Advice for cleaning glossy screen?

Hello all,
I was debating between posting this in "Displays" so moderators, feel free to move this if you need to.
I'm asking for any advice on what I could use to clean my laptop glossy display.
I've seen "Laptop wipes" but wanted to see if you all have some feedback on them (or other products).
Thanks much!

Thank you so much for answering.
Since I posted this, I've done a few searches on the forums and found some answers.
I'm nervous about using paper towels because I guess I was told never to use that on my eyeglasses so figured it may have the same negative effect on my glossy screen.
Maybe I'm wrong.
In any case, I appreciate your taking the time to respond.

  • How to clean glossy screen?

    Whats up...
Just wondering if anyone knows how to properly clean the MacBook Pro Glossy Display. I have Iklear but afraid to use it, I dont want to scratch the screen or something...
    Any suggestions?

iklear has a separate product for glossy screens, check out their website.
You may want to take your laptop and submerge it in a bath...... no please don't do that...
The other supported way is to take a microfiber cloth, dampened with water and clean that way. Your instruction manual with the computer should also have detailed instructions on cleaning the display.
Regardless, I would suggest the iKlear products for glossy screens... make sure to click on GLOSSY!!!!

  • What are the different model numbers for the glossy screen and the matte?

I just bought a 2.5 MBP from bestbuy and before I open it up I want to make sure I didn't get the glossy screen. Is there a way to tell from the box? It doesn't say glossy screen on it but I wasn't sure.
I am just switching over from having to use a PC for 15 years back to where I started using macs. What are the benefits of the glossy screen?

You may want to check out your local Apple store where both the glossy and matte screens are on display.
Glossy screens provide more vivid, vibrant colors and deeper, richer blacks. They're great for watching movies, viewing photos, etc.
Matte screens are good for use in high-sunlight environments or in situations where you have a lot of light shining on your screen. Many professional photographers opt for these screens because they more accurately reflect how a photo will look when printed. (Don't be confused -- photos look better on the glossy screen, but when you print them they'll look less vivid. Photographers don't like that because it makes it tough to anticipate how a photo will look when printed.)
Here's my two cents: I've spent 20 years on a matte screen. I used the glossy one for a day and you couldn't pay me to switch back. In my opinion, the glossy screen is fantastic.

  • Advice for cleaning iPhoto Library?

    Hello!
I will try to keep this brief. I got my first Mac 6 years ago when I switched over from Windows and obviously made some mistakes along the way in terms of dealing with files, etc. in Mac vs. what I would do in windows. Over the past 6 months or so (now that I am finally out of school and on to the "real world") I have trying to correct the wrongs I had done to my earlier versions of my Macbook in my naivety (including 7 different instances of Python floating around random places).
I am on to my last hurdle, my iPhoto library. I have some ~10,000 pictures and ~200 events including some images that have incorrect dates associated with them and therefore do not sit where they should in the library. I have set place and face data for all images in my library as well once those features were introduced.
Unfortunately I did not let iPhoto copy the master files into the library, instead keeping them in separate folders in my pictures folder.
I am now trying to figure out the best way to export all of my events and save all the metadata associated with them (except faces which I know there is no standard for and therefore cannot be saved) so I can set up a new entirely clean iPhoto library without any of the crap I put it through earlier in it's life. I have no need to keep the "originals" as they are all unedited (except for the metadata changes in iPhoto) and all JPEGs anyways.
In my testing of trying to export an event and then reimport into a new library instance, I noticed that the masters in the new library are all being sorted according to import date and not date photo was taken since I have tried correcting all my image dates using the iPhoto batch editing. This may just be OCD of me, but is there a way to have iPhoto deal with the masters according to photo date instead of import date? I tried using Exiftool to change the "Date created" file metadata to the same date as the Exif metadata, but iPhoto still sorted the Masters by import date.
And any tips about the best way to dump the current library and put it into a new one and keep all possible metadate added in iPhoto already would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

That will not help with your original issue
The original issue with saving all possible metadata? Correct, I understand I definitely lose some information, but (except for the Faces information) I do not care about some of the other stuff being lost and most of what I care about (geotags, etc.) is still being saved to the EXIF/IPTC data upon export from iPhoto. It came down to a question of whether I care more about truly cleaning up all the original files metadata (or the newly exported ones from iPhoto that I will now treat as the "originals") in the event I ever move off iPhoto or care more about doing less work. iPhoto Library Manager is a great tool that I plan on making part of my arsenal, but to get my files where I want them now, I have to do this lengthier/more time-consuming process first because I screwed it up so much over the past ~6 years.

