Advice appreciated

Hello,
I made the switch from PC to Mac over the summer. I keep wondeirng why I did not make the switch earlier. I have just purchased a G5 Powermac with Dual 2.0 and 2 Gigs of Ram. In addition I purchased Final Cut Studio. I have very little experience with video editing, but I had the means to purchase these items so I did. My question to all of you, is what would your recommendations be to a new user who is looking into learning how to use Final Cut? I realize I have a very, very, long road ahead of me, and I know the learning curve is going to be steep. Any advice would be much appreciated. I am looking into purchasing the Apple Pro Training Series for FCP 5.
Thank you to you all.

The first thing I did was sit down with a buddy that has Final Cut and have him show me basic editing. Then we worked through a personal project together.
After that, I read (not quite done yet) my manuals.
I suggest you read the quick-start, then jump in. Continue to read the manuals as much as possible, but mainly use them as a first reference. If you run into a question, consult your manuals first. Then, come on here and ask it. There's lots of other tutorial sites that people will post for you to go check out. I also recommend going through the tutorial that came with FCStudio.

  • Late 09 MB Pro 13" now on Mountain Lion keeps crashing (spinning wheel) and getting VERY hot. Even Safe Mode slow to work. Managed a back up last night and wondering should I put the original ios disc back in to take it back to SL. Advice appreciated!

    Hi
For past year or so my mac book has been getting gradually worse. Spinning wheel, and overheating, last night I had trouble just getting it to start in Safe Mode (been using the on/off button a lot lately!)
Problem may be related to media - iMovie followed by iPhoto are the most likely programs to bring everything to a stop but not always.
I'm not an expert although I did figure out how to re install the operating system from the partition with help from this forum a couple of months ago but it didn't fix the problem.
The iOS is Mountain Lion (via Lion)
I managed to do a back- up last night and now wondering if I should re- install Snow Leopard from the original discs that came with the laptop.
Got a lot of media on there (replaced the 250gb drive with a  Samsung 1tb a while back which is less than half full.
Never had to use any of my back-ups before so:
If I re install the original operating system will I be able to be selective in what I put back on later?
    and -
Will there be any issues putting a Mountain Lion back-up into a Snow Leopard iOS?
A lot of whats there isn't needed but don't want to lose it completely.
    Advice appreciated thanks

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU|I/O' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the window will be empty. If you get output like this:
    kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error
the boot drive is failing, or there's some other hardware fault in the storage subsystem.
If you get output like this:
    kernel[0] <Debug>: ** GPU Debug Info Start **
    kernel[0] <Debug>: ** GPU Debug Info End **
there's a fault in the graphics processor or logic board. The two kinds of output are not mutually exclusive, but if you get both, a logic-board fault is likely.

Log in to the Developer forum. You will find instructions on how to install the lastest beta. Your problem is the beta you have installed has expired. All of them did on October 5; you will find hundreds of threads discussing this. If you have a beta it is assumed that you will continue as a beta tester, so a simple update using iTunes will not work.
If you no longer want to be a beta tester install the GM 7.0.2 by restoring from iTunes using DFU mode.

  • I have OS X 10.8.5 trying to upgrade. Have downloaded latest OS X Maverick but to install I am prompted for the Admin Password. I don't believe one was ever set up. I have tried my Apple Id Password but not accepted, Advice appreciated.

My system is Mac HD OX S 10.8.5. I want to upgrade 10.9.1 and have downloaded it. However, to install it I am prompted for the Admin Password. I don't believe one was ever set up. I have tried my Apple Id Password but not accepted, Advice appreciated?

If you have 10.8.5 you don't have a PowerPC Mac (PPC).  PPC is for pre-2006 Macs.   Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to make sure you have an Intel Mac and that you didn't flip the 5 and 8 in your operating system indication.  If you actually have 10.5.8 but you have Intel it gets a lot more complicated to install 10.9.
10.5.8 is the maximum for PowerPC.
10.6 can be upgraded on Intel with this tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
And it also help you get up to 10.6.6 or 10.6.8 as needed.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
will help someone with 10.5.8 determine if they are ready to jump to 10.7 or later.
If you have 10.8.5, you must install 10.9.0 first (free from the Mac App Store) to get to 10.9.1.
    Backup your data:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
and check http://www.roaringapps.com/ and your printer, scanner, and peripheral  drivers are compatible with third party vendors before upgrading to 10.9.

