Advice needed, remotely controlling Mac's.

Hi there,
In my household we have several Mac's, all in different parts of the same house, performing different jobs. The Mac mini in the ground floor living room stores our music and pictures. Whilst the MacPro in the loft studio is used for work and only contains work related media.
If I want to play music on the MacPro I simply use iTunes to gain access to the music library on the Mac mini. This only works however if iTunes is running on the remote Mac. So here's my question. How do I remotely control Macs in my house, all of which are on the same network? Remote Desktop seems like overkill for what I need.
Something akin to the remote screen sharing feature in iChat is what I am looking for, that way I can launch iTunes remotely. Any ideas or recommendations? Many thanks in advance.
Regards, Anil K Solanki

I've been using Mac's for nearly 20 years now & I'm still amazed by the amount of new things I learn.
Captfred's solution is exactly what I was looking for. So thanks, to him/her and to all the generous and kind folks that have contributed.
I must say this simply because it is true. This forum always has knowledgeable and polite people willing to help fellow Mac users. For those good folks who make this forum an actual joy to visit, my thanks and respect.

  • Remotely control mac to another mac over internet / ML 10.8.2

Help please!! I am in Hong Kong and want to be able to remotely control my fathers mac that is in the UK. I want to be able to take FULL control of his mac from mine. Both using Mountain lion. Can this done? What are the EXACT steps required to make this happen for both macs please?

The easiest way is of both of you are using Messages. If so you can share the screen of your fathers Mac and you will have access to the computer as if you ere logged in to it.
If you look in Messages->Video make sure Screen Sharing Enabled is checked on both computers. Then once you have a chat session going with your father select Messages->Ask to Share <fathers message name> Screen… and you father will select Messages->Share My Screen with <your message name>
You can look in the Messages help file for complete description of this.

  • A way of remotely controlling Mac Retina

The more I use my expensive Mac Retina, the more I regret my purchase.
The latest restriction is not having any option to remotely control my MAC. So standing up and doing a presentation on a state of the art machine, i am forced to walk to my laptop and press buttons.
How can MAC fail so badly.
So my constructive question is to anyone out there who knows of a work around? I know there are Apps in the store, but they don't really do the job very well and if I am out and about without wireless presenting I cant use them.
Is there no bluetooth remote we can use?
    HELP!

There are a number of remote desktop applications for iPhone or iPad if you have one of those. Go to the iTunes store > App store > search for Remote Desktop.
    Best of luck.

  • DDTS-100 Need Remote Control

Hi, I somehow lost the remote control hand unit for my DDTS-100. Can I order a new one? The unit is buried deep inside a low-to-the-ground cabinet, and I can't reach the buttons.
    Thanks

If you leave the speakers idle, they will consume very little power. The only way to figure out how much would be to use a multimeter or an "amp clamp" to figure out how much current the speakers draw.
If the speakers consumed much power when idle, they'd be making noise when you aren't doing anything to them.

  • Advice needed: Moving from mac to pc - pc specs.

    Hi all,
This is my first post. I have been using FCP on a mac for a few years now but its time for me to upgrade. I want to upgrade to 64bit, and also move away from FCP. I am considering the following Hp Pavilion pc.  I've always used mac but can't afford a new one, and feel a little out of my depth when it comes to pcs. Any advice/reccomendations would be appreciated. The specs for the Hp Pavilion are below.

Hi, Thank you for your response.
I am actually based in the UK (might be on the wrong forum?) - but I had a look at a custom built site here.
The following are specs that I can afford. I could go a little higher too. Do you think these are suitable? If not what should I change?
Thank you very much in advance. (The case is InWin Centinal Buc Black Gaming Case.)

  • Apple TV remote controls Mac

When I use my Apple TV remote, it activates programs on my mac. How do I stop this?

I had that problem with my old imac.  Unfortunately, I never could figure out how to stop it but when I got a new imac last year, it didn't have that problem.

