Advice needed on replacing ibook G3 with MacBook

We want to give our daughter a MacBook for graduation. She has used an iBook G3 700 MHZ 640 RAM for 4 years.
Should we buy NOW or wait until August when she heads to college? What is coming down the pike that would be worth waiting for?
Recommendations on which model, and how much RAM vs. MHz?
many thanks-
Jennifer

Hi, Jennifer, and welcome to the Discussions.
No one here will know what Apple might release between now and August and speculation is discouraged in the Discussions. So I'm afraid we can't provide much insight. Unless she needs a system now, though, there would be no harm, and possibly some benefit, to waiting. If nothing else, if you wait until she's officially registered at her college, you can purchase at Apple's higher education pricing. The college may even have a computer reseller on campus. This may save you some money, though of course you should shop around; sometimes, particularly with low-cost computers, a dealer will bundle items with the system (RAM, printers, etc.) which lowers the effective cost. Apple also often has "back to school" incentives toward the second half of the summer - free or rebated printers are common offers. So again, unless she really needs a new system now, I'd suggest you wait until late summer or fall.
As to model, without knowing more about her needs - what she'll be studying, her interests, etc. - it's difficult to offer specific advice. But some general pointers:
- if it's a tradeoff of a component you can replace/upgrade vs one you can't, opt for the component that can't be upgraded/replaced in your initial purchase. For example, it's easy and inexpensive to add RAM later. It's impossible to upgrade the CPU to one with a higher clock speed.
- If budget allows, go for more RAM. I'd recommend at least 1GB. Going with Apple's RAM will cost more, but will reduce headaches should something go wrong (if it does and there is third-party RAM installed, Apple will usually ask that it be removed and the factory RAM replaced before proceeding).
- absolutely get AppleCare; the cost of most laptop compents out of warranty is pretty steep.
- get coverage to protect the laptop in case of accidental damage or theft (AppleCare does not cover either one). Such insurance usually isn't very expensive, particularly if you can get it as a rider to your homeowner's insurance.
Hope this helps.

  • Advice needed for replacement battery for G3 12" Dual USB ibook

I need to buy a new battery for my 12" iBook, a 600 MHz G3 model, dual USB, vintage 2001. The online Apple store has something called an Extra Battery - iBook 12.1", which is a 50-watt-hour battery. However, when I phoned the Apple store to order one the salesperson insisted that these would only work in the newer G4 version of the iBook. I queried this because there is no mention of a restriction on the processor in the description in the online catalogue, only that the machine should have two USB ports. He suggested I call the Applecare technical helpline, which I did, but the engineer there wasn't sure if the battery would be compatible either, which I find surprising since they must service and repair these machines all the time. He said it might work but there was no guarantee and the increased capacity of the newer G4 battery might damage my power adaptor, which I also find surprising. He said my machine was now too old to get a new battery. I have also looked at ifixit.com in my search for answers, which seems to suggest that the 12" iBook G3 and G4 batteries are interchangeable provided you don't mind having the wrong colour rubber foot on that corner of the laptop.
If there is anyone from Apple who monitors these posts I would be grateful if you could give me the definitive answer about the compatibility of the iBook Extra Battery available from the Apple online store before I order one, as it would be a rather expensive mistake to make if won't work or if there is a risk it would damage my machine.
    Many thanks
    Peter

The iBook G4's battery is absolutely fine in the iBook G3 (Dual USB). In addition to the rubber foot being a different color, the battery casing is a bit different finish, too, but it will work absolutely fine.

  • Advice needed regarding replacing the HD

    Hi
I have bought a 160GB drive for my last generation Powerbook. When trying to remove the old drive the two outermost screws holding the actual HD in will not budge at all. I have removed all the other screws, and I'm not new to this, having happily replaced HDs in Titanium Powerbooks and recently in a MacBook Pro. But these two screws are completely stuck. I have the correct size screwdrivers and have actually already damaged the heads of two screwdrivers trying to get the screws loose, but have not damaged the screws at all. Do I have to admit defeat and hand it over to a workshop? And in that case can they do a better job than I can or will they just round the screws off?
Does anyone have any experience of such a problem?
    Thanks
    Matthew Whiting

You have gotten some excellent advice, and it will probably serve to get your screws out. But I wanted to add my 2¢ for some remedies of last resort just in case you need them. This does not come from any knowledge of powerbooks, just of getting out stuck screws.
If you can safely apply a little heat to the screw head without harming anything else, this could help. You could use a low power soldering iron and you don't want to heat it up more than about 200º. This can do several things. If there is Loctite on the screw, it will soften it. It will also help the WD-40 to penetrate. And because of the difference in the coefficient of expansion between steel and aluminum, it will make the screw very slightly looser in the hole.
And if all else fails and you do have to drill something out, you should be aware that there are such things as left-handed drill bits. You can get a set of 5 from Snap-on, the smallest of which is 1/8". You will also need a reversible drill motor. The thing about drilling out a screw with a left-handed drill bit is that it will sometimes bite into what's left of the screw head well enough to break it loose and back it out, since it is turning in the proper direction to do this. A regular right-handed drill bit rotates in a direction to tighten, not to loosen.
Hopefully you won't need any of this information, especially if you have already applied the tiny bit of oil to be soaking into the threads for a few days while you attend to your baby daughter. But wanted you to have it just in case.
    Good luck!