I'm sorry, but your sister, unless she had already turned on the "Find my iPhone" feature and the person who took the phone has not disabled it, is out of luck. She should report the theft to local police authorities, including the serial number of her iPhone. While her experience is unfortunate, there are good reasons why Apple cannot do anything else about it.
I hope she gets her phone back.
    Best of luck.

  • Email issue with ISP - advice appreciated

We seem to be having a strange issue with email and our ISP.
Using OS-X mail, all patched up and on the latest versions of everything. Every two or three months email stops working with no warning, errors or notification. The ISP says that we have been blocked due to excessive failed password attempts, even though it's been working for two months and no passwords have been changed.
The only way around this is to have the ISP unblock the ipaddress and on the local system delete the ISP certificates from Keychain (login) access, although on one occasion when the ISP was being particularly slow, simply deleting the certificates did the trick.
I'm not getting anywhere with the ISP - I am unable to get past first line support and pre-formatted answers telling me how to reset my passwords and what combination of numbers, letters and characters make up a good password. (Nativespace in case you're wondering!)
Advice appreciated. "Leave Nativespace" is already being considered,
    thanks and regards
    Simon

Meant to say, the certificates are up to date and haven't expired when the email fails.
My system has several email accounts going through the same server at the ISP - sometimes they all fail, sometimes only one or two.

  • Where are the actual Aperture files located? Only in the application? I am transitioning to Lightroom and would like to only move some of the files. Advice appreciated. Also anyone know how to transfer in with edits?

Where are the actual Aperture files located? Only in the application? I am transitioning to Lightroom and would like to only move some of the files. Advice appreciated. Also anyone know how to transfer in with edits? Using iMac, OS X, most recent Aperture and Lightroom 5.7 with plugin for Aperture.

    Define "the Aperture files".
    Read this concise guide.
The files you imported into an Aperture Library can be exported (at any time, and repeatedly) using the command "File ▹ Export ▹ Originals".  Your Originals are never altered.  What went in is what comes out.
Adjustments and changes to the metadata that you made since creating an Image in Aperture by importing a file are saved to a text file.  This file is combined, on-the-fly, with the Original to create the Image that you see in Aperture.  There is no file saved to disk that is the full-size Image.  Thumbnails are saved, and Previews are saved.  These are JPG files, almost always smaller than the Original.  They are not substitutes for the Image for the use you have.
When you need a file of an Image to use in another program, you export the Image from Aperture.  "Export" means "Make me a file of this Image according to these file specs I'm providing".  The way to get files of your adjusted Images is simple:  create them by exporting.  Specify "Original size", and use a loss-less image-file format (e.g. TIFF 16-bit) if you want to retain as much visual information as possible.
Search the Web for information about transitioning from Aperture to Lightroom.  Note that I say "transitioning".  You cannot move a database from one format to another without significant changes, and likely some loss of information.  Adobe provides a tool and some instructions.  I strongly recommend working out the process step-by-step, and then proceeding with first a few Images, then a bushel-ful, and stopping to use the first few, the the bushel-ful, before committing your entire collection to the process.
As always, never use any computer file without having a back-up.
We have seen mixed reports here of the success of the LR tool that creates a LR database from your Aperture database.
If you want to carefully define the process, and test and refine it, use the excellent process-development, analysis, and execution program inShort.
Sadly, there is not and can never be a good, thorough re-positioning of the digital assets in your Aperture Library to become digital assets in a LR database.  Just as a metaphor for any user contemplating transitioning to another digital asset manager:  that would be like digging up a house in one country, planting it in a hole in another country, and expecting to be able to use the toilet and the sinks, turn on the lights, cook dinner, and sleep soundly.

    Kirby.

  • Can't Boot Up After Software Update -- Advice Appreciated.

