Advice for Tiger, ipad, CS3

If this is asked already just post me a link, thanks.
I want to make sure I know my options. We got the 16GB 3G ipad without reading that you have to have Mac OS 10.5.8. I currently have 10.4.11 and have never upgraded my system because of software compatibility issues with Adobe software.
I have Adobe CS3 now. I use InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat a lot.
Back in the day I was using Quark, so when I updated to CS3 all my documents were compatible in InDesign CS3. I don't have any problems with my current setup. I still need my quark documents that are now only compatible with inDesign.
My only option, for the ipad to work is to upgrade to Leopard and upgrade to Adobe CS5. That doesn't mean my quark docs will work in the new InDesign. Plus that's a lot of money to dish out to make the ipad work. What other options are there seeing I don't really want to upgrade to Leopard. The ipad won't work on anything less, bummer. Wondering if I should just take the ipad back, if they'll let me, got from an at&t store.
It looks like I'm wayyy behind on the system (10.6.5!). My mom and sister also have Tiger and will need to upgrade soon, they won't have any problems upgrading, they just haven't backed photos up and that's holding them back.
Bottom line. Would it be cheaper to buy another mac that already has snow leopard on it? Or to buy Snow Leopard and Adobe CS5? I wouldn't have to have any Adobe professional on the new mac, maybe just a photoshop elements or something.

Here a cheap solution:
Buy an external harddrive. Install Leopard / Snow Leopard on it. Boot off the external drive when you want to sync your iPad.
No software compatibility problems.
Unless things have changed, the $29 Snow Leopard licensing requirements indicate that you need to own Leopard on the machine.
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.
Has everything interface:
FireWire 800/400 + USB2, + eSATA 'Quad Interface'
save a little money interface:
FireWire 400 + USB 2.0
This web page lists both external harddrive types. You may need to scroll to the right to see both.

Do you have backup of your stuff?
If not, here is a good time to buy a big drive & partition the drive.

  • Advice for Aperture + PS CS3 config

I've read a lot of posts on this but had a couple questions I haven't seen specifically adressed--
My workload has increased and I've given up on my Macbook Pro as my primary machine. It just bogs down, getting slower and slower, until it took almost five minutes to open up a 70 meg PS file last night.
I use Aperture for tons of Canon 5D raw files (photo assignments) for its conversion and organization virtues. My primary needs are a snappy, responsive system to move files around within aperture and edit within PS CS3. I'll usually have those two plus iTunes and Safari running at all times, often some more apps like Photo Mechanic and DXO as well, though less frequently. I'm not so concerned about fast conversions to jpeg etc. I just want to be able to eliminate as much as possible any beach balls and spinning things and sticky cursors that make me wait.
Cost is an issue. I'm thinking right now about getting the 2.66 Mac Pro with x1900, standard config, and buy four one-gig sticks of ram from Crucial for 5 gigs total. I have some spare sata drives I can stick in on my own.
SO--I've read conflicting info about how important the clock speed is. Considering I don't need the fastest batch conversions, rather need more responsiveness, would the bump to 3.0 make much of a difference in performance?
Also, is the Mac Pro line due for an update? And finally, any thoughts on my config would be appreciated... I'd like to try to keep it to about €3200 if possible, but could go over if necessary.
    thanks, any thoughts appreciated.

The hot zone is not a problem. SuperDuper is probably the most reliable program, and I use it constantly for restoring the system to various drives almost every day.
Laptop drives tend to be slower than FW800 or eSATA so I would try using something else for boot drive.
All programs create temp files - but I don't know how Aperture works - so I'll skip on that. That causes files to be scattered all over the drive and increase seeks having a large penalty.
I use to create my own "hot zone." Put a 4.4GB file (dmg) on an empty drive that was to be boot drive. Then use DU Restore to move the system volume over. Delete the 4.4GB holder.
All data and home directory was on #2 drive. Disk I/O could be concurrent and really helped my G4 MDD. And helps my current system.
I would really like to see a 10K 150GB Raptor as boot drive.
The boot drive, though, can only do so many I/Os and if you are working with a lot of files, or even one large file, everything else has to wait and go into the queue.
Do you have swap files? pageouts? that is hitting your boot drive too.
If you don't need scratch disk, does it help to move a file to another drive to work on it? or is Aperture really just cpu and gpu and only needs 2-3GB RAM?
I expect to see Mac get some better graphics card options over the summer. AMD just said it is going to almost skip the initial X2900 XT and try to ram up production on 45nm (seems like Intel and everyone is onto 45nm now) and get the X2950 XT out the door sooner rather than later, even as it struggles.
And Nvidia wants to see more pro applications (like Aperture and FCP2) move stuff off the CPU and in their FX GPU cards due soon. And the Intel has updated their laptop graphics chip for this summer school buying season.
CS3 was one of your concerns, and there you do need more RAM, scratch disk, RAID.
The only upgrade that would really make waiting worthwhile would be Xeon X5355 Clovertown 2.66GHz to replace the current chips being used. Right now, only the 8-core 3GHz uses Clovertown, and costs $1499 extra. The other, introduction of two 16x lane PCIe slots able to drive a pair of X2900-series (and 2950 is lower power consumption but right now 300W is total for all PCIe).
You could try cloning with SuperDuper to FW800 and see how that feels?

You have to restore the device within iTunes. You want to use the same computer that you always sync with so that you can restore your app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the iPad.

The only one that can issue a PUK code is a carrier, which you've already made clear you don't have.

