Advice and feedback on external display use...

I bought an external display today (the Hanns-G HW194D) and am loving the increase in real estate. Everything is working fine, but I have some questions/concerns in using it with the MacBook closed. I was using it with the MacBook open but saw here on a post how to use it closed, which is very cool. But I'm wondering...will it get too hot? It feels ok, but I'm wondering what people who have used it for extended periods in this configuration have run into. There's no reason I can't run it open, it just seems kind of pointless because I don't use the dual screen feature, I just wanted a larger display to use when the MacBook is "docked".
Thanks in advance for any help and/or advice!

Interesting question, so I decided to test it. Starting with my MB core duo 1.83 GHz in extended desktop mode, connected to a 19" LCD monitor, I took its temperature:
CPUs were about 120F, enclosure bottom about 80F and heatsinks about 111F.
Then I closed the lid and ran in clamshell mode for a while. Temperatures were: CPUs about 124F, enclosure 86F and heatsinks 116F.
Note: the room temperature probably went up a little during the test.
I was just doing web browsing, nothing to generate much heat.

  • When i connect my mac book pro to an external display using a VGA cable and adaptor, the external display splits into several different columns of the same screen overlapping one another. Does anybody have any ideas as to why this happens?

I have used different VGA to mini port adaptors, different VGA cables and connected them to different external monitors and prjectors but the same thing happens. I am starting to think there may be a problem with the macbook itself however, when i have used a HDMI lead and adaptor to external monitors the external display is fine.

  • 27" iMac and two external displays -- using both TB ports best?

    Greetings to all.
Currently I have a 2011 Mac Mini to which is connected a 30" Dell display via a Dual Link DVI adapter, and another Dell 21" display via HDMI. I'm planning on getting the 27" iMac and want to check the best way to connect these two displays. While the 30" will still use the Dual Link DVI adapter, should I connect the 21" display via the iMac's second TB port, or via HDMI?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The iMac hasn't got a HDMI port, so you will have to connect your second monitor to your Thunderbolt port, using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter in order to be able to connect it to the computer

  • My Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) won't connect to an external display using my MiniDP to VGA Cable.

I'm on a Macbook Pro (Mid-2012) on Mac OS X 10.8.3 (currently downloading the update to 8.4). When I plug in my Mini Displayport to VGA adapter to my Mac, the screen flickers blue for a second and the Display Settings window detects the other monitor and allows me to rearrange the screen, but it does not project anything onto the other monitor. However, I tried connecting an Apple Thunderbolt Monitor to this computer today, and it worked. This wasn't a problem before, as I was able to connect this Mac to other LCD projects before. Furthermore, I don't think it's an issue with the adapter either because it's relatively new. I also tried plugging in the adapter of another Mac (which was working fine) into my Mac, but it didn't work either.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. Restarting the computer with everything plugged in
    2. Pressing Command + F1 when it's plugged
    Any advice would be helpful!

  • Can I use my macbook pro mid 2012 as an external display using thunderbolt port

    Hi,
I want to use my macbook pro (mid 2012) screen as an external display for a raspberry pi using a HDMI to Thunderbolt cable, via the thunderbolt port on the macbook pro. Would this be possible? Can the macbook pro's thunder bolt port act as an input and is any additional software required?
I look forward to hearing from you.
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You are referring to Target Display mode. Target Display mode can only be used in 27-inch iMacs and iMacs with Thunderbolt, not MacBooks Pro > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
Unfortunately, you can't use the MacBook Pro as a display. It doesn't support the monitor mode

  • Can i connect an external display using HD3000 after the discrete gpu has stopped working?

Say for some reason the HD 6490m is fried and I can only use the HD 3000; will I be able to connect the laptop to an external 1080p display via thunderbolt?
Technically it should work, i know. But i've tried it with gfxCardStatus 2.3 and nothing happens until i allow the radeon to work. My question is: after the amd stops working, will the computer allow the HD 3000 to connect to an external display? Is there some kind of limitation so that only the 6490m can use the thunderbolt port?
    Early 2011 15" MBP running 10.9.4

    Cheers!

    Thanks for the fast reply!
So i assume this is because Apple uses a custom processor or because of the motherboard that inhibits it somehow, right? I'm asking that because some hd3000 chips in other systems are able to support a second display.
Anyway, thanks a lot. I will be careful not to lose the amd then

  • Tecra A9 - Connecting two external displays using Express Port Replicator

    Hi,
I have a Tecra A9 and Express Port Replicator.
I'm trying to connect 2 external displays, one connected on the notebook output and the other connected on the docking station (notebook lid closed, not using the notebook display).
I can only get one to work, does anyone know if this is possible?

