Advice for a switch to connect to my Extreme?

I want to buy a switch that will connect to my Airport Extreme N and give me additional ports to connect ethernet cables to. Can anyone give me any things I should look into when buying one? Is there one that works well with the Extreme?
Thanks.

if I have slow internet service is there still an advantage to having the gigabit switch?
It won't help your Internet speed, but any data transfers, copying, backups etc between devices on your local network will go about 10 times faster with Gigabit capability. For an investment of an additional $15-20 or so for a Gigabit switch, that buys you quite a lot of potential performance improvement, and you will be future proofing your network as well.
Which ethernet cable will need to be upgraded? Just the cable going from the wall to the modem to the switch? OR will all cable on the network need to be upgraded?
You would want to use CAT5e or CAT6 cabling if you want to realize the advantages of Gigabit speeds on your network.
The cable from the modem to the router is not as critical, as chances are you do not have a 100 Mbps connection from your Internet service provider. But, if its been 4-5 years since you installed the modem, it couldn't hurt to go ahead and replace that cable as well.
If you don't want to utiltize the advantages of Gigabit speeds on your network, regular CAT5 cabling will work fine. If the runs are not too long, CAT5 cable will usually support Gigabit speeds as well.

  • Setup advice for a *switcher*

I do need advice and I am not sure what is the right post for this. After a less than great experience with Vista and great experience with a Macbook (my son's machine) and iPhone and iPods, we are ready to move to a 100% Mac environment (Thanks to Adobe as they will allow me to transfer all my expensive Adobe products from Windows to Mac). What is the best way to get advice on what to buy? The Genious Bar? I need to buy one iMac (or should I buy a Mac Server??) as the main unit to replace my HP Tower, get my pre-ordered MBA and set up my home network, set up 2 Terabytes of Hard Disk space for my pics (NAS preferred), set up 500GB of NAS device for my music for use with a SONOS system...
I am a writer and a photographer so my main application is Lightroom, a bit of Photoshop CS3, Microsoft Office and tons on Internet usage of course. I also need to manage with website, that is currently hosted by a provider that does not support Apple so I will need to switch to a provider that allows me to edit my web site from Apple platform...
I am not an IT guy but managed to set this up with Windows XP and Vista so I would expect it to be easier with Apple? Should I go to the Mac store? contact a IT Consultant in the Seattle Area? or get the advice somewhere here in the forums?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Lujosalgo,
Welcome in the Mac Community. I will try to help you as much as I can here.
Genius bar is of course a logical choice for you. They seem to be great (unfortunately we don't have those in Europe yet.).
However, a short note on your website designing... You might already know that each new Macs sports the iLife apps and with that iWeb, which is a great piece of software.
With that, you should be able to publish your websites to just about any provider who allows you to publish HTML sites via FTP. (My provider first told me too that they don't support Macs, but here I am: http://www.vaosdesign.com )
Everything made with iWeb. I just needed a little workaround: iWeb can't publish it directly, but with the help of another piece of Software named CyberDuck (just google for it) you can publish directly to the FTP server of your provider.
If you need more help, just drop me a line at [email protected] and I'll be glad to help you out.
I don't have any experience with NAS though... but I work with Apple computers since 1992 so I should be able to help you on the most standard problems.
    Cheers mate,
    Rene

  • Advice for someone switching from PC

I've been an avid PC person for like 15 years, even used to work as a PC tech and consultant.
I am SERIOUSLY considering switching to Mac -- and I adore the 15" PB, it is exactly what I need...
Frankly I despise Windoze XP and cant deal with it, or mismatched hardware etc, any longer!
and... OSX is simply astonishing. I cant wait to run it.
...but I have a few questions before I drop the $$$ and make this major life switchover!!
    1.) Expensive software
2.) The serious issue of the lower memory slot/logic board burning out on the 15" PB's (should I go 12" or 17", which I dont want to?) Perhaps the newest revision will solve this.
3.) Needing to drop a bunch of money for Apple Care -- I've never had to do this with the 7 PC's I've owned. (granted most laptops dont make it to 3 years) But over $100 a year for an extended warranty is kind of insane, but by reading these forums, it seems the PB's are prone to many issues and looks as if AC is needed.
I am in a quandry here? Thoughts? I really really want to make this switch to Mac, but this is more than just a computer switch, it is a life switch for me!
    Thanks!