    Hi all,
I've experienced what seems to be a relatively common problem -- after installing the latest Tiger software update, my machine can't boot up. If I try to log in, it just freezes on the blue background screen. Holding 'shift' to enter Safe Mode just makes the computer shut down. I've tried the advice from Apple listed here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
I just got a variety of messages, all of which say effectively the same thing: 'Macintosh HD cannot be repaired.'
What can I do from here, bearing in mind I don't have an install disk. Is there anything I can do without it?
If I were to borrow a friend's Install Disk (they have Leopard), could I delete everything on my computer and re-install Leopard, and have it work? Or will the problems with my iMac carry over to a new installation?
(I suspected something was wrong the morning before my iMac was able to boot -- I was getting 'page in/page out' errors when I tried to extract .rar files, or move large files to an external HD, so thankfully I took the chance to make back-ups of everything).
Any hints or ideas would be unbelievably appreciated -- I'd hate to have to buy a new iMac (for the expense, not because I don't want a new one).

You can erase everything and start over, but you should Zero the Disk first, but also you need an Install Disc, you can buy Sno/10.6 online, for Leo/10.5 you have to call Apple, who may also supply you with a replacement disk for the original if you have your Serial# handy.
For other sources of Tiger/10.4, See Tom's, (Texas Mac Man), great info on where/how to find/get Tiger...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9755670&#9755670
You might try this a few times to see if you can fix your Disk...
Tough without a Tiger Disk, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(space between fsck and -fy important)
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.

  • New Mac User Facing Sudden System Slowdowns - Advice Appreciated

I recently purchased a MacPro for video editing, switching from Premiere on my PC.
Everything was working great for the past month, and now suddenly I've been having terrible slowdowns in Final Cut Pro. Shortly after these slowdowns occured (constant dropped frames), I tried to restart the system and received a black screen with messages:
    exited abnormally, bad system call;
    respawning too quickly; throttling
I restarted, and this time the computer seemed to start up normally, but I'm still experiencing the slow performance and the dropped frames in Final Cut.
I'm fairly adept at solving performance issues in a WinXP environment, but am very new to this.
If someone could give me some troubleshooting info, I'd greatly appreciate it. Could this be a RAM issue? I did purchase extra RAM from a third party to up my total from 1 GB to 3 GB shortly after I purchased the Mac Pro. I'm also using an ATI X1900 graphics card purchased through Apple.
The only thing I have done to the system over the last couple days before this happened was download a couple free plug-ins for Final Cut and connect the Mac to the internet through an ethernet cable coming from the same router that is attached to my PC.
Again, any help, general or specific, would be greatly appreciated.

I use Final Cut Express and I wouldn't have installed the "free" plugins at all. Best advice: remove them and reinstall Final Cut Pro over your current installation of Final Cut Pro. I'm assuming here you are using the latest universal release of FCP.
As far as I know there are no or few universal plugins. And more importantly I know of no "free" universal plugins.

  • Planning & HFM Certifications - Advice Appreciated

Hello All – For those on the board that are certified Hyperion professionals (Planning and HFM). I’d really appreciate your input as to the value of these certifications both from the perspective of
    1) Getting onto projects
    2) Being able to perform on the project. Does studying for and completing the certification provide you with the skills to be successful on projects.
I’ve currently been using Planning since 3.0 but don’t have the certification. My knowledge is functional - not a developer.
I’m also looking at getting the HFM certification as well but have never used this tool so I’m wondering if it’s worth getting since I’d like to get onto these types of project.
I do have an accounting background and understand consolidation etc.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Hi,
I will agree with that point only in 50%.
You are talking about 3 different situations:
    1. When You are a technical administrator
    2. When You are a business administrator or a Planning/HFM user
    3. The most important: when You are a consultant
You can use planning or HFM for 5 years and have no knowledge about the system.
I see that kind of situation when I go to customers (accontants, managers and so on) and they have no idea how exactly system is working. In example what is the difference between Contribution Total and Parent Total. How to put data correctly. How to set correct POV.
Study for cert gives You a huge knowlegde and understanding how system is designed.
I'm not saying that it gives You everything. I'm saying that it really helps You to understand the system.
If you have such kind of possibility try to prepare Yourself for cert.
    regards

  • AE crashing on startup, GPU update suspected culprit.  Any advice appreciated.

