Advice for how long encoding should take

I just thought I'd post this, as it was giving me a lot of grief, and by the look of it, there are many others in a similar position.
It is a real bummer that Apple can't seem to build in to their software a progress line indicating how much longer Audio Encoding is likely to take, as it seems to take a looooong time.
I posted many various questions, and a lot of other posters advised me to abort my iDVD project, as it was "taking too long". I checked the computer's Activity Monitor, and it indicated that nothing was unusual, and that iDVD was functioning normally.
My movie was 105 minutes long, with about 25 songs/audio clips, loads of transitions, titles, photo imports using Ken Burns effect - the lot. It took TWENTY-EIGHT hours from start to finish. In numerals now - 28 HOURS - but it did finish. I've read other posters who indicate that theirs have also taken a longer than usual time.
So if you're in a similar sounding position, stick with it!

I think it's pretty ridiculous too - but I'm really pleased with the outcome, because I was about to give up.
Running 1.25GB of RAM, and had 20GB of space on internal HD. External HD, which had the iMovie and the iDVD project on, still had about 140GB space. iMac G5 is the earlier model - with no iSight.
But it was a really big project. 19 Chapters and several animated menus, each with music. Had to burn Best Quality, as the drive only burns single-layer discs, but the quality is not at all bad.
Anyway, it took a mighty long time is all I wanted to let people know.

If Apple has not received your phone, obviously it can't even be evaluated for warranty purposes. Have you tried calling AppleCare to verify whether they have received the phone or not?

  • Curious how long it SHOULD take to back up my 3G (iOS3) to Mac Mini?

It has been working steadily for over 6 hours and still not done, and phone only about half full of data/songs etc. 16g 3G, MacMini OSX 10.6.8. I wanted to simply start using my newer mac for backups and whatever, but I can't believe it is taking so long to finish the initial backup on this computer. Is it possible there is a larger problem here? At the "speed" with which the process is occurring, it looks like I will have to leave the phone hooked up all night long just to complete the backup.
The other part of this is that I wanted to upgrade to iOS 4.2, but before I upgraded I needed to sync and backup the phone according to the messages that came up on screen when I connected the phone.
By the time I see any responses it will likely be done, but I'm worried that the extreme time involved is an indication of a bigger issue of unknown nature. And, I'm worried that subsequent backups may be equally time consuming, especially if there is a problem with the phone.
Any ideas? Is this "normal" for a first backup on a new(er) computer?
(In case it has any bearing, iTunes 10.) I'm not syncing music or videos, just the address book/contacts and calendars.

Thanks for the almost immediate reply, Randers4. When I awoke this morning, my phone indicated the backup was successful and the sync was complete. There is only one backup listed (as I only attempted the one that took over 8 hours yesterday), and it is the only backup of the phone in it's pre-iOS 4.2 form. If I delete that backup,  can I restore the phone (to it's current state) if something goes wrong with the upgrade?
I started the initial backup at 4:30 yesterday afternoon. iTunes indicated (and still does) that it completed at 1:30 this morning. I started to download the iOS upgrade at approx 4:15 this afternoon; at 5:30 the progress bar showed the backup was going to take at least as long as yesterday's.
I tried to find a description of what happens when I attempt to download the upgrade, but can't find anything. There are two choices when I see the dialog on plugging the phone into USB: Download without installing, or Download and Install--which requires a complete backup and then automatically installs the upgrade.
Is there a choice to download and install the iOS upgrade without backing up, since I believe I have a good backup already, just completed this morning?
Or, do you think the existing backup is corrupt simply because it took more than 8 hours to complete? (I was running that original backup through a USB 2.0 hub rather than directly into the computer; and, I didn't unplug any of the other USB cables even though each connected device was in the "Off" state.) The phone is now plugged directly into the back of the MacMini and the keyboard is the only other USB device plugged in.
Sorry to be asking so many questions, but I searched over an hour in here yesterday before I even posted my first questions, and couldn't find any answers that appeared relevant. Thanks for any additional advice you can offer!