I was in the same position you are in now. I am the VP of IT for my large company and have been a windows girl from the start. I'd dabbled in Unix/Linux but with the job it just didn't afford me the time.
I am now the proud owner of a new G4 Powerbook. I have the upgraded Ram for 1gig and 100G Hard drive. I was able to integrate it seamlessly to my network at work and my home office. Other posters were correct about Version tracker. I have Office standard addition and it retails US for $399.95 at the apple store.
Here is a link that I did as a comparison to PC base Office also. You will see that they cost the same.
    http://shop3.outpost.com/search?searchtype=regular&sqxts=1&querystring=office&cat=12068&submit.x=13&submit.y=12
As for the Apple Care, all it will take is once of your computer whether it be a laptop or a desktop for you to be willing to turn out the extra money. I myself have not had any problems with the logic board but my PB is still fairly new being only 3 months old.
Since I have owned my Powerbook I find it very hard to open a Pc.
    Hope this helped.

iphone only shows logo for 13 seconds when connected to pc thats all it does however i connected to wall socket, it goes up to connect to itunes but when i unplug it then it switches off.
this is coincidently after an ios update for iphone which i did just approx two days earlier which was suppused to fix battery issues?
also battery shows 100 percent full but as i explained if disconected from socket it switches off altogether.

Hopefully and most likely faulty battery. If you have Warranty or AppleCare, make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution.

  • SG 300-28 28-Port Gigabit Managed Switch -Lan connectivity issues

    Hello,
Our office lan running on 2 * SG 300-28 28-Port Gigabit Managed Switch.
    PID VID:SRW2024-K9 V01
    Firmware Version (Active Image):1.0.0.27
The users are seeing there connection to fileservers(mapped network drives) slowing down over the period.
We have to re-boot the offending switch to get the normal traffic back.
I have raised a ticket with cisco small business people and they said to upgrade the firmware to latest version.
But I am wondering why I need to upgrade this switch as the other switch which also brought at the same time with the same spec have no such issues.
Even if I decided to upgrade the firmware, they have recommended that I need to reset the switch to factory settings and try to put the previous configuration manually which is a worry for me.
I have logged on to the web console and I have found out, I can use TFTP or HTTP to backup the config, how do I use those services and what parameters i need to pass those to work, does using that functionality can rollback the switch to previous running configuration?
PS: Both the switch have connected together using a FC trunk with link aggregation eanbled. So how do I get all those settings back if I upgrade/rollback?
I just have to come up with some solution as it is affecting the business, so any help would be much appreciated.
Please see the attachment and let me know if any other info needed?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
Please see the difference between the connected switches configuration.
Maybe the vlan 10 and 30 has been created wrongly.
Please see the config for both the switches and give me some advice/suggestions.
    I really appreciate that.