    Hi
I think you want to connect one monitor to VGA and the other to DVI port.
    Is it right?
    Well, I found this doc:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB7B0201000CR01.htm
It depends on the used Tecra A9, if you can get a picture on the DVI out port on the Express Port Replicator (PA3508E-1PRP) or not.
The DVI port on the on the Express Port Replicator is only supported on machines with ATI or nVidia graphic card.
If you have a INTEL graphic card the DVI port on the on the Express Port Replicator is NOT supported.

  • Softproof in Lightroom and Photoshop on external display not matching

    Hi,
When I soft proof an image in Lightroom (5) and in Photoshop (CS6) on my external display there is a noticeable difference between the two proofs.
This is the case both with "simulate paper & ink" on and off (with matching settings in both applications) and with a variety of different profiles being used. On my laptop screen the proofs always match (between Photoshop and Lightroom).
On the external display with soft proofing off there is an exact match between images in LR and PS. With soft proofing on saturated areas of images (particularly reds, greens and yellows) become noticeably less saturated and blocked up in LR as compared to PS. Subdued colours appear to match. It's almost like they are both using the same profile but Lightroom is squashing it into a smaller gamut. I'm fairly sure PS is correct and LR is the one with something going wrong.
I'd like to sort it as I'd prefer to soft proof in Lightroom as that's where I print from. I've read up a lot on colour management and can't find a solution.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Tom
(I'm on a Macbook pro running 10.8.4 and the external display is an NEC Spectraview 271 (euro version of PA271W), the display is calibrated and profiled with Spectraview 5, with an i1 Display Pro. Working space in PS is Prophoto RGB and it's set to preserve embedded profiles. I've checked with various test images but mostly been using Bill Atkinon's printer test image. I set up the image in LR and PS to match on screen position and with the same colour (white) background, I can then flick back and forth and there should be no change but there is and it's very obvious.)

I'm having trouble with Lightroom 5 soft proofing with reds too.  To rid my propossed print of a gamut warning I must totally desaturate or change my paper profile to glossy (or both).  This is odd because my monitor is calibrated, I'm using the correct paper profiles etc and when I ignore the gamut warning my prints are looking good. This isn't helpful to you but at least your not alone....

  • Connect to 2 external displays using 2 thunderbolt to hdmi cables

I have a new iMac which has 2 thunderbolt ports.  I was told that I can add 2 displays using these ports with thunderbolt to hdmi cables.  However when I do this only one screen connects.  The other remains blank (and off).

    It's supposed to...

  • External display: using my 12" like a desktop...

does anyone know if it is indeed true that I have to physically shut my powerbook in order to run only my external monitor? is there some way to turn on the computer from the external (apple) keyboard so that I don't have to open it open, just to turn it on and then close the lid?
as it is, I open my powerbook, turn it on, wait for it to start booting, then close the lid, and I am able to use my external monitor as the primary display. I can even open my powerbook up and the display will be blank (which is fine, because I don't need it). if the computer goes to sleep, I can turn wake it up without opening it by moving the mouse. but once the external display is my primary display, I sometime run the computer with the lid open because it seems to run cooler that way (and the fan always wants to kick on when I have the lid closed). If the lid is open and I wake it up, the built-in dispaly takes over and I have to go thru the process of closing the lid, re-waking it up, etc. I know this isn't too difficult, but it would be nice if there were a more efficient way--perhaps a setting somewhere? I can't find it if there is one, and I also can't figure out if there is a power-on key combination for my external keyboard.
    powerbook g4 12" 1.33GHZ   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I was thinking about something like this.
The magnet in the lid is that close to the computer everytime you have it closed…so there shouldn't be any damage when you take a weak magnet. And since there is just the battery and the optical drive no data can be corrupted.
Older G3 iBooks have the switch in the lid (halfway again), but I think th PBs have it all near the arrow keys.
Maybe another time I can do a better drawing (like a construcion manual) if needed.

  • Connecting to an external display using the setting optimised for built in screen?

i am having trouble connecting to an external display with the lid closed and the settings is optimised for built in display.
it was working nicely until yesterday when i changed the resolution.
and now i cant take it to optimised for built in display, only if the lid is opened and i want it closed.
can i know how to return it to the setting (optimised for built in display) with the lid closed?

  • New macbook pro 15" won't detect external display using vga adapter

    Hi there
I've tried multiple monitors and connectors but i can't get my mac to detect an external display. it responds as if nothing is connected. I'm fully up to date software-wise.
    any ideas?
    thanks for any help!!

Hi, I'm having the same problem, tried to connect both a Viewsonic and a Hanspree. Was happy to find your response here, but I just got the Moshi adapter with the macbook pro so it seems silly it would have gone bad. :/
I suppose I'll take it into the Apple Store and see what they say. Thanks!

                                      </trh:tableLayout>
    Now,
suppose i have following values for some/any row,
    value1=20, value2="abc", value3=009, value4="Language"
How can i retrieve these values in java script (if in backing bean then very good)
