Advice: Buying a new x131e or second hand x220?

As the title says;
I can buy a second hand x220 or a new x131e for roughly the same price.
The x220 is in good condition.
After purchase I would upgrade either one with ssd (thinking crucial mx100) and plug in some extra ram.
The x220 has a Core i5 2520m. Not sure if it has the ips display.
The x131e has a i3 3227u.
Of course warranty is something to consider (I get 6 months on the x220).
Also the x220 has the faster CPU (correct?) and probably a better and larger screen.
Anyone experience with both?
Some points to consider?

Thanks for all the tips and advice and sorry for the slow reply from my side.
But I have found a new, sealed x230 for a very nice price.
Hope to receive it this weekend.
WWill let you know my experience.
Thanks again.

while you are with the person selling it to you, ask if you can do a complete restore of the software settings->general->reset->reset all
reboot the phone to factory settings and see if that fixes the problem.  if not, i wouldn't buy it unless they are selling it to you for less than $50.  wifi is crucial for keeping data low and using features like facetime

  • Advice buying a new macbook 15

HI, Unfortunately I have broken my current MacBook Pro 2011 after spilling beer on it.  Now I am having extreme trouble deciding on which MacBook Pro 15 to get.  I am on a budge of £1100 to 1300 max, i am looking for a refurbed model.  I will be using it mainly for MUSC producing on logic 9, but a bit of video editing and graphics.
I really need it future proofed and my last 2 machines have had 16GB of ram and I don't think I would consider 8gb just I have more piece of mind with large memory kits.  The machine must have at least i7 .  I am not to bothered about top of the line graphics and retina displays mainly just all around performance .
what model would u recommend , It would be nice if I could upgrade it but also the haswell machines are nice and would only consider one if I get 16gb of ram as it needs to last 5 years at least.  Would need a minimum 200GB storage.  SSD is priority unless the machine can be upgraded.
I guess what i am asking is it possible to get a model that has this for my requirements On the apple refurbished store?Like will one pop up, in this price range with my specs?
CAn be 2012 or 2013, thanks.
    not really bothered
about top of the line graphics and retina displays mainly just all around performance . Would like an i7 processor    Also.
sorry if this comes out wonky I am on a iPhone lol,, thanks.

You are probably looking at a 512GB SSD, and based on the prices of the current Retina models in Apple's UK refurbished store I would say if one did come up with appropriate specs it would not be in that price range
If you are willing to purchase from a third party retailer you will have a good chance of finding something. There are often deals on Amazon - I saw a new 2012 model on sale for £1.3k instead of £1.6k

i have zero out all data on my imac, as i brought it second hand and the disk the guy supplied dont seem capatable with my imac to install the operating system again so it is frozen at the grey start up screen. should i buy a new snow leopard disc from apple and install that as my new operating system. please help as had the computer a month now and still cant use it yet.

You can call AppleCare and request a replacement set of the original DVD's that shipped with the computer for a nominal charge. You will need the serial number (look on the bottom of the stand) and a credit card. Click the AppleCare Contact Info link. Without knowing which iMac you have it's very difficult to say if a new SL disc would work or not.

  • I have bought an iMAC second hand but when updates to purchased (not by me) Apps I cannot download the updates as it is asking for the original owners password. How can I amend this or could I delete the Apps and download new ones in place under my email

If the machine was upgraded to Lion 10.7.x by the original owner then you bought an illegal license of Lion and also of any other applications that the seller  said came pre-installed, this assumes the seller did not include original install media. In that case you need to contact the seller for the original install DVDs that came with the machine re-install up to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and then purchase Mountain Lion ($20) and the applications you want or need. If the seller cannot come up with the original install discs then you can buy them from a nominal cost from AppleCare..

  • Second hand Core Duo or new Core Duo 2?

Ok, I am really in doubt at this moment. I can buy a second hand Macbook 1.83 Core Duo with 2 Gb mem. for EUR 950 which seems like a good deal to me, but... should it be a better choice to go for the second generation Core Duo processors of the current Mac Books considering the upcoming OS? Or is speed more about internal mem than CPU? Can anyone figure this one out for me?