  • One solution for Apple TV losing connection to its iTunes Library

In 2012 I bought an Apple TV3 to let me use the AirPlay features of my New iPad with my HD TV. All worked fine and still does. Later in 2012 I subscribed to Netflix and enjoyed streaming movies to my HD TV via the Apple TV. Having had such a good experience with it so far I bought another for our bedroom TV and another for a relative, hoping they would have the same great experience with it.
Both of my Apple TV units at my house have worked flawlessly since installing them. We can start watching a Netflix movie downstairs then go upstairs and carry on where the movie left off.
At my relative's house the experience was not so flawless and has resulted in about 2 months of frustration but happily their AppleTV3 is now also working as expected. It has been quite a journey to get to this point and had a surprising solution.
I am the 'go-to' person in my family for these things so I installed the Apple TV for my relative.
My relative has a Windows XP (SP3) PC running the latest iTunes (11.0.2), a BTHomeHub 2 router, connected by WiFi to the Apple TV. The PC was connected by ethernet cable to the router. I installed the Apple TV, set up the hdmi connection to the HD TV, connected it to the WiFi network, upgraded to the latest iTunes on the PC, added the Apple ID for Home Sharing to iTunes and the Apple TV and could connect to the iTunes library on the PC, all good so far. I could play video or music or podcast or view photos from the iTunes library on the PC but after a short time (a few minutes or so), if I tried to play a different video or music track the I would get the familiar spinning icon and the Apple TV would not play the media file. Often the Apple TV would still show the contents of the iTunes library but would not play anything from it. When it was in this state it was still possible to play iTunes Trailers or Purchased content or a Youtube video or display photos from my library. This proved it was still connected to the internet and to some extent my library on the PC because it could display photos.
Initially I thought it was a WiFi problem as that was how the Apple TV was connected to the router. So as I already had a Powerline ethernet link running from the router to the TV for the Humax Freeview box for the BBC iPlayer, I ordered a small network switch to share the Powerline ethernet cable with the Apple TV. However the same drooping connection problems were apparent. I tried changing the QoS settings on the Powerline link, tried to prioritise TCP or UDP or both , but no improvement. I decided to abandon the Powerline link in case it was 'too slow', perhaps that was the issue.
I tried one of the Apple TV units from my house, where they were working fine and I got the same problem, at my relative's house it behaved like their unit, it would connect play a movie (all the way through if we let it) but after a few minutes if trying to play something else it would not play anything further. I tried their Apple TV at my house and it worked there, so the unit was not at fault.
At various times while troubleshooting these problems I have unistalled iTunes, reinstalled it, uninstalled Bonjour, reinstalled it (it comes with iTunes), searched the registry and cleaned it (Warning: do this at your own risk as you risk destabilising Windows), I have tried disabling my firewall on the PC and/or on the router, uninstalled the Antivirus / Firewall software (Norton) on the PC, I have added the Ports required for the Apple TV to my router and firewall software, I have read many, many forum posts about what has worked for other people and I tried them all in various combinations.
I decided having tried the above that the problem must be the Windows PC, so I swapped it for a few days with a laptop, connected wirelessly to the router. I had an iTunes library on the laptop so I shared it with the Apple TV and stopped iTunes running on my relative's PC.  For a few days it actually worked, the Apple TV would play one movie/music track and I could select another and play it after a few minutes, a partial solution had been found except the laptop was needed elsewhere and I wanted the Windows PC to be the source for the iTunes library. I briefly considered suggesting they should buy a modern PC or Mac as their Windows PC was around 9 years old, may be that was the problem? This would have cost around £400+ and was out of the question. Fortunately I had a spare PC and I decided to swap it with the Windows PC, it was only a couple of years old and as such it must be 'better' I thought. Swapping one PC with another and transferring e-mails and documents etc. took quite a few hours but it was done. I uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled it and set up the home sharing again. This second Windows PC was running XP (SP3) and Norton 360 Firewall/Anitvirus software. I checked that after installing iTunes the Program rules in Norton were allowing the TCP and UDP communications expected by the Apple TV, I noted these were not specific ports but all TCP and all UDP communications were allowed. All of this met the recommendations that other posts had suggested. I tried it with the Apple TV but no, exactly the same problem, the iTunes library could not be found after a few minutes.
I found that if I restarted the Apple TV it would connect and play a file (movie/music etc) but if I played an iTunes trailer or just waited a minute or so then it would lose the connection. Another symptom would be when I landed on the 'Compters' icon it would tell me to 'enable home sharing on the PC with this Apple ID' , which I had already done.
If I tried playing via the Apple TV while selecting tracks from within iTunes on the PC, then sometimes the AirPlay icon was present or not present, sometimes worked and would then always not work until I restarted at least iTunes and the Apple TV, if not also the router or PC, whatever I tried it would not result in a connection between the Apple TV and the PC that would survive more than a few moniutes at a time.
Having swapped the Windows PC hosting the iTunes library with another I swapped the Apple TV again with one from my house, again same behaviour. So this suggested the problem was the BTHomeHub router as that was the only bit of hardware not exchanged. I compared its settings with the same unit at my house, I tried forwarding ports, I tried chaging the security from the default 'WPA & WPA2' to WPA or WPA2, still no solution. I tried reducing the default WiFi connection protocol from 802b/g/n to 802/b/g. I tried variations of all the other possible settings that could be changed but in the end set them to match the ones at my house. Still no solution. I considered buying an Airport Extreme or similar to link that via an ethernet cable to the router and enable it to be the WiFi access point for the Apple TV. This would have cost around £80 similar to the cost of the Apple TV itself, so was also dismissed as an idea.
