Advice For Using Open Hotspots

I am extremely careful about online security at home. Looking for advice about how to be safe when using my D'Inc2 at a public hotspot. Links also appreciated.
Here's what I know so far:
Do not sign in to a website without a secure connection (e.g., SSL).
When transferring sensitive data over a non-secured connection (e.g., http, FTP), be sure to encrypt the data first.
Make sure you're connected to the intended network and not an "evil twin".
In any case, limit internet use to casual surfing; nothing sensitive like banking or investment accounts.
Make sure someone is not looking over your shoulder.
I'm particularly interested in preventing someone from connecting to my 'phone e.g., to copy or steal contacts, documents, pictures, etc.
Advice and/or links.

Word might be introducing it's own compression into the workflow (blurring
the image, data loss), and it does not store this type of data efficiently.
Instead of using Word, I would recommend using Irfanview (freeware) to
combine the 256 TIFF files into a single multi-page TIFF file
(View/Multi-page images/Create Multi-page TIFF...). Use the LZW compression
option (no data loss) in Irfanview when combining to keep the file size down
(that's if there are any color or grayscale images, otherwise use CCITT Fax
4 if they are all monochrome).
You can then open and print the multi-page TIFF from Irfanview to Acrobat to
get a complete PDF file. You can experiment with different compression
settings when printing the TIFF to PDF. You can disable image compression
and downsampling when creating the PDF to preserve image quality, but you
will end up with a pretty large file (will people be downloading it from a
web site?). If the images are grayscale or color then try JPEG medium
compression with 200 dpi downsampling as a starting point and see how that
looks. To save time when testing compression settings, just print one
typical page from the project. Then you will know what settings to use when
printing the entire 256 page file to PDF.
Also the multi-page TIFF, like a single page one, would be a pretty good
option as an archive format (and all the pages will be in order in a single
file).

After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external hard drive?
Following Apple advice I used Migration Assistant which crashed new system twice which is why I had to clean install Lion in the first place.
Is there a sure way of doing it?
I have only a few programs that I will have to install myself and that should not be a problem.
I just want my data, music and photos back where I can use them.

Time machine backups. I went to migration assistant a few hours ago and limited my selection to "users", no need for applications, settings and other files.  Stuff started moving over at a fast pace but has now seemed to stall.
I will let it run overnight as there are lots of songs and photos as well as a few movies.
If that does not work, then I will go into TM and try restore. I have restored some things in the past such a mail files and it has worked well.
The Apple fellow at the store told me to go right into TM, he may have had a point. I'll get it eventually.

You will be charged for the entire album. The Gifting feature is not recipient-specific, so it would have no way to know that a particular recipient you might be sending to would already have the album. Why not just gift the songs you know your friend doesn't have?

  • Rules/Advice for use of FCE/iMovie

Reading through many posts seems I find some general rules of thumb not found elsewhere. Thanks in advance for all comments.
For serious video editing work and creation an external firewire HDD is needed, mainly to avoid dropped frames in either FCE or iMovie (iM). The new 20" iMac and external HDD (with 2 firewire connections, for the input device (DV camcorder or DV/SVHS deck) and to the iMac) should be able to run either FCE/iM.
I just did a 45 min project in iM with no noted dropped frames but likely would in much longer projects if I don't get the external drive?
Audio bit rate. Advice I read for iM is that without 16 bit audio the audio gets out of sync in long projects--does FCE also need 16 instead of 12? Not knowing this need, I've recorded a number of projects (with a DV deck and a DV camcorder) in 12--can I capture to the iMac/external HDD in 16 if I'm playing from a source tape that's 12?
Chapter Markers. Seems there are "Rules for Chapter Markers" that I won't repeat here but suspect they apply to both FCE/iM when used with iDVD. Do those rules apply when you use DVDStudio instead of iDVD? One rule I haven't seen yet is that one should likely not use the apply chapter markers option in iDVD as it could apply a marker that violates the "rules" and cause strange results in the DVD when played, right?
Any other rules or concerns I've missed--perhaps always max out on RAM even if its rather costly? What other basic tips or secrets should I know for editing with these products?
    Dale

