps even Apple's own processors) is a mystery. So Iv'e decided to stay on 10.6 for all the software choices, printers works just fine to, even on my new 2011 Mac and just wait it out and not thrown several thousand dollars away in a mere 3 years for no reason. When Apple gets to wherever they are going and settles down, the software industry catches up, by then my hardware will likely be ready for a upgrade, if I don't like waht Apple is doing, then I will switch to a alternative. But I won't be lead around on a leash and my wallet abused by Apple any longer, they need to grow up and act like a mature computer products company and quit dropping support for older OS X versions.