I decided to restore the router to factory settings, this was done and I set up the WiFi connection again to the Apple TV, still no solution, same behaviour on the Apple TV. I decided it must be  a problem with the WiFi so I tried a direct ethernet cable trailed through the house from the router to the Apple TV to eliminate the WiFi involvement, that would have to be the answer, wouldn't it? No, same problem.
I discovered some useful diagnostics along the way that are somewhat techie but worth persevering with as they could be useful for diagnosing what the problem could be. Find out on your router what the IP Address is for your computer that is hosting your iTunes library and the IP Address for your Apple TV. The IP address is essential for either device to connect with each other or the internet. The Apple TV IP address can be seen via Settings/General/Network, it has the form like '192.168.1.69'  and for the PC it was '192.168.1.80', the values don't have a particular significance but the last digits after the 3rd dot will be different for each device.
On the PC (or Mac), open a Command (PC) or Terminal(Mac) prompt and try to 'ping' the Apple TV to see if you get a response
    e.g.
    c:\ping 192.168.1.69
    or
    c:\ping apple-tv
You should get a response indicating the number of milliseconds it takes for the 'ping' to be returned to the PC from the Apple TV , this will show that the PC can connect to the Apple TV, if it does not get a response then you should check that the PC and Apple TV are connected to the same network (either wired or wifi). You must be able to get a successful ping for the connection between the PC and the Apple TV to work at all.
Another diagnostic is to check the network status on the PC (or Mac)
    e.g.
    c:\netstat -an
This will show all the current TCP/UDP connections and also the local and remote IP addresses and ports. Look for the IP address of the Apple TV in the third column, there will be many rows returned so just concentrate on the rows with the IP addressses of the PC and the Apple TV
e.g.  look for rows like the following:
    TCP 192.169.1.80:3689  192.168.1.69:49123 ESTABLISHED
    UDP 192.168.1.80:5353  *.*
    UDP *.123                     *.*
TCP Port 3689 is used by the Apple TV to communicate with iTunes for playing content. This connection is essential, there may be more than one 'established' connection to the remote Apple TV from the local PC.
UDP Port 5353 is used by the Apple Bonjour service to send multicast communications between iTunes and any iOS devices on the same network, such as the Apple TV, again it is essential.
Port 123 is used by Apple products to obtain the date and time, the UDP row above shows that any local IP Address can communicate with any remote IP address on the router's network and provide it with date and time information.
If your firewall software on the PC is blocking any of these ports then the 'netstat' command is useful to see if you need to unblock any. In my experience, this port unblocking was not necessary as when I installed iTunes, the Norton software automatically set up appropriate rules for the iTunes program, and opened the required TCP and UDP communications as iTunes needed.
Likewise, on the router itself, I have the UPnP setting enabled and this allows software like iTunes and Bonjour to traverse the router's firewall without it being necesssary to explicitly set the ports to be forwarded.
If I started the Apple TV, and ran the 'netstat -an' command over the next few minutes I could see the number of rows for the Apple TV diminish, and this was a symptom of the dropping connection problem.
Ultimately having replaced the Apple TV with another 'working' one , swapped the PC, restored the router to factory defaults, disabled the Windows or Norton firewall, tried ethernet and WiFi connection between the router and Apple TV it struck me that the only component I had not  considered was the insignificant ethernet cable linking the PC to the router. This has been present since the router was installed for the original PC around 4 years ago. But surely this was how the original PC and the swapped in PC were getting to the internet quite normally and successfully? Also this was how the Apple TV was accessing the PC via WiFi then via the router through this ethernet cable, there was no way it could be the cable, cables don't allow a connection for a short time and then cause a timeout can they?. Thus, confused, and with all other avenues explored, I removed the cable between the PC and the router and enabled a WiFi connection from the PC to the router. After restarting the PC, Router and Apple TV, just to be sure, I tried the Apple TV again.
I could play some music on the Apple TV from the iTunes library, I could play it for a minute or so and then go to movies and play a movie from the iTunes library. I tried to play an iTunes trailer, some YouTube videos, these worked as usual. I then went back to the library and yes, I could play another music track or another movie. I forced the Apple TV to 'sleep' via Settings/General/Sleep Now and tried again, I woke it up and could play any music or movie from the library. Elated, I went out for meal with the family, nervously hoping throughout the meal that the solution had been found. After a couple of hours we returned, woke up the Apple TV and yes, oh yes!, it would connect with the library and play a succession of music or videos without seeing any dropped connections. Several hours later I could wake up the Apple TV again and select any content from the iTunes library on the PC and play it, finally the unit is behaving as I would expect.
This solution may not apply for all, but it worth following all of the components in the path between the Apple TV, router, computer (either PC or Mac) and the iTunes library and checking that each is able to commmunicate successfully and over a period of time reliably so that the Apple TV can perform as flawlessly as it is capable of.
Don't, as I did expect the solution to involve a complicated series of special settings of ports or communications protocol changes. Do perform a clean install of iTunes and keep it updated, do keep Firewall settings simple and let the settings be default settings, do rely on UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) on the router. Let the router select which channel it wants to use, it will select the channel with least interference...and check out that insignificant ethernet cable if you have one. It might work fine for general communications from the computer to router to the internet but it can be a source of connections dropping on the Apple TV!
My relative is now a happy Apple TV user too.