iPhoto will always use the date of the import session for the "Masters" folder. That is a feature, not a bug. If you want a different date on the  event in the "Masters" folder, there is no help but to change the system date and relaunch iPhoto before importing and to trick iPhoto into believing the current date is different.  You really would not want to ressort to such measures.
I figured, given that it is Apple and a package contents things that most users should never touch, that was probably the case, but asking the user community for confirmation never hurts. And no, I do not care enough about it to try tricking it that way. .

and some weird issue where it could not find the original files for some albums
Exporting reimporting will not find the original files. If they are missing, you cannot export. You have to find them outside your library, if they are referenced, Inside your library rebuilding should find them for you.
I tried relinking inside iPhoto to the original images and running the rebuild again, but it still had certain image images. So when exporting those albums with a few missing images, the missing ones just copy an empty symlink, which I then replace with the actual original image I have on the hard drive. Then copy the metadata over using EXIFTOOL.
    Thanks for all your help/comments!

  • Advice for clean install of windows 8.1

I finally figured out how to install windows 8.1 from an 8.1 iso and get rid of Toshiba's bloatware.  The computer ran so much better, however, I could not get the wifi installed and there was another missing PCI driver.
I went ahead and restored back to the default toshiba image to see what it had configured.  Is there a folder on the computer I can copy that has all the drivers?  Or even a set of drivers or program to go out and get the correct drivers?
I have a Satellite L55-B5267.  I used all the drivers I could find on the site and it didn't seem to be the correct ones.

    Nevermind.. I figured it out.. see here;

  • Advice for cleaning up files from my drive

I'm going through old directories and want to delete what I do not need from old projects and transfer what I do to other drives.
Is there any reason to keep:
    1.) Thumbnail Cache Files?
2.) Render Files that have subfolders called Constant Frames?
3.) I found a whole bunch 2 GB files called Sequence 1-av1, Sequence 1-av2, etc. These files will not open when double-clicked on. A message indicating "File Error: Wrong type. displays, and when I drag them into the QT player, it indicates The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file. What are these? Can I delete them?
    Thanks.

    What's up, Nick?
If I delete my Compressor Files from my external hard drive, will my project files (my movie) still be intact without any changes at all?
How about my Color Files? Can I delete them from my external HD with out altering my project files (my movie)?
I'm working on a very short movie, and I have a 1TB external but it's almost full from all my different compressions and color gradings.
Also, can I delete older saved versions of my project without effecting my latest version?
    Thanks,
    Trey

  • Cleaning the glossy screen

Since the glossy screen is glass would it be ok to use a glass cleaner on it? ex. Windex

No need, really. The black cloth that came with the computer is intended for cleaning the screen. If you use any sort of cleaning fluid it must not be abrasive nor contain harsh chemicals.

  • MacBook Pro - Glossy Screen or Not

I've just recently started to use a digital camera and Aperture. I'm selling my old Powerbook and will be getting a MacBook Pro. Any thoughts on whether I should opt for the glossy screen on the new laptop? What are the pros and cons of the glossy versus the anti-glare 'matte' screen.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Paul

    Hi,
I just bought my MacBook Pro over a month ago, with the Glossy Screen. I had an Acer Laptop with a matte Screen before that and was always verry disapointed about the poor picture quality. I use my MacBook mainly indoors and I'm really very happy with the Glossy Screen. The pictures look so much better!
    Best regards,
    Gerald

  • Need Advice fr/ Graphic Designers/Video Editors about Glossy Screens

Would like to hear some advice from industry professionals working in Graphic Design and Video Editing about working on a Glossy Screen MBP.
No offense, but please do not share speculative responses (these forums are notorious for that) I just want people who actually own a glossy screen MBP.
    Many thanks,
    O.

I do not have a glossy screen MBP (just a matte one), but I had a glossy Toshiba prior to this. I do a lot of 3D, and I definitely prefer the matte to the glossy. The shiny screen gives me headaches after about an hour, and has no major benefits that Apple says they do (except look all shiny and new).
I'll never buy a glossy lcd again.

  • Non-Glossy screen for the 13" MacBook Pro...the 13" MacBook Air has it!?!?!

Sorry if this has already been discovered, but I just realized.....Why isn't there a Matte option for the screen on the 13" MacBook Pro? The 17" has always had it with an upgrade, the 15" now has the option for the upgrade, but why not the 13"??? I was trying to think what it would look like and then realized.....it would look like the MacBook Air......RIGHT? Because the MacBook air doesn't have a black frame around the screen, and its not glossy, and is the same 13" 1280 x 800, so why not bring that option to the MacBook PRO? (On second thought, I'd also like to have a 1440 x 900 option even though the fonts will be even smaller! lol I love screen space!)

