Advice for Upcoming App Spree

Thanks for asking those questions; I knew I was bound to leave some information out. Unfortunately, I don't have verifiable income during the summer, but I did during the school year, and I will during this upcoming school year. The only reason I was denied for the Discover CLI was because my history was so short (didn't even have a FICO score yet). I always PIF. I didn't even think to include that because that just seems like it should go without question with the way I view credit haha. Anyway, yeah I always plan to PIF with any credit cards. As far as getting my other FICOs, is there any free way? Just the whole reason I'm into credit cards is to save money (rewards now and lower interest on loans in the future), so paying for anything credit related kind of contradicts why I do this stuff. I do plan to get a Citi Double Cash in the future, and then I'll have a monthly EQ FICO score as well. I have looked at all of the Capital One cards, but none of them are really rewards leaders. Because I'm mostly just interested in the very best cards for me and Capital One triple pulls, I'm not really interested in them. As far as the plausibility of getting these cards, I think that if I applied for only one of the them (except maybe the Fidelity), I would be approved because I've seen many thin, clean files approved for AmEx cards, seen people with only 6 months of credit history approved for the Freedom despite Chase saying that they like to see a year of history, and the Sallie Mae seems to be geared towards students or recent graduates, so it makes sense that thinner files get approved for the Sallie Mae card. Anyway, I could be totally wrong about any of this, but I think that I stand a decent chance for these cards on their own, but applying in the right order might be key to getting hopefully at least 3.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I'm definitely a bit worried about having a successful app spree and then Barclays closing my account because of too many recent accounts. I was under the impression that the charge cards are easier to get approved for than the revolvers, and the PRG is a charge card while the ED is a revolver. Either way, I don't really see the point of applying for cards just because I am more likely to get approved for them. I'm more interested in applying for cards because their rewards fit my spending habits. This same logic goes for why I don't intend to apply for a Capital One card. Also, as far as feasibility of my approval for these cards, here are a few relevant links so that we hopefully don't have to talk that much about that on this thread:Sallie Mae approval with 9 months history and a 642 TU FICOSallie Mae and Chase Freedom approval with 8 months history and a 707 TU FICOFidelity Amex approval with 9 months history, 7 months AAoA, 723 EQ FICO, and 741 TU FICOAmex ED approval with 6 months history and 696 EXAmex BCP approval with 6 months historyAmex PRG approval with 7 months historyAmex BCE approval with 9 months historyAmex BCE and Chase Freedom approval with 8 months historyChase Freedom approval with similar profileChase Freedom approval with short history No offense, but if you search enough for what you want to hear, you will find it... I know you are not opting for the charge cards, but it made me think, how many teens/young adults need a charge card...Which made me think further, it would be great because there is a less chance of accumulating cc debt! Something to think about. How much money do you spend a month that can be put on credit cards? What are your 1, 5, and 10 year credit goals? I did check credit pulls database (which is a gamble anyway) and the amex prg had lots of approvals even for scores lower than yours. Go for it. I really dont care for that salliemae card. #1 because it is with barclays. Plus, their rewards cap seems kind of low. But yeah, it would be a geat card for a student especially for bookstore/amazon and you can have the percent deposited into upromise or pay interest on student loans (as I am sure you already know!).
Anyway, did you check the chase approval site? I would apply for amex first. If you dont get approved, call in for a recon for a different product. I think you will be just fine with whichever card you select. I would apply for chase second. And Salliemae 3rd. Only because the first two have the most room to grow with you and therefor seem to be the priority to me. My reply doesnt have much advice, but hopefully it will bump it to the top so others will chime in!

• Need advice for free app to help MS sufferers

Good afternoon all
I have just registered on the forum to ask one questions and thank you in advance for taking the time to read it !
I have been doing some voluntary work to help MS sufferers track their food intake in order to isolate triggers for symptoms in the hope of improving their quality of life.
Basically some users have been using crude excel spreadsheets through documents to go and transfering the data manually and my mission is to save some time in that process.
Ideally I would like Combo Boxes on the Documents to Go spreadsheets although they are unsupported.
Therefore I would like some help to find an alternative solution for a very basic data entry system which is offline and can be transferred to our Access analysis database periodically. I understand there are live equivalents which use the mobile internet connection to hit an access database stored somewhere else, although because of data plan costs and the relative simplicity of the data being entered we would ideally like an offline system.
There are only 10 columns for data entry, 2 of which need to combo box / Id concept.
Any ideas?
Thank you!
Damian

• RAID Disk Layout advice for Hybrid OLTP/Batch app

I was hoping for some advice from the community on my disk layout for a proposed upgrade to our Oracle setup (Windows 2003, JDE+Oracle9i, primarily OLTP/Batch extracts). Focusing purely from a hardware perspective, we're being given 14 disks to work with. I had initially thought that it was a lot, but when I start putting the spindles into RAID configurations, it doesn't give me a lot of room.