Useful to watch what is happening to the TCP/UDP connections when the Apple TV is connected to iTunes and when it is actually playing some media from iTunes and when it stops playing.
To see this, use the Network Statistics command 'netstat' from a Command prompt (Windows PC) / Terminal Window (Mac):
    e.g. for Windows:
    c:\netstat -an 5
This repeats the netstat command every 5 seconds, use Ctrl-C to quit the command. (Use 'netstat -h' for help with this command)
While iTunes is running there will be a number of TCP records displayed for the computer's IP address using port 3689, showing at least 3 ports in use for the Apple TV's IP address.
    i.e.
    TCP host_ip:3689 apple_tv_ip:49187 ESTABLISHED
    TCP host_ip:3689 apple_tv_ip:49196 ESTABLISHED
    TCP host_ip:3689 apple_tv_ip:49255 ESTABLISHED
When it is playing content there are more connections established, some of these rows will gradually disappear when the media file stops playing. These addional TCP records show iTunes using different ports from 3689, but only while media files are being played.
When a video file is played, (on this Windows PC at least) the iTunes host is using ports 4463 and 4464, with the Apple TV using port 7000. When playing a music track or podcast, the iTunes host is using port 4472 or 4489 and the Apple TV is using port 5000.
When the media is playing, the fourth column returned by the 'netstat -an 5' command : 'State' shows as 'ESTABLISHED' and shortly after the media file is stopped playing it shows as 'TIME_WAIT' until the record disappears after a minute or so.

  • Multiple libraries, Pbook/Pmac, advice for management & updating please.

    Hi Everyone,
I travel frequently, and am looking for suggestions to keep all my iPhoto libraries up to date. I currently have a g5, Powerbook, and Mini.
I just upgraded to iPhoto 6 and I have several thousand photos on my Dual g5. I just came back with 1000 more from my diving trip. The problem is, they are on my Powerbook, and taking up alot of space on the relatively small hard drive. I managed to work through the rough upgrade from 5 to 6, and now I need some more help...
    1) What is your advice for managing multiple libraries of photos.
    2) What is the best way to transfer the iphoto pics (and movies) to my desktop, which of course has the larger storage capacity, after travelling...
    Thanks,