  • Video intensive work on Mac Pro? Advice Needed

    Hi everyone,
I've been originally saving up for a while now for an iMac 24" as it offers the best specification price wise. But now I leaning on the Mac Pro and therefore need some advice.
I know that there are alot of posts on advice - need to buy mac etc. so therfore I would really appreciate if I am afforded some help.
I am mostly going to do ALOT of video encoding (via handbrake) and I am looking for the best configuration available to achieve lowest waiting time.

I think you should go back and look at the other threads with advice, your budget. There is "ideal" and "affordable."
Will it pay for itself in 24 months so you can afford the next revision at that time?
    Start with an 8-Core 3GHz.
Add a Port Multiplier controller and two drive cases, 5 drives each, nearly 400MB/sec RAID.
    Throw in 8GB RAM.
Add in costs for software upgrades, two sets of backups, four internal 500GB drives.
Seagate has 750GB, as does WD. Hitachi has their $450 1000GB monster.
Give yourself time to build, test, and optimize your setup, and expect to change it over time as you learn more.
Can't afford that? then trim the 8-core. But Apple has shown how efficient next generation applications already are for video when it comes to 3GHz 8-core Mac Pro.

  • Remote control of Mac via Flash iOS app

    Hi all
I am a very trial-and-error Flash coder but have managed to create a (I think) pretty serviceable VJ system - see http://www.smashedupsoiree.com/magic-wall/
There are two Flash movies that run concurrently on the same Mac. One is the video content itself which is displayed by a projector; the other is the Controller movie which runs on the mac laptop screen. The two movies communicate by LocalConnection. I have had some success using VNC apps on an ipad which grabs the screen from the Mac and therefore enables this Controller movie to be effectively operated as a touch screen, portable interface. However there are latency issues with VNC - not what you need for a live performance tool!
I am considering instead developing the controller as a packaged-for-ios app to reduce the latency issues. If I do so, does anyone know how it will be able to control the flash movie running on the mac on the same network? (In the vein of these kinds of apps: http://mashable.com/2010/02/28/iphone-remote-control-apps/ )? I have read that Local Connections do not work in Packaged-for-iOS apps. Would I instead use Apple APIs? How is this done via Flash Actionscript? I would want to either control the Mac-based movie like a LocalConnection or even simulating keypresses would be fine, that I can then detect with the Mac Flash movie.
As I mentioned before, I'm no professional coder so the whole matter is a bit blurry to me! Any pointers would be much appreciated...

  • Remotely Controlling A Mac From A PC

How can someone remotely control a Mac from a PC?
What would need to be set to allow a PC access?

If you have enabled remote access (ssh) and you have configure your router to allow incoming ssh connections to your mac then you could access your mac via a terminal something like Putty on your pc and turn on screen sharing via the terminal.
10.5: Start screen sharing remotely in Terminal
You could install vine server on your mac, and again that could be lauched via an ssh connection.

  • DVD remote controls work differently on a Mac?

I created an SD DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4, and when I tested it on a standard TV DVD player, the remote controls work just as they should. But, when I play it on a Mac computer using a remote, it doesn't work the same. For example, if I have a video track following a slideshow, when I'm on the last slide I can press PLAY and the video will play. But on a Mac, pressing PLAY is taking me back to the Menu page.
Can someone please help me figure out if there's a way I can fix this? Thank you!

Have you tried looking around the DVD Studio support area?

  • HT1941 how do i remote control my mac mini from my macbook air

I want to control my iTunes library from my mac air.  How do I setup the remote control to accomplish this?

    1. Use the Remote App on iDevices. There are third-party apps also available.
    2. Use Screen Sharing on the MBAir.
    3. More elaborate solutions using the IR Remote and IR Blasters are also possible.
    4. AirParrot and Beamer may also provide some capabilities.
    5. AirPlay requires ATV and a Mac.