2 Disks RAID 1 (mirrored) for OS, App and Oracle Binaries
2 Disks RAID 1 (mirrored) for 1 set of online redo log files
2 Disks RAID 1 (mirrored) for archive log files
8 Disks RAID 10 (mirrored and Striped) for all data/index/undo/temp files.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14 total disks

My question is -- where would I put the other set of multiplexed redo log files? Hardware mirroring gives me fault tolerance against media corruption, but doesn't protect me against accidental deletion of the logs. I don't want to put the 2nd set on the OS drive because it's mixing sequential (100% read / write) and random access (OS paging, binaries).

I also wanted to better understand how the LGWR and ARC0 processes work. From the Oracle Perf Tuning Guide, the LWGR writes to one member at a time, so it pays to have alternating log groups on 4 disks. We believe the ARC0 process reads only the primary member of the disk, yet the figure 8-1 in the above document shows an arrow from ARC# to both redo members. So how does it really behave? Does it actually read from one or both members? If it only ever writes to the second set and never reads it, where would I put it? Could I even put the second set of online redo's into the data/index/undo/temp set of disks?

I've already been perusing the various AskTom articles and read the Oracle whitepapers (#1and #2) on S.A.M.E. (stripe and mirror everything), and they all make some good suggestions -- it's just with this few disks, I find myself having to make compromises. Any help or suggestions on a better layout would be appreciated.

• We have a great idea for an app, need some advice

my wife and i were joking around about something and she came up with a great idea for an app. we don't know anything about programming or developing so any advice on how to proceed? i guess we need to find an app maker? to propose our idea to without it being stolen. any help would be great, i scrolled thru the first 5 pages of this thread and saw nothing related. thanks.

One option is if there is a similar type of app available via the iTunes app store that you like, contact the developer for the app. Without providing much detail about your app idea, ask the developer if they would contract their services to build your app - along with regular maintenance and app updates, etc. Keep in mind that Apple makes the final decision if an app will be available via the iTunes app store - the overwhelming majority of app submittals are approved, but not all based on Apple's written requirements.

• Rules/Advice for use of FCE/iMovie

Reading through many posts seems I find some general rules of thumb not found elsewhere. Thanks in advance for all comments.
For serious video editing work and creation an external firewire HDD is needed, mainly to avoid dropped frames in either FCE or iMovie (iM). The new 20" iMac and external HDD (with 2 firewire connections, for the input device (DV camcorder or DV/SVHS deck) and to the iMac) should be able to run either FCE/iM.
I just did a 45 min project in iM with no noted dropped frames but likely would in much longer projects if I don't get the external drive?
Audio bit rate. Advice I read for iM is that without 16 bit audio the audio gets out of sync in long projects--does FCE also need 16 instead of 12? Not knowing this need, I've recorded a number of projects (with a DV deck and a DV camcorder) in 12--can I capture to the iMac/external HDD in 16 if I'm playing from a source tape that's 12?
Chapter Markers. Seems there are "Rules for Chapter Markers" that I won't repeat here but suspect they apply to both FCE/iM when used with iDVD. Do those rules apply when you use DVDStudio instead of iDVD? One rule I haven't seen yet is that one should likely not use the apply chapter markers option in iDVD as it could apply a marker that violates the "rules" and cause strange results in the DVD when played, right?
Any other rules or concerns I've missed--perhaps always max out on RAM even if its rather costly? What other basic tips or secrets should I know for editing with these products?
Dale