    Jason:
There are several different approaches to what you want to do. Let me just throw out a couple that I'm familiar with.
To get the new photos from your PB to your G5 and maintain any keywords, and other organization effort you put into them, you'll need the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. It will allow you to merge libraries or copy between libraries and maintain the metadata, etc. That's the only way currently available to move photos from one library to another and keep the roll, keywords, comments, etc. with those photos. You can connect the two Macs with one in the Target Mode, probably your PB, and then run iPLM to move the photos to the G5 library.
Now there is a way to have a library on your PB that reflects the one on your G5 but is only a fraction of the size. That's to have an alias based library on your PB that uses the Originals folder as its source of source files. (My 25,600 files, 27G, are represented by an iPhoto Library folder of only 1.75G). When the PB is not connected with the G5, say with a LAN, it will have limited capabilities which are in part: you'll only be able to view the thumbnail files, be able to add comments, create, delete or move albums around, add keywords (but with some hassle-but it can be done). You can't do anything that requires moving thumbnails around, work with books, slideshows or calendars. Once the two computers are networked together again the library will act as normal.
Now while on the road you can have a "normal" library to import new full sized files, keyword them, add comments, etc. and then transfer to the G5 library. Once in the G5 library they will be represented in a roll(s) and corresponding folder in the Originals folder. You then fire up the "alias" library, and import those new folders in the G5 Originals folder.
It may be a lot of work but it may be one way of doing it.
I've not done any of the "sharing" with iPhoto so don't know if that's another possible candidate for transferring.
P.S. FWIW I've created this workflow for converting from a conventional library to an alias based one.

  • Buying advice for MacMini

I will be buying a new Intel Mac soon and cant work out between iMac, Macbook or Mini and looking for advice.
I am currently using a Mac Power PC tower, 7 years old for design work. It has a top end NVIDIA graphics card installed and maximum RAM used with an expensive Dell 24" Ultra display.
Use is for Photoshop, some video using FCP X, email and web.
Don't need portability it can be the size of a truck
need good performance, I will use plenty extra RAM
I don't understand too much about hardware and trying to decide on what spec I need, specifically the difference between
1-   low cost Intel 4000 or the better NVIDEA graphics card
2-   i5 (low cost) or i7 (expensive) processor
from reading magazines and Apple discussions the consensus appears to be:
    Mac Mini
good reliability, appeals for price and would connect to an existing 24" monitor
unsure about the spec of graphics, the Intel 4000 sounds very poor against the NVIDIA electronics
    iMac
has good spec but is expensive for what it is, appears to be unreliable with numerous screen problems discussed in forums. Unsure about using a computer that is built in to a screen.
    Macbook
don't need portability but has good reliability and good spec but again uses low end Intel graphics except on the most expensive model. There is a bewildering range in choice of spec.
    thanks for reading

Hello, you have it covered pretty well, I'll just add...
    Mac Mini
Not that the HD4000 is that slow, but myriad problems, mostly HDMI output, but several using TB port also. I'd never consider a computer with Intel Graphics.
    iMac
Besides what you mentioned, the 21.5" is not serviceable even to upgrade RAM. Unacceptable in my eyes.
    Macbook
Hmmm, reliability??? Don't they have permanently glued in Batteries that only Apple can Replce, & likely won't even be available 3-5 years from now? Is the Hard drive replaceable?
Both the iMacs & MBs seem like disposable computers to me, but if you can afford to replace them every 3 years I guess that wouldn't matter.
Not that I can afford anything, but If I had to replace my Mac right now, I'd only consider an older used, all be it slower iMac.

  • How do you configure the set of port to use for FTP passive data connection

I was able to start the ftp server xml db and connect to it locally. When I tried to connect to it from home, I was able to log in but when i do a "get" command the sessions hangs. I also tried passive mode and do a "get" command and it gives me a connection refused error. I am using the default port 2100. I think this might be a firewall issue with the data connection port. I am not sure which range of ports to open for the passive ftp connection on the server side or where to go and set them for for the ftp server to use? Or this issue might not be firewall related??? Any thoughts. Thanks.

