Advice Needed - Escalating Legria HF20/HF200 Compatibility Issues

I have tried to alert Apple Australia of the compatibility issues between the Legria HF20/HF200 and iMovie 11 now that this camcorder has been added to the Apple PAL supported camcorders list for iLife 11. There has been many posts on this compatibility issue on this Forum.
They are arguing that because the list doesn’t specifically mention the term ‘Legria’ in front of the HF20/HF200 that there is no issue. I have tried unsuccessfully to explain that there is only one version of the PAL HF20/HF200 and that is the Legria HF20/HF200, and that therefore the list must be referring to this camcorder.
Unfortunately, they aren’t accepting this view. Therefore, could somebody please advise how I can escalate this further. My motivation for doing this is purely to assist other users.
PS: I hope that this post doesn’t get deleted like the previous much longer post that I drafted. I am doing this to help others. I am not trying to cause trouble.

I also have problems with my canon legria hfr 106, which is on the supported list.
I recently discovered that I can switch the camera settings so that it records in PF25. I don´t understand the actual difference between 50i and PF25, but I tested shooting in PF25, and when I import at full original size, there are no interlacing issues. That´s a good start : - )
I´m trying now to burn with the 1080p preset using toast (haven´t had the chance to look at the result yet).
I see in your post that you loose half the resolution if you apply scaling effects. What exactly does this mean? Is it for example if you use picture in picture, Ken Burns and other effects that change the size of the clip? Does the entire project loose half the resolution, or just the clip where the effect is applied? Im sorry if this is a newbie question, but I´m not very technical.

  • WARNING - Compatibility of Canon Legria HF20 / HF200 with iMovie 11

I just noticed that the Canon Legria HF20/HF200 (PAL) is now included in list of supported camcorders for iMovie 11. Refer link below:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US
Previously, for iMovie 09, only the NTSC Version of the camcorder (which is referred to as the Vixia HF20/HF200) was listed as compatible. I suspected that this was due to the quirky issue that I once again will repeat below.
+With the PAL version, iMovie 09 incorrectly tags the 50i content as being progressive, and the 25p content as being interlaced. In contrast, with the NTSC version, iMovie apparently correctly identifies the 60i content as being interlaced and the 30p content as being progressive.+
+This results in the following outcomes:+
    +For 50i content:+
+- When the 50i content is previewed in iMovie, it shows the horizontal combing effect on fast motion content as iMovie thinks that it is progressive and doesn’t do its normal adjustments (as it does for the Vixia version) when displaying interlaced footage.+
+- If you play the AIC file in Quicktime X, the interlacing lines also are visible, as Quicktime doesn’t know that it is interlaced footage.+
+- When the 50i content is exported from iMovie, the progressive tag remains on the file. Therefore, if the footage is played in Quicktime X the horizontal combing effect remains, as Quicktime once again doesn’t know that it is interlaced footage.+
+- When the ‘Deinterlace Source Video’ option is selected when exporting from iMovie using 'Export using Quicktime', the footage doesn’t get deinterlaced as iMovie identifies the footage as being progressive.+
    +For 25p content:+
+- When 25p content is displayed in iMovie, it appears to display properly. It also displays properly if exported from iMovie and viewed in Quicktime X, despite the fact that it is incorrectly tagged as being interlaced.+
+- However, an issue arises with the 25p content if a special effect is applied within iMovie that alters frame size (ie. Stabilize, PIP, Crop, Ken Burns effect, Wipes, Ripple, Zoom etc). These special effects are referred to as scaling effects. Normally, if scaling effects are applied to interlaced 1080 footage, iMovie deinterlaces the content from 1080i to 540p. This has been a deliberate feature in iMovie since iMovie 09 (Version 8.0.0) to avoid scaling artifacts associated with interlaced footage when a scaling effect has been applied.+
+- In relation to progressive content, iMovie doesn’t normally make any adjustment to the resolution when scaling effects are applied as scaling artifacts aren’t an issue for progressive content. However, as a consequence of iMovie incorrectly tagging the 25p content as being interlaced, iMovie will treat the footage as interlaced footage when special effects are applied, and unnecessarily reduce the resolution from 1080 to 540. Obviously, this is a bad outcome as it means that the resolution is unnecessarily reduced by half.+
I haven't had the opportunity to test iMovie 11, but I just wanted to post a warning to anyone that may be influenced by the official list of supported camcorders that they should confirm whether this issue has been resolved in iMovie 11 before they purchase the camcorder.
As I not intending to use iMovie going forward (as I can't look past the lack of native AVCHD editing) it would be great if someone else who own this camcorder could confirm whether this issue has been resolved in iMovie 11. If the problem remains, the issue should really be highlighted to Apple, and the camcorder removed from the list.