I'll just cover a couple of your points:
Hard drvies: Internal HDs are actually a better choice, overall, than external ones .... if you have the option to have a separate HD for your Scratch Disc. You should not be storing your meids (your video) on the same disc where FCE lives, in other words, your system disc. Also, space is important; you should never let your scratch disc (your media disc) get too full. I think the reccomendation is something like you should always have 25% of that disc free. So, if you can do that with an internal, go ahead; if not, an external is your only option
RAM: More RAM is good; if you can, I would go up to at least a Gig but this would be more for other apps or running multiple apps at the same time. I ran my G5 on 512mb RAM for a year with few probs (BTW, I'm a pro wedding editor) FCE performance is more determined by Processor speed than RAM anyway
Dropped frames: Lotsa reasons for this but some ways to avoid it is to not have a lot of sequences open at once, lowering your RT settings, not running programs in the background, etc
Audio: As Ian already suggested, the rule for bit rates in FCE is to keep it all the same, so even any music you import should be resampled as a AIFF that matches your sequence ie all 12 bit or all 16 bit. Frankly, I don't know why someone would shoot in 12 bit; it is a lower quality sample rate. Some peeps do it cuz their particular cam allows them to acces other audio tracks in 12 bit; audio tracks you probably wont be able to capture in FCE anyway. At any rate, just keep that sampling rate all the same and you should not have any probs with sync.
Another key point in FCE that when you do your final export, you have to mixdown your audio. From Edit, Select All then go Sequence>Render Only>Mixdown
Chapters: Basic rules for this in FCE is you can't have a chapter marker less than one second away from the beginning or end of your program. I think iMovie has probs if you place a chapter marker right on a transition; FCE is more forgiving but I tend not to do this too much, it doesn't look very neat in playback. When you set your chapter markers, don't forget to select the Chapter Marker option in the submenu and don't erase the <Chapter> heading: that does not show up in your export. When exporting, make sure nothing is selected in your timeline and use Export as Quicktime Movie and select Chapters from the pulldown

  • Advice for using  Acrobat/PDF  to preserve 110-year-old book

I am a volunteer on a project for our historical society. The only known copy of a rare book from the early 1890's was found containing valuable historical and genealogical data (10,000 names which we indexed) plus woodcut portrait images. It will be an extremely important and popular resource if we can get it into a universal format such as PDF. I really need EXPERT advice.
The book itself is deteriorating, and literally crumbling. Each page was scanned (and can't be re-scanned due to its fragility) and the resulting tiff images were repaired to replace the missing pieces using the Paint program, a painstaking process taking hours per page. (About 200 kb each)
We have been trying to combine the 256 full-page tiff images by pasting them into MSWord documents containing 20 of the page images each, and then making PDFs of each 20-page document.
The tools we have available are: Acrobat 4.0 on my home computer and Acrobat Standard 6.0 on my work computer, Word 2003 and Word 2000, Paint, Microsoft Picture Editor and Microsoft Picture Manager.
I want to be sure the many hundreds of hours of work that has gone into this so far will not be lost for the future. What can I do to ensure a file that can be read on-screen, can be printed for people asking for copies, and will be readable into the future? I see that 8.0 is now the standard. Am I risking that no one will be able to open these in the future using 4.0 or 6.0?
The PDF documents made with the 4.0 Acrobat have the nicest, clearest print images while the 6.0 appear smeary in print but OK on screen. We have tried all types of different settings for Acrobat 6.0 yet the results have all been the same - nothing we do seems to change the appearance but the file size increases.
Can someone who really knows the workings of these programs please give me some advice on what settings to use to optimize the results and preserve our work for the future? If you or someone you know can talk an amateur thru this, it would be a great service. Thanks in advance!

1 Year Limited Parts & Labor Warranty
Email and fax support M-F from 9am-6pm EST

Here are the major failings of that "workstation":
    1) The power supply is much too weak to handle an upgrade to a GTX 570. Heck, that PSU might not have been capable of actually handling even its claimed 350W - but more like 200W. As such, it's barely capable of handling even that "workstation"'s base configuration with integrated Intel HD 2000 graphics. You will definitely need a new power supply (at least 550W, but preferably 750W to 850W) right away before you can even upgrade the graphics card at all.
    2) That PC has only one hard disk. Adobe requires a minimum of at least one additional hard disk (preferably two or more additional disks) in order to run Premiere Pro acceptably well.
    3) Change out the H67 motherboard for a Z68 motherboard. H67 cannot overclock the "limited-overclockable" i7-2600 CPU at all. And even with a Z68 motherboard, the fastest that you can run that non-K i7-2600 would be 3.9GHz.
    4) As you stated, that small case will not be enough. You will need a much bigger case to handle the load from Premiere Pro plus all of the hardware upgrades that I'm suggesting.
Also, keep in mind that the company only offers "lifetime" technical support if you don't tinker with the PC's innards at all - not even a minor hardware upgrade or only for a vendor-approved hardware upgrade such as RAM. Once you open that case for a non-vendor-approved hardware upgrade (e.g. an upgraded power supply, an upgraded GPU or upgraded cooling), you will no longer have technical support from that company that you're getting the PC from.
As currently equipped, that system will run about 25 to 30 times slower than a fast PC. Look at payal's 622-second result running 5.0.3 on the PPBM5 results list, with the same CPU, chipset and integrated graphics as your system: It is already more than 12 times slower (in terms of the Relative Performance Index) than a fast system - and that system is already running two disks. With only one disk for absolutely everything - the OS, media, projects, previews, cache and exports - it would be much slower than even that because SATA is only a half-duplex interface, not a full-duplex interface. As a half-duplex interface, SATA can only deliver data transfers in one direction at a time. However, video editing programs like PPro require simultaneous reads and writes. This means that the single disk must wait for data transfers in a given direction to be completed before any data starts transferring in the opposite direction.