This is a typical problem with VPN/Firewall software and FTP on ports other than 21.
When you open the FTP data connection the FTP Server identifies which port the data will be sent on using the PORT command which is sent on the command port (typically 21 with a normal FTP server, 2100 by default with XDB). THe client then opens that PORT to accept the data (file, output of an ls etc).
As I understand it most VPN/Firewall are configured to monitor 21 for 'PORT' requests. They then understand to allow connection on the PORT number passed on the command PORT. Hence with Port 21 firewall / VPN software is not a problem. However since the XDB command PORT is something other than 21 they do not see / honour the PORT commands from the server and hence the client cannot open the data connection on the specified PORT
As to how to solve it, I wish I knew (After 5 years I still can't use XDB FTP from home to a machine in the office once the VPN tunnel is open :( ). I'm sure it's going to be firewall / VPN software specific and may need the VPN servers to be configured.
The best bet would be to run the FTP server on 21...
Add the following line to your listener.ora file
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = hostname) (PORT = 21))
    (PROTOCOL_STACK = (PRESENTATION = FTP) (SESSION = RAW)))
and then restart the listener as root
    Start the listener as root.
At the operating system prompt, enter tnslsnr with optional command line arguments. The usage is as follows:
tnslsnr [listener_name] [-user user] [-group group]
    where:
    Table 4-3 tnslsnr Utility Options
    Option Description
    listener_name
Specify the name of the listener. If omitted, the default name LISTENER will be used.
    -user user
Specify the user whose privileges the listener will use when super user (root) privileges are not needed. After performing the privileged operations, the listener will give up root privileges irreversibly.
    -group group
Specify the group whose privileges the listener will use when super user (root) group privileges are not needed. After performing the privileged operations, the listener will give up root group privileges irreversibly.
The listener will temporarily switch to the provided user and group immediately after startup. All subsequent operations will be done with the specified user and group privileges, except the system calls necessary to listen on configured endpoints. The listener will revert to super user (root) for a short period of time to listen on reserved addresses, such as TCP ports less than 1024. After the listener starts listening on all of its endpoints configured in listener.ora, it will switch to the specified user and group irreversibly. Therefore, the listener will give up the root privilege that it initially had. In the current release, -user and -group command line arguments only accept user and group identifiers specified in numeric form.
For example, to execute a root listener called mylsnr and have it use privileges of a user identified

If I have an airport extreme and a time capsule is it possible for seamless switching between the 2 when a signal is weak or drops
Main reason is as I move from my first floor to my attic office and would like to place one (airport extreme)downstairs and time capsule upstairs to get complete coverage

In theory, yes. If you configure the two base station into either an extended or roaming network configuration, you should be able to walk a laptop between routers and the laptop should attempt to connect/reconnect to the base station providing the stronger signal ... but, in reality, this is not always 100% true.

  • ISE 1.1.3 provisioning problem for the first DOT1x connection

    Hello all,
I am wondering how a wired dot1x client can get the NAC agent downloaded for its very first connection from ISE ?
Should the Agent be installed before the first connection ?
I'have set up ISE 1.1.3 for provisioning (files have been downloaded from cisco website) (upgrade mandatory)
I have an AuthZ rule for a correct posture assessment
    and
another AuthZ rule for an unknown posture assessment that triggers a posture remediation (file download)
    (in that order)
NAC agent is properly configured ( FQDN...), the users gets and nothing happen !
    no NAC upgrade
    no NAC assessment.
    Any idea ?
Does it take a while for the new agent to be downloaded ?
    Best regards.
    V.

In order to troubleshoot the NAC agent problem, we need to check  couples of things.like
1.)Ensure that the discovery host address on the Cisco NAC agent or  Mac OS X agent is pointing to the Cisco ISE FQDN. (Right-click on the  NAC agent icon,
choose Properties, and check the discovery host.)
2.) Ensure that the access switch allows Swiss communication between  Cisco ISE and the end client machine. Limited access ACL applied for the  session should allow Swiss ports:
permit tcp any host 80.0.80.2 eq 8905 --> This is for posture
communication between NAC agent and ISE (Swiss ports)
permit udp any host 80.0.80.2 eq 8905 --> This is for posture
communication between NAC agent and ISE (Swiss ports)
    deny ip any any
3.)If the agent login dialog still does not appear, it could be a  certificate issue. Ensure that the certificate that is used for Swiss  communication on the end client is in the Cisco ISE certificate trusted  list.
4.) Ensure that the default gateway is reachable from the client  machine.
As per your confirmation, I am going to close the case for this specific  inquiry. We strive to provide you with excellent service. Please feel  free to reach out to me or any member of the SAC team if we can be of  any further assistance or if you have any other related questions in the  future. We value your input and look forward to serving you moving  forward.