  • How long does it take for cc to download to desktop?

Hi everyone  - I just signed up for CC and can't seem to download the desktop version. The installer is just hanging forever on my desktop. Does anyone know how long it should take to install?

    Hi Goonerang,
You can try adjusting the location of your temporary directory.  This will be a system configuration issue though and not adjustable through the Adobe Download Assistant itself.
Many factors, such as the connection type and network traffic, affect download speed. See Troubleshoot download problems
Let me know if it helps.
    Thanks!

  • How long will it take to convert a pdf to excel?

I am using Adobe ExportPDF online to convert a pdf file to an excel file and it is taking a really long time.  I was wondering how long it should take?

Time is not fix, it depens upon the size of the file. For better performance please refer below URL

  • How long does it take to extract CS6?

How long does it take to extract CS6? Mine has been extracting for over an hour.

Did you manage to install? If its Master Collection it may take a while, but I don't think that it would take more than an hour.
A lot of it depends on your computer, RAM, free space on disc etc so its diffult to say exactly how long it should take.

  • How long does it take to download mountain lion

just downloading mountain lion on my imac ( MAC OS X 10.7.5) ---any idea how long it should take? its starting to look like its going to be slow...

That's around 1.6 MB/s or approximately. So it should take about one hour at that speed. However, your service speed is not necessarily the transfer speed between you and the Apple servers. Expect the actual time to be longer.

  • How long does it take and how should I learn...

Hi. First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong forum.
I am new to web-design (as in brand-new xD) and wish to learn Dreamweaver.  With Dreamweaver being such a big application, with so many different tools etc I decided it would be best if I learned the languages I wish to use first, so as I know what Dreamwever is creating and I can 'fine-tune' my websites.
The languages I wish to learn are:
    HTML
    PHP
    Javascript
MySQL (I am aware that this isn't a 'language', but would still like to learn how it works and use it effectively)
    CSS
    My questions are:
In which order should I learn these languages?
Which version of each language should I learn?
For example should I learn HTML5, with it being relatively new and not widely supported, but with the support growing so fast would it be worth just learning HTML5 straight away?
Can you reccomend any books etc for me to learn with?  I am a full time college student, so will be teaching myself after college hours.
How long should I expect it to take to learn each language? (If you want to give the answer in days/months assume I will be spending 2hours per day average learning each language)
I do not want to learn every single detail about each language, but I do want to learn to a high enouhg level that I am comfortable with reading, understanding and editing my own code.
To help me understand your answers more clearly it would be great if you can just copy and paste this below (although feel free not to ):
What order should I learn these in?
    Language:
    Version:
How long (roughly) should it take?:
What resources van you reccomend for me to learn from?:
What experience do you have? (I'm just nosey like that :P):
    Other comments:
Please feel free to copy and paste the second half (with all the questions) as many times as you like for each language you choose to tell me about.
Any help would be very greatly appreciated and please, if you for some reason find this post offensive, think back to when you were learning; everyone has to start somewhere.
    Thanks for your time,
    Ryan

  • How long does it take for a store to process an online order for store pick up

    Hello,
I placed an order for a Macbook Pro on November 11, 2014. Scheduled an in store pick up where Best Buy estimated pick up date is November 14. I didn't receive the email or text to pick up the item, so I decided to call 1-800-best-buy to see if I can get the new estimated pick up date. I was told by the representative the laptop is actually already at the store, and waiting for me to pick it up. I called the store to make sure, and was told that I can pick it tomorrow morning. I called in today was placed on hold for around 15 minutes. Decided to call 1-800-best-buy again, and found out that it will take another 3-5 days before I get my laptop. I asked the representative to change the pick to another store that has the laptop available right now. It was change since around 10 am in the morning. I called the store to make sure that they got my order, the Manager told me that once the truck deliver more laptop. I will be able to get mine, and I should call in the afternoon to check on the availablity. I called around 5 pm to check, and was told that even if there is a laptop. I would still need to wait until best buy process my order. Called 1-800-best-buy again, and was told that Apple usually take 3-4 for hours to verify the information. Right now, my order status is still "Preparing Order".
My Questions: How long will it take for Best Buy to finish Preparing Order?
Why does it show on the website that if I order by 8 PM I wil be able to pick up the laptop today. Meanwhile, the store pick up was transfered since 10 am this morning, and at 10 PM tonight still nothing.
If I cancel my order, will I get all of my reward zone certificates back?