I'll just cover a couple of your points:
Hard drvies: Internal HDs are actually a better choice, overall, than external ones .... if you have the option to have a separate HD for your Scratch Disc. You should not be storing your meids (your video) on the same disc where FCE lives, in other words, your system disc. Also, space is important; you should never let your scratch disc (your media disc) get too full. I think the reccomendation is something like you should always have 25% of that disc free. So, if you can do that with an internal, go ahead; if not, an external is your only option
RAM: More RAM is good; if you can, I would go up to at least a Gig but this would be more for other apps or running multiple apps at the same time. I ran my G5 on 512mb RAM for a year with few probs (BTW, I'm a pro wedding editor) FCE performance is more determined by Processor speed than RAM anyway
Dropped frames: Lotsa reasons for this but some ways to avoid it is to not have a lot of sequences open at once, lowering your RT settings, not running programs in the background, etc
Audio: As Ian already suggested, the rule for bit rates in FCE is to keep it all the same, so even any music you import should be resampled as a AIFF that matches your sequence ie all 12 bit or all 16 bit. Frankly, I don't know why someone would shoot in 12 bit; it is a lower quality sample rate. Some peeps do it cuz their particular cam allows them to acces other audio tracks in 12 bit; audio tracks you probably wont be able to capture in FCE anyway. At any rate, just keep that sampling rate all the same and you should not have any probs with sync.
Another key point in FCE that when you do your final export, you have to mixdown your audio. From Edit, Select All then go Sequence>Render Only>Mixdown
Chapters: Basic rules for this in FCE is you can't have a chapter marker less than one second away from the beginning or end of your program. I think iMovie has probs if you place a chapter marker right on a transition; FCE is more forgiving but I tend not to do this too much, it doesn't look very neat in playback. When you set your chapter markers, don't forget to select the Chapter Marker option in the submenu and don't erase the <Chapter> heading: that does not show up in your export. When exporting, make sure nothing is selected in your timeline and use Export as Quicktime Movie and select Chapters from the pulldown

There should be no issues. Its designed to work like that. You don't change Apple IDs just because you get a new device.

Is there any chance that the phones can fall out of sync?
Unlikely. But nothing is impossible. Though I don;t see how that would happen. As long as both are signed into the Same Apple ID / iCloud Account they will be N'Sync. (Bad Joke)

If I get a message or buy an app or take a photo on the iPhone 5, how do I get those things onto the iPhone 6?
If you buy an App, you have 2 ways to get it to the iPhone6: If Automatic Downloads is enabled in Settings->iTunes & App Store, it will automatically download to the iPhone 6 when you buy it on the 5 and vice versa if you buy it on the 6, it will download to the 5.
Alternatively, you can simply go to the App Store App->Updates->Purchased and look for the App there and download it. Purchased Apps will not require payment again. i.e They'll be free to download to the iPhone 6 once purchased.
SMS Messages will sync over using Continuity as long as they are on the same Wifi network. Otherwise, restoring the iPhone 5 backup to the iPhone 6 will transfer all messages received up until the backup was made onto the iPhone 6.
Images, can be transferred either through Photo Stream
My Photo Stream FAQ - Apple Support
Or any Cloud service you want such as Dropbox, or One Drive.
mannyace wrote:
Also, something i forgot to ask initially: Should I update the iPhone 5 to iOS 8 first or does that not matter?
If you want the Continuity features as explained above you need to update the iPhone 5 to iOS 8. Otherwise its not all that important.

• Can I use macbook air for ios app development?

I would like to know if i can use macbook air for ios app development or macbook pro is only option?

Just to reinforce what shldr2thewheel says - be very sure what size memory you want if you get a Macbook Air. There is *no* way to change after purchase. My advice is to go for the 4GB option - especially if you want to do app development.
The internal storage (solid state drive) of the Air can be upgraded if required but it will probably be an expensive option. If you don't think the storage will be enough then maybe using a USB connected drive to hold non-essential files is an option.
As to deciding between the Air and Pro you are basically making a decision between portability (Air) and expandability/bigger screens (Pro). What is more important to you?

• App update for an app I never bought

I have both Angry Birds and Angry Birds Space for my iPhone, but never bought the app for my Macbook Pro.
Recently I have gone on to the Mac App Store and found an update for Angry Birds, which I found rather odd.
When I click update - it comes up with the log in box, and a completely different apple ID to mine. I contacted support and got this response:

Oh and I tried putting my own apple ID and hitting update - but that comes up saying "store error".