  • Nead some advice for using DDE icons

    Hello everyone,
1°)I am using DDE in my programm. I need to get and send many information to the instrument I am communicationg with. I would like to know if have to use the DDE start, check, or poke icons for each piece of info I want to get? Because that takes a lot of space in my prorgam. Is there any other way?
2°) I am also looking for some DDE application notes. Don't seem to able to find any on the NI web site...any idea?
    Any help would be great,
    regards,
    David

Actually, the best place for info on the DDE VIs is Microsoft's website. The functions within LV are apparently very simple wrappers around the Windows function calls so you follow the basic procedural flow in MS's docs and it should work.
Typically you have to open a session specifying a "service" and "topic", you can then "request" (read) or "poke" (write) "items".
And yes, you typically have to read or write one value at a time. It all depends on the "items" that the DDE service you're accessing implements.

  • Advice for using the iCloud Photo Library

    iCloud Photo Library!
I've been waiting for this feature to arrive since June when it was rolled out during the WWDC.
Now that's here can anyone share some advice on the best possible way to go about using it?
I have 9,239 pictures in 1,196 events in my iPhoto Library.  (Tons & Tons of time on editing, geo-tagging, naming faces, Smart Folders, etc.)
I would like to push them up to iCloud Photo Library.  I also have 95 home videos (stored in iTunes) that I would like to push up their as well.
However it doesn't appear that I can do that on either of my Macs until 2015'.
I see where I can now do that with iOS 8.1 with an iOS device.
What advice can anyone give me as far what they think I should do?
Should I try to wipe out all data off one of my iOS devices, then load pictures on it, turn on iCloud Photo Library within settings, let it upload, then turn it back off so I can take the videos a few at a time (turning the feature on and then back off) until I get everything uploaded?
Should I wait until the Mac version is available next year?
Or is there any other way??

If you're running Yosemite, wait for the Photos app to be introduced next year.  While specifics haven't been announced, I believe it sill provide a way to migrate your iPhoto library to iCloud Photo Library.

  • Advice for using patterns

    Hello all,
I need suggestions from you all regarding the usage of bridge pattern in my problem. My xml file contains an element which when read gives the datatype like varchar , longint. etc..... for each of these i want to give them java types. Like in place for varchar i want to use string. my java class file uses these many times. so i want to create another class where all these mappings will be present. These mappings will be 2 dimentional.... like i should be able to define my datatype also according to defferent databases like db2, oracle etc.
These mappings will help me reduce redundancy in my java code for reading the types .... coz otherwise there will be too many if else statements to replace each datatype name with my defined string.
i want to use bridge pattern for this. please someone help me to implement it for my above problem.
    thanks

i want to use bridge pattern for this. please someone
help me to implement it for my above problem. What kind of help do you need? It strikes me a little unusual that you would think you want or need the bridge pattern without knowing how to implement it. Generally, you'd learn a pattern first, then recognize a place whereby you could apply its principles, not the other way around...

  • Help!!! Legal advice for using iTunes music as a DJ in the UK

Hi. I work as a DJ and would like to use music I have purchased from iTunes in a club where all licences (PPL & MCPS) are paid. Can I get permission or pay a fee that allows me to do this legally? And if so how do I go about this?
    Please help!!!
    Silv

DJ in the UK, Typically the way that it works here in the United States clubs pay royalties to ASCAP, BMI etc.... and the Governing body is the RIAA, The Club usually purchases or Pays the DJ in which the Licensing fees are paid. To the best of my understanding Apple abides by domestic and international laws that prevail with regard to copyright and royalties ie. RIAA and other governing agencies internationally.
To the best of my understanding after reading Apples TOA you are in no way prohibited from playing that music you legally purchased for a Public Audience as long as local applicable Laws and Licensing fees which by the way are not dictated by Apple, are paid. Apple is a retailer not a governing body. The terms of the sale, TOS or TOA terms of agreement from the Apple store are intended to protect Apple from any unwarranted legal actions. However, since Apple is a private for profit company and not a Governing Institution. For the laws in your area I would contact a Barrister familiar with Copyright and Royalties similar to the RIAA, Ascap and BMI here in the U.S.A.