A warning doesn't solve the problem, but using a software utility can.
This is the cause of the problem:
"With the PAL version, iMovie 09 incorrectly tags the 50i content as being progressive, and the 25p content as being interlaced. In contrast, with the NTSC version, iMovie correctly identifies the 60i content as being interlaced and the 30p content as being progressive."
When iMovie detects interlaced video it deinterlaces it causing a loss of vertical resolution. (BAD) But, deinterlaced video can have effects that "scale" video applied without ugly artifacts. (GOOD)
When iMovie detects progressive video it does NOT deinterlace video. (GOOD) And, because it IS progressive video, scaling FX do not cause ugly artifacts. (GOOD)
So the best solution is to shoot 30p. iMovie will detect progressive video and NOT deinterlace video. (GOOD) And, because it IS progressive video, scaling FX do not cause ugly artifacts. (GOOD)
The next best solution is to shoot 60i and use NO scaling FX.
The next best solution is to shoot 60i and use "iMakeFullHD" to re-tag 60i as 30p. Now iMovie will not deinterlace causing a loss in vertical resolution, but you MAY still see artifacts when you use scaling FX.
For PAL shooters, you can shoot 50i which iMovie will think is 25p and so will not deinterlace causing a loss in vertical resolution, but you MAY still see artifacts when you use scaling FX.
Or, you can use "iMakeFullHD" to tag as 50i -- which iMovie will deinterlace, causing a loss of vertical resolution but also preventing any artifacts.
However, the best solution is to shoot 25p and then use "iMakeFullHD" to tag as 25p. When iMovie detects progressive video it does NOT deinterlace video. (GOOD) And, because it IS progressive video, scaling FX do not cause ugly artifacts. (GOOD)
So there is a solution for both NTSC and PAL shooters -- shoot progressive. PAL users, however, must use "iMakeFullHD" to tag as 25p.
If you have already shot 60i, use "iMakeFullHD" to re-tag as 30p and be careful in your use of scaling FX.
Follow this link to learn more:
    http://home.mindspring.com/~d-v-c/
The solutions are SO simple IMHO it would be a shame to give up.
PS: you should use "iMakeFullHD" to re-tag ALL interlace (50i/60i) video as progressive so iMovie will not deinterlace your video! It's not just for the Canon Legria HF20 / HF200.

  • Need help with Snow Leopard compatibility issue

We have a new iMac in (with Snow Leopard) and have loaded all our programs. Due to budgets, we have not made the jump to CS4 and are still on CS3 (waiting for 5). We work in an InDesign/InCopy workflow.
In launching InDesign on the MAc with Snow Leopard, we have noticed that the assignment folders are nonexistant and within the program you can't even open an assignment window. When you reopen on a system without Snow Leopard, the individual assignments are there, but the program states it can't find the main assignment, so it's cancelling out the assignments if opened on the Snow Leopard unit.
Does anyone have any info on compatibility issues with Indesign CS3 and Snow Leopard? My tech guy found nothing on this before we ordered the new system.

First things first. CS5 was announced today and preorders are being accepted.
I believe if you upgrade to CS4 you'll get a free copy of CS5. This is important because if you're upgrading a suite, tiered pricing makes CS3 to CS4 $200 less than waiting til CS5 comes out.
That out of the way, is everyone fully patched to CS3 5.0.4? Is Snow Leopard fully updated to 10.6.3? Do you have full read/write permission on the server?

  • Compatibility Issues with CS2 and Windows 2000 XP??? This is supposed to be THE one operating system CS2 DOES WORK ON? Can someone help - I really need my CS2 back! Thanks.