  • Using external harddrive from iBook G4 with MacBook Pro

My logicboard failed in my iBook G4, so I installed the harddrive into an external exclosure, (MacAlly PHR250CC FireWire/USB 2.0 External Enclosure for 2.5" HDD).
My new MacBook Pro refuses to recognize the harddrive when I plug it in. It works on an older iBook G3. I've tried restarting it with it plugged in, and it still doesn't recognize it.
Is there any kind of plug-in or driver I need to install to make them compatible?

    1. Is the drive recognized in your System profiler?
    2. Is the drive formatted GUID? (check in your Disk Utility)
    3. Plug it in another Mac and see if it will work.

  • Advice needed: Best Application to Sync with iPhone

I've been using Palm products for the last 10 years and plan to finally leave the sinking ship and going to an iPhone.
As some of you know, Palm has a wonderful desktop application that allows me to sync with my handheld easily and quickly.
Question: What do you think is the best tool to sync with my new iPhone to my desktop WITHOUT having to buy MobileMe? For reference, I have a MacBook running on 10.4.11.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.
    Tracey

iTunes will sync most of what what you need: http://www.apple.com/iphone/how-to/#get-started.syncing-with-itunes
For anything else, get Air Sharing Pro: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=312686749&mt=8

  • I need to replace 5.0 with 3.6 so that I can take a class - it doesn't seem to have worked.,

I went thru the link that I saw somewhere in your doc to replace 3.6 - but it still says 5.0.1. Do I need to delete 5.0 first? If so, how?

Install Portable Firefox 3.6.x to your hard drive to use at that website, and continue using Firefox 5 elsewhere. <br />
    http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/localization#legacy36
While going back to an older version of Firefox usually works fine, depending upon the add-ons you may have installed, you could end up with compatibility issues with add-ons after reverting to an older version.
Portable Firefox installs completely separate from the regular Firefox installation, and won't affect your current Firefox version.

  • HT201412 my iPhone 4s doesn't charge.  tried multiple cables.  went to Apple (had genius appointment) store thinking that I may need battery replaced.  Met with an abrupt assistance.  She looked at receptacle where cable plugs in, declared it corroded

My iPhone 4S doesn't charge.  I tried multiple connectors.  I'm thinking my battery needs replacing.  I had an appt today at the Genius bar.  The Apple associate was a bit abrupt.  She looked at the receptacle where the connector goes.  Declared it corroded and offered to sell me a new phone.  I said it doesn't look that bad and I believe it may be the battery and asked if there is way to test if it was my battery.  She said "no", according to what I'm seeing the receptacle is damaged due to the corrosion I'm seeing.
I didn't have the time nor the patience to deal with her and left in disgust
I'm thinking about going to another Apple store to have it checked out.
    Any thoughts on this matter?

You can go anywhere you want.  The notes about your previous visit and diagnosis will remain in Apple's records.  Notes are attached to the serial number on the iPhone that was inspected.

  • (need help) Replacing AVI files with MOV files in a edit.

I'm working on a large edit that uses low res AVI files for editing,
Though all the high res files are written as MOV's with exactly the same name (just being a different filetype)
Is there a way to automaticly re-link all those avi movies with those high res MOV files?
The edit is quite big, so it would save me a very tedious job

Close Premiere.  Change the name of the folder the current AVI files are in.  Reopen Premiere.  When it asks you where the files are, point it to the new ones.
The only stumbling block may be the different extension.  I'm not sure if Premiere will pass that by or trip over it.

  • Any advice about running a 24" monitor with Macbook Pro?

In a far city, 3,000 miles from my tower and Apple Cinema screens. I have to edit a film from a little MacBook Pro laptop (2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo, max 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM).
I borrowed a 24" Acer, plugged it in. Seems to look okay for editing. But panning and any movement is generating mild breakup, like a thin slash through the image. I'm wondering if there is some way I can set up the laptop to more efficiently drive the external monitor?
So far all I've done is plugged it in, and set it up as the playback screen for Final Cut Pro.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated...
    Ben

According to the Apple spec sheet, your external monitor port should support up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a MacBook Pro 2,2, which I think you have. You could try setting the external to smaller res numbers and see if that helps.
My 22" LCD monitor has a maximum res of 1680x1050 and I suspect the native res on your 24" external is less than the 2560x1600 that the MBP is supposed to support.
Are you in spanning mode or mirrored mode? Might try both and see if one works better.

  • Ibook wifi with usb modem with adsl router

how could you connect the ibook so that it's wireless to the phone line. I'm gonna have to buy all the parts but what's the easiest way to do this ?

To give the iBook G4 wireless the ability to connect to a wireless network, you simply need to install an AirPort Extreme card. The last iBook G4s had wireless built-in.
If you have a ADSL modem without an Ethernet output you will need to replace that modem with a modem that does have an Ethernet output. Then you can buy any inexpensive 802.11b/g compliant wireless router to provide a wireless network for your iBook.

  • How to replace the '&' character with '&' in xi

    Hi,
    i need to replace the '&' character with ' &amp;'.but i f i am converting it is displaying as '&' because internally '&amp;' = '&'.
beacuse of this it is not converting.
is there any possiblity to change the  standard conversion in xi.

Graphical mapping does not support special character like & , <,> to be mapped.
You can encode & as and in UTF-8 only.
if you want the special character to be used, Opt XSLT mapping with ISO-8859-1 encoding
