Advice: Desktop card that's compatible with Airport Extreme

I'm looking for some advice on what wireless card I should buy for an old desktop to connect it to my existing Airport setup. I've heard of compatibility issues with some cards so I thought I would present this question to someone with experience before I went out and bought one. The computer is not fast, so I'm not looking for a fast/expensive wireless card, just something that will work. b/g/n, it doesn't matter. The cheaper the better. Thanks in advance.

Hi again, Jim. It belatedly occurs to me to ask whether you checked System Profiler when your SIIG USB2 adapter was in place to see whether the adapter, or indeed the PC Card slot itself, was detected.
I ask because it's a relatively common occurrence in Tibooks, especially Tibooks that are handled and transported a lot (which causes flexing of the not-very-rigid chassis and logic board), for the connection between the PC card slot or cage and the logic board to work loose over time, leaving the card slot, any card in it, and anything that is connected to that card undetected. When this happens, the remedy is extremely simple: release your keyboard latches and gently flip the keyboard over onto the wrist rests, being careful not to jerk the keyboard ribbon cable. Beneath the normal positions of the X and D keys is a rectangular translucent plastic tab about 3/8" x 1-1/8". Using two fingertips, press down hard on that tab, which is the connector between the card cage and the logic board. If you hear or feel even the smallest shift or click, the connection was loose and is now properly seated. Return the keyboard to its place, insert the SIIG adapter if you still have it, supply it with power from its AC adapter or the auxiliary UB cable, connect your iPod, and test again.
If this works, test further to see whether or not you need the auxiliary power supply when using the iPod. You may not; I don't know.

If it was previously working then try a smc and pram reset.
If that doesn't fix it then see if vlc can handle the video.

  • I cannot open iMovie - it says I need a "Graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme" I know this is wrong- Have iMovie version 9.0.4, regularly use it and have not had this problem before

Details: On my MacBook Pro, I have MacOS X 10.6.8, a 2.26 GHz IntelCore Duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DOR 3 Memory.
I have iMovie Version 9.0.4, which I apparently updated inJuly.  I regularly used iMovie, and last used it about 3 weeks ago.  However, Today, when I try to get into iMovie, I get thefollowing message:
“Quartz extreme Required  iMovie requires agraphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme.  One or more of your graphics cards does ntosupport Quartz Extreme.”
So, I cannot get into my iMovie.  I know the “Quartz Extreme” message ismistaken.  WHAT DO I DO?

I would recommend that you turn off and restart your Mac. That should clear it up.

  • I'm looking for a list of printers compatible with Airport Extreme

My existing HP printer is not compatible with Airport Extreme and I want to be able to print from all of my Apple devices. I'm looking for a new photo quality printer / scanner / copier which will work wirelessly with all my devices.

Sorry, but there is no "official" list of printers that Apple provides that indicate which are fully functional with the AirPorts. One "unofficial" list has been maintained by iFelix and may be worth taking a look at.

    Macbook Pro 15" 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Powerbook G-4 Titanium

magicnme, Welcome to the discussion area!
Question - will the new Pro with the Airport Extreme card be compatible with the old base station?
Yes, the MacBook Pro can connect to a 802.11b base station like the Dual Ethernet (aka snow) AirPort base station (ABS).
If it will, what would be the advantages of upgrading to a new Extreme Basestation?
The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) offers a USB printer port for wireless printing.
The AEBS offers WPA and WPA2 wireless encryption.
Also if you have other computers on your local network, large file transfers between your computers will be faster.

  • Airport card does not work with Airport Extreme when security is turned on

I have an iMac running OSX 10.4.11 with an Airport card installed (firmware version 9.52).
I recently replaced my Netgear wireless router with an Apple Extreme Base station and now I am not able to connect my iMac to the wireless network when WEP security is turned on - I get an error from the Airport Setup Assistant when I attempt to connect to the wireless network.
It works fine if the wireless security on the Extreme Base station is turned off.
Please help and thanks in advance.
    Motasim

First, I highly recommend that you switch to either WPA or WPA2 as WEP is no longer considered secure. If you must use WEP, I suggest that you try the following:
o Re-create the Network Name (SSID) on your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS)
o Try using 128-bit WEP, with a 26-Hex character key for the encryption type.

  • Linksys WTR54GS compatible with Airport Extreme WDS?

I know the WTR54GS has WDS capability. Will it's WDS work with Apple's Airport Extreme or Airport Express though?
    Thanks!

    According to this article's
    Author...yes.
Thank you. But I'm referring to the WTR54GS and not the WRT54GS. Notice the transposed R and T. Yeah, I know...very confusing! Why did Linksys do that?
The WTR54GS (which is what I'm looking at) is a compact travel router.
The WRT54GS is a regular router.

  • Is a D-Link 300T ADSL modem compatible with Airport Extreme?

I have tried to upgrade my existing Broadband (Ethernet) connection to WiFi and cannot get it to work. I have plugged the Extreme into the Ethernet port in the modem and gone through Airport Setup Assistant and it does not seem to work. I am using DHCP which seems to be capturing the IP address the service provider (Demon) gave me. Am I doing something wrong or is the modem incompatible? I have the latest Airport software upgrade 2005-001.
    HELP

I have the same modem and it works fine with the AEBS
as long as you DON'T have the latest firmware update
(5.6)! Follow the various posts on these boards on
"updating" the firmware back to 5.5.1 and you should
    - I hope - be OK.
Thanks very much for this. Am now away from the location in question, but will try your suggestion on my return.

  • What iMacs are compatible with Airport Extreme 802.11g?