HELP! Years ago - SEVEN to be exact- I PURCHASED Adobe CS2 and used it extensively. Then I was in an accident that took five years to recover from. After my recovery I tried to get back to using my Adobe products only to find that Adobe was discouraging use of CS2 and since I OWN a LICENSE and that was the LAST version I used I wanted to begin again with a version I am familiar with. Many months later, apparently I wasn't the only one who wanted to KEEP USING CS2 and now Adobe has made it possible to download this version for PC and MAC, BUT due to OS compatibility issues Adobe continues to discourage downloading and use. HERE'S THE THING: I have the SAME SYSTEM running the SAME OS as when I first PURCHASED IT. I have downloaded the EXACT SAME VERSION of CS2. It installs fine. But I cannot OPEN the application and the troubleshooter reports there are "COMPATIBILITY ISSUES". WHY?!?!?!?!?
I'm on a PC running Windows 2000 XP. I OWN a LICENSE for Adobe CS2 and it used to run on this very same machine. I had to re-format my system two years ago so it has much more free space but when I  try to OPEN the application it won't run. When I run the Windows Troubleshooter it reports system compatibility issues?! Can anyone advise me what to try now??? Thank you.

Yes, I have. My system was completely cleaned of everything and I'm just now RE-INSTALLING CS2 for Windows2000 XP from the Adobe site that gives you versions to select for your OS. I have successfully downloaded disks 1,2 and 3 and I can INSTALL disks 1 and 2, but it FAILS at disk 3. I REALLY need to resolve this today because I need to submit some work by tomorrow and the troubleshooting isn't helping!
Can you advise anything else . . . anyone? Thank you!

For MS Visio (any version) only the appropriate version of Acrobat *PRO* provides PDFMaker for Visio.
For Visio 2013 specifically you must have Acrobat XI Pro (updated to at least 11.0.1).

  • Issue with Canon Legria HF20 and iMovie 09

I am having an issue with using the Canon Legria HF20 (which is the PAL version of the Canon Vixia HF20) with iMovie 09, and I am trying to confirm whether other people experience the issue.
I recently purchased the video camera, and while I am having no issues shooting in 25p, I am having an issue with 50i. When I shoot in 50i and import into iMovie at 'Full-Original Size" the footage displays with a horizontal interlaced combing effect, whereby if the camera moves left or right, horizontal lines appear, which causes the edges of things to look jagged. This is difficult to see in the small preview box, but is easy to see if you preview in full screen. I have been told that this shouldn’t occur as iMovie should recognise that the footage is interlaced and adjust the footage when being previewed (thanks Steve Mullen for confirming that). Again, there is no problem with shooting in 25p.
This link has an example I found on the internet of what I am seeing: http://media.photobucket.com/image/deinterlace%20video/jlatenight/deinterlace.jp g
Also, when I export the footage from iMovie using 'Export using Quicktime' at either 1080i or 720p, the footage remains interlaced even though I have selected 'Deinterlace Source Video'
So far I have been unable to get to the bottom of this issue. I have spoken to Apple and they are saying that while the Canon Vixia HF20 (NTSC Version) is on the official list of cameras supported by iMovie, the Canon Legria (PAL Version) isn’t, although they couldn’t say whether this could have something to do with the issue I am having.
Therefore, I was wondering if anyone could confirm whether they have experienced this issue. Can you please confirm that you are using the Legria version and not the Vixia version of the Camera.
I would really appreciate your help.

Well, it seems to me that it looks the same. I am not an expert here, but it occurs to me that you can either shoot in 25p or de-interlace it from 50i. I think it gives the same quality but the latter is more complicated unless you have the Final Cut.
Here I got an intersting link on that matter:

I have just purchased and installed a new Airport extreme base station but now the Airport Utility cannot see my old Airport Express. Are their compatibility issues and do I need to purchase a new Express?

When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features.

  • Canon Legria HF20 - Compatibility with iMovie

I have just ordered a Canon Legria HF20 camcorder. However, I have a concern.
I just checked Apple's offical list of iMovie 09 compatible camcorders, and the PAL version isn't listed as a compatible camcorder. However, the NTSC version is, which is called the Cannon Vixia HF20. I am not sure if the reason why the PAL version isn't listed is just because they haven't got around to testing it.
Can anyone confirm whether the HF20 works with iMovie? Am I safe to assume that if the NTSC version is compatible, then the PAL version will also be compatible

  • Bootcamp Driver Set-up won't start/work - compatibility issue?