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. Unfortunately she has been misdirecting folks with that update bug link for far too long.
Candidly, when you see the Apple ID for a stranger appear in the Mac App Store (MAS) on your Mac regarding an update for an app that you haven't bought, it is a notice that you have a pirated app that you got from an outside source. Some trial version or a "free" version is actually a MAS version that someone has cracked and is distributing.
Finding a pirated app
All MAS apps have a MAS receipt in their app bundle. Check any app acquired from the MAS. Right click on the app's icon in your Apps folder and choose Show package contents. In the Contents folder is a _MASReceipt folder and in that folder is the coded MAS receipt. It has the Apple ID of the MAS account that bought/acquired the app from the MAS. It is that receipt that the MAS uses to alert you that an app has an update. There would not be a notice of an update with someone else's Apple ID showing in the MAS on your Mac, if there was not an app with a receipt from this person's account somewhere on your Mac.
Download the free app FindAnyFile (FAF);
http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
This app is easier to use and seems to be more powerful than Spotlight. Open FAF and in the box type _MASReceipt and press Find. It should come up with a list of every app on the Mac with a MAS receipt. Compare the apps with receipts in FAF's list with your purchased apps list in the Mac App Store. The odd app out should be the pirated app.

Apple considers all sales final. There is a link to the developer's site for support on issues that you have with their app. That is where you go for problems with the developer's app.

• Finally made the 800 club!! To app spree or not to app spree...

So I've been waiting for my NFCU payoff to post after my credit card debt was consolidated onto a low interest personal loan. I've been saving up the CreditCheckTotal $1 trial until I noticed the balance was paid so I didn't have to wait for myFico to update (yes, I'm that impatient, you have no idea). Well, 3 days after the statement posted, EQ and EX were finally updated, and I went ahead with the CCT trial and got this: This is a first! I was in the 400s in 2011/2012 when I started on the rebuilding section of the board, so this has been a journey for me. Never would I have imagined I'd been in the 800s, especially with my horrible credit past. Now the dillema, I've been waiting for this so I could app for a few cards I've been wanting, mainly the Slate for the 0% BT offer, and the CSP to pair with my Freedom for rewards and the Amex BCE. Also considering one of the Chase hotel cards.. but now that I have an 800+ score, I'm not sure I want to apply anymore and ruin this great score! Don't know what to do.. decisions, decisions! I've been itching to go on an app spree....

Thanks everyone! Redeyz wrote:
Wonderful achievement! This is somewhat of a lifechanging moment since you've crossed a threshold you probably thought impossible. I have a couple questions though.- How much CC debt did you consolidate through the low interest personal loan?- And what score decrease did you see from getting an installment loan versus the point increase from paying off the CC debt? Was it neutral or more positive paying off the CC balances? I'd say...hold off and let that beautiful score of 805 stick around for a month, and in the meantime evaluate which card or cards best fit your longterm objectives and then apply in a month. Congrats again. The CC consolidation was about 20k @ 6.41% through SoFi and hasn't posted to my credit report. So I'm sure I'll take a small hit when that happens. According to the simulators, which have been mostly accurate, I'll drop 5 points. I'm still waiting for TU to post all of this months credit card payoffs, but they seem to be taking forever so I'm not sure what my score with them will be, but they've been consistent with Experian, so I hope they also put me > 800. The simulators also show that a new CC will drop me to 770.. I wanted to BT a majority of my loan over to the Slate assuming I could get a high SL with them, but something in me just wants to deal with the interest I'm paying on the loan (~$450ish by the time it's paid off) and keep the high score lol. I got in with my Mortgage at 3.375% when I hit the 700s in 2012, So aside from paying off this last consolidation loan, I have no other short term credit goals so technically I have room to play and wouldn't mind getting a few more cards to stiffen my AAOA for years down the road.

• Can't download Wikipedia files for encyclopedia app

I've just bought the encyclopedia for ipad app but every attempt to download the Wikipedia files that make the app work has failed. I followed the instructions -- connected device to a charger, set autolock to never and made sure I was connected to a wifi network -- but to no avail. I keep getting a Connection Error, Unable to download files from the Internet. Which means I have just paid $10.49 for an app I can't use. Anyone else had this experience or can offer some advice on how to resolve it? The app provider's so-called support site is utterly useless.
Robyn

I tried emailing the makers but am not too surprised not to have received an answer. The situation hasn't changed -- I had a vague hope that their server might have been down yesterday -- so I shall be asking for my money back and checking out support pages before I part with money for apps in future. Lesson learned!

You used the data. Verizon can not see what it was sued for. However your phone can see whats apps used the data. go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle. line the dates up with your cycle. then there will be a bar graph below that extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right. after those are extended below that will be a list of apps, there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse
