Advice needed on getting 2-G4s up to speed

Here's my dilema; I have 2 G4s, (1)-Dual 1Ghz MDD and (2)-867Mhz QS. Both have the original Airport cards(slow speed) installed and I have a Graphite Base Station. I'd like to get both of these machines up to the current wireless speeds if possible. The only catch is the Dual 1Ghz MDD's built-in ethernet port is being used/hooked up. I'll need a box to add atleast one additional port.
I would like to stay wireless with both G4s as only the MDD is close to the cable modem.
What do I need to do/purchase to make this happen???

Sounds like what you want is a multi-port hub. You can get 4-port, 10-port and more, and you can stack them as well.
I have a set-up like you describe you want:
A dual 1.25GHz G4 MDD and a G4 laptop connected via an Airport (Snow) basestation to a 12-port 3Com SuperStacker II hub. A second dual 867MHz G4 MDD is connected to the hub via the builtin ethernet port. Other machines are also connected to the hug via their ethernet ports.
The Airport basestation and DSL modem are also connected via CAT5 cable to the hub.
As Rodney points out in his post, the rate-limiting connection speed to the internet is really the service limits from your ISP. The 802.11b protocol is 11Mbps, while T1 service is 1-2Mbps and T3 is 3Mbps.
You can find 3Com hubs and switches (for example) here . This isn't a product endorsement, just an example of the sort of networking hardware I'm talking about.
The nice thing about a hub/switch is you can also plug in your printers to it and have the machines connecting, via Airport, find the machines in another part of the house. Thereby avoiding use of a separate wireless print server basestation.

No, you are not limited to Apple. Other routers exists - Here are some reviews. You can find others in a Google Search.
Regarding Wi-Fi (hot spots). Yes, as you have noticed, more and more public places have wireless connections. Some are secured, i.e. require a password to access. Others are not - voluntary or involuntary.
To access a network, your Airport cards needs to be "on" - to enable, go to your menu bar, and click the Wireless icon (inverted striped fan). When the menu appears, make sure Airport is set to "on". If a "wi-fi" network is present, your machine automatically connects to it (if there are multiple networks, Airport will usually connect to the strongest signal). Access depends on the presence or lack of "security". In your Airport panel, you'll see the name of the network(s) available, with a check mark next to the one being accessed. To chose a different network, simply highlight it and click. The check mark moves to that network. For commercial secured access, you'll have to pay a stated fee listed by the site. For unsecured networks (no password), you can technically have access to the Network for surfing the Internet.
Once connected, access to the Internet is a simple as starting up your browser.
One big word of caution - when you access an unsecured wi-fi connection, your machine becomes part of that network, making it potentially noticeable to anyone else on the network. Also, you may be breaking the law. Further, adequately addressing security issues is more on the front-burner now, as most machine's introduced in the past year are "airport" ready. Regardless, I encourage you to be certain you are accessing a Network legally. Also, make sure adequate security measures are in place on the Network to protect your machine's internal data from others.
Back to unsecured networks: While OS X has security provisions to prevent unauthorized access to your system, I suggest you disable any file sharing item found in your System Preference>Sharing panel. Personally, I suggest you stay away from Unsecured Networks. They are an "accident" waiting to happen.

Need to get scores to 640 Mid by the end of the month. HELP/ADVICE appreciated:)

Recently his score plummeted after we opened up two new cards about 2-3 months ago and one showed up on his credit report practically maxed out. I had planned on paying it before the due date but we never got a bill it was reported with the balance before a bill was even circulated but that's a whole other issue. I am trying to recover from that currently he is at : EQU 570 Trans: 583 Exp: 567 we need a 640 to qualify for the down payment assistance program that we are in the process of trying to get. Here's a little background he has 0 collections 1 account with lates but after GW calls and letters they have finally stated they will delete all lates for 2014 but not 2015 which one was a 90 day late in Feb and a 60 Day in Jan. I'm hoping that because they are taking back the original 30 day late that those will be changed to 30 and 60 but we shall see. They said they will report at the end of my statement so 9/1 is the day for that. We recently had a family emergency and maxed out every single card. which is why we are back in the 500's since that's basically are only bad things on his credit (which is nothing compared to what I've got off) I'm hoping getting UTI down will help. ADVICE needed - FCPX projects -- FCP7 workflow (not X27)