  • Cisco sg 100d unmanaged switch not connecting to network

I have a Cisco sg 100d-08 unmanaged switched that had been working just fine for several months  but now devices attached to the network thru are no longer on the network.  All lights are on indicating the ports are active.  Tried power recycle but no joy. When I replaced the switch with an old Belkin model everything works fine.  Is there anyway to reset this unmanaged switch or do I now just have an expensive paper weight?

When the management interface is part of VLAN x
Make sure that the management interface vlan id is set to 0  (untagged ) If the native vlan on the switch trunk connected to controller is vlan x. If the native vlan is something else make sure to tag the mangement interface vlan with x.
Another interesting thing that might happen with switch having the following command enabled:
    SW(config)#dot1q tag native
In that case all trunk native vlan frames will be tagged , so you have to tag the management vlan on the controller as well in that case.
To be able to troubleshoot such connectivity problem, you should get the output of:
    show run int
    show interface <\\ > switchport
the latter command should be your best friend.
One recommondation, make sure to tag your management / ap-manager interface with vlan id  to maintain QoS limiting based on dot1p values for downstream traffic from the wired side.
In the above scenario , If you can provide the output of show interface <\\> switchport
I should tell you why the recommended action solved your issue based on the above explanation, and if you would like I can maitain the tag for you.

  • How can I switch the connection pool dynamically during on load happens

    HI,
I have two data bases which holds same data. i.e Prod_db, Prod_db1,
I want to switch the connection pool dynamically during load happens
Ex: During load happens i want to hit prod_db1, after load completes i want to hit prod_db. How to achieve this.

create dynamic repository variable for DSN using init block so that value is changes based on your timings and use this in connection pool.
If you use same user and passwords for both the databases that would be easy or else need to follow the same for uid and pwd.
That should work, if not update.
    If helps pls mark correct/helpful

  • [SOLVED] pulsuadio and blutooth auto switch to connected device?

Is there a way to stream audiochannels automatically to a bluetooth speaker when it is connected?
At the moment I have to change manually in pavucontrol Playback section. Otherwise sound is still played via internal speakers..
    Any ideas? Thanks!

    plasma-framework 5.6.0-2
    libbluedevil-frameworks 5.2.0-1
    bluedevil-frameworks 5.2.0-1
    bluez 5.27-1
    bluez-libs 5.27-1
    bluez-utils 5.27-1
    sbc 1.3-1
    pulseaudio 5.0-1
    pulseaudio-alsa 2-3
The bluetooth speaker is a Denon Envaya mini, connected in A2DP mode.
The whole setup is not working realy stable at the moment, sometimes the device is connecting just fine and I see it in pulseaudio, sometimes it doesn't and bluetooth is crashing when trying to connect. Same is true for trying with bluetoothctl, so I guess it's not a plasma problem.. I also tried gut versions for most of the packages (at least for pulseaudio, libbluedevil-frameworks and bluedevil-frameworks).
Anyway. even when connecting is successfull, I still have to set the audiostream manually to the speaker with pavucontrol.
I tried to load pulsaudio module-switch-on-connect in default.pa but didn't see a difference.. I'm guessing this should only autoconnect the speaker when present, but what I'd like to do is to automaticly stream audio to the speaker when connected, not to the internal laptop speaker..

I don't fully understand what the System Reset does but I've found that it cures many ills.  It's easy, quick and harmless:
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.
A System Reset does not remove any apps, music, movies, etc. nor does it cause any settings to revert back to default.