  • Advice on improving graphics for app for both iPad and iPhone

I am creating an app for both iPad and iPhone 4 and it looks terrible on the iPhone 4.
I have created the Flash File in Flash CS5.5 IDE with Movie Size 1024 x 768 and I am using the following AIR for IOS settings:
    Rendering: CPU
    Device: iPhone and iPad
    Resolution: High
All my graphics are vector so I assumed that it would look crisp on both devices. It is not as perfect looking on the iPad as it appears on my PC monitor but I can live with it. I can't however live with the iPhone 4 appearance.
I am therefore seeking advice on how to improve the iPhone 4 appearance.
As far as I am aware, there is not a way to use 2 sets of graphics, one for each device. Please correct me if this is wrong and it would offer me a solution.
Would doing all the graphics as PNG be a solution?
Btw I am using AIR 3.2 SDK if that has any relevance and my graphics are static.
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the swift reply Colin. I do not recall setting a stage.quality setting - is the default setting low?
I did a quick google search and see this appears to be the code I need. I assume I put this in the first frame of my Flash movie?
    stage.quality = StageQuality.MEDIUM;
    Thanks

  • Any advice for ipad's battery.. Thank you!

I need some tips on how to maintain the battery performance (since i just bought the ipad month ago). Thank you.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Does anyone have advice for purchasing a keyboard case for my iPad 2?

I want to buy a Bluetooth keyboard case for my iPad so I can take better notes during class. Ive been browsing around the Internet and checking eBay for a case I wanted for about a week now, but I still havent found one that I know will be worth the money. I would like to be able to use my iPad normally with it still being in the case. A lot of cases look like they would fold up, but not to where it would be useable. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or maybe any suggestions of cases not to purchase?

  • How can I sync my photo contents in iPhoto on my iMac to my new iPAD's iPhoto?  I follwed all the instructions on manuals for both iPAD and iTunes re syncing, but I cannot find "phone button" under Device name on iTunes page. Please help!  Thanks!

I follwed all the instructions on manuals for both iPAD and iTunes re syncing, but after physically connecting iPAD with iMac with USB or via WiFi I still cannot find "phone button" under Device name on iTunes page. Please help!  Thanks!
I have been creating a photo book using a lots of photographs on iPhoto, and then I took another photos by using new iPAD which I want to integrate with the original album/book on iMac. I was able to import them from iPAD's iPhoto to iMac's iPhoto.  However I cannot import or transfer or sync anything from iMac's iPhoto to that of my iPAD.
So my iPhoto page on iPAD contains only 3 or 4 newly created albums, and no other info.  That means no syncing....
I am supposed to be able to work on this project on either of these iPAD and iMac, correct?
I am puzzled.  I appreciate for your advice and help.
    Thank you!

It doesn't appear under the iPad device on the left-hand sidebar of iTunes, you need to select the iPad device on the sidebar and then select the Photos tab on the right-hand side of iTunes e.g.
And then on the right-hand side :

  • Protective case for new ipad

I have just bought my first iPad - the new iPad (iPad 3?) - and am looking for protective casing that protects the back as well, rather than just the screen that Apple currently have to offer.
Looking on Amazon.co.uk I came across the G-Hub GeniusCover (black carbon fibre style case cover folio) which you can slip the iPad into, and is designed to allow full functionality, together with flip-stand function and magnetic sleep sensor.
The reviews are pretty well universally positive and, apart from being less than half the price of the Apple just screen protection, it would seem to offer ideal protection.
Does anyone have any opinions or advice to offer?

For my iPad 2, I bought an Adesso case/keyboard model WKB-2000CD http://www.adesso.com/en/component/content/article/49-coming-soon/455-wkb-2000cd .html Works great & looks good. The keyboard is easier to use than Apple's on-screen keyboard. Do a Google search using the model number to get the best price. About the same price as Apple's covers & it covers the whole iPad. Although the new iPad  is slightly thicker, it also fits it.

  • How can I download Boot Camp for Tiger

Apple discontinued BootCamp beta last year. They have all expired and no longer work.
    It was a beta program.
You need to purchase Leopard in order to install BootCamp and get the updates.
You can also install Winders without BootCamp using a virtual program like Parallels or using the free bootmanager, rEFIt. Either of these will allow you to install Winders, Linux or any other OSs on your HD, but you are on your own if you take that route.
The only support path is using Leopard.

  • I bought "Pages" "Keynote" and "Numbers" Apps for my iPad and iPhone

I bought "Pages" "Keynote" and "Numbers" Apps for my iPad and iPhone and now I have a new iMac but the Apps didn't install? I thought when you bought an App that is on one device it would be available on all other devices? The App store is now wanting me to pay for the Apps again? Is this right? Do I have to buy another  version of these Apps for the iMac?

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
That is determined by what type of disk that it is. It may be a disk that only allows you to install Windows on your Dell computer and would not allow Windows to be installed on a Boot Camp partitition or as a virtual machine in an app such as VirtualBox on your Mac. If that is the case, you would need to purchase a retail Windows install disk.

  • Any best practices for the iPad mini????

I am in the beginning stages of designing my mag for the iPad.... now the iPad mini seems to be all the hype and the latest news states that the mini may out sell the larger one.
So... I know that the dimensions are 1x1 on bumping down to the smaller screen... but what about font sizes? what about the experience? Anyone already ahead of the game?
I have my own answers to these questions, but any one out there have some best practice advice or links to some articles they find informative...

I think 18-pt body text is fine for the iPad 2 but too small for the iPad mini. Obviously, it depends on your design and which font you're using, but it seems like a good idea to bump up the font size a couple points to account for the smaller screen.
For the same reason, be careful with small buttons and small tap areas.
I've also noticed that for whatever reason, MSOs and scrollable frames in PNG/JPG articles look great on the iPad 2 but look slightly more pixelated on the iPad Mini. It might just be my imagination.
Make sure that you test your design on the Mini.