I need some sage advice.
I have been working on a huge project for over a year now on location in Bosnia.
All footage has been shot on the 5D mrk3 and c300 cameras.
My FCPX Workflow
While on location I was importing / organizing / syncing / labeling and adding subtitles into FCPX.
- I have each camera in it's own event and project.
- I have the video synced (using Plural Eyes) with the Zoom audio files.
- I have added subtitles from my translator using Annotation edit.
- I have then used the TimeCode generator to give the entire sync'ed, subbed "master timeline" a consistent reference throughout and so I always know exactly where that clip lives in the "master timeline" once I start editing.
- Lastly I have added the "file name" using the Text "right" generator in FCPX so I always know what day it is.
I would then create a separate compound clip for all the video from that day, the external audio, and the subtitles. (so that is 3 Compound clips. (see pics below)
Add the TimeCode and right text generators...
Select all and make it all a C. Clip... I did this so nothing would shift.. the Subs would be in sync and the timecode would always be the same no matter how and where the footage was used....
My Question / Challenge
OK so now my producers have found an editor and this editor needs to edit this project in FCP 7.
I am in Chicago they are in Berlin... I will join them in Berlin but want to do as much prep work in the 1.5 months leading up to my travel date here in Chicago.
They have all the footage and FCPX projects and events and now need to get them into FCP 7
the app X to 7 does not import FCPX generators and has some quirks importing text (I am not sure how it will handle my subs as we are just beginning the import / converting process)
What I don't want is to loose all the good work that I have done on my end to be organized and I absolutely NEED the subtitles included with the sync'd footage.
Does anyone have any advice and / or know where I can turn to figure out what to do in this situation?

Yeah I thought of that too...
Just using the flatened verssion as a reference file that can be enabled and disapbled as necessary hoever like you pointed out that is "not ideal" AND would actually be pretty time consuming as I am dealing with
45 Days of footage totalling 200+ hours...
So it actually takes about an hour to render and export each 3-4 hour days of flattened footage.
But that may be the best soltuion of the not so great options I have in front of me...

Thanks, and yes I will be doing all of that sans the assistant editor.
One of the largest issues is that I am not a FCPX expert so I can't do that...
AND the budget is a bit tight to hire a second editor for this job PLUS it is in Berlin (I am in Chicago)
So while I will be there for the editing process the lead / post time is going to be pretty tight and I need to make sure that all the footage is online, sync'd, subbed and ready to go once I step off the plane.
I agree that in an ideal situation your suggestion would be best if the budget allowed for it...

Advice needed for beginner to Flash website building

I have zero knowledge about using Flash. I am being asked by my boss to build a flash web site for our music and video game stores. I built our old site in Dreamweaver.
Does anyone have advice on where i should start? A suggested book that will walk me through beginning to end. I've worked through a few tutiorials but I feel lost as far at the time line and actions.
Any expert advice is appreciated. I need to get started in the next month. I'd like to build it myself instead of outsourcing to someone else.

Internal hard drive for late 2003 DP G5... advice needed!

I need to get additional storage for a G5 DP 1.8 that I use at work. I'm thinking of getting an internal hard drive rather than an external hard drive, mainly because of pricing - is that the better option? I need a minimum of 200Gb, preferably 300GB.
If I was to buy an external storage device, compatibility isn't much of a problem... however, as an internal hard drive would be purchased through the work account of the PC-based IT department, I want to make sure that I'm getting something that is Mac-friendly.
At present, between the IT guys and myself, we've settled on the Maxtor MaxLine III 300Gb Hard drive- 3.5"/ SATA-150 7 Pin Serial ATA/ 7200 Rpm/ 16 Mb Buffer. Would this work fine in a late 2003 G5 DP 1.8?
Or is there a strong argument for following the external route and purchasing something like the Smartdisk CrossFire 250GB FireWire/USB2 hard drive?

If you want performance, an interal drive ist best.
A PCI(-X) SATA controller with internal or external connectors is just as fast (and should work with any harddrive, unlike the built-in SATA controller). Firewire 400 is somewhat slower, and USB2 is far worse. Firewire 800 is pretty close to SATA.
Anyway, I believe the Maxtor you listed should work fine.
External is great for portability, too keep an out-of-house backup for example.