I have a feeling this has to do with the hardware/software compatibility issue that keeps surfacing. I've gone through quite a few other threads but have yet to find something enough like this. Where as many are experiencing blue screens during set-up, I can't even get that far...
I have a typical Macbook (the 13', 2.16 GHz Intel dual core). I bought it a couple months before Leopard came out (*cursing under breath*). That means this computer is about a year old. Originally, I used the Bootcamp Beta and everything went without a hitch. Uninstalled all that so I could install Leopard which I did back in... June I think. Now I need Windows back for some Windows-specific programs but I can't install these Bootcamp drivers.
So. 1 year-old laptop with 10.4.9 installation discs. Copy of Leopard purchased in or around June. I pop in the Leopard Disc with Windows open and... NOTHING happens. AT all. Tries to boot up the disc but, after several tries, ejects it.
Pulling out those old (Tiger installation) discs won't help because they won't have any drivers on them.
    Any advice?
    P.S. Yes, it's Windows XP, SP2

Can File Manager see files on the Leopard disc? If so, double click setup.exe. Also see [this.|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1855?viewlocale=en_US].

  • K9A2 plat hardware, CPU monitoring-advice needed please

    Hi,
It seems that the MSI's "dualcore center" does not accurately displays CPU temp, normally it shows CPU temp. at lower than room temp.
Also sometimes dual-core-center freeze/hangup other programs as well.
With that being said,  I am looking for advice/recommendation as to what program to use to monitor CPU temps; something that would show in the task bar, show current temp., and does not hog up lot of resources.
    thanks

Oh yes... got to pay more attention to the spell checker.
Ironic.... I come here for technical advice and I get a lesson in spelling.    thanks Frankenputer. Furthermore ironic the fact is that I claim that I am not obsessed, yet I keep coming back here too read /learn more. May be it is not an obsession but an addiction. I am just a newbie here, some of you have post count  above 1K. Hee-heeee..
Fredric, you mention bios is the most accurate, but you can't access it during a game play or application use.
The only time I see bios info is when I boot. (yes boot  no need to correct.... boot=  as in pressing the power "ON" button to begin PC operation) it would not be a good monitoring tool.
    Hans
There is room , I am just not satisfied the way it is mounted. A huge, heavy heatsink hanging out to the side which is supported by the MOBO, now you hang another object(fan) on the heatsink; just like hanging weight on the end of a lever. Then you spin up the  fan and let it vibrate, these cheap fans not balanced as they should be.  An air tunnel or duct system would be a much better way to bring airflow to a heat sink, better than hanging a fan on it.
Normal way  of mounting works of course. I am just testing to see if there is a better way. I am using a fan, just mounting it elsewhere.
Products engineered certain way because size, cost, or compatibility issues. Not necessarily to be most efficient.
My corsair TX750 PSU a good example.  A fan is mounted inside; size and compability issue.
So the engineers put a 140 mm fan on the bottom(inside),  blocked half of its airflow with a plastic shield so air is moved to the back, though and out.
I removed the fan and the airflow blocking plastic piece, mounted fan on outside of  PSU. Airflow has nearly doubled. I am sure it runs cooler too.  A slight mod to the case was necessary. Now I sleep better at night  (kiddding)
This PSU (unmodified) in an Antec P182 case barely moved any air through it. I ended up selling the the antec 182.

  • Keynotes - compatability issues?

Hi, I hope someone can help or advice.
I am looking into possibly purchasing iWorks so that I can use Keynotes. At the moment, I use a Windows PC at work and a Mac at home. My concerns are compatability issues, so if any someone/s can answer the following questions I would be greatly appreciative:
If I produce a Keynotes presentation on my Mac, can I auto-run as a presentation on a Windows computer easily? (i.e. just run it, not edit it....etc).
Also can I link files to the presentation that can then be clicked within the slide to open in a seperate window i.e. a pdf document, and if so does this close or reduce the presentation itself?
Also I read online that Keynotes can make quite a good interactive shows that 5hit on Powerpoint as far as visuals, i.e. I need to produce an interactive CD,that will autorun on any pc/mac without issue and run a show that lists documents in pdf format that the viewer can click to view without the presentation disappearing, i.e. presenation still remains an active window behind, can this be done in keynotes, or does anyone know of any other mac or windows application that does this kind of thing?
Not sure if the above makes sense, sorry but it's difficult to explain.
Hope someone can help me, I am real keen to get Keynotes, but if it has issues with transferrring onto PC, then there is no point!

    Bill,
Thanks for the help, it is greatly appreciated.