As someone with 20 years professional experience in digital imaging, both in video and stills, Photoshop retouching, Quark press work, and working with everything from Binuscan to Shake, having supervised thousands of press checks and taught thousands of personnel in everything from Newspapers to video Post-houses as a consultant and trainer, I love the glossy screens for the color saturation, rich blacks and fine detail rendition.
That said, the many years of glossy Sony, Barco and Mitsu/Lacie CRT screens have taught me to use hoods and proper lighting; this goes for matte LCD screens as well, where ANY pro color-critical work should be done with a hood, such as the Hoodman or Think Tank products. That said, I have no problem in airports, outdoors, etc. using any of my glossy screen MPS, I find a properly calibrated glossy screen on these to be, at least with the latest iteration of the glossy screens available on the Unibody MBPs, eminently usable for pro color work.
The point is, at least for me, that anyplace I'd need to worry about glare and reflections on a glossy screen MBP, I also have to worry about the same on the matte screen. For example, my wife now uses my previous generation MBP matte-screen 15" LED backlit model. This is the case when I use hers when out and about. Pro work CAN and IS done by many pros who PREFER the glossy screen MBPs to their matte screen counterparts, and manage to get pro quality work done more easily on them, as it suits their taste, and somehow manages to produce results avery bit as professional as pro users on matte-screen MBPs. I know I'm in the minority here, with regard to pros who prefer glossy screen MBPs to matte-screen ones.
Since I am, after all, in the pro minority, I agree that Apple NEVER should have removed the matte option, and I'd be happy to have, and think it's the ethical thing to do, Apple not only offer matte screens on all laptop products from now on, but that they RETURN to making glossy displays on MacBook Pros (and MacBooks, for that matter) an EXTRA-COST OPTION, and make matte screen displays the standard. That's the fair and logical thing for Apple to do, and I wouldn't mind at all paying for being in the Pro minority by paying an extra $50.00 USD, or even $100.00 over a standard matte-screen display in any and al of the Apple laptop line.
The matte screen's no longer what I use on my laptops for pro work, and i prefer it that way. But I know, too, that if Apple suddenly yanked the glossy displays with NO Option AT ALL of buying a MBP with a glossy display, I'd be freakin' livid. So I empathize with those pros, and anyone else, who prefers matte screens but who've been unfairly 'locked out' by Apple from paying the same as glossy screen laptops on the 15" and the 17" UMBPs and having NO glossy option on the 13" UMBP. Makes no sense at all, to quote Husker Du. ;^) BUT- pros who prefer the glossy display MBPs (I've owned all 3 unibody MBPs, with and without the superior quality latest-generation displays- the 13" MBP, the 15" MBP and the 17"), should, IMO, have at least the option to purchase the glossy display, at least as an extra-cost option. THAT would make the most sense, since the majority of pros who use UMBPs prefer the matte screen, and that vast majority should not only have the matte-screen option, but the matte-screen discount as well!

  • Possible to switch 15" Hi Res glossy for anti-glare screen?

I bought a 15" MacBook Pro a few months ago and have found I don't like the hi-res glossy screen. Is it possible to switch to the hi-res anti-glare option without buying a new machine? The computer's great otherwise, but I edit lots of photos and the reflections on the glossy are distracting.

Welcome to the Apple Communities forums. Unfortunately Apple does not offer an after purchase option to change to the Hi-Res Anti glare option.
    You could try the follow
    http://www.techrestore.com/mac/mbp-unibody-repair.shtml
If you scroll down they have a service that for $199 will remove the Glossy option and install a Matte finish instead. This service does not void your Apple Warranty either according to their site.
    Good Luck

  • Any known problem for C2D 15" Glossy Screen?

I have a C2D 15" Matt screen model now and I have all those problem everybody else had here with the 9C60, uneven backlit, grainy etc.
I've contact AppleCare and they said they can replace my machine.
They said I can have Glossy if I wish to.
Are there any known problem for the Glossy Model?
If the Glossy model doesn't have all those problem. I think I'll ask for the Glossy one.
Please tell me if there are any so that I won't make another wrong decision.
    Thanks so much!

I got my machine on Jan 5 and here is a picture of my 9C60.
Actually I don't feel anything wrong until I read the threads here.
But can you guys take a look of it and tell me how's this piece of 9C60?

  • Is screen guard foam cleaning spray safe for cleaning?

I saw a few people recommend the screen guard foam cleaning spray to clean their computer screens (product link provided below) becuase it's supposed to be non-water based so it shouldn't hurt your electronics. i did a little bit of research on the web, but i couldn't find nearly as much info on it as i would have liked.
does anyone know for sure that it is safe? if you have used it, i would love to hear your take on it.

Here are a few ideas that might be helpful...
I make sure my computer is completely SHUT DOWN before I begin any cleaning process.
I always use the microfiber cloth I got for cleaning my camera lens and glasses. When using it on the display, I make sure it's clean, then I use very soft, circular strokes, as gently as possible, in small increments, all across the display. I take my sweet time.
When done, my Mac is brought back to life, and the display looks wonderfully clear.