Exporting Encrypted Photo's - Advice needed

Hi - I just got a new 8900 which was locked down by my corporate BES policy to encrypt the contents of my microSD card. I took several important photo's during a site visit and then discovered that they were all held as .jpg.rem files.
Given I needed to get the photo's off for inclusion in a report, my IT Stazi were persuaded to let me install Blackberry desktop manager and to unlock mass stroage mode. They did so by pushing me a more open policy which not only unlocked the mass storage mode but turned off encryption on the card. I tested this by taking a couple of pic's in my opffice and they are now saved as straight ".jpg's".
Now what I see when I launch Roxio media manager is a pictures folder which still has a lot of .jpg.rem's and a couple of .jpgs. I can preview the site photo's on the Blackberry but cannot get any preview of them in Roxio and cannot get them to copy to my PC using Roxio. The straight JPGs copy over perfectly via Roxio or via Windows Explorer.
I wonder am I a victim of too much success with Roxio thinking it's working in unencrypted mode (from the current policy setting) and so refusing to deal with the .rem files it does find?
I read elsewhere that re-activating encryption on the memory card will only lead the Berry to re-encrypt the entire SD card including re-encrypting the .rem encrypted files and rendering them totally inaccessible. Is this true?
Lastly, anyone know how I can get around this one way or another?. I just cannot afford to lose the pic's since they relate to a European project and visit which I really cannot afford to lose.

Normally, for the "rem" encrypted photos, you must replace the media card in the devcie in which the encryption was enabled, in order to turn off the encryption, and thus remove the "rem" encryption.
So, I don't know this, but I wonder, if you must have the original BES policy back in place to turn off encryption on the photos, first?
Your BES Admin might need to inquire here in the BES section for advice on any settings on their end.

This is a user-to-user forum. You are not addressing Apple employees (consequently, these are not "our" products). When you called whom? What number? And what malfunctioning? Without more information, it is difficult to know what advice to give.

G5 to Mac pro upgrade/transfer/cannibal advice needed

My Mac g5 (2.5 dual) was dead this morning, (PMU or the motherboard ???). Rather than putting more money into it, I purchased a new Mac Pro today. Since I can't start up my old computer at all, I need some upgrade/transfer/cannibalize advice.
1) Can I just put my drives from the G5 into the new drive slots? (I will really need to get to my files ASAP when it gets here)
2) Do you recommend using Migration Assistant or clean installs of all programs? Obviously, MA would be so much faster but I am not sure how dependable it is
3) Can I use the NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (256MB) card from the G5 as an extra? Or just sell it with the G5 for parts?
4) Is there a list somewhere that shows compatible hardware and software? I'm using 10.5 so Snow Leopard is new to me. I'd like to keep from spending money on peripherals.
5) Did I forget anything? Any additional tips would be appreciated

Hardware-wise, peripherals shouldn't be much of an issue unless they require third party drivers that weren't updated.
Your G5 internal parts are limited to hard drives for compatibility.
You do want to be aware of hard drive format differences for Intel Macs and PPC Macs regarding GPT (GUID Partition Table) and Apple Partition Map (APM).
Intel Macs boot to either, but PPC Macs only boot to APM.
Intel Mac software (OS) installer only want to install and update to GPT, so if you want to use existing drives to install OS X SL to, you will need to reformat the drive.

Advice Needed : Blackberry Curve or Iphone

Im having a tough decision, I really need to get a smartphone for my business needs and I am torn between a Blackberry or an iphone. I have a variety of friends that I have asked for advice and it seems to break down like this. All my rich business oriented friends all seem to like the blackberry. All my bohemian, hipster, bandwagon friends like the iphone. I run my own business as a freelance creative professional and keeping in touch is very important to me. I also care about looking cool. What do you guys think?

If you need reliable push email notification (by reliable, I mean consistent notification of new email very soon after it arrives in your mailbox...), and reliable email delivery, I'd suggest the BlackBerry.
The unfortunate fact is that the Yahoo Push email feature isn't dependable today (perhaps not all users are affected, but some clearly are)... Users have also seen issues sending email (myself included)... where the iPhone indicates that the email was sent without error... but it's being dropped silently somewhere, never to arrive.
There are indications that Apple/Yahoo are working on a fix, but it's yet to come. I'm hoping the predicted 1.1.2 release will address these issues, but am not depending on it.
I moved from a BlackBerry Pearl to the iPhone. While I LOVE the ability of the iPhone to render HTML email (something my Pearl couldn't do.. and an HTML email was essentially impossible to read), the inconsistent Push performance has frustrated me no end.
The availability of supported 3rd party apps was also nice on the BlackBerry... but it looks like we could have this addressed with the iPhone SDK coming out early next year. I really miss having a password vault application (Splash Data's SplashID for example) on my handheld.
If Push Email performance isn't a concern, and you have no immediate need for 3rd party apps (or don't mind working around the limitation using an unsupported mechanism), the iPhone's a great choice. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone... but Push email is currently not a strong point in my experience.