  • ILife 08 and iMovie 06 compatibility issues?

Sorry if any of this has already been covered in other threads...
Has anyone had a chance to thoroughly test the 6.04 version of iMovie (download version if you install iLife 08) and know what compatibility issues there are?
I.E. How well does iPhoto 08 play with iMovie 06, or iMovie 06 with iDVD 08. Are the third party plugins problematic with v6.04?
From what I saw at the Apple store, iPhoto08 and iDVD08 would be the only apps that I would really want since iMovie08 seems to be a step backwards and iWeb is still lacking in everything that I wanted improved. But I don't want to waste the money to discover all sorts of "gotchas" with trying to get iMovie06 to play nice with the rest of iLife08...
Also, has anyone done an install excluding iMovie08 entirely? Do you still need to download 6.04 if installed this way? Are there any pitfalls?
This is like Deja vu or something...When iLife06 first came out, I installed everything but iMovie and stuck with iMovie05 for a long time cause of all the bugs and how long it took to get the third party plugins working...

Of all the things for people to moan about with iMovie '08, the real unfortunate thing is it's inability to import effects, etc. (essentially your completed movie) from iMovie HD. One could somewhat forgive Apple for this debacle, if only it played nice with iMovie HD. Then it could be everything it's supporters say it is, i.e. "a different app," "a simple app for simpletons in a hurry" (although I find it's lack of tools and compatibility issues more difficult to manage).
...and a lot of us feel like this is the thing we're going to be stuck with going forward.
I keep thinking that something else is going to happen, because this can't be right. I think this diver/video engineer who came up with this concept is suffering from the bends.
Apple doesn't need the money, (as in making us buy Final Cut Pro for decent video editing), trust me, so I don't understand why it would take the PR hit.
iMovie '08 spoofs are already on YouTube, etc.

  • Boot Camp / Windows 8.1 64-bit / Driver compatibility issues

    Hi everyone,
I have been struggling to install Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit version through Boot Camp on my MacBook Air 13 inch mid-2012 for a few days and I have finally decided to give up and write this thread to see if anyone has encountered the same problems as I have and if they've found a solution.
    What I've tried so far:
    1. First attempt
         a. Download the ISO from Microsoft (We are a Microsoft Partner and have access to internal use licences of Windows 8.1).
         b. Use the Boot Camp utility to create a bootable USB drive, download the latest Boot Camp drivers and partition my SSD drive.
Issue: Upon rebooting, I got the "No bootable device found" error message. I still tried to boot on the USB drive, which I was able to, but           when installing Windows, I was unable to format the partition created by the Boot Camp utility as it contained a "MBR partition table"           instead of a GPT.
    2. Second attempt
         a. I searched the Internet about the error message about the MBR partition table.
         b. The solution I found was to format the partition created by the Boot Camp utility as "Free space".
         c. I was then able to start Windows installation by formatting the partition I wanted to allot it to through the Windows installation process.
Issue: The installation went smoothly until my computer rebooted the first time and the "Peripherals preparation" step (sorry about the           approximate translation, I'm used to the French version of it) got stuck at 10% and was brutally followed by a black screen. Forcing the           computer to restart would show the Windows logo and go straight back to the black screen situation...
    3. Third attempt
         a. I decided to create a bootable Windows installation USB drive using UNetBootin utility and creating a "Free space" partition through Disk      Utility on which to install Windows.
         b. I then booted on the USB Drive and was able to install Windows properly.
         c. I donwloaded the set of Boot Camp drivers through Apple's wesbsite corresponding to my MacBook Air model.
Issue: Somehow, the graphics driver installed by Boot Camp made my system crash as I got a black screen when it tried to install. Even           without doing anything and having Windows try to install the right driver by itself, I got a black screen and an unusable installation of           Windows 8.1.
What am I missing here? Why isn't the Boot Camp utility working when it should be so easy? Is there a compatibility issue of my graphics driver (Intel HD Graphics 4000) with Windows running under Boot Camp?
Thanks in advance for your help. I'm in desperate need of a solution as I don't want to go back to using virtualisation softwares such as Parallels Desktop, VMWare, etc. though they work just fine...
    Best regards,
    Alex

    1. Your MBA does not support EFI/Free Space method.
    2. You need to ensure that your USB is a USB2 device.
    3. The MBR should be checked, because there are known cases where BCA fails to create the MBR.