So yesterday, after 8 weeks of waiting on my order, I finally welcomed the arrival of my new MacPro.  Only 12 GB of RAM (I didn't want to spend megabucks on Apple memory since the computer was already setting me back), 6-core Intel, AMD FirePro D700 GPU, running OSX 10.9.2.
I'm a Creative Cloud member, so one of my first orders of business was downloading After Effects and making sure it was updated.
    So far, so good.
However, my System Preferences told me I needed to update my NVIDIA "CUDA" driver.  That should have been my first red light--why would I need an NVIDIA driver update for an AMD graphics card?  But being overly eager to update everything, I pulled the trigger and downloaded the updated driver.  I blame the fact that I'm more of an artist and less of a tech guy.
Now, After Effects crashes instantly upon launch, with the following error:
Right now, all I want is to be able to use After Effects ... but I'll also say that I'm pretty disappointed that this new, flashy computer may not be able to take advantage of the OpenGL capabilites of CS6 because of the brand of the GPU.
Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

    thevisualedge1 wrote:

First of all, you are working with CC (version 12 of After Effects) - not CS6 (which was version 11).
Secondly, the only thing you're missing out on by not having an NVIDIA GPU is acceleration of the 3d ray-tracing renderer. That's it. And, since CC comes with a free (LIte) version of Cinema 4D, you have a superior option for creating 3d objects anyway. More info about the GPU in AE here. So don't worry about not having an NVIDIA GPU for After Effects. (Although, if you were really planning to use the 3d ray-tracing renderer a lot, I would have assumed you would at least have looked at the tech specs of After Effects before you made a big purchase.)
Anyway, to solve your problems, you will proably need to get rid of the CUDA driver that was installed. Luckily, since it's a new machine you haven't done much with it yet, if you're having trouble with that, you can wipe it and start over.

  • OSP (Occupational Sick Pay) Advice Appreciated

    Hi there,
I am setting up OSP and need to implement a dependency on both length of service and grade.
I have used the absence setup to create the plan and was expecting it to be a matter of updating the generated fast formula to look at different table values (which would be setup to reflect both grade and length of service.) As most of the logic is implement in PL/SQL I feel this may not be the way to go.
Has anyone implemented such OSP logic. The alternative is I set up 5 different plans to reflect the different groups of grades and have an appropriate eligibility profile for each plan.
I would really appreciate some advice on a recommended way forward with this
    Many Thanks
    Kev

    Hi there,
Thanks so much for your response.
The problem I am having is that employees on one group of grades is entitled to six months at full pay and then six months at half pay whereas other grades are entitled to Nine months at full pay and then no further pay.
I am unsure whether I need to set up different absence plans using the absence creation template to implement this or if I can take one plan and change the logic to check for the grade and from it derive the band A and band B entitlements.
Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks

  • Problem with Infinity - Any help / advice apprecia...

    Hi all,
Have had Infinity for around a month now and it was absolutely mega until about a week ago when it completely stopped working and the DSL light began flashing on the Openreach Modem.  I called support and they arranged for an engineer to call two days later.  After testing my installation he decided that the Openreach Modem was faulty and so replaced it like for like.
My problem is that before it broke I was averaging 37 Mbps and since it was repaired the best that I have been able to get is 27 Mbps, a drop of 10 Mbps.  Why has this happened and is there anything I can do to restore my original speed?  Any advice or help offered will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

  • Trying to decide on a T-series - advice appreciated!

I'm going into my second year of college and would like to buy a laptop that's sleeker and lighter for taking to computer science classes, engineering clubs, and the like. My current Inspiron 9300 semi-gaming machine is 9 pounds - even if it is the only thing in my laptop back it is painful. Time for a change.
    Needs:
How light? Well, my brother's 15 inch macbook pro is, according to research, 5.6 pounds (seems a little heavy by my estimation, but I did not have a chance to weight it myself). Something no heavier or (preferable) lighter is what I would like. Another important factor is battery life. I do not need any extraordinary capabilities, and I have heard the lenovo charger is pretty small (correct?) but still, something I can run on decent lighting and with wi-fi on for a few (2.5-ish) hours would be great. As far as performance goes, my current 1.73 ghz process + 1gb DDR2 RAM has sufficed for all of my needs so far. I'll definitely put it up to at least 2.1 ghz and 2gb RAM for a little speed boost, but I'm not worried on this front. Howevery, my nVidia 6800 GO (256mbDDR vRam) will definitely be getting downgraded in this deal, so I'm worried I might see reduced performance in photoshop and basic computer aided design programs. Something that can handle pretty basic to moderate media apps would be good.
With that in mind, I'm looking at a T-Series right now (other recommendations appreciated though). My main toss ups are between the 14.1 "and 15.4" screens and 4 vs. 6 cell battery. My initial want would be a 15.4 + 4 cell battery as I like a decent screen size for watching the occasional movie (and I don't want too much of a shock coming down from my 17" ) and am not a fan of things protruding from my laptop, but I cannot seem to find numbers on the weight and battery life of the different screen size/battery size options. Help on this front would be greatly appreciated. Also any helpful advice on the nVidia vs. integrated intel graphics card, thoughts on a good processor speed, etc., would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your time.
Message Edited by AegisXLII on 06-01-2008 03:41 PM