Need to get a new MacBook Pro 17" Battery..ideas?

A few days back my MacBook Pro's battery died and I noticed it was swelled up pretty bad.
Needless to say, I desperatley need to get a new battery (MacBook Pro 17 " battery, id A1189), but am a wee bit scared to fork out £100, plus money is a wee bit tight right now.
I'd like to know if anyone here knows of anywhere where I could get a replacemnt battery at a good price? I'm based in London so it would have to be in the UK.
I've googled my brains out and found that Duracell Direct to a replacement at £74.
Any advice or directions to a trusted, decent priced vendor would be great

One thing to try is to make an appointment at the genius bar and ask them about the battery. Take both it and your Mac in. There used to be a program called "Battery Update" that replaced swollen batteries, but it is no longer in effect. However, Apple has frequently been very generous about replacing swollen batteries or selling a replacement at a discount. They should also recycle the battery for you.
Whatever you do, remove the battery immediately and don't use it any more. It could cause permanent damage to your Mac. It may leak, so place it in a plastic bag so it can't damage anything.
It is entirely at Apple's discretion what they might do, but they did give me a free replacement for a 3 year old battery with 265 cycles on it. You have nothing to lose by asking--the worst they can do is say no.
If no joy, you might want to look at OWC's battery listings. I believe they ship to the UK, and they currently have some special deals along with their line of NuPower batteries. I bought a NuPower battery for my iBook, and it has performed very well. I've heard mixed reviews about other third party batteries, and have heard nothing whatsoever about anything by Duracell.

My iPhone 4 was stolen and I need to get its serial number

So my iPhone 4 was stolen and I need to get the serial number off of it to help find it. I looked online and an article (this one to be exact: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4061?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) told me to go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and then select my device and it would tell me the serial number. However, when I got to the devices menu, my iPhone didn't show up, but my dad's did. Any idea on how to get it to show up or an alternate way to get the serial number (I don't have the box or the phone)?

Yours was stolen, it will not show up in iTunes. There is no way to get your serial number unless you registered it with Apple: Your Support Profile for Registered Purchases.

K9A2 plat hardware, CPU monitoring-advice needed please

Hi,
It seems that the MSI's "dualcore center" does not accurately displays CPU temp, normally it shows CPU temp. at lower than room temp.
Also sometimes dual-core-center freeze/hangup other programs as well.
With that being said, I am looking for advice/recommendation as to what program to use to monitor CPU temps; something that would show in the task bar, show current temp., and does not hog up lot of resources.

Furthermore ironic the fact is that I claim that I am not obsessed, yet I keep coming back here too read /learn more. May be it is not an obsession but an addiction. I am just a newbie here, some of you have post count above 1K. Hee-heeee..
Fredric, you mention bios is the most accurate, but you can't access it during a game play or application use.
The only time I see bios info is when I boot. (yes boot no need to correct.... boot= as in pressing the power "ON" button to begin PC operation) it would not be a good monitoring tool.

There is room , I am just not satisfied the way it is mounted. A huge, heavy heatsink hanging out to the side which is supported by the MOBO, now you hang another object(fan) on the heatsink; just like hanging weight on the end of a lever. Then you spin up the fan and let it vibrate, these cheap fans not balanced as they should be. An air tunnel or duct system would be a much better way to bring airflow to a heat sink, better than hanging a fan on it.
Normal way of mounting works of course. I am just testing to see if there is a better way. I am using a fan, just mounting it elsewhere.
Products engineered certain way because size, cost, or compatibility issues. Not necessarily to be most efficient.
My corsair TX750 PSU a good example. A fan is mounted inside; size and compability issue.
So the engineers put a 140 mm fan on the bottom(inside), blocked half of its airflow with a plastic shield so air is moved to the back, though and out.
I removed the fan and the airflow blocking plastic piece, mounted fan on outside of PSU. Airflow has nearly doubled. I am sure it runs cooler too. A slight mod to the case was necessary. Now I sleep better at night (kiddding)
This PSU (unmodified) in an Antec P182 case barely moved any air through it. I ended up selling the the antec 182.