  • Need advice for using Tempory tables

    Hi,
I am soort of expert in SQL programming using MS SQL and SYBASE. But I am new in ORACLE.
In SQL SERVER, using tempory tables are very simple. But it seems very different in ORACLE.
    1. Can I use create several different temp tables in a stored procedure?
    2. Dose the temp table has to be named as Temp_tablename?
    3. After executing the stored procedure, will those temp tables disappear automnatically? Should I manually clean them up?
Thank you for help in advance.
    Karl

    1. Yes. You need to use Dynamic SQL within your PL/SQL code to issue any DDL command.
    2. You can name those temp tables whatever name you want.
    3. You need to issue "DROP table XXX" command to remove those temp tables. Why not use PL/SQL table within you PL/SQL code since PL/SQL is a memory construct and it will only exist during the run time of your PL/SQL code.

  • Hardware Advice for measuring sound

    Hello,
My masters project has taken a turn and now I am using the speed of sound.
There are two arguments that have arisen. One from my supervisor who says that LabVIEW
is used in industry and that it is a real-time environment, meaning I would be
able to measure the time taken for sound to travel x metres (minimum 0.5m and 7m
    maximum).
On the other hand the Labview guru on
campus has suggested that using a USB interface, and the fact that Windows XP
is not a real time environment would not return true times and there are other priorities
that Windows has to handle firs giving erroneous times.
Which argument is true, and which solution should I take.
Firstly, should I using a microcontroller with dedicated timers to time the
sound by starting a counter at 1.2MHz and take start value and finish value and
then working backwards to get the time, with the obvious hard part of setting
up communications with Labview through serial.
Or should I purchase some sort of serial/USB interface for Labview that would
be able to handle the job. If this option is best suited, are there any recommendations
for hardware? I'm using the SCB-68 which can only be used on a desktop
computer. I need something that is either Serial or USB as the final product
    will be controller via laptop.
    Cheers

  • "This drive is not ready for use; it's door may be open ..."

    Hi.
I recently updated to itunes 7, and then had an issue with a corrupt file on the i-pod (which resulted in chkdsk hanging itself at 27%, always). So I restored the i-pod and that took care of that - chkdsk now says it's fine.
However - it is also empty. My machine and i-tunes recognize it fine upon start-up; however, a short while into a full synch to get my library back on the i-pod, I invariably get the following error message:
"The drive is not ready for use; it's door may be open. Please check drive \Device\Harddisk\DR 3 and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed." The message comes with the options "cancel, ignore and continue", yet the latter two don't make a difference, and even if I choose cancel, itunes keeps trying until it eventually crashes.
This always happens after itunes has synchronized about 1.13 GB (out of 18.55 available).
As far as I can tell, both my system and the iPod are up to date (itunes and windows update say so, anyway). E: is unequivocally and exclusively allocated to the i-pod; changing the settings from "optimize for quick removal" to "optimize for performance" has made no discernible difference.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hullo ...
let me follow up on this again. I've followed your advice, de-installed spybot, no change. I looked through the windows support help base, nothing. While trying out different things, I started getting a "delayed write failed" message, and I did some things they suggested (including adjusting the registry - me, adjusting the registry!)and it went away, and now all I get is the "open door" message again.
That is: everything works absolutely fine, I plug in the i-pod (latest version i-tunes and i-pod is up to date), it's recognized instantly by the explorer as well as i-tunes. I've run all scans you can possibly run on it, and it is fine (no corrupt files, nothing). I've restored it twice through i-tunes, twice through the explorer. I've changed the drive letter.
It starts the synch fine (it's still almost empty after the last restore), but at some point, I get the error message. Interestingly enough, *up to* that point, it'll synch fine - I can disconnect it and play on it whatever's been synched thus far. I can also modify my i-tunes settings and preferences, all of which i-tunes will recognize and adhere to. It is just unwilling to put more than 1GB of stuff onto my 20GB i-pod.
Something I've noticed is that it is sometimes indicating apparently faulty charges in the beginning (though that is quickly corrected once the synch starts), as in, it'll recognize a certain amount of audio files, but also claim a random amount of "other" files, which should not be there (apart from the 30MB or so of genuine i-pod software).
Anyhow. I haven't seen any solutions to this on the forums or in the apple help files, but people appear to be having this problem still. Any ideas or input would be very much appreciated ...
    Thanks.

    Thanks.