We really can't answer this one for you - it really comes down to personal preference and what you are planning to use the laptop for. Check out the technical differences between the two and think about whether or not the differences are really important to you. There are three big differences, off the top of my head:
    - Core duo is 32-bit, while Core 2 duo is 64-bit.
    - Core 2 duo ships with an 802.11n capable wireless chipset
    - Battery life seems a bit longer with Core 2 duo, and it tends to run a bit cooler.
There are quite a few more minor differences between the two (and several not-so-minor ones that I'm forgetting about, I'm sure). If your price for the core duo is significantly lower than the newer core 2 duo, and if the differences between them don't really matter to you, then I see no reason not to go with the cheaper laptop.

  • Buying a second hand mac pro or iMac?

After a fan failure (leaving the HD the only part that hasn't been replaced), I do worry about my 2009 Macbook Pro's longeivity and if it's worth picking up another machine for audio work or not. My concern is if I end up doing something like putting an SSD in my Macbook Pro and then the logic board fails or something, it's just wasted money.
Can't really go for a new machine, as I cant afford it, still use Logic 8, still use OSX 10.6.8 and have invested in a decent Firewire interface, so I'll need an older machine and was thinking a desktop would be more beneficial and then I can just use my MBP for other things and run it into the ground.
Options are either a 2009 Mac Pro or a 2011 iMac. This will be solely for home studio purposes, where I run average sized projects (20 tracks minimum) and do some multitrack recording etc. My laptop has 8GB RAM, 2.53gHZ processor and can generally hold on OK (occasional system overloads with CPU intensive plug-ins) so I won't need once that's fully decked out but something that will hopefully keep me going for a few more years.
Obviously my main concerns when buying an older computer is how long they last, so I'd be interested to hear from people about their experience with buying second hand computers of a similar age/spec. The iMacs tend to run slightly cheaper, but are running a similar spec to my current laptop (obviously the processor in the iMacs is a quad core) but the Mac Pros allow a lot more flexibility in upgrading.
I'm definitely a 'run things into the ground' kind of guy and am still very happy using an old version of Logic etc so upgrading that kind of stuff isn't something I'm particularly interested in doing unless it's a last resort. Understandably, I don't want to shell out for a 2009 Mac Pro which could have everything fail on me a year down the line, but I don't feel the need to have the most current spec computer.

    2009 MacBook Pro:
putting an SSD in my Macbook Pro and then the logic board fails or something, it's just wasted money.
In the 2009 MacBook Pro model, SSD is installed as a 2.5" drive with a standard SATA interface in a little metal can. It is not a "throw away". That drive that can be adapted to a sled in a Mac Pro 42 lb silver tower, or placed in an external enclosure for use with any Mac. (Macs can boot from any specified drive, internal or external.)
SSD uses less power, and is completely silent, and fast. Did I mention that practically all of them are fast?
The Mac Pro (42 lb silver tower) can continue to be upgraded slightly and will keep working as long as you are willing to keep it in good repair. It is more compelling if you need Large memory, add-on cards, or multiple-processor speed. 2009 model Mac Pro 4,1 and later are superior. Do not pay money for a model older than the 2009 model.
In my opinion, the iMac, with its more limited upgrade possibilities has the same problem as buying an acoustic piano for your home. ¿In a few years, will I own a really awful mechanism inside a great piece of furniture [great display]?

Become familiar with how it works. Then try out some of the features. Examine it for damage or dents. Is it still under warranty?

  • Can I buy Leopard retail second hand?

I lost my Mac OS X Retail Leopard install disc that I bought years ago. My friend is willing to sell me his Retail Leopard install disc however I thought I'd check with you to see if this is okay. He no longer uses Leopard as he sold his old iMac and now uses Mavericks on his new MacBook Pro.
So my question is this: Can I buy his second hand retail Leopard installation disc and safely install it on the G5 that I just picked up second hand? Or do I need find the retail version brand new on amazon or ebay etc.?
I'm asking this because with Microsoft Windows you need to buy it brand new because the serial only works with one machine. Which makes it very hard finding Windows XP retail version brand new and installing it legally.

You need to make sure you know what a retail disk is.
The normal distinction is that retail disks are black and model specific disks are grey but there are exceptions.
You also need to make sure you have an optical drive which can read the media.
My Leopard DVDs are 9.5 GB double layer and not all optical drives can read these.
OS X 10.5 does not require a serial number to install.
OS X 10.5 Server does require a serial number to install.
As far as I am aware neither will stop working if they have been used for multiple installs (legal or otherwise).

  • Please help me with buying a second hand PC for CS5 (i7-920)

    Hi,
I hope someone can help me?
I'm new to the forum. I hope I posted to the correct forum.
I need help on the following.
I cannot presently afford to buy or build a brand new system. I can get the following second hand PC at a very good price.
    Intel Core i7-920 2.67GZ
    GA-EX58-UD3R
    6GB Memory
Asus GTS 450 Nvidia GFX card
    2 x 1.5TB
    2 X 250GB
    1 X 320GB
    Windows 7 Home Premium
As an absolute beginner with Adobe, will the above specs be good enough to run Adobe CS5 Master Collection until I can afford to buy a better PC?

Thank you. I looked at it but not carefully. I will go look at it now CAREFULLY.
    Have a nice evening.
Thanks for your help. I'm off to buy this PC tomorow.

  • Buying a second hand 5D Mark III

Hi all, I'm considering to buy a second hand 5D Mark III camera. Do you have some suggestions on what I should pay attention to ?
    thanks

    1) shutter count
    2) age
    3) repair histroy
    4) physical presentation and functionality.
if you're purchasing it from a third party, things to consider:
is it coming out of a cardboard box lying next to some jumper cables and a piece of an engine block next to a gas can being delivered in the bed of a pickup that's more rust than metal?
consider your source for the item.  are they an established photographer? why are they selling it?
is the price much lower than the cost of a new one?  usually with a camera like the 5d3 even a slightly older one but one that has been loved dearly, will sell for nearing on the original mrsp.
ask if you can take both a cf and an sd card to mee the person and take a few photos in various lighting situations, and see if you notice any crazy abberations in your photography before purchse.
these are all things i'd keep in the back of my mind if i were pressed to buy another 5d3 and from a second hand source.
not too many people just JUMP into the purchase of a 5d3 so they most likely will take good care of it, but you can never tell if it was the one that fell off the dock while crabbing and had to be neetted up...  on the good side, eventhough you 'd end up paying a bit, Canon does have a great repair service.  So, if you do get offered one rather cheap with a few dings and scratches, a high shutter count, and that little rattle that doenst seem to come from anywhere in particular but you always seem to hear it... if it's not still warranteed, then just ship it off pay some money, and get one back that's probably as good as paying for one outright at your local dealer.
i hope these ramblings serve to help.
    -j
Be proud of your work and you will always find someone who appreciates it more than you do.

  • How to make sure mac is clean from "find my mac" before buying second hand?

    Hello.
I plan to buy a mac second hand.
The original owner say he removed it from icloud's and wiped it.
So from what I understand, it should be completely disconnected from his apple id, from the internal firmware safety locks, and he will not be able to accidentally (or not) to lock or remote wipe it, ever. Is this correct?
I would like to know if there is a way to confirm this.
If I enter the mac, do a new wipe and reinstall just to make sure, insert my own iCloud and apple id, and turn on the "find my mac", and I won't get a message that the mac is already in someone else's list, this means that the mac is safe and isn't on anyone's list like a father, son, daughter who accidentally linked it or something.
I know the seller is the original owner. I just want to make sure the iCloud and apple id are no longer linked to the computer. Just on the safe side.
I just don't want any issues along the way in 2-3 years from now.
    Thanks.

You need to be able to see that Find My Mac is turned off. That is all you need to ensure.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When you got it, you needed to perform a security wipe and use your own BlackberryID in the setup, which will then allow you to have basically new Playbook, with your own BBID.

Then you can use BlackBerry World with your BBID and payment method.

  • How do I replace someone else's Mac ID with my own? Bought iPhone second hand. Previous owner re-set the phone but his ICloud account stayed on now my phone. He uses his macID on his new iPhone now?? Any ideas, as this issue is blocking my access to iTune

How do I replace someone else's Mac ID with my own?
Bought iPhone second hand on TradeMe.
Previous owner re-set the phone but his ICloud account stayed on now my phone. He uses his AppleID on his new iPhone now and, understandably, does not want to give me his password. Any ideas?? Please.
This issue is blocking my access to iTunes and any other file from my home computer. It keeps on telling me that I have to autorise my computer to pass on files, yet, it seems, for all this to happen, I need to get logged in through the phone's Apple ID. This of course is different to my one on my computer - and I have no password for it.
This phone is not stolen!! I payed still a fair bit for it. Am still in contact with the previous owner. He doesn't know how to fix the problem either.
    Would appreciate any suggestion ????
    Thanks

    Settings>general>resets>erase all content and settings.
That will put it back to its out of the box state. Set it up with your own apple Id.