I am switching my question from the PPC iMac forum to here, hoping I can find the answers.  I am trying to figure out which used 20" iMac will work for me, and a key element is that I need to limit the wireless to the 802.11g spec.
    (1) do all Intel-based iMacs have built-in wireless, and
    (2) when did they go to the "n" spec (which I do NOT want!), and
    (3) whether it is possible to disable built-in wireless in an iMac and add a card to substitute the "g" spec. (I doubt that is possible, but I'm sure somebody here knows the answer.)
    thank you!

    Yes
802.11n first appeared in late 2006 model iMacs.
Yes, you could use a USB dongle instead if you so choose, but why? You could just as easily limit this capability in your router.

  • Leap and Radius! Other brand cards that are compatible

Our network guys are fixing to build a wireless network with the Cisco Leap and a Radius server for authenticity. I need to know if Cisco is going to make a wireless card for the Compact Flash slot. I have some Tablets and PDA's I would like to use but the don't have PCMCIA slots. If not are there other companys that have wireless cards that are compatible with this authenticity. I am currently working with Symbol Technologies. They say their card will work with this authenticity. The only authenticity I see in the settings on this card is for Kerbos. Does Kerbos work with a Radius server? If not can they build a Kerbos server to be a second way of authenticating the user on the wireless network?

When symbol says their CF card will work within the LEAP architecture, they likely mean using MAC authentication. While it is possible to run LEAP and MAC authentication concurrently, it does significantly weaken the security provided by LEAP alone. It is relatively easy to capture and spoof a MAC address that is valid using simple tools.
Symbol has recently licensed the LEAP architecture from Cisco, but does not yet have any products available supporting this. I have not heard of specific plans for supporting LEAP on their CF product.
Symbol is, however, your best hope for CF/LEAP support. They are partnering with Cisco and, as stated earlier, they have already licensed the LEAP architecture.
Cisco's current product line will not support the Symbol Kerberos security mechanism (at least not in any way I've seen).

  • Is anyone successfully using Netgear WN3000RP with Airport Extreme?

Got a brand new WN3000RP wifi range extender. I went through the installation several times myself and several times with tech support to no avail. Tech support told me to return it for a new one.
Everything is connected and the install process goes smoothly but I ultimately cannot ever use the extended network to connect to the Internet. I can see the range extender's mac address on the router but the two devices don't seem to talk to each other.
I'm just wondering if I'm going to have the same problem with a new one or not and wondering if it's even compatible with Airport Extreme routers.
I'm using Airport Utility version 6.1.
Can someone out there can let me know if they got this device working with their Airport Extreme?
Also, what are my other options to extend my range?

I know this answer is likely too late to help but it may help users in the future. In the situation where you are using a range extender there are a few things you need to confirm to make sure it is going to function properly and also some best practices to make sure your network is running smoothly.
    1. Is the range extender using the router for DHCP? I have found in my experience is that the router should "reserve" a MAC Address and IP for the the Range Extender. Most times it is 192.168.1.2. I would first set up the router to have the range extender have a set IP Address of 192.168.***.2 and add the MAC Address to the list so that the Range Extender has a Static IP Address in the private network.
    2. Initially set the range extender to have an SSID(Wireless Network Name) different than the Router's(Airport) SSID. This will allow you to determine if the Extender is functioning normally without it interfering with your existing network.
    3. At this point it is important to set the Range Extender DHCP. What this will do is let the range extender request IP Addresses, DNS(Domain Name Servers), and UPNP Requests. This is where I feel that a lot of people are having issues and assume that the router will still resolve DHCP. If the SSID and Wireless Channel are the same your network will work intermittently with internet access until it is configured correctly.
    4. For Devices that will stay on your network such as NAS(Network Storage), Smart TVs, Apple TVs I would recommend setting Static Private IP Addresses for each of them. Such as 192.168.1.3(NAS), 192.168.1.4(Apple TV), 192.168.5(Smart TV). Also if you enter the MAC Address for each device when you set this up it would be recommended.
    5. If devices are having issues connecting to internet or certain web services are having issues. It may be necessary to set the Extender(Which is now handling DHCP with IP, DNS, and UPNP passed through from the router) as the Gateway for which device may be having issues. For instance if the Apple TV is having issues communicating on the network(Air Play, Sharing, Streaming) set or configure the network settings manually on the Apple TV. The IP Address would be the one your reserved on your router. The Subnet Mask would likely be 255.255.255.0 by default unless you have changed the amount of potential "Hosts" on your network. The Gateway would be the IP Address of the Extender(Which is paired with your router). DNS servers should be handled automatically. In some situations with certain devices you may need to use a DNS Service for Streaming, but this generally isn't needed.
    A Visual Representation would be
ISP>Modem if needed>Router(DHCP Enabled and MAC Addresses Reserved)>Localized Devices<Range Extender(DHCP Enabled and Static IP Address 192.168.***.***)<Apple TV(Manually Configured IP Settings and Range Extender set as Gateway)<Other Devices Localized to Range Extender but not in range of Router(AirPort).
In this representation you should be able to have the router and range extender broadcast Identical SSID and Channels(Radio Frequency). This also allows for advanced settings to be put in place such as LAN networks or Subnets.
An issue that may come up is communicating with the range extender or router while setting up the network. A simple workaround that will allow you to configure either if the network doesn't let you connect on a MacBook is to go to System Preferences>Network>Wifi or Ethernet>Advanced>TCP/IP in configure IPv4>Set Using DHCP with Manual Address> Then IP Address that corresponds with your current network 192.168.***.*** but is not the same as the gateway, router, or reserved devices. This will allow you to connect and configure devices even if router or extender is not assigning IP addresses or operating properly.