    Hello sourlime,
Welcome to the forum. I'm not a big online shopper, but when I do order something, I expect it to be an easy, painless transaction. It sounds like you had some troubles with your order not being available on the estimated pick up date, and I sincerely apologize for any frustration you encountered.
Using the e-mail you registered on the forum, I was able to locate your order, and was glad to see you were finally able to pick it up. I do appreciate you taking the time to visit the forum, and I assure you I will be documenting your comments for review. If there is anything else you need assistance with, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Once again, I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and thank you for posting here on the forum.

  • HT4009 How long does it take for apple to return with the needed code for in app purchases.  We have a developer working through elance that states he submitted a finalized version last friday to apple and is still waiting to get the code back from Apple?

We are being told by our elance developer that he is just waiting on apple to return the code for in app purchases with our app.  he says he had to submit a complete version before they would give it to him and that he did that last friday.  Needless to say i don;t beleive him.  Can anyone validate for me the process of getting the code installed into our app and how long it should really take.

I'd say an average of one week, depending on backlog. Expect two if you are outside the US.
The outage has caused some lingering effects that seem to be delaying things for some, however.
Patience is key in all things when it comes to being a developer

  • How long does it take for Apple to send the content code for a free upgrade to Mountain Lion?

Has anyone managed to successfully receive the content code in their email for a free ugprade to Mountain Lion?
I bought my MBP on 14 July so I qualified for the free upgrade. Went to the website and filled in the form along with my serial number about 2 nights ago. Still haven't received my content code yet. How long does it take? Should I be speaking to someone already? Who?
    Thanks.

We are being advised it can take up to 72 hours !

  • How long does it take for iCloud to sync to my devices?

I just discovered that I could drag Word documents onto the iCloud web site from my computer. Pretty handy trick.  Drag and drop should be how this works.  So to test it I dragged a document from my My Documents Folder onto the iCloud web site in my browser (I wish my company would update to Windows 7 so it would be easier to align windows on screen).  It appeared to upload just fine.  So I went to my iPhone and opened Pages to see how badly the file translated from Word 2007 to Pages for iPhone.  And no document.
I have waited about 20 minutes so far. Am I being to impatient?  Just how long does it take for iCloud to promulgate my documents to my iDevices?  I am hopefully getting an iPad for Xmas so I need to get this worked out before I actually need this for work.

It actually goes pretty fast once you are on a WiFi connection.  I found an open WiFi connection at Starbucks and when i got back to my desk the files were all there on the web site.  I fond the Use Cellular connection to sync in settings and decided that I didn't need to sync my docs all the time so I will just wait to connect when I can get to a WiFi.
Now I just need to figure out how to sync my contacts.  iCloud doesn't seem to play nice with Google contacts when they are on an Exchange connection.

  • Should my screen is cracked, how long does it take to get it fixed on apple repair shop?

Should my ipad screen is cracked, how long does it take to fix it on apple repair shop?

We are all end-users like you and not Apple employees or agents. Time to repeir depends of the repair facility. Contact several to see which has the best turn-around time for such repairs.

  • HT3302 How much will be charged for replacing a cracked screen for iPhone 5? How long it will take for repair?

    Hi Folks,
I am a visitor and had my iPhone 5 cracked the front screen today, I just want to know how long it will take for repair if I send to Apple USA, and the charge for the replacement of the cracked screen.
Thanks for your advice in advance, I am currently in LA and will put into LA Apple Store asap.

Warranty and support are only valid in the country of origin.
If the device was not purchased in the US, an Apple store in the US will not touch it.