I'll tell you waht I know.  Firstly, if you want at least 2.5 hours battery, go with the 6 cell battery instead of the 4.  It will not poke out the back if you get a 15.4" screen.  I think it does with the 14.1" screen though.
Weight:  My T61 I bought with a 15.4" screen is pretty good.  I wouldn't mind carrying this around all day if need be, and I will be attending University in the fall.  I haven't weighed it yet, but I would put it somewhere between 4.5lbs and 5.5lbs.  If you go for the 14" screen, that will take off a little weight.
Battery Life:  I haven't actually ran off battery yet for an extended period of time, but I did some file copying over my home network for an hour and 20 mins and battery life was still at 60%, so from the looks of things, my 6 cell battery is capable of lasting about 3 or more hours.
Charger:  The charger is fairly small, but there are 2 varieties.  They send a 65W charger, if you opt for the integrated graphics or a 90 W Charger for the discrete NVidia card.  I have the latter
Processor:  I believe they start at Core 2 DuoT8100, 2.1 GHz, 3MB L2Cache.  The bigger your Cache size, the faster it will be.  I got the T9300 processor, with 2.5GHz, 6MB L2Cache, and I haven't even been able to use over 70% of my processor speed at once yet.  (I'm sure that might change once I start using more demanding programs, but for $100, the upgrade is definetally worth it)
RAM:  With Vista, 1GB is the Minnimum, 2GB is really whats needed for things to run smoothly.  I got 3GB, so I'd have some extra should the need arise, because I do like running a bunch of apps at the same time.
Video Card:  You have 3 options here.  the lowest, is integrated graphics.  It will "steal" memory off your RAM, and be a little slower than a dedicated graphic chip, but the tradeoff is better battery life.  the Middle option, is the NVidia Quadro NVS140 card, with 128MB Dedicated Graphics memory.  This is what I have, and it runs everything I need it for smoothly.  The higher option is only available on the T61p, and that is a 256MB NVidia card.
Screen Size:  I have 15.4", ad I like it.  It has good size, and if you get the WSXGA+ TFT screen(which I have), you can get better resolution (not a great idea though if you have bad eyesight) The 14.1" screen, will be smaller, and slightly lighter, and give you slightly better battery life.  However, with the 14", a 6 cell battery sticks out of the back, wheras with a 15", the 6 cell battery is flush.  If you get a 15" laptop, a 4 cell is not an option.
    As for recomendations:
Processor.  Entry level T8100 (2.1 GHz 3MB L2Cache) is a decent option, but for a mere $112, you can upgrade to a T9300 (2.5GHz, 6MBL2 Cache)  Keep in mind a larger Cache will provide much better speed. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend the T9300.  For an extra $200 on top of that, you can nupgrade to the T9500, but that is only 2.6GHz 6MB L2, so I don't think it is really worth that kind of money
OS:  Get Vista Business or Vista Ultimate, and they will send you fully licensed XP Downgrade CD's.
RAM:  get 3 GB if money allows for it.  2GB is almost necesary to run Vista smoothly, 3GB will give you the freedom to not have to worry.
Hard drive:  You mentioned you will be working with photoshop and media editing tools.  I would get the largest HD you can (currently 200GB)  and the fastest possible (7200 RPM)
Graphics:  You can most certainly get by with integrated graphics, but the NVIdia card will give you a little more power, plus free up some of your RAM
